Wells probably yield less than 5 gallons per minute. Ground water is a sodium or mixed cation carbonate/bicarbonate type with dissolved-solids concentrations ranging from about 300 to 700 milligrams per liter. No relationship between water chemistry and well depth or location is apparent. Brazil Creek flows 1 cubic foot per second or less about 25 percent of the time and has no flow about 15 percent of the time. Water in Brazil Creek is a mixed cation carbonate/bicarbonate type. Dissolved-solids concentrations upstream from old and recent mines ranged from 30 to 100 milligrams per liter whereas concentrations downstreams from the mines ranged from 50 to 600 milligrams per liter. Excessive levels of cadmium, chromium, lead, and mercury at times preclude use of water from Brazil and Rock Creeks for public supply. Maximum suspended-sediment discharge, in tons per day, was 2,500 for Brazil Creek and 3,300 for Rock Creek. Silt-clay particles with diameters less than 0.062 millimeter were the dominant sediment size. For several years, water use in the area has increased and during 1983 about 0.57 mil gal/day were obtained from groundwater sources. Virtually all groundwater in the area is used for public supplies. The principal aquifers currently used in the area are in the Sparta Sand and Cockfield Formations. The Sparta Sand is the most intensively developed and generally the highest yielding aquifer in the study area. Water level declines have averaged 2 to 3 ft/yr since 1940. The principal source of groundwater recharge to the aquifers is precipitation on outcrops of permeable strata northeast of the area. The base of freshwater is at the base of the Meridian-upper Wilcox aquifer except in the extreme northeast part of the area where the lower Wilcox aquifer contains freshwater. Water from the aquifers is suitable for public supply use without treatment except in a few places where iron concentrations are high, at from 0.10 to 9.3 mg/L. Excessive color is also a problem in the water from some wells in the area. Color was 20 units or greater in 8 of 25 wells sampled. Gonfiantini summarizing the findings and recommendations of the 1983 Advisory Group Meeting on Stable Isotope Reference Samples for Geochemical and Hydrologic Investigations held in Vienna does not accurately represent the consultants ' consensus on three important points. The consultants (1) recommended no value for the C02-H20 oxygen isotope fractionation factor, not the cited value of 1.04115, (2) adopted a value of 1.0309 rather than 1.03086 to relate the PDB and SMOW scales, and (3) adopted a firm 180 value of -2.20% for NBS-19 on the PDB scale rather than agreeing that this would be a tentative value subject to modification when more measurements in selected laboratories are available. The Mullica River basin covers 570 sq mi and is drained by numerous shallow streams. The water-table aquifer consists of sand and gravel intermixed with clay and silt. The computer model is based on a finite-difference method with stream-seepage equations coupled to the groundwater equation. The model was applied to the approximately steady-state conditions of March 1979. Initial estimates of streambed hydraulic conductance and aquifer hydraulic conductivity were adjusted until model water level matched measured water level within 5 ft for 41 of 42 wells. Also, model streamflow was within 20 percent of measured streamflow at 12 of 15 sites. The 5,000-ft grid spacing should be adequate for a future predictive model. The natural flow system is adequately simulated by a two-dimensional model. Accordingly, ground-water withdrawals from this valley would not appreciably decrease streamflow in the Chenango River by induced infiltration and could be used for specialized needs. The aquifers in the valley are capable of sustaining a long-term total withdrawal of about 12.7 million gallons per day during prolonged drought conditions. Larger withdrawals could be made on a short-term basis or during periods of normal or above-normal precipitation. Saturated thickness of undifferentiated stratified-drift deposits in the valley ranges from 20 feet in the northwestern part of the valley to more than 300 feet at its southern end. Direct areal recharge accounts for about 56 percent of the total recharge to the valley aquifer infiltration from streams accounts for 24 percent, and runoff from the adjacent till-mantled hillsides accounts for 20 percent. The water-table and confined aquifers within the valley hold at least 19.6 billion gallons of usable ground water in storage. These relations show that suspended-sediment concentrations vary in direct proportion to streamflow. The number of coincident instantaneous suspended-sediment concentration and water-discharge values available for each regression analysis ranged from 6 to 98. Standard error of estimates for 35 relationships were usually large and correlation were relatively small. Large standard errors and small correlations are expected because of the complexity of the fluvial system. The effects of other factors, such as geology, topography, climate, soils, vegetation, and land use were not evaluated. Daily suspended-sediment discharges for four stations were computed by the ' sediment-transport-curve ' method described in this report , and compared with values computed by the traditional ' temporal-concentration-graph ' method. Annual sediment yields in tons per square mile drainage area, were compared in like manner. For those stations examined, values computed by the ' sediment-transport-curve ' method were within 58 percent of those computed by the temporal-concentration-graph ' method when only one year of record was used, but were within 12 to 21 percent when 2 to 4 years of record were averaged. The measurements were made in mid-winter when pumping was minimal and water levels had recovered, for the most part, from the effects of pumping during the previous irrigation season. Annual hydrologic data are provided for relating water-level changes from a ' base-reference year ' (predevelopment year), a year of abnormally high rainfall and minimum pumpage (1966 or 1974), and each of 7 consecutive years of measurement (1978-84). The ' base-reference year ' is designated as 1940 for the southwestern area, 1944 for the south-central area, and 1950 for the northwestern and west-central areas. Water levels for the ' base-reference year ' are established by measurements made during that year and by interpretation of maps showing water-level altitudes. Data also are provided for relating the average annual water-level changes, saturated thicknesses of the deposits, and percentage changes in saturated thicknesses.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr84613","usgsCitation":"Pabst, M., and Dague, B., 1984, January 1984 water levels, and data related to water-level changes, western and south-central Kansas: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 84-613, iv, 163 p. :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr84613.","productDescription":"iv, 163 p. :ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":154700,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0613/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":49901,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0613/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa7e4b07f02db666fb2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pabst, M.E.","contributorId":17608,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pabst","given":"M.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":182529,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Dague, B.J.","contributorId":45723,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dague","given":"B.J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":182530,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The data were assembled into computer-readable format and sorted into 15 major aquifer groups based on principal lithology, physiographic province, and age. Nineteen variables in each group were summarized by the Statistical Analysis Systems UNIVARIATE procedures to produce descriptive statistics including extreme values and quartiles. \r\n\r\n The bulk of the water-quality data are in the important aquifers in the unconsolidated Coastal Plain sediments, the Triassic sedimentary rocks, the igneous and metamorphic rocks, and the carbonate rocks. On the other hand, water-quality data for aquifer groups in the Appalachian Plateau and Valley and Ridge Province are sparse. Statewide, only six wells provide sufficient long-term data for trend analyses. \r\n\r\n Ground-water quality in Pennsylvania is highly diverse. High concentrations of dissolved solids, iron, manganese, sulfate, and nitrate are prevalent forms of natural and manmade contamination. The unconsolidated Coastal Plain aquifers have been most severely degraded. On the other hand, some of the best quality water is found in the quartzite, sandstone, and conglomerate rock units in the Cambrian and Precambrian rocks.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr84706","usgsCitation":"Barker, J.L., 1984, Compilation of ground water quality data in Pennsylvania: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 84-706, viii, 144 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr84706.","productDescription":"viii, 144 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":35307,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0706/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":140399,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0706/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1de4b07f02db6a9885","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Barker, J. Thin sections of selected sediment material were made for petrographic examination. Preliminary interpretations indicate that (1) it may be possible to distinguish the various sediment interbeds on the basis of their mineralogy, (2) the presence of carbonate horizons in sedimentary interbeds may be utilized to approximate the time of exposure and the climate while the surface was exposed (which affected the hydrogeologic character of the sediment), and the type and orientation of fracture-filling material may be utilized to determine the mechanism by which fractures were filled.
