The samples were taken in December 1983, June 1984, and June 1985. All of the samples were taken downstream from mine-water discharge points of abandoned lead and zinc mines. The 34 samples taken in December 1983 and June 1984 were analyzed semiquantitatively by emission spectrography for 64 elements and quantitatively for cadmium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel, lead, sulfur, zinc, and organic carbon. The geochemical maps show the distributions of selected individual elements (Chaffee and others, 1988 a, b, c) and the distributions of selected groups of elements (Chaffee, 1988a, b, c). Discussions accompanying the individual element maps are restricted to mineral residences of the individual elements as well as to what types of mineral deposits and environments may be represented by anomalies of a particular element. Bathymetric surveys during 1984-85 determined that, for the full-pool water surface elevation of 76.8 ft, the volume of Lake Marion is 1,425 ,000 acre-ft, and for the full-pool water surface elevation of 75.0 ft, the volume of Lake Moultrie is 1,060,000 acre-ft. These volumes are considered accurate to within 5%. Comparison with volumes determined in 1941, when the reservoirs were filled, shows decreased in volume of 73,000 acre-ft in Lake Marion and 30,000 acre-ft in Lake Moultrie. These changes in volume, however, are subject to relatively large possible error because they represent relatively small differences between relatively large volumes, and because the accuracy of the 1941 volumes is not known. Measurements of sediment inflow and outflow and of deposition rate suggest the volume losses were more likely about 29,000 acre-ft in Lake Marion and about 1,600 acre-ft in Lake Moultrie. The discrepancy in the estimate of volume changes does not affect the accuracy of the volume computation or the maps. DSi concentrations at Chain Bridge are positively correlated with river discharge; river discharge is an important factor controlling rates of supply, dilution, and residence time. When river flow is high, the longitudinal DSi distribution is conservative. When river flow is low, other processes, such as phytoplankton uptake, benthic flux, resuspension, ground-water discharge, and water-column dissolution of diatoms, tend to be more influential than the river. Elevated concentrations of DSi in sewage-treatment-plant effluent in the Washington, D.C., area raise the DSi concentration of receiving Potomac River water. The tidal river zone serves as a net sink for DSi as a result of phytoplankton uptake. Ultimately, the biogenic silica from the tidal river is transported to the transition zone, where it is mineralized. As a result, the DSi concentration in the transition zone increases during summer.
