The area is at the southern ·end of Warm Springs Mountain in Alleghany County just northeast of Covington, the county seat (index map). U.S. Highway 220 forms part of the western boundary, and U.S. Forest Service Road 125, which parallels Pounding Mill Creek, forms the eastern boundary. The principal streams draining the area are Pounding Mill Creek, Dry Run, and Roaring Run, all tributaries of the Jackson River. The highest point in the area is Big Knob at the north end, 4,072 ft (1241 m) above sea level; the lowest points, about 1,400 ft (427 m) above sea level, are at the south side, along Dry Run and Pounding Mill Creek. In general, the hill slopes are steep and heavily wooded with second- or third-growth hardwoods and scattered pine and hemlock. Dolly Ann Hollow near the east end of the area is a steep, boulder-strewn gorge, quite picturesque, but containing no good trails. A good trail up Dry Run connects a trail crossing the ridge between Bald Knob and Big Knob. No other trails cross the area.
","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/mf1358D","usgsCitation":"Lesure, F.G., and Jones, J.G., 1983, Mineral resource potential map of the Dolly Ann Roadless Area, Alleghany County, Virginia: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1358, Report: 14 p.; 1 Plate: 37.55 x 33.60 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1358D.","productDescription":"Report: 14 p.; 1 Plate: 37.55 x 33.60 inches","numberOfPages":"14","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":180429,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/MF1358D.jpg"},{"id":308517,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1358-D/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"8 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":308518,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1358-D/plate-1.pdf","text":"Plate 1","size":"23 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Virginia","county":"Alleghany County","otherGeospatial":"Dolly Ann Roadless Area","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -80,37.75 ], [ -80,37.8675 ], [ -79.86749999999999,37.8675 ], [ -79.86749999999999,37.75 ], [ -80,37.75 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1be4b07f02db6a8d62","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lesure, Frank G.","contributorId":20068,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lesure","given":"Frank","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":263031,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Jones, Jay G.","contributorId":45334,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jones","given":"Jay","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":263032,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

A shallow water table occurs from 0 to 50 feet below the land surface principally in the alluvial deposits along the streams and rivers in the Boulder-Fort Collins-Greeley area. This shallow water table underlies approximately 400 square miles and is maintained by natural recharge within the South Platte River basin and by the infiltration of irrigation water that is diverted into the basin from streams and reservoirs in the Colorado and the Laramie River basins. Return flow from irrigation, which is mostly ground water, helps maintain the flow of the South Platte River and its tributaries. The report includes a map from which depth to water table and the direction of ground-water movement can be determined. The map, compiled on a topographic base, shows the areal extent of the saturated materials and the altitude and configuration of the ground-water surface. The water-table contour map was prepared using data from approximately 400 wells. Monitoring of shallow ground-water within the study area shows depths to water have changed only slightly over the last 20 years, except for some seasonal and drought-related fluctuations. Gradients, computed from ground-water measurements, range from 27.7 feet per mile in Lone Tree-Spring Creek valley to 10.3 feet per mile in the South Platte River valley. The shallow ground-water underflow from the major tributaries in the basin is about 29,000 acre-feet per year, and underflow calculated at a cross section near Kersey is about 12,000 acre-feet per year.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri834058","usgsCitation":"Schneider, P.A., 1983, Shallow ground water in the Boulder-Fort Collins-Greeley area, Front Range urban corridor, Colorado, 1975-77: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 83-4058, 1 Plate: 41.96 × 31.86 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri834058.","productDescription":"1 Plate: 41.96 × 31.86 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":161788,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":410064,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35694.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":84582,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4058/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","city":"Boulder, Fort Collins, Greeley","otherGeospatial":"Front Range urban corridor","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -105.46470339334677,\n 40.68848809489273\n ],\n [\n -105.46470339334677,\n 39.92665986663209\n ],\n [\n -104.58735150676397,\n 39.92665986663209\n ],\n [\n -104.58735150676397,\n 40.68848809489273\n ],\n [\n -105.46470339334677,\n 40.68848809489273\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49fae4b07f02db5f420a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Schneider, Paul A. The watersheds have mixed land use and range in size from 0.34 to 3.45 square miles. Watershed soils, land use, and storm-drainage system data are described. Urban development ranged from a sparsely populated area with open-ditch storm sewers and 19% impervious area to a completely sewered watershed with 61% impervious cover. The U.S. Geological Survey natural-basin and urban-watershed models were calibrated for the nine watersheds using 5-minute interval rainfall data from the Tampa, Florida, National Weather Service rain gage to simulate annual peak discharge for the period 1906-52. A log-Pearson Type III frequency analysis of the simulated annual maximum discharge was used to determine the 2-, 5-, 10-, 25-, 50-, and 100-year flood discharges for each watershed. Flood discharges were related in a multiple-linear regression to drainage area, channel slope, detention storage area, and an urban-development factor determined by the extent of curb and gutter street drainage and storm-sewer system. Increased use of the water resources of the area will have a direct impact on their quantity and quality. As part of 18 surface-water projects, 35 reservoirs have been proposed with a combined total storage of 2.18 million acre-feet, 41% greater than the mean annual outflow from the basin. Three computer models were used to demonstrate methods of evaluating future impacts of reservoir development in the Yampa River basin. Four different reservoir configurations were used to simulate the effects of different degrees of proposed reservoir development. A multireservoir-flow model included both within-basin and transmountain diversions. Simulations indicated that in many cases diversion amounts would not be available for either type of diversion. A corresponding frequency analysis of reservoir storage levels indicated that most reservoirs would be operating with small percentages of total capacities and generally with less than 20% of conservation-pool volumes. Simulations using a dissolved-solids model indicated that extensive reservoir development could increase average annual concentrations at most locations. Simulations using a single-reservoir model indicated no significant occurrence of water-temperature stratification in most reservoirs due to limited reservoir storage. The purpose was to document changes in total phosphorus loads resulting from a change in agricultural waste management practices in the Johnson Brook watershed in Maine. Streamflow data include mean-daily discharges for the period May 12, 1980, through September 30, 1981, and instantaneous discharges determined during water quality sampling. Water quality data for the period March 1980 to September 1981 include total phosphorus concentrations determined from samples collected using cross-sectional depth-integrating sampling techniques and from samples collected using a pumping sampler. Although a previous, airborne electromagnetic survey found no anomalies in the vicinity of the ancient mines in the region, surface indications of anomalous copper and zinc at both Dhahar and Al Hajrah are abundant. \r\n\r\nReconnaissance Crone electromagnetic traverses across the Dhahar prospect area delineated numerous conductive zones, but none had a dip-angle anomaly of more than 10?. Similar results were obtained at Al Hajrah. \r\n\r\nWith one or two encouraging exceptions, self-potential surveys at Al Hajrah showed only broad gradients and anomalies having amplitudes of less than 40 mV. Dipole-dipole induced polarization surveys at Al Hajrah delineated two nearly continuous polarizable zones having an aggregate strike length of almost 7 km. The two zones are symmetrically disposed on either side of a median aplitic dike and may lie on opposing limbs of a south-plunging antiform. Chargeabilities in the anomalous zones are weak to moderate but in most places are clearly associated with anomalous copper and (or) zinc concentrations found by surface sampling. \r\n\r\nGround electromagnetic traverses are recommended to determine the most conductive intervals of anomalous induced polarization effect in the anomalous zones; these conductive intervals should then be tested by drilling, where appropriate. Reconnaissance self-potential traverses are also recommended at Dhahar, and additional ground electromagnetic surveys are recommended across two airborne electromagnetic anomalies located immediately southeast of the Al Hajrah target.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83778","usgsCitation":"Blank, H., 1983, Geophysical investigations in the Dhahar-Al Hajrah region, Wadi Malahah Quadrangle, southwestern Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-778, ii, 31 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83778.","productDescription":"ii, 31 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":150539,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0778/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":47548,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0778/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":47549,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0778/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":47550,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0778/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":47551,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0778/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":47552,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0778/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":47553,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0778/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac8e4b07f02db67c1b6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Blank, H. Population of this 250-square-mile area increased about 50 percent between 1970 and 1976. The study area includes a small segment of the Willamette River alluvial valley near Canby, and extends northward to the Clackamas River and eastward to the western boundary of Mount Hood National Forest. Also included is the narrow, well-populated corridor along U.S. Highway 26 from Cherryville to Government Camp.

The main part of the study area is largely a rolling upland underlain by volcanic and stream-deposited rocks ranging in age from Eocene to Holocene. In most places, these rocks yield water in quantities adequate for individual homes. Locally, ground-water supplies are adequate for small irrigation, industrial, or public-supply uses. Depths of wells range from 50 to 1,000 feet; wells generally are shallowest in lowlands near streams and deepest in upland locations near deeply incised stream valleys.

All aquifers receive recharge at sufficient rates to sustain present rates of natural and man-produced discharge. All aquifers could supply additional water, but careful engineering is needed to avoid overdevelopment problems for the Columbia River Basalt Group near Oregon City.

Chemical analyses indicate that the ground water in the study area is of good quality for drinking and other uses. Mineralized water reported from some wells northeast of Canby may be from rocks of the Skamania Volcanics, which locally are at shallow depth. Although ground water locally may be subject to bacterial contamination where it occurs at shallow depths in alluvium and other unconsolidated deposits, no contaminated water was identified during the study.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr801049","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Oregon Water Resources Department","usgsCitation":"Leonard, A., and Collins, C.A., 1983, Ground water in the northern part of Clackamas County, Oregon: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-1049, Report: v, 85 p., 2 Plates: 34.53 x 24.34 inches and 34.96 x 24.88 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr801049.","productDescription":"Report: v, 85 p., 2 Plates: 34.53 x 24.34 inches and 34.96 x 24.88 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":518,"text":"Oregon Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":405726,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/1049/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":405725,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/1049/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142557,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/1049/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":405724,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/1049/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Oregon","county":"Clackamas County","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.76123046875,\n              45.01141864227728\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.84936523437499,\n              45.01141864227728\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.84936523437499,\n              45.45627757127799\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.76123046875,\n              45.45627757127799\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.76123046875,\n              45.01141864227728\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ab0e4b07f02db66d750","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Leonard, A.R.","contributorId":101669,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Leonard","given":"A.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160652,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Collins, C.
