Chemical analyses of samples for 19 postorogenic plutons from the southeastern Arabian Shield show that these rocks have average potassium/rubidium ratios (162) and average rubidium/strontium ratios (11.8) characteristic of highly evolved granites. Most of the analyzed samples are peraluminous. Three plutons are physically similar in terms of shape and megascopic textural zonation to peralkaline complexes in the northeastern part of the Shield, but none of the samples from these plutons is peralkaline. However, these plutons do contain the least-evolved samples.

\n

Zinc, yttrium, uranium, thorium, and possibly copper, each occur in anomalously high concentrations in at least one pluton relative to contents typically cited for granite. The average regional concentrations of copper and zinc are anomalously high. These facts suggest at least a moderate potential for mineralization in the southeastern part of the Shield. Good correlations (r of 0.5 to 0.8) between uranium, thorium, yttrium, and rubidium and an excellent correlation (r=0.98) between uranium and radium-equivalent uranium suggest that secondary deposits of these elements are unlikely and that magmatic deposits, especially of a pegmatitic nature, are more likely.

\n

Concentrations of some major elements and several trace elements covary with sample location as measured by latitude and longitude. This fact is interpreted to reflect regional variations in the protolith that have been proposed on the basis of lead isotopic data. The chemical variations suggest a largely oceanic crustal component for granites in the southwestern part of the southeastern Shield and a largely continental crustal component to the northeast.

\n

Further quantitative analysis is recommended to verify and accurately delineate anomalous concentrations of trace elements. Trend surface analysis of all available data for postorogenic granites from the eastern Arabian Shield is suggested as a method for testing regional variations in the protolith that might control locations of highly favorable areas of ore deposition.

A geologic and geochemical investigation and a survey of mines and prospects have been conducted to evaluate the mineral resource potential of the Spanish Peaks Wilderness Study Area, Huerfano and Las Animas Counties, in south-central Colorado. The·study area is underlain by sedimentary rocks of Paleozoic to Tertiary age (Johnson, 1969). Stocks and dikes were emplaced between 20 and 25 m.y. ago (Smith, 1979) forming East and West Spanish Peaks and the White Peaks.

\n

Most of the study area lacks significant geochemical anomalies and has a low mineral potential. Anomalous concentrations of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc in the rocks and drainage basins in the vicinity of the old mines and prospects on West Spanish Peak indicate a moderate potential for small mineralized veins in this area. Ore-bearing veinlets have been worked in the past, primarily for silver and lead; however, the sparsity, small size, and low grade of the veins diminish their significance.

\n

The depth of several thousand feet at which coal may underlie the surface rocks of the study area makes it a resource with little likelihood of development. The potential for oil and gas appears low because of the apparent lack of structural traps and the intense igneous activity in the area.

It is often difficult to obtain discharge ratings at urban gaging stations. This report presents the results of using an automated constant-rate dyedilution technique to measure discharge at two sites in Madison, Wisconsin. The sites selected have well-defined stage-discharge ratings, developed during previous hydrologic studies. One site has a 60-inch diameter concrete storm sewer and the other a concrete-lined open trapezoidal channel.

\n

Equipment selected to automate the method included a portable automatic water sampler, a four-channel event recorder, and a variable-speed peristaltic pump for dye injection. An electrical switching circuit was designed to coordinate the operation of this equipment.

\n

During the data-collection period of 1 year, a total of 20 storms were monitored.

\n

The analysis showed that the discharges measured by dye-dilution techniques were generally within ± 10 percent of the discharges determined from ratings established by current-meter measurements. Larger differences were noted at the start of and on the rising limb of four hydrographs. Of the 20 storms monitored, dilution measurements on 17 were of acceptable accuracy. Peak discharges from the open-channel site ranged from 0 to 12 percent departures from the existing rating whereas the comparison of peak discharge at the storm sewer site ranged from 0 to 5 percent departures from the existing rating.

The amphipod population is associated with a homogeneous, relict fine-grained sand body 0.10-1.5 m thick that is deposited during the marine transgression over the Bering land bridge 8,000-10,000 yr B.P. Modern current and water mass movements and perhaps whale feeding activity prevent modern deposition in this area. \r\n\r\nThe distribution of the transgressive sand sheet, associated amphipod community and feeding gray whales mapped by aerial survey correlate closely with three types of sea-floor pits observed on high (500 kHz) and low (105 kHz) resolution side-scan sonar; they are attributed to gray whale feeding traces and their subsequent current scour modification. The fresh and modified feeding pits are present in 22,000 km2 of the basin and they cover a total of 2 to 18% of the sea floor in different areas of the feeding region. The smallest size class of pits approximates whale mouth gape size and is assumed to represent fresh whale feeding pits. Fresh feeding disturbance of the sea floor is estimated to average about 5.7% for a full feeding season. Combined with information that 34% of the measured benthic biomass is amphipod prey species, and calculating the number of gray whale feeding days in the Alaskan waters plus amount consumed per day, it can be estimated that Chirikov Basin, 2% of the feeding area, supplies a minimum of 5.3 to 7.1% of the gray whale's food resource in the Bering Sea and Arctic Ocean. If a maximum of 50% of the fresh feeding features are assumed to be missed because they parallel side-scan beam paths, then a maximum whale food resource of 14.2% is possible in northeastern Bering Sea. Because of side-scan techniques and possible higher amphipod biomass estimates, a reasonable minimum estimate of the total whale food resource in northeastern Bering Sea is 10%. \r\n\r\nThese data show that side-scan sonar is a powerful new technique for analyzing marine mammal benthic feeding grounds. Sonographs reveal that the gray whales profoundly disturb the substrate and initiate substantial further erosion by bottom currents, all of which enhances productivity of the prey species and results in a 'farming of the sea floor'.
