Areas in the Coastal Plain with existing or potential saltwater intrusion are delineated. Data collected through 1981 indicate that freshwater aquifers in parts of seven Coastal-Plain counties are contaminated by saline water. Encroachment of saltwater into freshwater aquifers in the Sayreville area of Middlesex County and in the lower peninsula of Cape May County has been reported for about 40 years and is now more extensive. Several other areas are experiencing limited saltwater intrusion. These include the Keyport-Union Beach area in Monmouth County, areas along the Delaware estuary in Gloucester and Salem Counties, and at Point Pleasant Beach and Seaside Heights in Ocean County. The continuing updip movement of saline water in the Potomac-Raritan-Magothy aquifer system is also threatening existing freshwater supplies in the interior areas of Gloucester and Salem Counties. Saltwater intrusion has resulted from extensive ground-water withdrawals. The resultant freshwater head declines have caused reversals in the natural hydraulic gradients that permit inland movement of saline water from adjacent saltwater bodies. The maximum depth of the submerged channel of Yegua Creek is usually less than 35 feet and in most areas of the lake the depth is less than 10 feet.
\n
Several factors including thermal circulation resulting from the cooling of surface water, wind action, and the large inflow volume in realtion to the lake volume combine to keep the lake well mixed throughout the year. The oxygen concentrations remain high areally and at depth because of good circulation of lake waters during most of the year. Even in summer most bottom oxygen concentrations were in excess of 50 percent of saturation.
\n
Due to year-round high percent oxygen saturation from surface to bottom in most parts of the lake, caused by the frequent periods of circulation that occur during all seasons, concentrations of dissolved iron, and manganese reamin low. Dissovled iron concentrations were less than 50 micrograms per liter and dissolved manganese concentrations were less than 40 micrograms per liter. The total inorganic nitrogen concentrations varied little throughout the lake. During the summer, concentrations were 0.01 milligram per liter at the surface to 0.02 milligram per liter at the bottom; and during the winter 0.11 milligram per liter at the surface and 0.10 milligram per liter at the bottom. Concentrations in the headwaters were about double those in the lake. Surface and bottom total phosphorus concentrations, during summer and winter averaged about the same, 0.04 and 0.06 milligram per liter throughout the lake, except in the headwaters where the concentrations were about double those in the lake.
\n
Homogeneous or near homogeneous concentrations of total phosphorus and inorganic nitrogen can occur at any time of the year throughout the lake. Total phosphorus concentrations did not increase during the year or during the study period. On the other hand total inorganic nitrogen concentrations did show an annual cycle and were highest in the spring and lowest in late summer or fall. During periods of large releases of water, the more soluble total inorganic nitrogen was flushed from the lake.
\n
The concentration of dissolved solids ranged from 139 to 292 milligrams per liter and averaged about 220 milligrams per liter. Dissolved chloride concentrations ranged from 20 to 68 milligrams per liter and averaged 43 milligrams per liter. Dissolved sulfate concentrations ranged from 30 to 130 milligrams per liter and averaged 63 milligrams per liter. The total hardness of the water ranged from 75 to 140 milligrams per liter, expressed as calcium carbonate, placing it in the moderately hard to hard (61 to 180 milligrams per liter) classification. The wells are used mostly to control lake levels and dispose of urban storm runoff. Recharge from drainage wells compensates for heavy withdrawals from the Floridan aquifer and helps maintain aquifer pressures that retard upward saltwater encroachment. Sixty-five supply wells and 21 drainage wells within a 16-mile radius of Orlando were sampled from September 1977 to June 1979. Most constituent concentrations were slightly higher in water from drainage wells than in water from supply wells. The most notable differences were in bacteria colony count and total nitrogen concentrations. With the exception of bacteria, water from drainage wells would generally meet the maximum contaminant levels established by the National Interim Primary and Proposed Secondary Drinking Water Regulations. The U.S. Geological Survey was requested to compile the available ground-water data, collect additional data, and assess the effects of the long-term development of ground water in the North Fort Hood area.
\n
Nearly all ground water in the North Fort Hood area is withdrawn from the Hensell and Hosston Members of the Travis Peak Formation. The total average annual rates of ground-water withdrawals, mostly for public supply, has steadily increased from nearly 0.5 million gallons per day during 1955 to mare than 1.5 million gallons per day during 1980.
\n
The principal effect of the long-term development of ground water in the area has been a large decline of water levels in wells. The water level in a well near Narth Fort Hood declined from a depth of 100 feet during 1943 to nearly 480 feet during 1982. The water level in a well at Gatesville was above ground level during 1898. A nearby well had a water level of 476 feet below land surface during 1982. The long-term average of water-level declines for wells in the area ranges from 8 to more than 9 feet per year.
\n
The historical confined (artesian) conditions of the principal aquifer have changed to water-table conditions in some areas as the artesian head 9 drops below the base of the confining layer due to pumping. The greater storage property of the unconfined system will decrease the rate of water-level declines. However, well yields will continue to decrease in relation to the general decline of hydraulic head in the aquifer.
\n
The ground water in the area is slightly saline and concentrations of some constituents generally exceed chemical-quality limits set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for public water supplies. To test the effects of additional irrigation development on water levels and streamflow , computer programs were developed that represent the surface-water system, soil zone, and saturated zone. A two-dimensional, finite-difference ground-water flow model of the 3,374 square-mile study area was developed and calibrated using steady-state and transient conditions. Three management alternatives were examined. First, 125,000 acre-feet of water would be diverted annually from the Platte River. During a water year in which flows are similar to those in 1957, months of zero streamflow at Grand Island increased from the historical 2, to 7. After 5 years of such low flows, in 36 nodes (997.4 acres per node) water levels declined more than 5 feet, with a maximum decline of 10.7 feet. A second alternative would allow no new ground-water development after 1980. The third alternative would allow irrigable but unirrigated land to be developed at an annual rate of 2, 5, and 8 percent and to apply irrigation water at 80, 100, and 120 percent of consumptive irrigation requirements. The maximum projected declines by 2020 are 119 and 139 feet, respectively, for the second and third alternatives. Two separate sets of esitmating equations were developed for determining mean annual runoff: one for perennial streams and one for ephemeral and intermittent streams. Data from 29 gaged sites on perennial streams and 21 gaged sites on ephemeral and intermittent streams were used in these analyses. Data from 78 gaged sites were used in the peak-flow analyses. Southeastern Montana was divided into three regions and separate multiple-regression equations for each region were developed that relate channel dimensions to peak discharge having recurrence intervals of 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 years. Channel-geometery relations were developed using measurements of the active-channel width and bankfull width. Active-channel width and bankfull width were the most significant channel features for estimating mean annual runoff for al types of streams. Use of this method requires that onsite measurements be made of channel width. The standard error of estimate for predicting mean annual runoff ranged from about 38 to 79 percent. The standard error of estimate relating active-channel width or bankfull width to peak flow ranged from about 37 to 115 percent. Calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate ions predominate in the more dilute ground and surface water. Thermal waters from springs and wells have concentrations of 900 milligrams per liter or more and are characterized by high concentrations of sodium and sulfate. Attempts to account for the origin of the hot springs on the basis of mixing relations and isotopic analyses were inconclusive; the springs may represent mixtures of thermal and nonthermal water which are altered by gases rising from sources beneath the caldera floor. Annual recharge to deep aquifers beneath the caldera is probably in the range 2,500 to 6,500 acre-feet. Observations in a Geological Survey drill hole suggest that part of the water may flow to aquifers at depths as much as 1,900 feet beneath the caldera floor. Potential recharge to a postulated geothermal reservoir probably is extremely small. Flow in the aquifer is from the boundaries of the aquifer with the Tipton till plain toward the streams and major pumping centers in the aquifer. A two-dimensional, finite-difference model of the outwash aquifer was calibrated to water levels of October 6 to 10, 1980 and used to estimate availability of water in the aquifer. A drawdown limit of 50-percent saturated thickness applied to 78 simulated-pumping wells assumed to be 1 foot in diameter produced 97 cubic feet per second from the outwash aquifer. Streamflow reductions caused by 97 cubic feet per second simulated pumpage and constant-flux boundaries were estimated to be 85 cubic feet per second in the White River and 12 cubic feet per second in Fall Creek. In comparison, the 7-day, 10-year low flows were 83 cubic feet per second in the White River near Nora and 23 cubic feet per second in Fall Creek at Millersville. Simulated pumpage of 115 cubic feet per second and constant-flux boundaries produced streamflow reductions of 101 cubic feet per second on the White River and 13 cubic feet per second on Fall Creek.
