This report summarizes the amounts and distribution of the pumpage of ground water for public supplies from four aquifers in Wisconsin. The data are for 1979 and reflect the pumpage from about 1,100 wells in 485 communities. The distribution and amount of pumpage is estimated to be similar for subsequent years.
\nOf the water pumped for public supplies, 95 percent comes from two major aquifers--the sand-and-gravel and the sandstone aquifers. Lesser amounts of water come from the Silurian dolomite, which is present onlyl in a narrow band in eastern Wisconsin, and from the generally low-yielding Precambrian basement rock that underlies the entire state.

The area varies in altitude from less than 4,000 to more than 10,000 feet, and is comprised chiefly of plateaus, benches, and terraces that are dissected by deep, narrow canyons. Principal streams draining the area are the Virgin, Sevier, Escalante, and Paria Rivers, and Coal, Kanab, and Wahweap Creeks.
Most of the data included in this report were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey from October 1980 to September 1982. They were collected as part of a hydrologic study in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to evaluate potential impacts of coal mining on the area's water resources. The results of that study are to be published in a separate report.
Several earlier coal-related hydrologic studies have been made in the Alton and Kolob coal-fields area. Hydrologic data collected during those studies may be found in the following reports: Goode (1964, 1966), Sandberg (1979), and Cordova (1981). Data collected at the streamflow-gaging stations shown on plate 1 are published separately in annual reports of the U.S. Geological Survey. Information about the availability of these data is given in table 8.

The stable dunes are large and support a sparse semidesert vegetation. Active dunes are small and commonly confined to the crests of stable dunes; they comprise less than 5 percent of the dunes in the sand seas. Both the stability of the major dune systems and the small percentage of active dunes in the modern environment indicate a significant decrease in the average velocity and frequency of sand-moving winds since the time of stable-dune deposition. Comparison of modern wind directions with dune trends indicates that southwesterly winds responsible for dune formation in the southern and western An Nafud sand sea and in Nafud Urayq are no longer prevailing winds. \r\n\r\nLake deposits are locally interbedded with deposits of eolian sand and in the lee of stable dunes. Radiocarbon dating of calcareous lake deposits defines at least two episodes of moisture-effective climate and minimal eolianactivity: between about 32,000 and 24,000 B.P., just before the onset of the last worldwide glacial stade of the Pleistocene, and during the Holocene between about 8,500 and 5,000 B.P. One lake deposit is more than 38,000 years old and may have been deposited during an earlier pluvial episode about 85,000 to 70,000 B.P. Pollen extracted from these lake deposits indicates that vegetation during late Pleistocene and Holocene pluvial episodes was similar to the present semidesert vegetation; however, the density of shrubs and grasses on the dunes was greater. \r\n\r\nThe main dune systems overlie the 32,000 to 24,000-yearold lake deposits, whereas the Holocene lakebeds are found in modern interdunal environments, usually at the base of stable dunes. The main dune systems probably formed between 24,000 and 8,500 B.P., during the last episode of worldwide cold temperatures. Increased windiness at this time is also recorded in the world's oceans and in both polar ice caps.\r\n\r\nEolian sand below the older lake deposits was deposited before 32,000 B.P., and circumstantial evidence indicates that the sand seas may have begun to form as early as late Miocene. In the An Nafud, remnants of a middle Tertiary(?) surface suggest that the original sediment source for the An Nafud may have been the weathered sandstones that underlie this surface. \r\n\r\nAfter lacustrine deposition ceased in middle Holocene time, eolian activity increased slightly. Deflation on windward dune slopes has produced deflation scoops, which look like inverted deltas. The data for each station consist of scalar electromagnetic measurements at descrete frequencies for two-orthogonal magnetic and electric field pairs. Observations spaced about 5-km apart indicate resistivities in the range of 100-700 ohm-m for the unweathered Tertiary volcanic rocks to a depth of 200 to 500 m. Beneath this zone the data indicate resistivities in the range of 10-100 ohm-m that suggest the existence of an older volcanic rock unit. The less resistive unit appears to be displaced upward beneath Turtle Mountain, an area bounded to the northeast and southwest by mapped Basin and Range faults, and bounded to the southeast by an unmapped fault of older origin that trends northeast. Lateral changes in the resistivity of the two main geoelectric layers result in lowered resistivity in an area of known hot-springs near the confluence of the Gila and San Francisco Rivers, as well as along a north-south trending zone located on the east flank of Turtle Mountain, about 5-km (3-mi) west-northwest of the hot springs. Sedimentation in the seaway was controlled by uplift in source areas to the west, subsidence in the basin, and eustatic sea level changes. Sedimentation rates were relatively high, averaging about 220m/million years; marine cycles of deposition occurred in northwestern Colorado that correspond to the Claggett, Judith River, and Bearpaw regressions of Montana. \r\n\r\nThe upper Mancos shale and lower Iles Formation can be subdivided into ten facies based on five criteria: (1) Lithology, texture, and thickness relations (geometry); (2) sedimentary structures and contacts; (3) trace and body fossils; (4) paleocurrent data; and (5) adjoining facies (underlying, overlying, and laterally). Each facies has distinct attributes which characterize a specific depositional environment. Environments represented by facies include (A) offshore shoreface transition (prodelta); (B) shallow marine sand bars; (C) destructional delta front; (D) constructional delta front (sheet sands and mouth bars); (E) beach foreshore-shoreface deposits; (F) interdistributary marsh and swamp deposits and fluvial floodplain; (G) distributary channels; (H) crevasse splays; (J) fluvial streams; and (K) tidally influenced distributary channel. \r\n\r\nFacies analysis of outcrop data shows that transgressions and regressions occurred, some of which are related to major (eustatic) sea level changes and others that reflect only local causes. Helium concentrations in 510 samples ranged from -147 to 441 ppb He with respect to ambient air. The median helium value for the study area was 36 ppb. Concentrations of more than 100 ppb He, and less than -20 ppb He, occur more commonly in the Ely Quadrangle and are especially numerous in the western one-half of this quadrangle. Primary activities include the systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of hydrologic data, evaluation of water demands, and water-resources research. Hydrologic investigations are conducted through four basic types of projects: (1) data-collection programs, (2) local or areal investigations, (3) statewide or regional investigations, and (4) research projects. These projects are funded through cooperative agreements with State and local agencies, transfer of funds from other Federal agencies, and direct Federal funds. Forty-two water-related projects were funded during fiscal years 1981 and 1982 in Kansas. This report describes for each of these water-resources investigations the problem that initiated the study, the objectives of the project, and the approach designed to achieve this objective. Information on data-collection stations in Kansas is presented in maps and tables. A list of reports approved for publication by the U.S. Geological Survey, its cooperators, or technical and scientific organizations during fiscal years 1981 and 1982 is also provided. These data were collected at 85 sites in 19 counties during October 1979 and at 21 of the 85 sites in 12 of the 19 counties monthly from January through September 1980. The samples were collected during steady flow. Samples were also collected at 8 of the 21 monthly sites during unsteady flow caused by storms. Samples were collected prestorm; on the rising, peak, and falling stream stages; and poststorm, after flow had stabilized.
\nWater samples were collected at each site for determining concentrations of major ions, selected metals, nutrients, and suspended sediment. Specific conductance, pH, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, and instantaneous discharge were also determined at each site. During October 1979, streambed-material samples were collected at 74 sites for determining concentrations of acid-soluble constituents on sediment smaller than 63-micron diameter. During March 1980, streambed-material samples were collected at 14 sites for determining the quantity of coal in streambed sediments.

Principal purposes of the program are to provide a means for participating water laboratories to: (1) identify analytical problem areas; (2) ascertain the accuracy and precision of common water analyses and analytical methods and; (3) provide reference samples for continuing quality assurance testing. Participation in this continuing quality assurance program is mandatory for all domestic laboratories providing water analysis data for Survey use. Analytical data submitted by the participating laboratories that analyzed the respective reference samples distributed in October 1982 are presented. Relative performance ratings achieved by the laboratories for each determination and statistical evaluation of the data are given in 14 tables. Investigation of the coastal plain of southwestern Saudi Arabia suggests that the rift valley was filled with basaltic and felsic to rhyolitic volcanic rocks (Ad Darb and Damad formations), cherty tuffaceous siltstones (Baid formation), and subordinate Nubian-type quartz sandstone (Ayyanah sandstone) between about 30 and 20 Ma ago. These rocks are named herein the Jizan group. At the same time, alkali-olivine basalt was erupted on the stable Precambrian craton at locations 100 to 200 km east of the rift valley axis.
\nFirst-stage spreading of the Red Sea began about 20 Ma ago when diabasic dikes and gabbro and granophyre plutons (Tihamat Asir complex) of oceanic-tholeiitic parentage were intruded into the continental-rift deposits. The new oceanic crust was injected into a region of thinned continental crust. Because of thinning, the continental crust was extended and became fractured into a series of fault blocks. Crustal extension in the attenuated zone was accompanied by mafic and silicic volcanism producing a continental rift-valley tectonic environment. Fault blocks of the rift valley were initially rotated toward the Red Sea during the first-stage spreading episode. Inland from the continental rift, the thick continental crust was distended on long parallel fractures that were intruded by gabbroic to quartz syenitic magma to form continental dikes. This period of continental-margin extension was short lived, lasting perhaps only 1 or 2 Ma. The first-stage sea-floor spreading of the Red Sea continued until about 15 or 14 Ma ago at a half-spreading rate of about 2.2 cm/yr.
\nThroughout early Tertiary time, the Arabian Shield erosion surface remained near sea level. First-stage uplift of the Red Sea Escarpment began during middle Miocene time, as evidenced by the coarse polymictic boulder conglomerate of the Bathan formation. Second-stage scarp uplift and second-stage sea-floor spreading followed during Pliocene, Pleistocene, and Holocene time.

In the study area 23,700 acre-feet of ground water from the basin-fill deposits was used to irrigate more than 5,000 acres in 1981. Surface water is not a reliable source for irrigation or public supply. Ground water enters the area as underflow from the north and east and as recharge from the mountains, moves through basin-margin sediments, around the basin-center clays, and exits the area to the west beneath the Rio Sonoyta. Ground-water withdrawals in the upper Rio Sonoyta area do not appear to have an effect on water levels in the Papago Farms-Great Plain area. Depth to water ranges from 500 feet near the southern boundary to 150 feet in the center of study area. About 10 million acre-feet of recoverable ground water is stored in the upper 400 feet of the aquifer. Storage is being depleted at a rate of 19,000 acre-feet per year. The ground water is a sodium and bicarbonate type and has an anomalously high content of arsenic and fluoride. (USGS)
