The study covered a 25-hour period beginning 0900 hours 22 October, 1974. Precipitation during the study period averaged 70 millimeters. Sampling stations were located at Boca de Cangrejos, the main ocean outlet; Canal Pinones between Laguna de Pinones and Laguna La Torrecilla; Canal Suarez between Laguna San Jose, connects to Laguna La Torrecilla; and Cano de Martin Pena between Laguna San Jose and Bahia de San Juan. In addition water-elevation recording gages were installed at each lagoon. \r\n\r\nWater samples from the canal stations were analyzed for organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus species, and suspended sediment. Specific-conductance measurements were used with the chemical data to estimate the runoff contributions of nutrients. \r\n\r\nRunoff into the lagoon, system during the study period was about 2.8 million cubic meters, or about 70 percent of the average precipitation. The runoff contributed chemical loadings to the lagoons of 95,000 kilograms total-organic carbon; 2,700 kilograms of total phosphorus; and 10,000 kilograms of total Khjeldhal nitrogen. A comparison with a prior study during which there was no significant rain, show that dry-period loadings are less than 10 percent of the wet-period loadings. At the end of the study period the system had not reached equilibrium, and the lagoons retained 80 percent of the water inflows from 50 to 90 percent of the chemical loads. Nearly 95 percent of the water outflows occurred at the Boca de Cangrejos sea outlet. The three lagoons and interconnecting canals form a very complex hydraulic system that is difficult to study using traditional techniques. A model of the system will facilitate management to improve the quality of water in the lagoons.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82349","usgsCitation":"Gómez-Gómez, F., and Ellis, S.R., 1983, Hydrologic characteristics of lagoons at San Juan, Puerto Rico, during an October 1974 tidal cycle: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-349, v, 56 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82349.","productDescription":"v, 56 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140931,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0349/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36808,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0349/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a28e4b07f02db611568","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gómez-Gómez, Fernando","contributorId":31366,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gómez-Gómez","given":"Fernando","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159268,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ellis, S. The analyses implemented an approach in which the control for sensitivity testing was a hypothetical aquifer representative of potential injection zones in south Florida, and parameter variations in sensitivity tests represented possible variations in aquifer conditions in the area. The permeability of the aquifer determined whether buoyancy stratification could reduce recovery efficiency. The range of permeability leading to buoyancy stratification became lower as resident fluid salinity increased. Thus, recovery efficiency was optimized by both low permeability and low resident fluid density. High levels of simulated hydrodynamic dispersion led to the lowest estimates of recovery efficiency. Advection by regional flow within the artesian injection zone could significantly affect recovery efficiency, depending upon the storage period, the volume injected, and site-specific hydraulic characteristics. Walter Lake to Easton, Pennsylvania. Rhodamine WT dye was injected at several points for a variety of several common flow conditions and its downstream travel was monitored at a number of downstream points by means of a fluorometer. Time-of-travel data have been related to stream discharge, distance along the river channel and dispersion. If 2.205 pounds of a conservative water soluble contaminant were accidentally spilled into the Lehigh River at Penn Haven Junction at Black Creek 6.09 miles downstream from Rockport, Pennsylvania, when the discharge at Walnutport, Pennsylvania, was 600 cubic feet per second, the leading edge, peak, and trailing edge of the contaminant would arrive 31.6 miles downstream at the Northhampton, Pennsylvania, water intakes 45, 54, and 66 hours later, respectively. The maximum concentration expected at the intakes would be about 1.450 micrograms per liter. From data and relations presented, time-of-travel and maximum concentration estimates can be made for any two points within the reach. There has been no surface outflow since that time. From May 21, 1980, when the first measurement of lake level was made, to August 1, 1982, Spirit Lake has increased its volume from 122,800 acre-ft to 264 ,000 acre-ft, an increase of 115%. Lake level has risen approximately 54 ft during this period. Hydrologic and geologic properties of the debris dam are unknown, but the materials obviously are easily erodible. Steep walled channels up to 60 ft deep have been eroded into the dam and are extending headward toward the lowest points on the crest. In addition, it appears that the lower areas on the crest of the dam are underlain by ash cloud deposits of low density. Indications are that the debris dam could fail by headward erosion, by overtopping with rapid downcutting, or by ' piping ' and rapid erosion. Each type of failure can produce rapid release of stored lake water with very high discharge rates. On the basis of observed filling rates of the lake over the last two yr and precipitation records at four long-term, low altitude National Weather Service stations, it is expected that normal precipitation will fill the lake to the dam crest in December 1985. This estimate is also based on the assumption that loss of water from the lake by seepage continues at the present rate until December 1985. With normal precipitation during the coming yr (August 1982 through July 1983 the lake will fill to a level 50 ft below the lowest existing point on the crest of the debris dam, which is at 3,532 ft altitude. If precipitation exceeds normal by 1.5 times during this coming year, the lake level will be 40 ft below the 3 ,532-ft crest of the debris dam by the end of July 1983. This same lake level can be reached by the end of March 1983 if precipitation from October through March is twice the winter mean. The technical specifications for updating existing USGS land use and land cover maps that are presented here cover both the interpretive aspects of detecting and identifying land use and land cover changes and the cartographic aspects of mapping and presenting the change data in conventional map format. They provide the map compiler with the procedures and techniques necessary to then use these change data to update existing land use and land cover maps in a manner that is both standardized and repeatable. Included are specifications for the acquisition of remotely sensed source materials, selection of compilation map bases, handling of data base corrections, editing and quality control operations, generation of map update products for USGS open file, and the reproduction and distribution of open file materials. These specifications are planned to become part of the National Mapping Division's Technical Instructions.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83116","usgsCitation":"Milazzo, V.A., 1983, Specifications for updating USGS land use and land cover maps: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-116, iii, 65 p. ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83116.","productDescription":"iii, 65 p. ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143654,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0116/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38174,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0116/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e4e4b07f02db5e5e03","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Milazzo, Valerie A.","contributorId":88717,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Milazzo","given":"Valerie","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161197,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

These constituents (as well as dissolved solids, hardness, and magnesium) each correlate well with specific conductance, whereas chloride, sodium, and nitrate each do not. Specific conductance ranges from 73 to 820 micromhos per centimeter throughout the study area. Short-term variations in water quality in the Spokane aquifer are generally greater than long-term variations. \r\n\r\nVertical variations in concentration of chemical constituents occurred in four of 15 wells used to sample the upper 50 feet of the aquifer along several cross sections. Changes in water quality from one cross section to another could not be directly related to land-use activities. \r\n\r\nA digital model was developed and used to simulate solute transport of conservative ions in the Spokane aquifer. Specifically, the model was used to estimate the impact of the chloride ion from recharge through septic tanks and from irrigation on the water quality of the aquifer. Analysis shows that the estimated impact on the aquifer from these two source loadings was less than a 1-milligram-per-liter increase throughout approximately 80 percent of the aquifer, but increases averaging about 3 milligrams per liter occurred in some peripheral areas. Various water-quality-management schemes based on manmade or natural stresses can be tested with the model.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82769","usgsCitation":"Vaccaro, J.J., and Bolke, E., 1983, Evaluation of water-quality characteristics of part of the Spokane Aquifer, Washington and Idaho, using a solute-transport digital model: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-769, vi, 75 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82769.","productDescription":"vi, 75 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":145736,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0769/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39368,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0769/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f7e4b07f02db5f1cce","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Vaccaro, J. The districts occur in structurally complex settings associated with silicic to intermediate volcanics. Affiliation with subduction environments on a continental scale and caldera settings on a regional scale is common but is not demonstrable for all districts. Most deposits formed near the end of major volcanism, but some formed considerably later. Paleodepth to the top of the ore is 300-600m for most districts, although Au-rich districts appear to be shallower. The lateral extent of the ore zone is highly variable and far exceeds the limited vertical range (300-800m). Most ore was deposited from dominantly meteoric fluids ranging in temperature from 220&deg;-290&deg;C. Salinities ranged from 0-13 wt% NaCl equiv., and typical values were 1-3 wt%. Although noted for eight deposits, boiling is clearly associated with precious-metal deposition in only two deposits. Four districts, typified by Goldfield, Nev., are characterized by a highly sulfidized mineral assemblage, advanced argillic alteration, and ore deposition closely following emplacement of the host rock. The remaining eleven districts highlight a second, discrete type of deposit. They contain adularia, exhibit sericitic &plusmn; argillic alteration, and were mineralized significantly after emplacement of the host rock. The latter category includes two subgroups: Ag- and base-metal-rich deposits (e.g., Creede, Colo.), and Au-rich, base-metal-poor deposits (e.g., Round Mtn., Nev.).</p>","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83710","usgsCitation":"Heald-Wetlaufer, P., Hayba, D.O., Foley, N.K., and Goss, J., 1983, Comparative anatomy These samples are from the Stark Shale Member of the Dennis Limestone of Upper Pennsylvanian age, Wabaunsee County, Kansas. The data confirm previous results (Hosterman and Whitlow, 1981) which showed that a limited relationship of color value to organic carbon exists for shales containing about 7 percent or less organic carbon. For samples with 7 percent or more organic carbon, color values are nearly all the same. The color value is useful in screening samples before trace element analysis and in estimating the organic carbon content and metal potential of the shale (Leventhal and others, 1982).","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83315","usgsCitation":"Stanton, M., Leventhal, J.S., and Hatch, J.R., 1983, Short-range vertical variation in organic carbon, carbonate carbon, total sulfur contents and Munsell color values in a core from the Upper Pennsylvanian Stark Shale Member of the Dennis Limestone, Wabaunsee County, Kansas: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-315, 10 p. ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83315.","productDescription":"10 p. ill. ;28 cm.","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143471,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0315/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39108,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0315/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f7e4b07f02db5f1dfb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stanton, M.R.","contributorId":103684,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stanton","given":"M.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162904,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Leventhal, Joel S.","contributorId":36529,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Leventhal","given":"Joel","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162903,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Hatch, Joseph R. 0000-0001-9257-0278 jrhatch@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9257-0278","contributorId":722,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hatch","given":"Joseph","email":"jrhatch@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":164,"text":"Central Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":162902,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

In one segment, kettle lakes were found to be closely associated with the ground-water system. In the other four segments, a close relationship was found between streamflow and ground water. It was concluded that additional ground-water development would adversely affect lake levels and streamflow, thereby reducing surface-water resources already closed to further appropriation. The technique is a method of electromagnetic sounding of the Earth and is based upon the skin depth effect in conductive media. The electric and magnetic fields arising from natural sources are measured at the surface of the earth over broad frequency bands. An excellent review of the technique is provided in the paper by Vozoff (1972). The sources of the natural fields are found in two basic mechanisms. At frequencies above a few hertz, most of the energy arises from lightning in thunderstorm belts around the equatorial regions. This energy is propagated in a wave-guide formed by the earthionospheric cavity. Energy levels are higher at fundamental modes for this cavity, but sufficient energy exists over most of the audio range to be useful for sounding at these frequencies, in which case the technique is generally referred to as audio-magnetotellurics or AMT. At frequencies lower than audio, and in general below 1 Hz, the source of naturally occuring electromagnetic energy is found in ionospheric currents. Current systems flowing in the ionosphere generate EM waves which can be used in sounding of the earth. These fields generate a relatively complete spectrum of electromagnetic energy that extends from around 1 Hz to periods of one day. Figure 1 shows an amplitude spectrum characteristic of both the ionospheric and lightning sources, covering a frequency range from 0.0001 Hz to 1000 Hz. It can be seen that there is a minimum in signal levels that occurs at about 1 Hz, in the gap between the two sources, and that signal level increases with a decrease in frequency.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr8385","usgsCitation":"Stanley, W., and Tinkler, R.D., 1983, A practical, low-noise coil system for magnetotellurics: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-85, 36 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8385.","productDescription":"36 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":39103,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0085/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142460,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0085/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1fe4b07f02db6ab5fd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stanley, William D.","contributorId":23274,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stanley","given":"William D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162900,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Tinkler, Richard D.","contributorId":30628,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tinkler","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162899,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
