The data collection was part of a study to determine the effectiveness of agricultural best-management practices designed to improve rural water quality. The study is part of a Rural Clean Water Program demonstration project undertaken by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Continuous streamflow data were collected at three gaging stations during March through September 1982. Suspended-sediment samples were collected at two of the gaging stations. Samples were collected manually at weekly intervals. During periods of rapidly changing stage, samples were collected at 30-minute to 12-hour intervals by stage-activated automatic samplers. The samples were analyzed for suspendedsediment concentration and particle-size distribution. Particlesize distributions were also determined for one set of bedmaterial samples collected at each sediment-sampling site. The streamflow and suspended-sediment-concentration data were used to compute records of mean-daily flow, mean-daily suspended-sediment concentration, and daily suspended-sediment discharge. The daily records are documented and results of analyses for particle-size distribution and of vertical sampling in the stream cross sections are given.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"St. Paul, MN","doi":"10.3133/ofr83212","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency","usgsCitation":"Payne, G.A., 1983, Streamflow and suspended-sediment transport in Garvin Brook, Winona County, southeastern Minnesota: Hydrologic data for 1982: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-212, iii, 22 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83212.","productDescription":"iii, 22 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":392,"text":"Minnesota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":144040,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0212/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38465,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0212/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Minnesota","county":"Winona County","otherGeospatial":"Garvin Brook","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -92.16567993164062,\n              43.8533454775848\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.16567993164062,\n              44.224536189912925\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.61773681640625,\n              44.224536189912925\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.61773681640625,\n              43.8533454775848\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.16567993164062,\n              43.8533454775848\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a4eee","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Payne, G. Hydration-rind thickness data give good estimates of relative age differences between the domes, but determination of absolute ages will depend upon calibration to radiometric ages. \r\n\r\nThe first extrusion of highly differentiated, sparsely porphyritic rhyolite occurred an estimated 32,000 to 40,000 yrs ago and consists of a small dome at the northwest end of the contiguous chain. The next major extrusive event occurred about 24,000 yrs ago and is represented by two domes and a major tephra. About 10,000 yrs ago the frequency of eruptive activity increases and rhyolite lave was extruded at an average rate of 0.2 km3/1000 yrs; periods of dormancy ranging in length from 300 to 2000 yrs. About 2000 to 3000 yrs ago the rate of extrusion increased dramatically to 0.8 km3/1000 yrs beginning with the eruption of the South Coulee and its associated tephra. At the same time, the nature of erupted magma changed from sparsely porphyritic (3 to 10 per cent sanidine) to aphyric rhyolite. All eruptions since 2000 radiocarbon yrs BP have produced magma that is aphyric but is of the same chemical composition as the earlier porphyritic magma. Volumes of porphyritic and aphyric extrusives, each of which includes volumes of lava and volumes of pumiceous pyroclastics reduced for porosity, are nearly equal and together total about 4 km3. Projecting the recent rate of extrusion over the time since the last major eruption, 1185 radiocarbon yrs ago suggests that a future eruption in the Mono Chain could release as much as 1 km 3 of magma. The recent increase in extrusion rate and the contemporaneous change in the nature of the magma are attributed to an event in the magma chamber that allowed the release of hotter, more fluid, crystal-free magma. The young age for the beginning of rhyolite volcanism from the mono magma chamber suggests that rhyolite magma may have been emplaced in the shallow crust as recently as 32,000 to 40,000 yrs ago. Calculations by Lachenbruch et al. (1976, Jour. Geophys. Research, v. 81, p. 769-784) that a thermal disturbance at this age would have propagated upward by solid conduction only 4 km and offer an explanation for the lack of a heat-flow anomaly and surface indications of hydrothermal activity over the Mono magma chamber and its associated ring-fracture system. This report also contains new information on the age and chemistry of volcanics on the Mono Lake island, the Inyo domes, and tephras within the Long Valley Caldera. \r\n\r\nA newly discovered rhyolite tuff ring of late Quaternary age in the Toowa volcanic field of the southern Sierra Nevada is briefly described for it represents a new area that should be examined for potential as a geothermal area.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr83747","usgsCitation":"Wood, S.H., 1983, Chronology of late Pleistocene and Holocene volcanics, Long Valley and Mono Basin geothermal areas, eastern California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-747, vii, 76 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83747.","productDescription":"vii, 76 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":407293,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_14207.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":143964,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0747/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39615,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0747/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Long Valley and Mono Basin geothermal area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -119.129,\n              37.681\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.922,\n              37.681\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.922,\n              38.046\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.129,\n              38.046\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.129,\n              37.681\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49dbe4b07f02db5e073f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wood, S. High-grade ore samples also contain diagenetic clausthalite. Microprobe and SEM/EDS study indicate high U concentrations along the contacts of organic matter and surrounding detrital grains. The cores of the organic matter which fill pore spaces are commonly very low in U, as well as Si, Al, V, and Fe. Petrographic relationships as well as the chemistry and U distribution of the titanomagnetite grains and organic matter imply that the U was introduced to the sediments after the organic matter was emplaced and before the sediments were compacted.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr838","usgsCitation":"Webster, J., 1983, Petrography of some Ambrosia Lake, New Mexico prefault uranium ores, and implications for their genesis: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-8, ii, 75 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr838.","productDescription":"ii, 75 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":146099,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0008/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39463,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0008/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae0e4b07f02db687eba","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Webster, James D.","contributorId":100859,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Webster","given":"James D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163427,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Large in 1979 and 1980 has been redesigned to permit its use in a computer-assisted search for exploration-target areas in Devonian rocks of the Appalachian region using attribute-coincidence mapping (ACM). Some 36 gridded-data maps and selected maps derived therefrom were developed to show the orthogonal patterns, using the 7-1/2 minute quadrangle as an information cell, of geologic data patterns relevant to the empirical model. From these map and data files, six attribute-coincidence maps were prepared to illustrate both variation in the application of ACM techniques and the extent of possible significant exploration-target areas. As a result of this preliminary work in ACM, four major (and some lesser) exploration-target areas needing further study and analysis have been defined as follows: 1) in western and central New York in the outcrop area of lowermost Upper Devonian rocks straddling the Clarendon-Linden fault; 2) in western Virginia and eastern West Virginia in an area largely coincident with the well-known 'Oriskany' Mn-Fe ores; 3) an area in West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia along and nearby the trend of the Alabama-New York lineament of King and Zietz approximately between 38- and 40-degrees N. latitude; and 4) an area in northeastern Ohio overlying an area coincident with a significant thickness of Silurian salt and high modern seismic activity. Some lesser, smaller areas suggested by relatively high coincidence may also be worthy of further study.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83352","usgsCitation":"Wedow, H., 1983, A search for stratiform massive-sulfide exploration targets in Appalachian Devonian rocks; a case study using computer-assisted attribute-coincidence mapping: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-352, 84 p. maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83352.","productDescription":"84 p. maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":146100,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0352/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39464,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0352/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b18e4b07f02db6a7031","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wedow, Helmuth","contributorId":67495,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wedow","given":"Helmuth","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163428,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

A large cone of depression with a maximum depth of 200 feet below NGVD of 1929 was identified near Kingsville. This cone of depression affects most of Kleburg County and parts of other counties.
\n
Specific conductance, indicating the salinity of collected water samples, ranged from 940 micromhos per centimeter to 6,900 micromhos per centimeter. Minimum, median, and maximum concentrations and percentage of samples above the ' maximum contaminant levels ' established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are presented for all wells in the statewide network. More detailed areal statistical summaries are presented for all wells in the statewide network. More detailed areal statistical summaries are presented for nine chemical constituents for which more than 3% of the observed concentrations exceeded the ' maximum contaminate level ' for that constituent. The State was divided into 14 ground-water regions based on water-use and physiographic characteristics. Summaries for these nine constituents include quartile values and percentage of samples with concentrations above the ' maximum contaminant level ' for each ground-water region. Accompanying figures show median concentrations and percentages of concentrations exceeding the ' maximum contaminant levels ' established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for each ground-water region. These studies are now in progress in Austin and Houston. Studies were completed in the Fort Worth metropolitan area at the end of the 1977 water year, and in the Dallas metropolitan area at the end of the 1979 water year. The study in the San Antonio area was completed at the end of the 1981 water year.

The Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Texas Department of Water Resources, expanded the existing streamflow network in the San Antonio metropolitan area in May 1968 to begin urban hydrology studies in this area. In September 1968, the program was further expanded to include the collection of water-quality data. The Texas Department of Water Resources ended its participation in the project in 1979, and the city of San Antonio funded the program through the 1981 water year.

The operation and maintenance of stations 08178000, San Antonio River at San Antonio; 08178700, Salado Creek (upper station) at San Antonio; and 08178800, Salado Creek (lower station) at San Antonio are funded by the city of San Antonio and the U.S Geological Survey.

The operation and maintenance and collection of water-quality data at station 08178720, Lorence Creek at Thousand Oaks Blvd., San Antonio, station 08178640, West Elm Creek at San Antonio, and station 08178645, East Elm Creek at San Antonio, are funded by the Edwards Underground Water District in cooperation with the Texas Department of Hater Resources and the U.S. Geological Survey. Station 08178640, West Elm Creek at San Antonio, and station 08178645, East Elm Creek at San Antonio will provide hydrologic data on similar and adjacent watersheds. The West Elm watershed is still predominately rural but is undergoing extensive urbanization in some areas. The East Elm watershed is relatively stable and undeveloped.

The objectives of the San Antonio urban hydrology study are:

To provide data showing the effects of various stages of urbanization on flood discharge and runoff.

To provide water-quality data on surface-water runoff from floods of various magnitudes, during all seasons of the year from areas with different types of urban development.

Annual publication of the San Antonio urban studies was initiated in 1969.

A definition of terms related to streamflow, water quality, and other hydrologic data, as used in this report, are defined in the U.S. Geological Survey's 1979 and 1980 \"Water resources data for Texas\" reports.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr8335","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Texas Department of Water Resources","usgsCitation":"Perez, R., 1983, Hydrologic data for urban studies in the San Antonio, Texas, metropolitan area, 1981: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-35, v, 58 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8335.","productDescription":"v, 58 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":38476,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0035/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"1.18 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"},{"id":144085,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0035/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","city":"San Antonio","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -98.8165283203125,\n              29.123373210819224\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.19580078125,\n              29.123373210819224\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.19580078125,\n              29.699982298744377\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.8165283203125,\n              29.699982298744377\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.8165283203125,\n              29.123373210819224\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a1be4b07f02db6078df","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Perez, Roberto","contributorId":97114,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Perez","given":"Roberto","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161728,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
