Rainfall in excess of 20 inches was recorded near Clyde. Drainage modifications in this Coastal Plain basin, consisting primarily of channel excavation and clearing of channel blockages, were completed in December 1981. The hydrologic condition of the basin before and during modification was determined from observed data.\r\n\r\nObserved data indicate hydrologic changes occurred in selected basin characteristics. For example, water levels in the surficial aquifer within 250 feet of Juniper Branch declined as much as 0.4 feet during modifications; at distances greater than 250 feet from the stream, ground-water levels did not change. Base flows increased, and suspended-sediment concentrations for high flows were several times greater than before channel modifications. Increases in selected chemical constituent concentrations in stream water during modifications were as follows: calcium, 12 percent; sodium, 18 percent; bicarbonate, 84 percent; and phosphorous, 80 percent. The geologic feature is commonly known in the literature as the Cap au Ores Fault or Cap au Ores Uplift. A second objective was to demonstrate that the marine seismic system could be used successfully for making relatively deep penetration seismic-reflection surveys on inland waterways with shallow water depths (less than 10 meters) and organic sediments on the waterway bottom.</p><p>The survey was made by agreement between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE), St. Louis District, and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The USGS used a specially equipped, trailerable, 38-ft aluminum boat for the work. The quality of the survey records can be classified as from fair to good. Seismic-reflection events could be interpreted in the upper 200 ms of data. Five reflecting horizons with little slope were recorded between Mississippi River Miles 195 and 210 without any evidence of faulting of the magnitude (50 to 100 m) suggested by the Shannon and Wilson report (1980). Minor faulting and buried channeling could be interpreted.</p><p>This survey demonstrated the value and economy of obtaining deeper penetration seismic data on inland water using an offshore marine, CDP, digital, multichannel seismic-reflection system. On-going modifications in field procedure, equipment configuration, equipment, and data processing will further improve the results obtained with such equipment. Artificial dewatering of the aquifer by increased pumping is being investigated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to alleviate economic and health concerns resulting from elevated ground-water levels. A ground-water quality evaluation is necessary for selecting a feasible dewatering scheme. Analyses of water samples from 63 wells show that except for iron, manganese, and dissolved solids, constituent concentrations do not exceed Illinois water-quality standards. The waters are primarily of the calcium-magnesium-bicarbonate type with some calcium-sulfate type water. Iron concentrations ranged from less than 3 to 82,000 micrograms per liter, manganese from 5 to 5,300 micrograms per liter, and dissolved solids from 140 to 3,000 milligrams per liter. These constituent concentrations exceed Illinois ' public water supply, effluent, and general water-quality standards in most samples and analysis indicates the concentrations are representative of the ambient water quality. Concentrations of nitrite + nitrate nitrogen fluoride, zinc, lead, and sulfate also exceeded Illinois water-quality standards in a few samples. The quadrangle contains surficial Quaternary deposits and locally exposed underlying upper Proterozoic intrusive, volcanic, and volcaniclastic rocks.</p>\n<p>The oldest rocks, gabbro and pyroxenite, are tentatively correlated with the Ha'il mafic-ultramafic complex to the north of the quadrangle. Two younger volcanic sequences, structurally more or less distinct but compositionally transitional, have been identified. The Aqab formation (about 640-610 Ma old) consists of slightly metamorphosed, moderately to strongly folded flows and tuffs of basalt, dacite, and minor rhyolite. An interlayered subaerial conglomerate and a lack of deep-marine sediments distinguish the Aqab from the older and distinctly oceanic Nuf formation. The.Aqab formation is overlain by felsic ash-flow tuffs and related fragmental rocks of the Al 'Awshaziyah formation whose major source is a large caldera in the western part of the quadrangle.</p>\n<p>Plutonic rocks include granites that predate and postdate both the Aqab and Al 'Awshaziyah formations. The youngest granites, dated at about 580 Ma, are the Salma and Ar Rumman batholiths and are more -alkaline and more silicic than the older granites. The Ar Rumman granite is peralkaline. Even the youngest intrusive rocks have been cut by faults that are probably related to the northwest-trending Najd fault system. No metallic mineralization has been recognized in the quadrangle.
