Previous paleoseismicity studies in the Tooele 1&deg;x2&deg; quadrangle include reports by Gilbert (1928), Bucknam (1977), Anderson and Miller (1980), Bucknam and others (1980), and Everitt and Kaliser (1980). Geologic and geophysical data pertinent to paleoseismicity of the Tooele 1&deg;x2&deg; quadrangle can be found in reports by Mikulich and Smith (1974), Cook and others (1980), Smith and Bruhn (1984), and Arabasz and others (1987). The present study is a continuation of mapping fault scarps in 1&deg;x2&deg; quadrangles in the Basin and Range province; the purpose is to determine the youngest surface-faulting age and distribution of fault scarps for earthquake-hazards analysis.</p>\n<p>The accompanying map shows 10 areas containing late Quaternary fault scarps formed on unconsolidated sediments in the Tooele 1&deg;x2&deg; quadrangle, northwestern Utah. The faulted sediments include sandy, pebbly, to bouldery colluvium, alluvium, and lacustrine deposits. They are inferred to have been deposited in Quaternary time during the latest phase of basin-filling sedimentation.</p>\n<p>Because the map shows only scarps on unconsolidated sediments, it does not show all faults that could produce earthquakes. A comprehensive map of all Quaternary faults would also include those in bedrock and at the contact of bedrock and alluvium, as well as Quaternary faults that appear only as lineaments in surficial deposits.</p>\n<p>Initial study involved photointerpretation of high-quality 1:60,000-scale black and white aerial photographs of the map area; offsets as small as 1 m could be detected from these photos if the faults cut planar surfaces of considerable extent. A map of suspected fault scarps, identified from the photointerpretation, was compiled at a scale of 1:250,000 and served as a guide for subsequent field studies in conjunction with a similar map from Bucknam (1977). We have chosen not to connect discontinuous segments of aligned fault scarps unless there is compelling evidence of continuous surface rupture.</p>\n<p>Field studies consisted of (1) confirming scarps as fault related and deleting from the preliminary map those features that were not fault related or that had no surface offset (lineaments), (2) searching for stratigraphic indicators of amount and age of offset, and (3) measuring surface profiles according to procedures described in Bucknam and Anderson (1979a). We profiled selected fault scarps where they were sufficiently continuous and unmodified by fluvial deposition or erosion.</p>\n<p>In the early morning or late afternoon when the sun was at 1ow angles, additional field searches were made for scarps resulting from ground ruptures that had not been identified during the photo interpretation phase of the study. No additional scarps were found.</p>\n<p>Techniques that yield the relative age of fault scarps can be used as a guide to the frequency and location of relatively large earthquakes. For large regions, geologically determined rates of seismic activity in the Basin and Range province are generally in good agreement with rates determined from historic seismicity (Bucknam and Algermissen, 1984). The Loreto area was selected for this study to examine the possible relation of the marine rocks to the opening of the Gulf of California, and to determine the stratigraphic and structural relations between basement rocks composed of granitic and prebatholithic rocks and overlying Tertiary (mainly Miocene) sedimentary and volcanic rocks, and by a sequence of Pliocene marine and nonmarine sedimentary rocks. The Pliocene marine rocks lie in a structural depression informally called here, the Loreto embayment. Redistribution resulted in net loss in the number of reattachment deposits in narrow reaches and aggradation of some separation deposits. Separation deposits were more stable than other types of deposits. Alluvial sand deposits that are large enough and of sufficient size for use as campsites were more stable than smaller lower-elevation deposits. Fluctuating flows between October 1985 and January 1986 caused erosion throughout the Grand Canyon, and caused erosion of some deposits created by the high flows of 1983-1985. Data collected for this study included measurements of flow velocity, scour-and-fill of sand deposits, topographic and bathymetric surveys, mapping of surface-flow patterns, water-surface slope surveys, sedimentological analysis, and replication of photographs. A classification system of alluvial sand deposits was developed on the basis of morphometric characteristics and the location of these deposits in relation to parts of recirculation zones. The surface-water quality of the Cedar River basin was monitored from May 1984 through November 1985. Depth integrated surface-water samples generally were collected monthly at six stations for a considerable range of river discharge. Samples were analyzed for concentrations of common inorganic constituents in the dissolved phase and for concentrations of primary nutrients, trace elements, organic carbon, and herbicides in the dissolved and the dissolved plus suspended phases.</p>\n<p>Water in the Cedar River was determined to be a calcium bicarbonate type; suspended-sediment concentrations ranged from 3 to 676 milligrams per liter. Concentrations of dissolved fluoride, dissolved nitrite plus nitrate, dissolved arsenic, dissolved lead, and dissolved mercury were less than those of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's drinking-water standards for public water supplies.</p>\n<p>Generally, herbicides were detected only in the dissolved phase, which indicates that herbicides are not being adsorbed on the suspended sediment. However, the lack of detection of adsorbed herbicides also may indicate a need for re-examination of traditionally acceptable methods of treating water samples at the sampling site, separating sediment and water, and extracting organic compounds from sediment. The largest concentrations of several dissolved herbicides were detected after application on agricultural areas in the spring and early summer in both wet and dry periods. However, dissolved atrazine concentrations also increased in the winter during periods of high streamflow resulting from snow melt. The maximum concentration of dissolved herbicides detected at all sampling sites during the study were: alachlor, 21 micrograms per liter; atrazine, 16 micrograms per liter; cyanazine, 8.7 micrograms per liter; metolachlor, 11.0 micrograms per liter; and metribuzin, 3.0 micrograms per liter.</p>\n<p>Herbicides can be transported from agricultural areas to the river by overland flow, drainage from agricultural areas conveyed by tile drains, and ground water. Hydrograph separation for 10 locations in the Cedar River basin indicates that the ground-water contribution varies within the basin and probably ranges from 56 to 80 percent of the annual river discharge. The predominance of ground-water contribution, the persistent detection of dissolved atrazine even during base flow, and the variety of dissolved herbicides detected in the river during the dry spring of 1985 indicate that some herbicides are being transported to the river by ground water. Atrazine transported to the Cedar River was estimated to be about 1.4 to 4.0 percent of that applied, depending on the assumed application rate. The large river discharge in June 1984, which was predominantly overland flow, contained about 70 percent of the atrazine transported to the river during The purpose of this report is to present the results of a compilation of available low flow data in the form of tables and '7Q10 flow profiles' (minimum average flow for 7 consecutive days with a 10-yr recurrence interval) (7Q10 flow plotted against distance along a stream channel) for all stream reaches of the Tennessee River tributaries where sufficient data of acceptable accuracy are available. Drainage area profiles are included for all stream basins larger than 5 sq mi, except for those in a few remote areas. This report is the fifth in a series of reports that will cover all stream basins north of the Fall Line in Georgia. It includes the parts of the Tennessee River basin in Georgia. Flow records were not adjusted for diversions or other factors that cause measured flows to represent other than natural flow conditions. The 7-day minimum flow profile was omitted for stream reaches where natural flow was known to be altered significantly.
