On nautical charts, we measured four island characteristics (area, length, width, shape), three isolation factors (distances to nearest island, mainland, and a water barrier),, and two variables related to potential feeding habitat within 5 km of the center of the colony (wetland area and land-water interface, i.e., the linear distance between the marsh/upland and all water bodies within the same 5-km radius). One univariable and five multivariable .procedures were used to determine which habitat features were best related to population size .(all species combined). Multicollinearity problems among the variables limited interpretation for most procedures. Both univariable and the multivariable procedures indicated that land-water interface was the most important of the nine variables, but for all models, less than 10% of the total variance was explained (rz is less than 0.10). The size of the colony was not related to the amount of wetland area (within 5-km).per se. Colony data showed better 'structure' when examined on the basis of geographic and disturbance gradients. Population sizes of colonies near man-altered habitats were compared with those surrounded by relatively natural habitats in three geographic zones: north, middle, and south. Significant differences were found in colony size among the three zones (south largest) and between disturbance types. Surprisingly, in all three zones, colonies near man-altered areas were larger on average than those near more natural habitats in this region. A possible reason for this difference is suggested.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Waterfowl and Wetlands Symposium: Proceedings of a Symposium on Waterfowl and Wetlands Management in the Coastal Zone of the Atlantic Flyway","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"Delaware Coastal Management Program, Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environment Control","publisherLocation":"Dover, Delaware","usgsCitation":"Erwin, R., Spendelow, J., Geissler, P., and Williams, B.K., 1987, Relationships between nesting populations of wading birds and habitat features along the Atlantic Coast, chap. of Waterfowl and Wetlands Symposium: Proceedings of a Symposium on Waterfowl and Wetlands Management in the Coastal Zone of the Atlantic Flyway, p. 56-67.","productDescription":"v, 522","startPage":"56","endPage":"67","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":201083,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac8e4b07f02db67c097","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Whitman, William R.","contributorId":111631,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Whitman","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":506387,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Meredith, William H.","contributorId":112289,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Meredith","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":506388,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2}],"authors":[{"text":"Erwin, R.M.","contributorId":57396,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Erwin","given":"R.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":328313,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Spendelow, J. In order to be effective and to ensure the long-term survival of species, researchers at Patuxent attempt to manage captive populations according to the principles of population genetics. This includes the use of estimated inbreeding levels for mate selections in Masked Bobwhites and biochemical analyses to measure extant genetic material and determine relationships among Whooping Cranes. As added insurance against catastrophic losses, or even random losses of key individuals representing unique lineages, cryopreservation of semen has been studied and used for some species. Artificial insemination, using either stored or fresh semen, is used to improve fertility rates, thereby increasing the chances for survival of unique genetic lines. Finally, a periodic influx of unrelated stock occurs, when feasible, in order to enhance the genetic base of captive populations. The application of these techniques will ensure that future releases utilize genetically viable animals, thereby improving the potential for successful reintroductions into the wild.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of the 2nd Jean Delacour/IFCB Symposium on Breeding Birds in Captivity. Five field studies, presented in a CASE HISTORY format, illustrate study designs .and thetypes of information collected. The pesticides investigated included DDT, heptachlor, endr1n, and famphur, and the species studied included the American kestrel (Falco sparverius), Canada goose (Branta canadensis}, black--crowned night-heron (Nycticorax nycticorac), and black-billed magpie (Pica pica). Wildlife biologists conducting field studies of pesticides encounter a variety of design and logistics problems. However, a number of procedures are now available to the researcher for field evaluations. The three principa1 types of insecticides (organochlorines (OC's), organophosphates (OP's) and carbamates (CB's) require different field approaches. In this paper, five field studies, conducted by my colleagues and me between 1974 and 1982, in the northwestern portion of the United States (Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and northern Nevada), are reviewed to illustrate procedures for evaluating the effects of these insecticides.on wildlife populations. Althought most OC pesticides were banned in the United States during the 1970's (.for review, see F1eming et al. 1983), we studied several OC applications, including the last major DDT spray project in 1974. Use of OP's and CB's increased during the 1970's and 1980s as the OC's were phased out.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Collected Reports from the Czechoslovak-American Symposium on Toxic Effects of Chemical Environmental Contaminants upon Production and Reproduction Ability in Free-Living Animals (held October 3-4, 1983)","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"University of Veterinary Medicine","publisherLocation":"Kosice, Czechoslovakia.","collaboration":"Actually published in 1987. At least 7 species of kestrels have been used to document the presence of environmental contamination primarily organochlorines and metals, in at least 15 countries. Captive kestrels have been used in studies involving a wide variety of environmental contaminants and toxicants examining: bioaccumulation; lethal toxicity using acute, chronic, and secondary exposures; effects on reproduction, eggshell thickness, and related enzyme systems; and effects on a wide variety of physiological and biochemical parameters. Field studies have examined the response of kestrels to exposure to insecticides. Kestrels should continue to play a vital role as a bioindicator and raptorial 'white mouse', especially because of their relationship to other falconiformes, several of which have been shown to be extremely sensitive to environmental changes.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"The Ancestral Kestrel: Proceedings of a Symposium on Kestrel Species, St. Louis, Missouri, December 1st, 1983","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"Raptor Research Foundation, Inc. and MacDonald Raptor Research Centre of McGill University","publisherLocation":"Ste. According to analyses of physiographic and state/province strata, some areas are largely responsible for the increase in the U.S. and southern Canada and that only in Illinois and Arkansas have kestrels declined. BBS data are too few in Florida to detect trends concerning F. s. paulus. Although the treatment and control of diseases of wild cranes is difficult, the management of captive cranes is becoming more and more successful through the use of intensive husbandry, preventative medicine, and parasite control programs. this paper describes some of the infectious and parasitic diseases of wild and captive cranes and outlines management principles for their control, especially in confinement.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of the 1983 International Crane Workshop","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"conferenceTitle":"International Crane Workshop","conferenceDate":"February, 1983","conferenceLocation":"Held in Bharatpur, India","language":"English","publisher":"International Crane Foundation","publisherLocation":"Baraboo, Wisconsin","usgsCitation":"Carpenter, J.W., and Derrickson, S.R., 1987, Infectious and parasitic diseases of cranes: Principles of treatment and prevention, in Proceedings of the 1983 International Crane Workshop, Held in Bharatpur, India, February, 1983, p. 539-553.","productDescription":"15 p.","startPage":"539","endPage":"553","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":201041,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":350720,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.savingcranes.org/education/library/proceedings/"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f1e4b07f02db5ee9ac","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Archibald, George W.","contributorId":73705,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Archibald","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":505986,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Pasquier, Roger F.","contributorId":112846,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pasquier","given":"Roger","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":505987,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2}],"authors":[{"text":"Carpenter, James W.","contributorId":91518,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carpenter","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":327770,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Derrickson, Scott R.","contributorId":102590,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Derrickson","given":"Scott","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":327769,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Edwin B. Forsythe NWR (BNW) during three field seasons (1983-1896).  Use of the BNWR impoundments was strongly associated with open vs. closed hunting seasons and with presence or absence of ice cover. Black ducks primarily used the impoundments for daytime roost sites and fed in saltmarsh areas at night during the hunting season.    Following the hunting season use generally dispersed to saltmarsh and inland freshwater habitats. Freeze-up of the impoundments resulted in dispersal of black ducks to saltmarsh, inland freshwater, or areas to the south of New Jersey. We conclude that the BNWR impoundments only partially meet the habitat requirements of wintering black ducks.  Access to saltmarsh habitats for feeding, and to inland freshwater habitats during periods of hard freeze, may be critical. The utility of the BNWR impoundments to black ducks, needs to be considered in conjunction with the availability of these other important habitats.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Waterfowl and Wetlands Symposium:  Proceedings of a Symposium on Waterfowl and Wetlands Management in the Coastal Zone of the Atlantic Flyway","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"Delaware Coastal Management Program, Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Coastal Control","publisherLocation":"Dover, Delaware","usgsCitation":"Conroy, M., Costanzo, G., and Stotts, D.B., 1987, Winter movements of American black ducks in relation to natural and impounded wetlands in New Jersey, chap. of Waterfowl and Wetlands Symposium:  Proceedings of a Symposium on Waterfowl and Wetlands Management in the Coastal Zone of the Atlantic Flyway, p. 31-45.","productDescription":"v, 522","startPage":"31","endPage":"45","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":201386,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49dee4b07f02db5e30fd","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Whitman, William R.","contributorId":111631,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Whitman","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":506140,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Meredith, William H.","contributorId":113637,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Meredith","given":"William H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":506141,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2}],"authors":[{"text":"Conroy, M.J.","contributorId":84690,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Conroy","given":"M.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":328027,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Costanzo, G.R.","contributorId":17960,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Costanzo","given":"G.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":328026,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Stotts, Daniel B.","contributorId":90003,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stotts","given":"Daniel","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":328028,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
