Between May and December 1980 data were collected as far south as the Coos River in Western Oregon, as far north as Baker Bay in Southwestern Washington and as far inland as Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River. In an elutriation test, bottom material from a dredging site is mixed with native water and the filtrate is analysed. Elutriation test results showed variability in concentrates of dissolved chemicals as follows: in micrograms per liter (micro g/l), manganese ranged from 0 to 10,000, iron from 10 to 4300, zinc from 1 to 90, and phenols from 9 to 420; in milligrams per liter (mg/l), ammonia as nitrogen ranged from 0.03 to 46 and organic carbon from 0.5 to 45. Pan concentrates collected in and around these plutons were enriched in tin and tungsten relative to the concentrate population. Rock samples of these leucocratic, muscovite-bearing, peraluminous granites contained anomalously high concentrations of lithium, fluorine, beryllium, lead, rubidium, niobium, yttrium, tin, bismuth, silver, and tungsten. \r\n\r\nTen tin-anomalous plutons were located in the study area. The plutons are typically small, less than 10 km2 in areal extent, and circular to elliptical in plan view. The resource potential of these latest Proterozoic plutons has not been established; economically exploitable concentrations of tin, tungsten, molybdenum, or zinc may be present, and followup studies are warranted. Further, two of the plutons are characterized by higher than normal total-count radioactivity and have potential for uranium, thorium, or rare-earth element deposits.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83369","usgsCitation":"Du Bray, E., Elliott, J., and Stoeser, D.B., 1983, Geochemical evaluation of felsic plutonic rocks in the eastern and southeastern Arabian Shield, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-369, 57 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83369.","productDescription":"57 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142335,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0369/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36228,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0369/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36229,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0369/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36230,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0369/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36231,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0369/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b23e4b07f02db6ae2e5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Du Bray, E. Commencing in 1967 and continuing to date (1982), extensive measurements of shear- and compressional-wave velocities have been made in five tunnel complexes in Rainier and Aqueduct Mesas and in one tunnel complex in Shoshone Mountain. The results of these surveys to 1980 are compiled in this report. In addition, extensive horizontal drilling was initiated in 1967 in connection with geologic exploration in these tunnel complexes for sites for nuclear weapons tests. Seismic and electrical surveys were conducted in the majority of these holes. The type and location of these tunnel and borehole surveys are indexed in this report. Synthesis of the seismic refraction data indicates a mean compressional-wave velocity near the nuclear device point (WP) of 23 tunnel events of 2,430 m/s (7,970 f/s) with a range of 1,846-2,753 m/s (6,060-9,030 f/s). The mean shear-wave velocity of 17 tunnel events is 1,276 m/s (4,190 f/s) with a range of 1,140-1,392 m/s (3,740-4,570 f/s). Experience indicates that these velocity variations are due chiefly to the extent of fracturing and (or) the presence of partially saturated rock in the region of the survey.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr83399","usgsCitation":"Carroll, R.D., and Kibler, J.E., 1983, Sourcebook of locations of geophysical surveys in tunnels and horizontal holes including results of seismic-refraction surveys, Rainier Mesa, Aqueduct Mesa, and Area 16, Nevada Test Site: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-399, Report: iv, 85 p.; 12 Plates: 24.94 × 9.99 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83399.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 85 p.; 12 Plates: 24.94 × 9.99 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141557,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35830,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/plate-01.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35831,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/plate-02.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35832,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/plate-03.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35833,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/plate-04.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35834,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/plate-05.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35835,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/plate-06.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35836,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/plate-07.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35837,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/plate-08.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35838,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/plate-09.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35839,"rank":409,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/plate-10.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35842,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":392065,"rank":16,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_14011.htm"},{"id":35840,"rank":410,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/plate-11.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35841,"rank":411,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/plate-12.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","otherGeospatial":"Aqueduct Mesa, Area 16, Nevada Test Site, Rainier Mesa","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -116.25,\n              37\n            ],\n            [\n              -116,\n              37\n            ],\n            [\n              -116,\n              37.25\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.25,\n              37.25\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.25,\n              37\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e6e4b07f02db5e76e6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Carroll, R. A synthesis of stratigraphic variations in mineral species and diversity in Morrison sandstones reveals an increasing upward igneous component, characterized by euhedral zircon and subhedral apatite. Complementing this trend, the predominantly well-rounded assemblage of the Recapture Member changes to a mixed assemblage of rounded and angular grains in the Westwater Canyon Member. Overall, the low diversity in mineral species indicates a sedimentary, low- to medium-grade-metamorphic, and acid igneous parentage for Morrison sediments; however, post-depositional processes have played a significant role in determining the present mineralogy. \r\n\r\nThe roles that diagenesis and weathering have played in determining the present aspect of the assemblage, which is a mature garnet-zircon-apatite-tourmaline suite, cannot be overemphasized. For instance, the presence of authigenically etched to skeletal garnet and staurolite implies that entire grains have been destroyed. Comparison of cores with measured sections indicates that near-surface weathering has caused the destruction of some minerals, notably apatite, sensitive to acidic conditions. Therefore, in order to interpret the sedimentology, stratigraphic intervals in which post-depositional processes have affected the mineralogy were identified. These diagenetic zones may prove to be most useful in delineating the past movements and compositions of interstitial, possibly ore-forming, fluids.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83191","usgsCitation":"Hansley, P.L., 1983, The nonopaque, detrital heavy mineralogy of the Morrison Formation near Crownpoint, San Juan Basin, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-191, 34 p. ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83191.","productDescription":"34 p. ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144302,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0191/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37060,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0191/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a80e4b07f02db6498b6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hansley, Paula L.","contributorId":29380,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hansley","given":"Paula","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159504,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The floods resulted from a near-stationary cold front, which moved slowly across Louisiana and Mississippi. Flood heights and discharges of many streams exceeded previously known maximums of record, and for many the recurrence interval of peak discharge exceeded 100 years. On Black Creek, near Brooklyn, Miss., the previous maximum stage (since 1961) was exceeded by 4.26 ft, and the April 7 peak discharge of 42,500 cu ft/sec was about two times the previous maximum discharge. This flood exceeded the 100-yr event. In southeastern Louisiana, the area with the most severe flooding was in the Bogue Chitto basin. At the Franklinton, LA, Station, the April 7 peak discharge of 125,000 cu ft/sec was more than two times the previous maximum discharge. In April 1900 the stage at this site was 29.6 ft, 4.9 ft higher than the April 1981 peak. An extreme event also occurred on the Tchefuncta River near Franklinton, LA. The previous maximum stage (since 1949) was exceeded by 3.75 ft, and the April 6 discharge of 26 ,900 cu ft/sec is more than three times the previous maximum. This discharge also exceeded the 100-yr event. Combined flood damages for both States totaled in the hundred of millions of dollars. Onshore, more than 6,300 exploratory wells and more than 21,000 development wells were drilled in Louisiana's eight southernmost parishes between 1937 and 1977. Nearly all those wells were in wetlands or inland water bodies. The wetlands, totaling more than 2 million hectares (ha), extend inland to roughly latitude 30? N, and are about 15 percent forested swamp and 85 percent nonforested marsh. Inland waters within the Louisiana coastal zone total more than 1 million ha. Nearly all these waters are quite shallow. More than 235,000 ha of this coastal area is used for major activities associated with the extraction of oil and gas. Production in the eight southern parishes peaked in 1970 to 120 million m3 of oil and 172 billion m 3 of gas. Connecting extensive onshore fields--and also servicing offshore fields--are intricate networks of canals for pipelines and maritime traffic related to the oil and gas industry. \r\n\r\nOffshore, more than 2,400 drilling and production platforms had been installed by May of 1981. Oil production from wells in both Federal and State waters off Louisiana peaked at 71 million m3 in 1972. Offshore gas production continues to increase, with 131 billion m3, in 1979. Since the early 1950's southern Louisiana's population has shifted from remote rural areas in the marshes to the more densely settled areas on the natural levees and beach ridges where employment is available in oil-field support industries and businesses. In 1975, in the 14 primary settlement clusters within the coastal wetlands, more than 3,600 advertised business activities were connected directly to the oil and gas industry. This compares to about 1,200 such activities in 1955, at the start of offshore development. These businesses are listed as water transportation, transportation equipment, pipelines, chemicals, special trade contractors, and petroleum refining, as well as actual oil and gas extraction. \r\n\r\nArea measurements of urban land uses reveal a major concentration of industry and transportation facilities along the navigable waterways. Ship and rig construction are important activities; of 148 fixed drilling platforms under construction in the United States in March 1981, 94 were being built in Louisiana to be barged out into the Gulf of Mexico and beyond. Of the 122 petroleum-industry support boats being built in the United States in 1976, 82 were in Louisiana shipyards; the worldwide total was estimated to be only about 200. This fossil is identified as a primitive species of Masritherium, a North and East African genus restricted, previously to the later early Miocene. This identification indicates that the age of the Baid formation, long problematical, is early Miocene and, moreover, shows that the age of the fossil site is earliest Miocene (from 25 to 21Ma). The Wadi Sabya anthracothere is the first species of fossil mammal recorded from western Saudi Arabia, and more important, it indicates an early Miocene age for the volcanic deposits of a continental rift-valley that preceded the initial sea-floor spreading of the Red Sea.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr83488","usgsCitation":"Madden, G.T., Schmidt, D.L., and Whitmore, F., 1983, Mastritherium (Artiodactyla, Anthracotheriidae) from Wadi Sabya, southwestern Saudi Arabia; an earliest Miocene age for continental rift-valley volcanic deposits of the Red Sea margin: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-488, Report: i, 26 p., ill., maps, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83488.","productDescription":"Report: i, 26 p., ill., maps","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143636,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0488/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37989,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0488/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"Saudi Arabia","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              42.5,\n              17\n            ],\n            [\n              42.5,\n              17.5\n            ],\n            [\n              43,\n              17.5\n            ],\n            [\n              43,\n              17\n            ],\n            [\n              42.5,\n              17\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a27e4b07f02db60fe7e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Madden, Gary T.","contributorId":37750,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Madden","given":"Gary","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160883,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Schmidt, Dwight Lyman","contributorId":54191,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schmidt","given":"Dwight","email":"","middleInitial":"Lyman","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160884,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Whitmore, Frank C.","contributorId":59428,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Whitmore","given":"Frank C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160885,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
