Water resources data for the 1986 water year for Pennsylvania consist of records of discharge and water quality of streams; contents and elevations of lakes and reservoirs; and water levels and water quality of ground-water wells. This report. Volume 2, includes records from the Susquehanna and Potomac River basins. Specifically, it contains: (1) Discharge records for 93 continuous record stream-flow-gaging stations and 12 crest-stage partial-record stations; (2) elevation and contents records for 13 lakes and reservoirs; (3) water-quality records for 22 streamflow-gaging stations, for 8 ungaged streamsites, and for 30 wells or springs; and (4) water-level records for 41 observation wells. Locations of these sites are shown on figures 7-10. Additional water data were collected at various sites not involved in the systematic data-collection program and are published as miscellaneous measurements and analyses and represent 3 special study and miscellaneous streamflow sites and 22 ground-water quality sites. These data together with the data in Volumes 1 and 3, represent that part of the National Water Data System operated by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State, local, and Federal agencies in Pennsylvania.

Ground water in the aquifer is contained in consolidated sedimentary rocks consisting of the Admire, Council Grove, and Chase Groups, Wellington Formation, and Garber Sandstone and in the unconsolidated Quaternary alluvium and terrace deposits that occur along the major stream systems in the study area. The Garber Sandstone and the Wellington Formation comprise the main flow system and, as such, the aquifer is often referred to as the 'Garber-Wellington aquifer.' The consolidated sedimentary rocks consist of interbedded lenticular sandstone, shale, and siltstone beds deposited in similar deltaic environments in early Permian time. Arsenic, chromium, and selenium are found in the ground water of the Central Oklahoma aquifer in concentrations that, in places, exceed the primary drinking-water standards of the Environmental Protection Agency. Gross-alpha concentrations also exceed the primary standards in some wells, and uranium concentrations are uncommonly high in places. \r\n\r\nAs a prerequisite to a surface and subsurface solid-phase geochemical study, this report summarizes the general geology of the Central Oklahoma study area. Five separate disciplines within the overall theme were discussed: physical and chemical partitioning of inorganic constituents; analysis association, and effects of organic constituents; bioavailability of sediment-bound metals; concepts and methods regarding physical properties of sediments; and simulation of transport-related properties. The discussions of the participants regarding needs and possible future directions are summarized. Well logs and outcrop descriptions indicate the Navajo Sandstone consists of the Lamb Point Tongue and an unnamed upper member that are separated by the Tenney Canyon Tongue of the Kayenta Formation. The main Kayenta Formation underlies the Lamb Point Tongue. The Lamb Point Tongue and the upper member of the Navajo Sandstone are saturated and hydraulically connected through the Tenney Canyon Tongue. Available data indicate that precipitation percolates to the groundwater reservoir where the Navajo Sandstone crops out. Estimates of the rate of recharge at the outcrop range from 0.1 to as much as 2.8 in/yr. Water level data indicate that water moves from the upper member of the Navajo Sandstone, through the Tenney Canyon Tongue, and into the Lamb Point Tongue. Lateral flow is generally from the outcrop areas toward the incised canyons formed by tributaries of Kanab Creek and Johnson Wash. Direction and rate of groundwater movement and the location and character of the natural hydrologic boundaries in the northern part of the area where the Navajo Sandstone is buried cannot be determined conclusively without additional water level data. On the basis of their aqueous solubilities, nonionic organic compounds partition themselves among water, dissolved organic matter, particulate organic matter, and the lipid reservoirs of aquatic organisms. Ionized organic compounds can be adsorbed to sediments, thereby reducing their aqueous concentrations. Transformation processes of photolysis, hydrolysis, biodegradation, and volatilization can attenuate organic compounds, and attenuation rates commonly follow a first-order kinetic process. \r\n\r\nEight groups of manmade organic compounds are discussed: \r\n\r\n1. Polychlorinated biphenyls and organochlorine insecticides, \r\n2. Carbamate and organophosphorus insecticides, \r\n3. Herbicides, \r\n4. Phenols, \r\n5. Halogenated aliphatic and monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, \r\n6. Phthalate esters, \r\n7. Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, and \r\n8. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. \r\n\r\nFor each compound group, data pertaining to use, production, and properties are presented and discussed. Processes that influence the environmental fate of each group, as determined primarily through laboratory studies, are reviewed, and important fate processes are identified. Environmental concentrations of compounds from each group in water, biota, and sediment are given to demonstrate representative values for comparison with concentrations determined during ongoing research. The granodiorite grades eastward into strongly deformed mylonitic rocks mapped as part of the Santa Rosa mylonite zone. Metasedimentary rocks, orthogneiss, and anatexites of the Palm Canyon Complex were displaced westward over the Santa Rosa mylonite zone along low-angle thrust faults that are nearly synchronous with the mylonite zone. The Pliocene and (or) Pleistocene Bautista Formation unconformably overlies the mid-Cretaceous plutonic rocks.
\nGeologic and geochemical data indicate that the study area has high resource potential for marble, and moderate resource potential for epithermal gold deposits and tungsten skarns. The Desert Divide Group and the Palm Canyon Complex contain large resources of marble quarried for Portland cement and for construction applications. Gold occurs in quartz veins and pegmatites in the Desert Divide Group and the Penrod Quartz Monzonite. Skarns in the Desert Divide Group contain scheelite and anomalous concentrations of arsenic and beryllium. Thin layers of tremolite asbestos along low-angle thrust faults occur outside of the study area.

These data were compiled to provide this distribution map (sheet 1) and tabulation (sheet 2) of \"principal facts\" on mass movement of the northwest Atlantic Continental Slope. Although we prepared this inventory to facilitate our study of Quaternary mass movement along the U.S. Continental Slope, we judged the compilation to be large enough and detailed enough to be published as a generally useful data source and compendium. Sheet 3 shows examples of mass movement styles.

The model simulates flow in three dimensions. The report includes detailed explanations of physical and mathematical concepts on which the model is based and an explanation of how those concepts are incorporated in the modular structure of the computer program. The modular structure consists of a Main Program and a series of highly independent subroutines called 'modules.' The modules are grouped into 'packages.' Each package deals with a specific feature of the hydrologic system which is to be simulated, such as flow from rivers or flow into drains, or with a specific method of solving linear equations which describe the flow system, such as the Strongly Implicit Procedure or Slice-Successive Overrelaxation. \r\n\r\nThe division of the program into modules permits the user to examine specific hydrologic features of the model independently. This also facilita development of additional capabilities because new packages can be added to the program without modifying the existing packages. The input and output systems of the computer program are also designed to permit maximum flexibility. \r\n\r\nGround-water flow within the aquifer is simulated using a block-centered finite-difference approach. Layers can be simulated as confined, unconfined, or a combination of confined and unconfined. Flow associated with external stresses, such as wells, areal recharge, evapotranspiration, drains, and streams, can also be simulated. The finite-difference equations can be solved using either the Strongly Implicit Procedure or Slice-Successive Overrelaxation. \r\n\r\nThe program is written in FORTRAN 77 and will run without modification on most computers that have a FORTRAN 77 compiler. A network of 41 wells was used to delineate 4 cross sections adjacent to river pools 2 and 5 of the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System to examine groundwater levels at various distances from the river. The hydraulic gradient of water levels in the alluvial aquifer along these cross sections indicates that the river is losing water to the adjacent aquifer. The effect on groundwater levels in the alluvial aquifer caused by pool-stage fluctuations was most pronounced at distances less than about 2 miles from the Arkansas River. At distances greater than about 2 miles, the changes in groundwater levels probably were the result of water levels rising in the aquifer since the heavy summer irrigation withdrawals have ceased. An equation useful for estimating the distribution of head change an aquifer in response to river-pool-stage changes, was applied to the study area to estimate the effect of a 1-foot rise in pool stage on water levels in the adjacent alluvial aquifer after equilibrium conditions have been established. The theoretical head change (rise) in the aquifer was estimated to range from 1-foot at the Arkansas River to 0.57 foot at a distance of 5 miles away from the river. Recent advances in equipment, sound sources, and computer interpretation techniques make seismic refraction a highly effective and economical means of obtaining subsurface data in hydrologic studies. Aquifers that can be defined by one or more high-seismic-velocity surface, such as (1) alluvial or glacial deposits in consolidated rock valleys, (2) limestone or sandstone underlain by metamorphic or igneous rock, or (3) saturated unconsolidated deposits overlain by unsaturated unconsolidated deposits, are ideally suited for seismic-refraction methods. These methods allow economical collection of subsurface data, provide the basis for more efficient collection of data by test drilling or aquifer tests, and result in improved hydrologic studies. This manual briefly reviews the basics of seismic-refraction theory and principles. It emphasizes the use of these techniques in hydrologic investigations and describes the planning, equipment, field procedures, and interpretation techniques needed for this type of study.
