Areas in the Coastal Plain with existing or potential saltwater intrusion are delineated. Data collected through 1981 indicate that freshwater aquifers in parts of seven Coastal-Plain counties are contaminated by saline water. Encroachment of saltwater into freshwater aquifers in the Sayreville area of Middlesex County and in the lower peninsula of Cape May County has been reported for about 40 years and is now more extensive. Several other areas are experiencing limited saltwater intrusion. These include the Keyport-Union Beach area in Monmouth County, areas along the Delaware estuary in Gloucester and Salem Counties, and at Point Pleasant Beach and Seaside Heights in Ocean County. The continuing updip movement of saline water in the Potomac-Raritan-Magothy aquifer system is also threatening existing freshwater supplies in the interior areas of Gloucester and Salem Counties. Saltwater intrusion has resulted from extensive ground-water withdrawals. The resultant freshwater head declines have caused reversals in the natural hydraulic gradients that permit inland movement of saline water from adjacent saltwater bodies. Thermal waters at Drakesbad and in Little Hot Springs Valley, hot spring localities characterized by neutral pH and low Cl containing water, may have equilibrated in shallow aquifers so that temperatures estimated by both the Na-K-Ca and Na-Li geothermometers approach the measured spring temperatures of 65? to 95?C. Waters rich in chloride (>2000 mg/L), such as those at Growler Hot Spring and Morgan Hot Springs, situated south of LVNP, are the most appropriate springs for liquid chemical geothermometry and indicate subsurface temperatures between 220? and 230?C. The chemical and thermal characteristics of these springs may result either from boiling at depth and subsequent mixing with meteoric water or from conductive cooling during lateral flow. In either case ~220? to 230?C thermal water probably originates inside LVNP and flows south to Morgan Hot Springs.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83311","usgsCitation":"Thompson, J., 1983, Chemical analyses of thermal and nonthermal springs in Lassen Volcanic National Park and vicinity, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-311, 27 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83311.","productDescription":"27 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144142,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0311/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39277,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0311/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e1e4b07f02db5e496d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Thompson, J. The model was calibrated by matching observed and simulated water-level changes for December 1977 through March 1980. Drawdowns for three different hypothetical pumping rates are simulated with the calibrated flow model. An increase in the pumping rate from the steady-state rate of 10 cubic feet per second to 48 cubic feet per second results in water-level declines of 10 to 20 feet near the area of the pumping wells. Declines of 20 to 40 feet result when the pumping rate is increased to 70 cubic feet per second, and a simulated pumping well goes dry when the combined pumping is increased to 94 cubic feet per second. For the first two cases, steady-flow conditions are reached after 12 years of pumping; infiltration through riverbeds accounts for 28 to 33% of the pumpage.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/wri834022","usgsCitation":"Razem, A., 1983, Simulations of non-steady flow in a glacial outwash aquifer, southern Franklin County, Ohio: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 83-4022, iv, 21 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri834022.","productDescription":"iv, 21 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":158906,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4022/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":58133,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4022/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f6e4b07f02db5f1a6d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Razem, A. This stratigraphic interval has been called the Burro Canyon Formation by several workers (Craig and others, 1959; Smith and others, 1961; Saucier, 1974). Although similarities in lithology and stratigraphic position exist between this unit and the Burro Canyon Formation in Colorado, no direct correlation has been made between the two. Results of 25 aquifer tests and permeability determinations from 43 sidewall cores show that the hydraulic characteristics of the aquifer are variable. Studies of the Carrizo showed that hydraulic conductivity increased as sand-bed thickness increased. Hydraulic conductivity averaged 29 feet per day for sand beds 25 to 100 feet in thickness and 40 feet per day for sand beds 100 to 200 feet in thickness. Based on the aquifer tests and sidewall core analyses, hydraulic conductivity does not increase with increased thickness for the Wilcox part of the aquifer. This stratigraphic interval has been called the Burro Canyon Formation by several workers (Craig and others, 1959; Smith and others, 1961; Saucier, 1974). Although similarities in lithology and stratigraphic position exist between this unit and the Burro Canyon Formation in Colorado, no direct correlation has been made between the two. Two-thirds of the quadrangle is underlain by Precambrian metasedimentary, metavolcanic, plutonic, and hypabyssal intrusive rocks; this area is in part mountainous and in part uneven plains. One-third is underlain by Cenozoic basalt and is part of Harrat Buqum. Flows, which surround volcanic cones, form an east-dipping surface of low relief. \r\n\r\nPrecambrian metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks are mostly metamorphosed andesite and basalt flow rocks and turfs and are divided into two principal belts in the eastern and central to western parts of the quadrangle. Plutonic rocks, which are part of the An Nimas batholith, consist of tonalite, diorite, and some quartz diorite. These rocks are postdated by younger plutonic and hypabyssal rocks that include extensive graphic granite and rhyolite, several small bodies of granite, and meta-andesite dikes. \r\n\r\nVolcanoes on Harrat Buqum are cinder cones, composite cones, shield volcanoes, and lava cones; basalt flows originating in some of the volcanoes can be traced down the slope of the harrat, and some have blocked Wadi Ranyah causing deposition of silt, sand, and gravel. \r\n\r\nRadiometric age dating of Precambrian rocks from adjacent quadrangles suggests that the layered rocks of the Al Ufayriyah quadrangle may have formed about 900 Ma ago, plutonic rocks of the An Nimas batholith 835 to 800 Ma ago, and younger plutonic rocks from 640 to 570 Ma ago. Basalts of Harrat Buqum range in age from 3.5 to 1.72 \r\n\r\nA zone in the eastern part of the quadrangle contains small gold-quartz veins, a quartz breccia reef, and a contact metasomatic iron deposit.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr83295","usgsCitation":"Greene, R.C., 1983, Reconnaissance geology of the Al Ufayriyah quadrangle, sheet 20/42 A, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-295, 1 map ;48 x 45 cm. +1 booklet (21 p. : map ; 28 cm.), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83295.","productDescription":"1 map ;48 x 45 cm. +1 booklet (21 p. : map ; 28 cm.)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":135383,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0295/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":80230,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0295/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":80231,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0295/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a6fe4b07f02db640cef","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Greene, Robert C.","contributorId":36108,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Greene","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":226550,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

These deposits, as yet undetected, would occur in the Permian Cutler Formation and in the lower part of the Triassic Chinle Formation, rock units that are, for the most part, present only in the subsurface. The presence of these deposits is inferred because such deposits occur in rocks of equivalent age in adjacent areas. The deposit is situated in a steeply dipping fault system that cuts Proterozoic metamorphic rocks. The host rocks represent a submarine volcanic system with associated chert and iron- and sulfide-rich pelitic rocks. Where faulted, the more competent garnetiferous and quartzitic units behaved brittlely and created a deep, narrow conduit. \r\n\r\nThe ores formed 70-72 m.y. ago beneath 3 km of Phanerozoic sedimentary rocks. Mineralization included two episodes of alteration and three stages of vein-mineralization. Early carbonate-sericite alteration pseudomorphically replaced mafic minerals, whereas the ensuing hematite-adularia episode replaced only the earlier alteration assemblage. Early vein mineralization produced a minor sulfide-adularia-carbonate assemblage. Later vein mineralization generated the uranium ores in two successive stages. Carbonates, sulfides, and adularia filled the remaining voids. Clastic dikes composed of fault gouge and, locally, ore were injected into new and existing fractures. \r\n\r\nGeologic and chemical evidence suggest that virtually all components of the deposit were derived from major hornblende gneiss units and related rocks. The initial fluids were evolved connate/metamorphic water that infiltrated and resided along the extensive fault zones. Complex fault movements in the frontal zone of the eastern Front Range caused the fluids to migrate to the most permeable segments of the fault zones. Heat was supplied by increased crustal heat flow related to igneous activity in the nearby Colorado mineral belt. Temperatures decreased from 225?C to 125?C during later mineralization, and the pressure episodically dropped from 1000 bars. The CO2 fugacity was initially near 100 bars, and uranium was carried as a dicarbonate complex. Sudden decreases in confining pressure during fault movement caused evolution of CO2 and a consequent increase in pH. Uranium was released with destruction of the uranyl complexes; it was subsequently reduced by aqueous sulfur species, thereby leading to the precipitation of pitchblende.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83417","usgsCitation":"Wallace, A.R., 1983, Alteration and vein mineralization, Schwartzwalder uranium deposit, Front Range, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-417, 186 p. ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83417.","productDescription":"186 p. ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":145473,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0417/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39426,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0417/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adee4b07f02db68751b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wallace, Alan R.","contributorId":6024,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wallace","given":"Alan","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163345,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The lack of current-meter measurements, coupled with backwater conditions, makes definition of a single stage-discharge relation impossible. However, limit curves can be defined that would encompass such a relation. Backwater is defined as water backed up or retarded in its course as compared with water flowing under normal or natural conditions. This results in a rise in stage above normal water level while the discharge remains unaffected. Backwater is usually caused by temporary obstruction(s) to the flow downstream. Backwater at Gainesville Dam is due to large tributary inflow and return of flood plain flows to the main channel during recessions. The discharges obtained from 105 computations of flow through the dam for the tailwater and 59 for the pool were plotted versus stage. These plots illustrate, by the scatter of these data points, the variations in backwater. Curves were drawn to envelope the extreme plot patterns showing possible ranges of several feet in stage for any given discharge for both the pool and the tailwater.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83942","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Nelson, G.H., and Ming, C.O., 1983, Preliminary stage-discharge relations for Tombigbee River at Gainesville Dam, near Gainesville, Alabama: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-942, 16 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83942.","productDescription":"16 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":156317,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0942/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":53211,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0942/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":53212,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0942/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":53213,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0942/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":53214,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0942/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b32e4b07f02db6b48f2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nelson, G.
