Stream-sampling sites were upstream and downstream from potential, existing, or historical coal-mining areas. Field water-quality measurements of water temperature, specific conductance, pH, and dissolved oxygen were also made to aid in assessing stream water-quality conditions. The purpose of the study was to describe and quantify the benthic invertebrate communities in selected streams in coal-mining areas. Sampling was conducted on a near bimonthly basis throughout the growing season, beginning in April and May 1980, and continuing through September 1981. One of the species is larger than any species identified from the Early Tertiary of Africa. Its lower teeth are from 60 to 100 percent wider and 50 percent longer than those in P. mokattamensis, hitherto the largest species known from Africa. The second species, the most poorly represented of the three, is in dental size roughly 40 percent as large as the first species or about the same size as P. variabilis of Africa. Cumulative production is 445 BBO and annual production is 20 BBO. Demonstrated Reserves of crude-oil have declined over the past 10 years consistent with discoveries lagging production over the same period. The assessment of Undiscovered Resources shows a 90 percent probability that the amount discoverable lies between 321 and 1,417 BBO, 550 BBO being the most likely value. The most likely value for Ultimate recoverable resources is 1,718 BBO. The distribution of Ultimate Resources of crude oil will remain highly skewed toward the Middle East; no frontier areas that have potentials large enough to significantly affect present distribution are recognized. Rates of discovery have continued to decline over the past 20 years even though exploration activity has increased in recent years. Prudence dictates, therefore, that the low side of the assessment of Undiscovered Resources be responsibly considered and that alternate energy sources be a part of future planning. \r\n\r\nExtra-heavy oil and bitumen are assessed separately, with Reserves being figured as the annual productive capacity of installed facilities times 25 years. Strip mining disrupts the aquifers and could significantly impact the local hydrology, imposing hardships on local residents. This comprehensive water-resources study of a 147-square-mile coal area in west-central North Dakota was done to facilitate sound management decisions regarding the suitability of the site for mining. </p><p>Two strippable lignite beds, identified as the D and E beds, in the lower 250 to 300 feet of the Sentinel Butte Member of the Fort Union Formation underlie much of two small stream basins. The lignites and two closely associated sand deposits are the only consistently occurring aquifers within several hundred feet of the land surface. </p><p>The D lignite bed underlies nearly the entire study area, but is not water bearing where it is structurally uplifted beneath upland areas. It is, for the most part, marginally confined. The E lignite bed overlies the D bed and is extensively eroded along North Creek in the southern part of the study area. The E bed is either unsaturated or unconfined in most of its area of occurrence. Direction of ground-water flow in both lignite aquifers is largely controlled by topography. </p><p>Interconnected sand beds deposited as channel fill in braided streams form aquifers between the E and D beds (E-D aquifer) and below the D bed (D-HT aquifer). Both aquifers underlie the central part of the study area and each consists of as much as 100 feet of predominantly fine to medium silty unconsolidated sand. Maximum depth to the top of the aquifers was 200 feet for the E-D aquifer and 320 feet for the D-HT aquifer. The E-D aquifer, where near land surface, is unconfined, whereas the D-HT aquifer is entirely confined. Direction of ground-water flow in the D-HT aquifer is not influenced by the local topography as in the three overlying aquifers.</p><p>Aquifers also occur at much greater depth beneath the study area in strata of Late Cretaceous and early Tertiary age. The Fox Hills and Tongue River aquifers are most commonly utilized and lie at depths of about 1,700 and 750 feet, respectively. </p><p>Water in all aquifers beneath the study area is a sodium bicarbonate or sodium sulfate type. Mean dissolved solids in the four aquifers in the Sentinel Butte Member ranged from 1,290 to 1,970 milligrams per liter- Most of the samples were soft water, had low dissolved iron concentration, and were slightly to moderately colored (tan to brown) by dissolved organics.&nbsp;Several samples from the four aquifers had a perceptible hydrogen sulfide odor.</p><p>North Creek and an unnamed tributary of the Green River drain most of the study area. North Creek flows intermittently during most years, while the Green River tributary flows perennially and has base flow of about 0.2 cubic foot per second. North Creek has predominately a sodium sulfate type water and the Green River tributary has a sodium bicarbonate-sulfate type water. At high flows, the dissolved solids generally are less than 1,000 milligrams per liter, and the water contains greater percentages of calcium and magnesium than at low flow.</p><p>The impacts of strip mining on the shallow ground-water flow system would be very localized due to the already low water levels and the segmented nature of the flow system. Similarly, water-quality impacts on the ground-water system would be localized. Natural geochemical processes are effective in limiting the severity and lateral spread of chemically enriched waters. </p><p>Streamflow magnitudes should not be significantly affected by mining activities. Stream quality impacts should be readily manageable by ordinary routing, impoundment, and treatment techniques. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri834228","usgsCitation":"Horak, W., 1983, Water resources of the Rattlesnake Butte area, a site of potential lignite mining in west-central North Dakota: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 83-4228, Report: vi, 53 p. 2 Plates: 23.74 x 12.80 inches and 21.90 x 14.80 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri834228.","productDescription":"Report: vi, 53 p. 2 Plates: 23.74 x 12.80 inches and 21.90 x 14.80 inches","costCenters":[{"id":478,"text":"North Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":34685,"text":"Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":56605,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4228/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":56606,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4228/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":56607,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4228/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":123563,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4228/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f4e4b07f02db5f03d1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Horak, W.F.","contributorId":82326,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Horak","given":"W.F.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":198649,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Drill hole data provided by the Arkansas Geological Commission is used in the synthesis and interpretation. Areas containing lignite of potential resource value are also delineated. \r\n\r\nTo illustrate the regional stratigraphic framework of Crowleys Ridge, a cross section was constructed from logs of selected oil and gas test wells, along or adjacent to the north-south trending ridge over a distance of about 115 miles. This section reveals that lignite-bearing Tertiary formations dip gently southward along the ridge. The Paleocene-Eocene Wilcox Group forms the bedrock in the northern part of the ridge and successively younger bedrock of the Eocene Claiborne and Jackson Groups is identified in the central and southern part of the ridge. Crowleys Ridge is mantled with alluvium and loess of Quaternary age, and sand and gravel beds of the Lafayette Formation of Pliocene (?) age that unconformably overlie the Paleocene and Eocene rocks. The thickness of lignite-bearing sedimentary deposits ranges from 830 feet in the north to 2,480 feet in the south. The Wilcox, Claiborne, and Jackson Groups of Paleocene and Eocene age are believed to be fluvial-deltaic in origin. \r\n\r\nThe detailed vertical and horizontal stratigraphic characteristics and distribution of lignite beds in the sediments were determined by constructing seven cross sections from lithologic and geophysical logs of the lignite investigations on Crowleys Ridge by the Arkansas Geological Commission and private companies. Correlation and interpretation of the lignite-bearing strata reveal ten lignite beds of resource potential. These lignite beds range from a few inches to 9.5 ft in thickness and are assigned to stratigraphic intervals that are designated as zone 1 through 7. Zone 1 is near the middle of the Wilcox Group and zone 7 is near the middle of the overlying Claiborne Group. Some of these lignite beds are correlated over distances as much as 30 miles. Other lignite beds thin to a few inches thick and disappear within short distances. Four areas are delineated on Crowleys Ridge that contain one or more lignite beds each 2.5 feet or more thick. Strippable lignite is limited to 300 feet in this area, therefore, all holes were drilled to 300 feet or less. \r\n\r\nChemical analyses of eight lignite samples from Crowleys Ridge are on record with the U.S. Geological Survey's National Coal Resources Data System. Two of the samples are from the Wilcox Group, and six are from the Claiborne Group, but the lignite beds from which the samples were taken are unidentified. However, the analyses are believed to be representative of the lignite within the lignite-bearing sequence. The two Wilcox samples had moisture values of 36.3 and 40.1 percent; ash, 30.5 and 20.5 percent (U.S. Bureau of Mines); sulfur content, 0.3 and 1.0 percent; and Btu values, 3,910 and 4,590 on an as received basis. The six Claiborne samples had moisture values ranging from 34.7 to 43.7 percent; ash from 11.9-28.2 percent (USBM); sulfur content, 0.3-3 percent; and Btu values, 3,400 to 5,160. \r\n\r\nU.S. Geological Survey average ash content for the eight samples was 36.22 percent, and the major oxides are SiO2 (60.75 percent), Al2O3 (15.23 percent), CaO (6.96 percent), Fe2O3 (6.65 percent), and SO3 (5.64 percent). No anomalous values were recorded for the trace element content. \r\n\r\nLignite is not currently mined on Crowleys Ridge. It has potential for use as a fuel for direct firing of boilers to generate electricity. It also has potential for gasification to produce pipeline gas, and for liquefaction to produce fuel oil. More drilling and analyses are needed to better define the quantity and quality of lignite beds within the four significant areas with resource potential and to determine the extent of lignite beds 2.5 ft or more thick that occur in several isolated areas.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83609","usgsCitation":"Meissner, C., 1983, Stratigraphic framework and distribution of lignite on Crowleys Ridge, Arkansas: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-609, 33 p., 9 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83609.","productDescription":"33 p., 9 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144091,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38149,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38150,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38151,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38152,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38153,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38154,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38155,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-7.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38156,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-8.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38157,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-9.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38158,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b25e4b07f02db6af76b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Meissner, Charles R.","contributorId":27863,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Meissner","given":"Charles R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161161,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The glacial aquifers, outwash deposits confined by as much as 275 feet of glacial till, are the Floyd, Plum Creek, Ethan, Warren, and Alexandria. The bedrock aquifers are the Niobrara, Codell, Dakota, and Sioux Quartzite Wash, and may be as much as 80, 350, 700, and 500 feet below land surface, respectively. The glacial aquifers averaged 13 to 40 feet in thickness and contain about 670,000 acre-feet of water in storage. Recharge to the Floyd and Plum Creek aquifers is from the Sioux Quartzite Wash aquifer and from fractures in the Sioux Quartzite. Recharge to the Ethan and Warren aquifers is from the Niobrara aquifer. Reported yield to wells from the Floyd and Plum Creek aquifers was as much as 1,000 gallons per minute. Predominant chemical constituents in water from the glacial aquifers are sulfate, calcium, and sodium. The bedrock aquifers averaged 40 to 110 feet in the thickness and contain about 11.3 million acre-feet of water in storage. The direction of water movement in the aquifers is to the northeast. This report is one of a series presenting hydrologic information of the High Plains aquifer in Oklahoma.\r\nThe predevelopment to 1980 water-level changes in the High Plains regional aquifer in Oklahoma are shown for Harper, Ellis, Woodward, Dewey, and Roger Mills Counties, on the east, and for the Oklahoma Panhandle, consist- ing of Cimarron, Texas, and Beaver Counties, on the west. About 1,470 water-level measurements in the Panhandle were used in compiling the predevelopment water-table map (Havens, 1982c). In the remaining area to the east about 150 water-level measurements from the 1950's to the 1970's are representative of predevelopment water levels. For the 1980 water-table map, about 330 measurements were made in the Panhandle and about 350 measurements in the eastern area by the Oklahoma Water Resources Board (Havens, 1982b).","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/wri834073","usgsCitation":"Havens, J., 1983, Water-level changes in the high plains regional aquifer, northwestern Oklahoma, predevelopment to 1980: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 83-4073, 1 map :col. ;on sheet 82 x 58 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri834073.","productDescription":"1 map :col. ;on sheet 82 x 58 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":158879,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":56461,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4073/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e6e4b07f02db5e7761","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Havens, J.S.","contributorId":12043,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Havens","given":"J.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":198375,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
