In connection with the proposed brine lake, the U.S. Geological Survey was requested to: (1) Define the existing ground-water conditions in the shallow fresh-water system of the project area; and (2) project the post-construction effects of the proposed lake on the fresh-water aquifer, especially in relation to hydraulic-head changes but also with respect to possible changes in the chemical quality of the ground water.</p>\n<p>The fresh-water aquifer in the project area is a shallow water-table system with relatively fresh water (generally a calcium sulfate type) that contains approximately 500 to 5,000 milligrams per liter of dissolved solids. The aquifer consists of Permian rocks with very small values of hydraulic conductivity and overlies a brine system (sodium chloride type) that is even less permeable. A thin transition zone separates the fresh-water aquifer and the brine system. Small quantities of infiltration from precipitation throughout the area's watershed constitute the recharge to the aquifer. Discharge from the aquifer consists of the small base flow along creeks; well discharge is negligible.</p>\n<p>Two-dimensional mathematical computer models were developed for aquifer simulation of: (1) Steady-state conditions in a fresh-water system and (2) transient conditions in a brine- fresh-water system where the density effects of the brine are considered. The main results 'of projecting the effects of the proposed Truscott Brine Lake on the fresh-water aquifer are: (1) Hydraulic head rises of 5 to 40 feet would be confined to areas near the proposed dam and along the lake shoreline, and (2) migration of salt water downstream from the dam generally would be limited to less than 1 mile and apparently would not reach equilibrium during the 100-year duration of the project. The modeling efforts did not include possible effects related to hydrodynamic dispersion in the brine- fresh-water system. Camp Verde, the nearest population center, is approximately 7 miles (11 km) west of the area. West Clear Creek canyon begins on the east at the confluence of the incised gorges of Willow Valley and of Clover Creek and is joined toward the west by Black Mountain Canyon. The canyon of West Clear Creek is very rugged; in several places it is more than 1,900 ft (580 m) deep. Creek elevation ranges from 6,100 ft (1,860 m) near the junction with Clover Creek to 3,200 ft (975 m) at the mouth of the canyon. The elevation of peaks and ridges near the canyon range from 4,000 ft (1,220 m) to 7,000 ft (2,135 m). Uplands at the head of Willow Valley and Clover Creek reach elevations up to 7,100 ft (2,165 m) above sea level.</p>\n<p>The greater part of the surface is underlain by late Tertiary volcanic rocks, mainly alkali olivine basalts. These overlie Lower Per i an sedimentary rocks consisting mostly of dolomite, limestone, and sandstone strata that dip gently westward. Late Tertiary and Quaternary sedimentary rocks and deposits mantle several ridges (terrace gravels) and cover basalt flows in Verde Valley at the west end of the area (Verde Formation). Using a mass-balance model, the writer calculated P loadings from present-day P concentrations measured in lake water and from other easily measured physical characteristics in a total of 28 lakes in drainage basins that contain only forest and residential land. The loadings from background sources (forest-land drainage and bulk precipitation) to each of the lakes were estimated by methods developed in a previous study. Differences between estimated present-day P loadings and loadings from background sources were attributed to changes in land use. The mean increase in annual P yield resulting from conversion of forest to residential land use was 7 kilograms per square kilometer, not including septic-tank system contributions. Calculated loadings from septic systems were found to correlate best with the number of near-shore dwellings around each lake in 1940. The regression equation expressing this relationship explained 36 percent of the sample variance. There was no significant correlation between estimated septic-tank system P loadings and numbers of dwellings present in 1960 or 1970. The evidence indicates that older systems might contribute more phosphorus to lakes than newer systems, and that there may be substantial time lags between septic-system installation and significant impacts on lake-water P concentrations. For lakes in basins that contain agricultural land, the P loading attributable to agriculture can be calculated as the difference between the estimated total loading and the sum of estimated loadings from all other (nonagricultural) sources. A comprehensive system for evaluating errors in all loading estimates is presented. The empirical relationships developed allow preliminary approximations of the cumulative impact that development has had on P loading and the amounts of P loading from generalized land-use categories for Puget Sound lowland lakes. In addition, the sensitivity of a lake to increased loading can be evaluated using the mass-balance model. The methods use data that are presently available for most lakes. All the estimates are most suitable for use in developing water-quality goals, setting priorities for lake studies, and designing studies of individual lakes. Of 43 holes drilled, 8 contained beds of lignite, but only two had beds greater than 30 in. thick. Maps for May and September show the potentiometric surface that is close to the annual low or high water level condition that usually occurs in May or September, respectively. The surface is mapped by determining the altitude of water levels in a network of wells and is represented on maps by contours that connect points of equal altitude. This report shows the potentiometric surface of the Floridan aquifer for September 1983. Data for the map were collected during September 12-23. The map represents water level conditions near the end of the summer rainy season when groundwater withdrawals for agricultural use are low. Water levels in most wells measured in September 1983 were higher than those measured in May 1983. September water levels averaged about 0.6 ft higher than May levels in areas north of Hillsborough County and about 7 ft higher in southern areas. Water level increases in the north ranged from zero to about 2 ft along coastal regions and from zero to about 5 ft in inland areas. Water level declines in the north ranged from zero to about 7 ft and occurred in scattered parts of all northern counties. In the south, water level increases ranged from zero to about 3 ft along coastal and extreme southern regions and from about 5 to 34 ft in other southern areas. The greatest water level increases occurred in southern Hillsborough County where irrigation pumpage contributes to large seasonal fluctuations. There were a few areas in Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties where September water levels showed declines ranging from about 1 to 3 ft when compared with May levels. Results must be made available to the public and be submitted to the President&nbsp;and the Congress. This report presents the results of a geochemical survey of the&nbsp;Arnold Mesa Roadless Area (U.S. Forest Service number 03092) in the Prescott and Tonto National Forests,&nbsp;Yavapai County, Arizona. The&nbsp;Arnold Mesa Roadless Area was classified&nbsp;as a further planning area during the Second Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE II) by the U.S. Forest Service, January 1979.</span></p>\n<p><span>During 1980 the&nbsp;U.S. Geological Survey and the&nbsp;U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted field investigations to evaluate the mineral resource potential of the&nbsp;Arnold Mesa Roadless Area,&nbsp;Yavapai County, Arizona. Field studies included geologic mapping (Wolrfe, 1983), aeromagnetic mapping (Davis and Wolfe, 1983), geochemical sampling (this report), and a survey of known mines and prospects (McColly and Korzeb, 1981).</span></p>\n<p>The&nbsp;Arnold Mesa Roadless Area comprises about 28,000 acres (11,300 hectares) in and along the flanks of the Black Hills south of Camp Verde, Arizona. The Black Hills form a northwest-trending drainage divide, between the Agua Fria drainage on the west and Verde River on the east, that extends through the roadless area. The crest and southwest flank of the divide within the study area are moderately dissected, gently rolling uplands. The northeast flank is steep terrain that forms the western wall of the Verde Valley. The northeast flank has a total relief within the study area of almost 4,000 ft (more than 1,200 m) and is deeply incised by the canyons of Gap and Chasm Creeks. The results from 12 sites (152 samples) within these plutons show two types of remanence behavior that appear fairly consistent with rock composition. The more leucocratic rocks (9 sites) tend to yield single-component magnetizations, of generally lower coercivities and blocking temperatures relative to the other units, that are considered to represent a recent viscous overprint, The mesocratic to melanocratic rocks show both single- and multicomponent magnetizations, the latter giving characteristic directions isolated through remagnetization-plane analysis. Three sites are considered reliable and yield paleomagnetic poles, of inferred Early Devonian age, that may reflect a 30? southward displacement from stable North America. A previously published steady-state finite-difference digital model was converted to a transient-state model by changing boundary conditions and adding storage coefficients. No calibration of the transient-state model was attempted. Predicted drawdowns with a minimum amount of coal development combined with other kinds of development were as great as 2,000 feet. As much as 300 feet of additional drawdown were simulated for the maximum amount of coal development. Drawdowns near pumping wells are not predicted.
