The scope of this study was limited to the assessment of conventional recoverable petroleum resources occurring in the designated and proposed Wilderness Lands of the Western United States that are administered under four Federal agencies: Bureau of Land Management (BLM), U.S. Forest Service (USFS), National Park Service (NPS), and Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). \r\n\r\nThe total area of the study included approximately 74 million acres of Wilderness Lands in these 11 Western States: Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. The 74 million acres represent 31 percent of the total Federal lands within these 11 Western States. Approximately 49 percent of all the lands in these States are federally owned. \r\n\r\nThe objective of this study was to assemble through various means all the available pertinent information that could be brought together within the USGS and integrate these data into a computer-based digital cartographic data system that was focused upon the single issue of reviewing the known geological and geophysical data to determine the geologic characteristics favorable or unfavorable for the occurrence of petroleum resources in these Wilderness Lands. In a joint effort in the USGS between the Geologic Division (GD) and the National Mapping Division (NMD) all of the mappable information used in this study was prepared and processed by using digital cartographic techniques. These include digitizing the location and boundaries of the Wilderness Lands; acreage calculations; the boundaries of the USGS petroleum provinces; and the geologic and tectonic boundaries within each petroleum province and State. In addition, searches were conducted on well data files which provided the locations and geologic information on over 5,000 wells drilled within or immediately adjacent to the Wilderness Lands. \r\n\r\nAn analysis of all the geologic characteristics favorable or unfavorable for petroleum occurrence in conjunction with the geologic settings for the Wilderness Lands scattered within the framework of the petroleum provinces was performed by a team of geologists on each of the wilderness tracts. The geologic characteristics reviewed for each tract included the presence or absence of the following: adequate source beds and reservoir rocks; adequate trapping mechanisms; favorable thermal and maturation histories; presence of petroleum seeps or adjacent wells with shows or production; and the presence of favorable sedimentary rock sections underlying volcanic terrane or faulted and overthrust areas. \r\n\r\nA description of the geology and geologic framework is provided for each State along with an explanation of the interpretative geology and evaluation of the petroleum potential within the locale of each of the wilderness tracts. \r\n\r\nThe assessment of the petroleum resources on the Wilderness Lands was completed in two separate stages. In the first stage the geologists evaluated the geological characteristics for the favorability or lack of favorability for the occurrence of oil and natural gas within each wilderness tract and assigned a qualitative rating for each tract's potential for the occurrence of recoverable oil and gas resources. In the second stage in evaluating the petroleum potential for the wilderness tracts, an effort was made to arrive at a quantitative assessment within the framework of the USGS's latest published resource estimates which are made on a province basis. The geologic characteristics evaluated for the favorability of petroleum occurrence within each of the clusters of wilderness tracts were the determining factors for the subjective assessments of the petroleum potential for each wilderness tract occurring within the respective basin or province. These water-quality data were collected prior to September 30, 1981, and are available in computer files of the U.S. Geological Survey. The principal water-bearing rocks in Kentucky were combined into 10 major groups to aid in data summary preparation and general description of the ground-water quality of the State. Ground water in Kentucky is generally fresh near the outcrop of the rocks comprising the aquifer. Slightly saline to briny water occurs at variable depths beneath the freshwater. Preparation of quadrilinear diagrams revealed three principal geochemical processes in the aquifers of Kentucky: (1) mixing of freshwater and saline water in an interface zone; (2) dedolomitization of the Devonian and Silurian and Lower Mississippian carbonate rocks; (3) sodium for calcium exchange in the freshwater sections of many of the sandstone-shale aquifers. A number of errors and deficiencies were found in the data base. The principal deficiencies were: (1) very few complete analyses which included important field measurements; (2) inadequate definition of the chemistry of the freshwater-saline water interface zone throughout much of the State; (3) no analyses of stable isotopes and dissolved gases; (4) fewer than 10 analyses of most trace metals, radionuclides, and man-made organic chemicals; and (5) no data on bacteria in ground water from any aquifer in the State. The central part of the province is occupied by the Tatar arch, which contains the major share of the oil fields of the province. The Perm-Bashkir arch forms the northeastern part of the regional high, and the Zhigulevsko-Orenburg arch makes up the southern part. These arches are separated from one another by elongate downwarps. \r\n\r\nThe platform cover overlies an Archean crystalline basement and consists of seven main sedimentation cycles as follows: 1) Riphean (lower Bavly) continental sandstone, shale, and conglomerate beds from 500 to 5,000 m thick deposited in aulacogens. 2) Vendian (upper Bavly) continental and marine shale and sandstone up to 3,000 m thick. 3) Middle Devonian-Tournaisian transgressive deposits, which are sandstone, siltstone, and shale in the lower part and carbonates with abundant reefs in the upper; thickness is 300-1,000 m. In the upper carbonate part is the Kamsko-Kinel trough system, which consists of narrow interconnected deep-water troughs. 4) The Visean-Namurian-Bashkirian cycle, which began with deposition of Visean clastics that draped over reefs of the previous cycle and filled in an erosional relief that had formed in some places on the sediments of the previous cycle. The Visean clastics are overlain by marine carbonates. Thickness of the cycle is 50-800 m. 5) Early Moscovian-Early Permian terrigenous clastic deposits and marine carbonate beds 1,000-3,000 m thick. 6) The late Early Permian-Late Permian cycle, which reflects maximum growth of the Ural Mountains and associated Ural foredeep. Evaporites were first deposited, then marine limestones and dolomites, which intertongue eastward with clastic sediments from the Ural Mountains. 7) Continental redbeds of Triassic age and mixed continental and marine elastic beds of Jurassic and Cretaceous age, which were deposited on the southern, southwestern, and northern margins of the Russian platform; they are generally absent in the Volga-Ural province, however. \r\n\r\nThe Volga-Ural oil and gas basin is a single artesian system that contains seven aquifers separated by seals. The areas of greatest hydraulic head are in the eastern parts of the basin near areas where the aquifers crop out on the western slopes of the Ural Mountains. The Peri-Caspian basin is the principal drainage area of the artesian system. \r\n\r\nApproximately 600 oil and gas fields and 2,000 pools have been found in the Volga-Ural province. Nine productive sequences are recognized as follows: 1) Upper Proterozoic (Bavly beds), which are promising but not yet commercial. 2) Clastic Devonian, which contains the major reserves and includes the main pays of the super-giant Romashkino field. 3) Carbonate Upper Devonian and lowermost Carboniferous, which is one of the main reef-bearing intervals. 4) Visean (Lower Carboniferous) elastics, which are the main pays in the super-giant Arian field. 5) Carbonate Lower and Middle Carboniferous. 6) Clastic Middle Carboniferous Moscovian. 7) Carbonate Middle and Upper Carboniferous. 8) Carbonate-evaporite Lower Permian, which contains the major gas reserves and the lower part of the Melekess tar deposits. 9) Clastic-carbonate Upper Permian, which contains the major part of the Melekess tar deposits.\r\n\r\nThe Volga-Ural province is divided into several productive regions on a basis of differences in structure, distribution of reservoir and source-rock facies, and general composition of the petroleum accumulations. These regions are the Tatar arch, Birsk saddle, Upper Kama depression, Perm-Bashkir arch, Ufa-Orenburg monocline, Melekess-Sernovodsko-Abdulino basin, Zhligulevsko-Orenburg arch, Ural foredeep, and north borders of the Peri-Casplan depression. \r\n\r\nExploration activity has declined in recent years; however, interest remains high in several parts of the province, particula","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83711","usgsCitation":"Peterson, J.A., and Clarke, J.W., 1983, Geology of the Volga-Ural petroleum province and detailed description of the Ramashkino and Arlan oil fields: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-711, vii, 175 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83711.","productDescription":"vii, 175 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143606,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0711/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38498,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0711/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c9b7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Peterson, James A.","contributorId":106872,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Peterson","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161780,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Clarke, James W.","contributorId":35297,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Clarke","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161779,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate ions predominate in the more dilute ground and surface water. Thermal waters from springs and wells have concentrations of 900 milligrams per liter or more and are characterized by high concentrations of sodium and sulfate. Attempts to account for the origin of the hot springs on the basis of mixing relations and isotopic analyses were inconclusive; the springs may represent mixtures of thermal and nonthermal water which are altered by gases rising from sources beneath the caldera floor. Annual recharge to deep aquifers beneath the caldera is probably in the range 2,500 to 6,500 acre-feet. Observations in a Geological Survey drill hole suggest that part of the water may flow to aquifers at depths as much as 1,900 feet beneath the caldera floor. Potential recharge to a postulated geothermal reservoir probably is extremely small. High aeroradioactivity is associated with potassium-rich granitic plutons, muscovite-rich gneisses, schists, and metavolcanic rocks; positive gravity and magnetic anomalies are associated with gabbro plutons; and negative gravity anomalies are associated with granitic plutons. \r\n\r\nAt the west side of the slate belt, the Tillery phyllite is interpreted as having undergone progressive metamorphism. The underlying Uwharrie Formation extends into the Charlotte belt where it is mapped as metavolcanic rocks. Gravity models of the Carolina slate belt indicate that it is a synform containing a wedge of metasedimentary and volcanoclastic rock on plutonic basement. The basement is exposed in the adjacent Charlotte belt antiform. \r\n\r\nThe northern Charlotte belt contains mainly plutonic rocks which have been divided into 3 supergroups of plutons based upon chemistry, mineralogy, texture, and age. They are: \r\n\r\n1. Old Plutonic supergroup - plutons 545-490 m.y. that are medium to coarse-grained tonalite, quartz diorite, and granodiorites. \r\n\r\n2. Concord-Salisbury supergroup -- plutons 426-350 m.y. which form sheet-like intrusions of differentiated gabbro; local volcanic centers with ring complexes 13 km in diameter that suggest magma chambers 0 - 8 km deep; smaller bodies of diorite, monzonite, and syenite; and small Salisbury type granodiorites. \r\n\r\n3. Landis supergroup -- plutons 350-280 m.y. that are usually very coarse-grained, porphyritic, 'big feldspar,' potassium-rich granites. \r\n\r\nThe Mecklenburg-Weddington gabbro complex of the Concord-Salisbury supergroup, the largest feature in the study area, contains three large gabbro plutons. The gabbro intruded old Plutonic complex rocks and could-have produced the metamorphic reaction K-feldspar + sillimanite quartz + muscovite reflected in the mineral assemblage of adjacent felsic metavolcanic rocks. Gravity models indicate a lopolith 3.5- to 4.5-km thick with a 2 km sill extending to the northeast. Positive magnetic and gravity anomalies suggest the lopolith is. connected with the Concord gabbro complex to the northeast. \r\n\r\nThe sheet-like intrusions of Concord-Salisbury group gabbros, forming the core of the composite 5atholith, have medium-grained Salisbury type granodiorite above, and coarser-grained Landis granite below. The position of the supergroups as presently exposed may be a function of level of erosion versus level of emplacement. The plutons in the composite batholith span 200 m.y. according to current age data and are arranged with the oldest at the top and the youngest at the bottom. However, Rb-Sr and K-At ages in the Piedmont are more likely to reflect age of crustal uplift than the age of metamorphism or intrusion. The Charlotte belt composite batholith, therefore, may very well be the result of a shorter single tectonic event or process.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr8393","usgsCitation":"Wilson, F., 1983, Geophysical and geologic studies in southern Mecklenburg County and vicinity, North Carolina and South Carolina: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-93, 199 p.  ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8393.","productDescription":"199 p.  ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":13634,"text":"South Atlantic Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":39562,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0093/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":39561,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0093/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":39563,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0093/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":39564,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0093/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":144993,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0093/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"North Carolina, South Carolina","county":"Mecklenburg County","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -81.19308471679688,\n              34.84762101276787\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.19308471679688,\n              35.74316846139925\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.4144287109375,\n              35.74316846139925\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.4144287109375,\n              34.84762101276787\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.19308471679688,\n              34.84762101276787\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac8e4b07f02db67c208","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wilson, Frederick A.","contributorId":100352,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wilson","given":"Frederick A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163574,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

These modifications, together with land-use practices, led to downcutting, headward erosion, downstream aggradation, accelerated scour, and bank instabilities. Changes in gradient by channel straightening caused more severe channel response than did dredging or clearing. Large-scale changes continue to occur in all the channelized rivers: the Obion River, its forks, and the South Fork Forked Deer River. However, the non-channelized Hatchie River in west Tennessee not only withstood the natural stresses imposed by the wet years of 1973 to 1975 but continues to exhibit characteristics of stability. Water-surface slope, the primary dependent variable, proved to be a sensitive and descriptive parameter useful in determining channel adjustment. Adjustments to man-induced increases in channel-slope are described by inverse exponential functions of the basic form S=ae(-b(t)); where ' S ' is some function describing channel-slope, ' t ' is the number of years since completion of channel work, and ' a ' and ' b ' are coefficients. Response times for the attainment of ' equilibrium ' channel slopes are a function of the magnitude and extent of the imposed modifications. The adjusted profile gradients attained by the streams following channelization are similar to the predisturbed profile gradients, where no alteration to channel length was made. Where the channels were straightened by constructing cut-offs, thus shortening channel length, then slope adjustments (reduction) proceed past the predisturbed profile gradients, to new profiles with lower gradients. This program was initiated to delineate and assess geologic hazards that could be particularly detrimental to major constructions, especially nuclear reactors. Faults are of principal interest to the program because earthquakes associated with them can cause major damage in short periods of time.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Prior to 1970, very little was known about Cenozoic faulting in the eastern United States. the most abundant data were available in the western gulf Coastal Plain where oil exploration had generated a considerable amount of subsurface stratigraphic information. The Atlantic coastal Plain was considered to be generally devoid of faults, although scientists such as McGee (1888) and Darton (1891, 1951) had proposed major faulting or uplift along the Fall Line. The Piedmont and Blue Ridge Provinces of the eastern United States contained numerous mapped faults, abut the recency of fault movement was unknown because of the absence of Cenozoic strata.</p>\n<p>One of the initial efforts of the Reactor Hazards Program was a compilation and evaluation of Cretaceous and younger faults in the East. Topical studies were initiated in areas of particular interest, and these studies in turn generated a broader scientific interest in the problem of Cenozoic deformation. A preliminary literature investigation of Cretaceous and younger faulting was published by York and Oliver (1976), and was followed by an interpretive map of young faults by Howard and others (1978).</p>\n<p>The data in this report represent the presently available knowledge of fault characteristics and distribution. Clearly, as current investigations progress and as geologists become more aware of the evidence for Cenozoic faulting, the number of known Cenozoic faults will increase substantially. Until such time, the data that are shown here must be viewed conservatively because I believe they are not a totally representative collection of information at this scale. the data are useful in characterizing basic fault patterns in the region, but certain factors limit the usefulness of the map. Limitations of this information are discussed in the following text, and the reader should give them major consideration when using the map and fault table.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/mf1269","usgsCitation":"Prowell, D.C., 1983, Index of faults of Cretaceous and Cenozoic age in the eastern United States: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1269, 2 Plates: 33.97 x 47.57 inches and 46.18 x 37.79 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1269.","productDescription":"2 Plates: 33.97 x 47.57 inches and 46.18 x 37.79 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":179879,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1269.PNG"},{"id":327432,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1269/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":327431,"rank":1,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1269/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -73.388671875,\n              45.02695045318546\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.279296875,\n              45.1510532655634\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.9169921875,\n              43.03677585761058\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.9609375,\n              42.42345651793833\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.60937499999999,\n              41.64007838467894\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.9609375,\n              40.91351257612758\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.89453125,\n              40.58058466412764\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.564453125,\n              39.774769485295465\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.0146484375,\n              37.75334401310656\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.498046875,\n              36.24427318493909\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.322265625,\n              34.92197103616377\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.3876953125,\n              34.016241889667015\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.0576171875,\n              32.80574473290688\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.2880859375,\n              31.989441837922904\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.298828125,\n              30.751277776257812\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.6064453125,\n              29.76437737516313\n            ],\n            [\n              -83.232421875,\n              29.38217507514529\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.341796875,\n              29.305561325527698\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.62695312499999,\n              29.305561325527698\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.72558593749999,\n              29.305561325527698\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.12109375,\n              29.267232865200878\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.791015625,\n              29.34387539941801\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.263671875,\n              31.203404950917395\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.12109375,\n              34.161818161230386\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.6708984375,\n              35.31736632923788\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.078125,\n              37.16031654673677\n            ],\n            [\n              -83.408203125,\n              38.89103282648846\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.2880859375,\n              40.51379915504413\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.40917968749999,\n              42.16340342422401\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.95898437499999,\n              43.004647127794435\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.4541015625,\n              44.49650533109348\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.388671875,\n              45.02695045318546\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49fae4b07f02db5f4300","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Prowell, David C.","contributorId":46956,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Prowell","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":264125,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

&nbsp;This data file has been recompiled and updated through 1980. &nbsp;Some revisions of epicenters and intensities in the original file have been made, and intensities have been assigned to earthquakes that previouly had none assigned. &nbsp;Only earthquakes that had epicenters within the boundary of the State are listed in table 2, even though earthquakes that had epicenters in bordering states or countries may have been felt or may have caused damage in the State. &nbsp;Intensity values were updated from data sources that were not available at the time of original compilation. &nbsp;Some epicenters were relocated on the basis of new information. &nbsp;The data shown in table 1 represent best estimates of the epicenter, magnitude, and intensity of each earthquake on the basis of historical and current informaiton. &nbsp;Some of the aftershocks from large earthquakes are listed, but not all, especially for the earthquakes that occurred before seismic instruments were universally used.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1346","usgsCitation":"Reagor, B., Stover, C.W., and
