Records are presented for 148 stations with at least 10 years of unregulated or regulated streamflow. Streamflow at 70 of the stations is regulated for certain perdiods. Data for these periods were analyzed separately to account for changes in streamflow due to regulating structures.\r\nFor each gaging station, a brief description of the location, drainage area and period of record is given. For those stations with a regulated streamflow record, a brief regulation history is given also. This information is followed by tables of monthly and annual discharge statistics, low- and high-flow frequency statistics, peak-flow frequency statistics, and flow-duration statistics. The study reach is a complex hydrologic system wherein a substantially variable streamflow interacts with an alluvial aquifer. The study approach included: (1) calibration and verification of a streamflow-routing model that contained a bank-storage-discharge component; (2) use of the model to develop the methods by which transit losses could be calculated; and (3) design of an application method for calculating daily transit loss using the model results. Sources of transit losses that were studied are bank storage, channel storage, and evaporation. Magnitude of bank-storage loss primarily depends on duration of a recovery period during which water lost to bank storage is returned to the stream. Net loss to bank storage can vary from about 50% for a 0-day recovery period to about 2% for a 180-day recovery period. Virtually all water lost to bank storage could be returned to the stream with longer recovery periods. Channel-storage loss was determined to be about 10% of a release quantity. Because the loss on any given day is totally recovered in the form of gains from channel storage on the subsequent day, channel storage is a temporary transit loss. Evaporation loss generally is less than 5% of a given daily transmountain return-flow release, depending on month of year. Evaporation losses are permanently lost from the system. In the foothills of Colorado, annual floodflows are derived from snowmelt at high elevations in the mountain regions, from rainfall at low elevation in the plains or plateau regions, or from a combination of rain falling on snow or mixed population hydrology. Above approximately 7,500 ft, snowmelt dominates; rain does not contribute to the flood potential. Regional flood-frequency relations were developed and compared with conventional flood-estimating technique results, including an evaluation of the magnitude and frequency of the probable maximum flood. Evaluation of streamflow data and paleoflood investigations provide an alternative for evaluating flood hydrology and the safety of dams. The study indicates the need for additional data collection and research to understand the complexities of the flood hydrology in mountainous regions, especially its effects on flood-plain management and the design of structures in the flood plain. These disposal methods have the potential to contaminate groundwater beneath the sites, the soil on the sites, and nearby surface water bodies. Various activities on the nine sites included production of diborane, transformer oil waste, production of soda ash, use of solvents for the manufacture of farm implements, reclamation of solvents and paints, oil-refinery wastes, meat packaging, and the manufacture and cleaning of tanker-truck tanks. Monitoring wells were installed upgradient and downgradient from the potential contamination source on each site. Strict decontamination procedures were followed to prevent cross contamination between well installations. Air-quality surveys were made on each site before other investigative procedures started. Hydrogeologic investigative techniques, such as terrain geophysical surveys, gamma-ray logs, and laboratory permeameter tests, were used. Groundwater level measurements provide data to determine the direction of flow. Groundwater contamination detected under the sites posed the greatest threat to the environment because of possible migration of contaminants by groundwater flow. Concentrations of volatile organic compounds, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, and trace metals were detected in the groundwater at several of the sites. Many of the same compounds detected in the groundwater also were detected in soil and bed-material samples collected onsite or adjacent to the sites. Several contaminants were detected in background samples of groundwater and soil. The purpose of this report is to present the results of a compilation of available low flow data in the form of tables and ' 7Q10 flow profiles ' (minimum average flow for 7 consecutive days with a 10-yr recurrence interval)(7Q10 flow plotted against distance along a stream channel) for all streams reaches of the Upper Oconee River and tributaries in Georgia where sufficient data of acceptable accuracy are available. Drainage area profiles are included for all stream basins larger than 5 sq mi, except for those in a few remote areas. This report is the second in a series of reports that will cover all stream basins north of the Fall Line in Georgia. It includes the Oconee River basin down to and including Camp Creek at stream mile 134.53, Town Creek in Baldwin and Hancock Counties down to County Road 213-141, and Buffalo Creek in Hancock County down to the Hancock-Washington County line. Flow records were not adjusted for diversions or other factors that cause measured flows to represent other than natural flow conditions. The 7-day minimum flow profile was omitted for stream reaches where natural flow was known to be altered significantly. The purpose of this study was: (1) to demonstrate the capabilites of the two models for use in designing storm drains, estimating the frequency of storm runoff loads, and evaluating the effectiveness of street sweeping on an urban drainage catchment; and (2) to determine the simulation accuracies of these models. Simulation errors of the two models were summarized as the median absolute deviation in percent (mad) between measured and simulated values. Calibration and verification mad errors for runoff volumes and peak discharges ranged from 14 to 20%. The estimated annual storm-runoff loads, in pounds/acre of effective impervious area, that could occur once every hundred years at the commercial catchment was 95 for dissolved solids, 1.6 for the dissolved nitrite plus nitrate, 0.31 for total recoverable lead, and 120 for suspended sediment. Discharges simulated in the AICW for 1982-86 using BRANCH one-dimensional flow model were used to establish a relation of 7-day average flows in the AICW to summed 7-day average flows of four tributary streams. This relation was used with the tributary records for 1954-86 climatic years to generate 7-day minimum flows of the AICW, which were then used to develop a low-flow frequency relation. The relation indicated that the 7-day, 10-year flow of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway is 192 ct ft/s. A relation of the mile position of the saltwater-freshwater interface to recorded specific conductances at Vereen 's Marina was established. The 1982-85 period of record of specific conductance was used to simulate interface positions which were then used to establish a relation of 7-day average interface position to 7-day average discharge of the AICW. This relation indicated that the 7-day average interface position would be at mile 355.5 for the 7Q10 and at mile 356.2 if 45 cu ft were withdrawn during the 7Q10. The analysis indicates that the AICW can provide a reliable supply of freshwater at the proposed withdrawal location at mi 363.3 in the vicinity of Myrtle Beach, even during the 7Q10 low-flow conditions. Wastes deposited during 50 years of plant operations (1906-1956) have extended the shore line 100 ft and left the park soil contaminated with a number of hazardous material. Soil contaminants include polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls, pesticides, volatile organic compounds, cyanide, and metals. PAHs and metals have been detected in Lake Union sediments. Maximum total PAH concentrations exceeded 100 million micrograms/kilogram in some places in the soils of the park at 6-inch depths and in some lake sediments. Other contaminants present are much lower in concentrations. The park is on glacial drift overlain by gasification waste materials and clean fill. Waste materials include sand and gravels, mixed with lampblack, oil, bricks, and other industrial wastes. Groundwater flows through the soils and waste toward Lake Union. Vertical groundwater movement is uncertain, but is assumed to be upward near Lake Union. Concentrations of most soil contaminants are probably low in the groundwater and in Lake Union due to the low solubilities and high sorptive characteristics of these contaminants. However, no water quality data are available to confirm this premise. Discharge ratings were determined for free weir, free orifice, and submerged orifice flow regimes. Hydraulic conditions that identify flow regimes at McHenry Dam are defined by ratios between headwater depth (h1), tailwater depth (h3), and gate opening (hg). Flow under the sluice gates is identified as weir flow when the ratio of gate opening to headwater depth is greater than 0.73, and as orifice flow when hg/H1 is less than 0.73. Free orifice flow occurs when the ratio of tailwater depth to gate opening is less than 1.3, and submerged orifice flow occurs when h3/hg is greater than 1.3. Flow under the sluice gates is identified as free weir flow when the ratio of tailwater depth to headwater depth is less than 0.75, and as submerged weir flow when h3/h1 is greater than 0.75. Flow over the spillway is identified as free weir flow when the ratio of tailwater depth to headwater depth is less than 0.60, and as submerged weir flow when h3/h1 is greater than 0.60. Discharge coefficients to be used in equations to compute discharge for various hydraulic conditions were determined. Four discharge measurement, ranging from 169 to 2990 cu ft/sec, were used to define discharge coefficients that varies from 2.61 to 3.14 for free weir flow over the spillway. Nineteen discharge measurements, ranging from 180 to 4050 cu ft/sec, were used to define discharge coefficients for free weir, free orifice, and submerged orifice flow under the sluice gates. The average value of the discharge coefficient for free weir flow under the sluice gates is 3.17. Discharge coefficients for free orifice flow varied from 0.48 to 0.66 and the discharge coefficients for submerged orifice flow from the two measurements were 0.59 and 0.67.
