The intermediate aquifer consists of a series of water-bearing units and confining beds between the surficial aquifer (water table) and the Floridan aquifer. This aquifer contains from one to several water-bearing units in west-central Florida. The aquifer and confining beds consist of the Tamiami and Hawthorn Formations of late and middle Miocene age and parts of the Tampa Limestone of early Miocene age. The top of the intermediate aquifer is about 100 feet above sea level in the north and slopes to about 100 feet below sea level in the south. The thickness ranges from zero in the north to more than 600 feet in the south. The north-central part of the city of Tampa is highly urbanized; the north-west part of the area is rural or undeveloped. The area has numerous sinkholes, two of which are used as retention basins for urban storm runoff. An intermittent stream discharges into a sinkhole that is hydraulically connected with the Floridian aquifer. A well-developed cavity system occurs in the upper part of the aquifer in the southwestern and southeastern parts of the area. Groundwater velocities of 4,200 to 9,200 feet per day were determined from dye tests conducted in a sinkhole area north of Sulfur Springs. Sulfur Springs provides the city of Tampa a supplemental water supply of 20 million gallons per day. Periodically, the spring pool is closed to swimming because of the high bacteria counts in the water. The source of bacteria appears to be an internally drained sinkhole area north of the spring. In 1980, groundwater use in the study area, excluding withdrawals from Sulphur Springs, was 7.2 million gallons per day, largely for public water supplies. The city of Tampa pumped an average of 48.5 million gallons per day from the Tampa Dam Reservoir on the Hillsborough River. Hydrologic maps of the potentiometric surface, water-level changes and depths to water in the aquifer, based on Spring 1983 measurements, are presented. The Mississippi River Alluvial Aquifer is comprised of Quaternary alluvial flood-plain and terrace deposits. The aquifer generally is partially-confined. Recharge to the aquifer is principally through precipitation and surface-water bodies. The potentiometric surface map indicates two cones of depression occurring in the aquifer beneath Arkansas, Poinsett, and Cross Counties as a result of heavy pumpage within these areas. A comparison of water-level data from 1982 and 1983 shows water levels in the aquifer generally decreasing in the area within the cones of depression. Water levels generally increased in the remainder of the area south and west of the White River, and along the Mississippi River. A map showing the depth to water below land surface indicates that water levels are generally shallowest near the Mississippi River and the Fall Line and deepest within the cone of depression.
