In response to this need, a sampling approach was developed to estimate water pumped for irrigation on the High Plains during 1980. Pumpage was computed by combining application estimates with mapped irrigated-acreage information. Irrigation application (inches of water applied) was measured at 480 sites in 15 counties in the High Plains during the 1980 growing season. The relationship between calculated Blaney-Criddle irrigation demand and measured application was used to estimate application for unsampled areas of the High Plains. Application estimates multiplied by irrigated-acreate estimates, compiled from Landsat-satellite imagery, yielded the volume of ground water pumped for irrigation. The estimate of ground water pumped for irrigation in the High Plains during 1980 and 18,902,000 acre-feet for 13 ,715,000 irrigated areas. The sampled application data were evaluated for significant trends. The application was greater for crops requiring more water such as corn and hay and less for crops such as sorghum, grain, and cotton. The data showed greater application for flood-irrigated systems than for sprinkler-irrigation systems. Areas of the High Plains with thin saturated thickness tended to have a smaller average discharge per well, fewer irrigated acres per well, and a predominance of crops requiring less water crops. Additional study and monitoring are needed to detect possible hydrologic changes caused by coal mining.

Much of the ground-water discharge from the Star Point Sandstone in the Mesaverde Group in the Wasatch Plateau occurs along faults. In the Book Cliffs, where faulting is less extensive, most of the ground-water discharge is from the Flagstaff Limestone. The Flagstaff Limestone is greatly diffusive, has a small storage coefficient, and contains water which is perched.

Springs issuing from the Star Point Sandstone in the Mud Creek drainage (Wasatch Plateau) had recession indexes greater than 365 days per log cycle. Springs issuing at higher altitudes from the Colton Formation and the Flagstaff Limestone in the Soldier Creek area (Book Cliffs) have great seasonal variability, with recession indexes ranging from 24 to 115 days per log cycle. Estimated transmissivities in the Soldier Creek area ranged from 0.003 foot squared per day in the lower part of the Castlegate Sandstone to 0.07 foot squared per day in the Price River Formation.

Seepage from the Star Point Sandstone is the major contributor to base flow of the stream in Eccles Canyon (Wasatch Plateau). Gains of as much as 230 gallons per minute occurred near a fault zone which crosses Eccles Canyon at the junction with South Fork Canyon.

The potentiometric surface of water in the Blackhawk Formation in the Wasatch Plateau (Mud Creek drainage) and the Book Cliffs (Soldier Creek area) generally is above the coal zones, and dewatering will be necessary in most places during mining. The total reported mine discharge during 1980 was about 2,800 acre-feet.

During the 1980 water year, ground-water discharge from the Flagstaff Limestone contributed about 4,400 acre-feet, or 41 percent of the combined streamflow of Coal, Soldier, and Dugout Creeks. Discharge from the Blackhawk and other formations contributed about 2,200 acre-feet, or 21 percent of the streamflow. The recharge to a 4,020-acre outcrop of the Flagstaff Limestone in the Soldier Creek area was determined from measurements of the discharge of springs and seepage gains in streams. The estimated recharge was 2 inches per year, or 12 percent of the April 1 snowpack, or 9 percent of the precipitation during 1980.

Benthic-diversity indexes at streams in the Book Cliffs and Wasatch Plateau are related to the size of the bed material. Ground magnetic measurements made in the vicinity of several known cased wells yielded total field anomalies with peak values ranging from about 1,500 to 6,000 gammas. The anomalies measured on the ground are very narrow and, considering noise due to other cultural and geologic sources, a line spacing on the order of 50 feet (15.2 m) would be necessary to locate all casings in the test area. \r\n\r\nThe mathematical model used to represent a casing was a set of magnetic pole pairs. By use of a non-linear least squares curve fitting (inversion) program, model parameters which characterize each test casing were determined. The position and strength of the uppermost pole was usually well resolved. The parameters of lower poles were not as well resolved but it appears that the results are adequate for predicting the anomalies which would be observed at aircraft altitudes. Modeling based on the parameters determined from the ground data indicates that all of the test casings could be detected by airborne measurements made at heights of 150 to 200 feet (45.7-61.0 m) above the ground, provided lines spaced as closely as 330 feet (100 m) were used and provided noise due to other cultural and geologic sources is not very large. Given the noise levels of currently available equipment and assuming very low magnetic gradients due to geologic sources, the detection range for total field measurements is greater than that for measurements of the horizontal or vertical gradient of the total intensity. \r\n\r\nElectrical self-potential anomalies were found to be associated with most of the casings where measurements were made. However, the anomalies tend to be very narrow and, in several cases, they are comparable in magnitude to other small anomalies which are not directly associated with casings. Measurements made with a terrain conductivity meter and slingram system were negative. However, from other work it is known that electrical resistivity and induced polarization measurements can be influenced significantly by the presence of a casing. \r\n\r\nIt is concluded that detailed ground magnetic surveys would be effective in locating casings within relatively small areas. It would be very costly to cover large areas with ground surveys but it appears that airborne surveys may be a cost-effective means of locating wells when the search area is on the order of a few square miles or more. Also, airborne methods could be used in some areas where access to the area on the ground is difficult or impossible.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83702","usgsCitation":"Frischknecht, F.C., Muth, L., Grette, R., Buckley, T., and Kornegay, B., 1983, Geophysical methods for locating abandoned wells: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-702, ii, 211 p. chiefly ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83702.","productDescription":"ii, 211 p. chiefly ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140173,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0702/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34601,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0702/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1ae4b07f02db6a85dd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Frischknecht, Frank C.","contributorId":57838,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Frischknecht","given":"Frank","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154736,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Muth, L.","contributorId":10035,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Muth","given":"L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154733,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Grette, R.","contributorId":13230,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Grette","given":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154734,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Buckley, T.","contributorId":17222,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Buckley","given":"T.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154735,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Kornegay, B.","contributorId":93041,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kornegay","given":"B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154737,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

The Shield is bordered on the southwest by Cenozoic sedimentary and igneous rocks of the Red Sea paar and on the east by the Arabian Platform, an area of basin sedimentation throughout Phanerozoic time. The Shield appears to have been formed by successive episodes of island arc volcanism and sea-floor spreading, followed by several cycles of compressive tectonism and metamorphism. An interpretation and synthesis of a deep-refraction seismic profile from the Riyadh area to the Farasan Islands, and regional gravity, aeromagnetic, heat flow, and surface geologic data have yielded a self-consistent regional-scale model of the crust and upper mantle for this area. \r\n\r\nThe model consists of two 20 km-thick layers of crust with an average compressional wave velocity in the upper crust of about 6.3 km/s and an average velocity in the lower. crust of about 7.0 km/s. This crust thins abruptly to less than 20 km near the southwestern end of the profile where Precambrian outcrops abut the Cenozoic rocks and to 8 km beneath the Farasan Islands. The data over the coastal plain and Red Sea shelf areas are fit satisfactorily by an oceanic crustal model. A major lateral velocity inhomogeneity in the crust is inferred about 25 km northeast of Sabhah and is supported by surface geologic evidence. \r\n\r\nThe major velocity discontinuities occur at about the same depth across the entire Shield and are interpreted to indicate horizontal metamorphic stratification of the Precambrian crust. Several lateral inhomogenities in both the upper and lower .crust of the . Shield are interpreted, to indicate bulk compositional variations. \r\n\r\nThe subcrustal portion of the model is composed of a hot, low-density lithosphere beneath the Red Sea which is systematically cooler and denser to the northeast. This model provides a mechanism which explains the observed topographic uplift, regional gravity pattern, heat flow, and mantle compressional wave velocities. Such a lithosphere could be produced by upwelling of hot asthenosphere beneath the Red Sea which then flows laterally beneath the lithosphere of the Arabian Plate.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83638","usgsCitation":"Gettings, M.E., Blank, H., Mooney, W.D., and Healy, J.H., 1983, Crustal structure of southwestern Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-638, ii, 55 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83638.","productDescription":"ii, 55 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140175,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0638/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34400,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0638/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acee4b07f02db67f432","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gettings, M. Most of these data were collected as part of specific ground-water studies conducted in cooperation with various Federal, State, and local agencies. Ground-water quality data, as well as data on construction, yield, water levels, and other physical well parameters collected prior to 1981 are available from the U.S. Geological Survey, Oklahoma District Office.\r\nAlthough water-quality data for wells, test holes, and springs have been published, they are scattered though a variety of reports and are not readily available on a statewide basis. Geochemical analyses reveal that organic carbon contents in ore samples from all three sand units are uniformly low (most are less than 0.01 percent). Vanadium (ranging from 0.0002 to 0.19 percent) and sulfur (ranging from <0.01 to 0.74 percent) typically show positive correlations with uranium; however, vanadium contents rarely exceed those of uranium in ore samples. Although no systematic relationship of either selenium or molybdenum to uranium is evident, some ore samples contain anomalously high concentrations of either of these elements. \r\n\r\nGeochemically, the ore deposits of the Church Rock area contrast greatly with primary (tabular) uranium orebodies in the GUR which contain abundant organic carbon and greater amounts of vanadium and sulfur. \r\n\r\nThese differences and radiometric age determinations strongly suggest that the Church Rock ores formed as a result of the redistribution of uranium from preexisting uranium deposits within the last 1 m.y. However, the Church Rock deposits differ geochemically from redistributed orebodies in the Westwater Canyon Member elsewhere in the GUR. Specifically, redistributed orebodies in the Ambrosia Lake district, which are comparable in contents of uranium and organic carbon with the Church Rock deposits, are characterized by vanadium contents typically higher than those of uranium. Similarly, sulfur contents in the redistributed deposits of the Ambrosia Lake district are greater than those found in the Church Rock ores. In addition, anomalously high concentrations of molybdenum have rarely been found in other redistributed orebodies of the GUR.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83194","usgsCitation":"Fishman, N.S., and Reynolds, R.L., 1983, Geochemical characteristics of the Church Rock 1 and 1 East uranium deposits, Grants uranium region, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-194, 28 p. ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83194.","productDescription":"28 p. ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141607,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0194/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36404,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0194/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae5bf","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fishman, Neil S.","contributorId":106464,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fishman","given":"Neil","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158402,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Reynolds, Richard L. 0000-0002-4572-2942 rreynolds@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4572-2942","contributorId":441,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reynolds","given":"Richard","email":"rreynolds@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":271,"text":"Federal Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":158401,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
