To accomplish this objective, of water flow in the aquifers and two intervening confining layers was constructed from existing data. A steady-state model was calibrated and evaluated using a parameter-estimation procedure. The digital model simulates horizontal flow in the middle (Kootenai) aquifer and vertical leakage through the overlying and underlying confining layers. The top and bottom aquifers are used as constant-head boundaries to aid in simulating vertical leakage. Transmissivity for the aquifer obtained from the calibrated model ranges from 137 to 364 ft super 2/d. Recharge in the form of precipitation on the outcrop is about 2% of total precipitation (5.44 ft super 3/s). The other component of net recharge is 32.48 ft super 3/s of vertical leakage from the Swift aquifer. The cumulative rate of discharge from all known wells completed in the aquifer is about 0.84 ft super 3/s. Other components of net discharge are 1.83 ft super 3/s of underflow and 35.25 ft super 3/s of vertical leakage to the Colorado aquifers. Estimates of vertical hydraulic conductivity are 2.15 x 10- super 2 ft/d for the lower confining layer, and 3.16 x 10- super 3 and 1.33 x 10- super 4 ft/d for the upper confining layer. The quadrangle is underlain by Precambrian metavolcanic, metasedimentary, plutonic, and dike rocks. Metavolcanic rocks consist of metamorphosed basalt and andesite with minor dacite and rhyolite and underlie three discontinuous northwest-trending belts. Metasedimentary rocks are confined to small areas underlain by quartzite, metasandstone, marble, and calc-silicate rock. \r\n\r\nPlutonic rocks include an extensive unit of tonalite and quartz diorite and a smaller unit of diorite and quartz diorite, which occupy much of the central part of the quadrangle. A small body of diorite and gabbro and a two-part zone of tonalite gneiss are also present. All of these plutonic rocks are assigned to the An Nimas batholith. \r\n\r\nYounger plutonic rocks include extensive graphic granite and rhyolite in the northeastern part of the quadrangle and several smaller bodies of granitic rocks and of gabbro. \r\n\r\nThe metavolcanic rocks commonly have strong foliation with northwest strike and steep to vertical dip. Diorite and quartz diorite are sheared and brecciated and apparently syntectonic. Tonalite and quartz diorite are both foliate and nonfoliate and were intruded in episodes both preceding and following shearing. The granitic rocks and gabbro are post-tectonic. \r\n\r\nTrends of faults and dikes are mostly related to the Najd faulting episode. \r\n\r\nRadiometric ages, mostly from adjacent quadrangles, suggest that the An Nimas batholith is 835 to 800 Ma, gabbro and granite, except the graphic granite and rhyolite unit, are about 640 to 615 Ma, and the graphic granite and rhyolite 575 to 565 Ma old.\r\n\r\nMetavolcanic rocks similar to those hosting copper and gold mineralization in the Wadi Shuwas mining district adjacent to the southwestern part of the quadrangle are abundant. An ancient copper mine was discovered at the edge of the tonalite gneiss belt east of Wadi Ranyah. Granite and gabbro have economic potential as building stone.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83448","usgsCitation":"Greene, R.C., 1983, Reconnaissance geology of the Thaniyah Quadrangle, sheet 20/42 C, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-448, ii, 25 p., 1 over-size sheet, maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83448.","productDescription":"ii, 25 p., 1 over-size sheet, maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142875,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0448/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36865,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0448/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36866,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0448/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a6ce4b07f02db63ec01","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Greene, Robert C.","contributorId":36108,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Greene","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159319,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The impacts of subsidence are potentially severe in terms of damage to surface utility lines and structures, changes in surface-water and ground-water conditions, and effects on vegetation and animals. Although subsidence cannot be eliminated, it can be reduced or controlled in areas where deformation of the ground surface would produce dangerous or costly effects. \r\n\r\nSubsidence prediction is highly developed in Europe where there are comparatively uniform mining conditions and a long history of field measurements. Much of this mining has been carried out beneath crowded urban and industrial areas where accurate predictions have facilitated use of the surface and reduced undesirable impacts. Concerted efforts to understand subsidence processes in the United States are recent. Empirical methods of subsidence analysis and prediction based on local conditions seem better suited to the current state of knowledge of the varied geologic and topographic conditions in domestic coal mining regions than do theoretical/mathematical approaches. In order to develop broadly applicable subsidence prediction methods and models for the United States, more information is needed on magnitude and timing of ground movements and geologic properties.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir876","usgsCitation":"Lee, F.T., and Abel, J., 1983, Subsidence from underground mining; environmental analysis and planning considerations: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 876, iv, 28 p. :ill., maps ;26 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir876.","productDescription":"iv, 28 p. :ill., maps ;26 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":124669,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1983/0876/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":30794,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1983/0876/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db699ae9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lee, Fitzhugh T.","contributorId":82272,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lee","given":"Fitzhugh","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147500,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Abel, John F.","contributorId":84351,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Abel","given":"John F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147501,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Surface waters are generally cold and clear, have significant wilderness recreation values, and provide outstanding salmon habitat. Late summer unit runoff ranged from 2.3 to 8.1 cubic feet per second per square mile. Stream width increased with discharge from about 20 feet on the tributaries to more than 300 feet on the Togiak River near its mouth. Mean depth increased with discharge downstream direction from about 1 to more than 4 feet. Mean velocity ranged between 1 and 4 feet per second and bore little relation to discharge. Late winter unit discharge for sites having little or no upstream lake storage was about 0.5 cubic foot per second per square mile. For the remaining sites, values ranged from 0.8 to 1.4 cubic feet per second per square mile. Unit runoff of maximum evident floods ranged from 12.9 to 50 cubic feet per second per square mile. Field measurements of water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, alkalinity and specific conductance indicated that water quality seems much the same throughout the basin and is influenced by the major lakes. Benthic invertebrates indicate a reasonably diverse fauna with midge larvae representing the largest percentage of all organisms found at most sites. In response to this need, a sampling approach was developed to estimate water pumped for irrigation on the High Plains during 1980. Pumpage was computed by combining application estimates with mapped irrigated-acreage information. Irrigation application (inches of water applied) was measured at 480 sites in 15 counties in the High Plains during the 1980 growing season. The relationship between calculated Blaney-Criddle irrigation demand and measured application was used to estimate application for unsampled areas of the High Plains. Application estimates multiplied by irrigated-acreate estimates, compiled from Landsat-satellite imagery, yielded the volume of ground water pumped for irrigation. The estimate of ground water pumped for irrigation in the High Plains during 1980 and 18,902,000 acre-feet for 13 ,715,000 irrigated areas. The sampled application data were evaluated for significant trends. The application was greater for crops requiring more water such as corn and hay and less for crops such as sorghum, grain, and cotton. The data showed greater application for flood-irrigated systems than for sprinkler-irrigation systems. Areas of the High Plains with thin saturated thickness tended to have a smaller average discharge per well, fewer irrigated acres per well, and a predominance of crops requiring less water crops. Imagery was used to identify the type and extent of vegetative cover on strip-mined lands and the extent and success of reclamation practices. Drainage patterns, point sources of acid mine drainage, and recharge areas for underground mines were located for onsite inspection. Comparison of these interpretations with water-quality data illustrated differences between the eastern and western parts of the Cherry Creek basin. Contamination in the eastern part is due largely to circulation of water from unreclaimed strip mines and collapse features through the network of underground mines and subsequent discharge of acidic drainage through seeps. Contamination in the western part is primarily caused by runoff and seepage from strip-mined lands in which surfaces have frequently been graded and limed but are generally devoid of mature stands of soil-anchoring vegetation. The successful use of aerial photography in the study of Cherry Creek basin indicates the potential of using remote-sensing techniques in studies of other coal-mined regions.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri834007","usgsCitation":"Kenny, J.F., and McCauley, J.R., 1983, Application of remote-sensing techniques to hydrologic studies in selected coal-mined areas of southeastern Kansas: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 83-4007, Report: iv, 33 p.; 1 Plate: 16.01 × 18.60 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri834007.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 33 p.; 1 Plate: 16.01 × 18.60 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":56824,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4007/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":394124,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35653.htm"},{"id":56825,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4007/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":123358,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4007/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Kansas","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -94.9720,\n              37.158\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.5730,\n              37.158\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.5730,\n              37.333\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.9720,\n              37.333\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.9720,\n              37.158\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac6e4b07f02db67a8ad","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kenny, J. Data collection included geologic sampling and coring, borehole geophysical logging, packer testing, water-level measuring, water-quality sampling, and aquifer testing. In the study area, the Tertiary limestone aquifer system is about 1,300 feet thick and is confined and overlain by about 610 feet of clastic sediments. The aquifer system consists of limestone, dolomite, and minor evaporites and has high porosity and permeability. A 4-day continuous discharge aquifer test was conducted, from which a transmissivity of about 1 million feet squared per day and a storage coefficient of 0.0001 were calculated. Water from the upper part of the aquifer is of a calcium bicarbonate type. The deeper highly mineralized zone produces a sodium bicarbonate type water in which concentrations of magnesium, sulfate, chloride, sodium, and some trace metals increase with depth. About 2.89 million acre-feet of the water was diverted above Granite Reef Dam, and about 5.45 million acre-feet was released into the normally dry channel of the Salt River. The total streamflow losses in the 74-mile reach between Granite Reef and Gillespie Dams were at least 474,000 acre-feet. Most of the water infiltrated into the permeable alluvial deposits along the Sal and Gila Rivers and increased the amount of ground water in storage. From February 1978 to May 1980, ground-water levels in 169 wells that tap the alluvial deposits in the Salt River Valley rose an average of 35.5 feet. The rise in ground-water levels was a direct result of the infiltrating floodwaters and a marked decrease in ground-water pumpage. Estimated inflows to the aquifer during the 1981 water year were 16.4 cubic feet per second from precipitation directly on the aquifer, 11.2 cubic feet per second from till covered uplands adjacent to the aquifer, and 1.4 cubic feet per second from surface-water leakage. Outflows from the aquifer were 26.7 cubic feet per second to surface water and 2.3 cubic feet per second to wells. A finite-difference ground-water flow model was used to simulate conditions observed in the aquifer during 1981. Model conditions observed in the aquifer during 1981. Model simulations indicate that a 50 percent reduction of average 1981 recharge to the aquifer would cause water level declines of up to 20 feet in some areas. Model simulations of increased pumping at a high yield well in the northern part of the aquifer indicate that resulting changes in the water table will not be sufficient to intercept groundwater contaminated by a sludge disposal site. Water in the aquifer is low in dissolved solids (average for 38 samples was 67 mg/L), slightly acidic and soft. Ground-water contamination has occurred near a sludge-disposal site and in the vicinity of a sanitary landfill. Dissolved solids in ground water near the sludge disposal site were as much as ten times greater than average background values for the aquifer. The absence of exceptionally high values of cobalt and arsenic, the nearly lognormal distribution of cobalt values, and the lack of correlation between the highest values of cobalt and arsenic were unanticipated results that do not support the use of this sampling technique. However, highest values of several metals, including cobalt, were associated with an identified area of cobalt mineralization, and high cobalt was present near a second area in which cobalt mineralization is suspected. Although probably mostly reflecting the geochemistry of unexposed ultramafic rocks, the association of these metals with mineralization shows that this type of sampling can independently locate areas of known or potential cobalt mineralization.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83383","usgsCitation":"Foose, M.P., 1983, A preliminary evaluation of stream sediment sampling for the detection of cobalt mineralization in the Bou Azzer District, Morocco: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-383, 22 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83383.","productDescription":"22 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142635,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0383/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36443,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0383/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1fe4b07f02db6aacfc","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Foose, M. This study has been conducted to analyze the historical and technical efforts which have been used by three geophysical contractors employing a wide variety of techniques ranging from the most simple to very elaborate 3-D surveys. In each case elaborate noise studies were conducted, and based upon their evaluation parameters were chosen for multifold CDP recording. In every case, the signal-to-noise ratio was such that no reflections were discernable. Since the reflections cannot be separated from the noise even using very elaborate noise suppression techniques and up to 384 fold multiplicity it is apparent that in this volcanic terrain reflection surveys, can not work.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/ofr83912","collaboration":"Prepared for Nevada Operations Office, U.S. Department of Energy ","usgsCitation":"McGovern, T.F., Introduction by Pankratz, L.W., and Ackermann, H., 1983, An Evaluation of Seismic Reflection Studies in the Yucca Mountain Area, Nevada Test Site: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-912, viii, 59 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83912.","productDescription":"viii, 59 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":146849,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0912/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":43701,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0912/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adce4b07f02db686823","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McGovern, Thomas F.","contributorId":41437,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McGovern","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":170196,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Introduction by Pankratz, L. Geochemical analyses reveal that organic carbon contents in ore samples from all three sand units are uniformly low (most are less than 0.01 percent). Vanadium (ranging from 0.0002 to 0.19 percent) and sulfur (ranging from <0.01 to 0.74 percent) typically show positive correlations with uranium; however, vanadium contents rarely exceed those of uranium in ore samples. Although no systematic relationship of either selenium or molybdenum to uranium is evident, some ore samples contain anomalously high concentrations of either of these elements. \r\n\r\nGeochemically, the ore deposits of the Church Rock area contrast greatly with primary (tabular) uranium orebodies in the GUR which contain abundant organic carbon and greater amounts of vanadium and sulfur. \r\n\r\nThese differences and radiometric age determinations strongly suggest that the Church Rock ores formed as a result of the redistribution of uranium from preexisting uranium deposits within the last 1 m.y. However, the Church Rock deposits differ geochemically from redistributed orebodies in the Westwater Canyon Member elsewhere in the GUR. Specifically, redistributed orebodies in the Ambrosia Lake district, which are comparable in contents of uranium and organic carbon with the Church Rock deposits, are characterized by vanadium contents typically higher than those of uranium. Similarly, sulfur contents in the redistributed deposits of the Ambrosia Lake district are greater than those found in the Church Rock ores. In addition, anomalously high concentrations of molybdenum have rarely been found in other redistributed orebodies of the GUR.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83194","usgsCitation":"Fishman, N.S., and Reynolds, R.L., 1983, Geochemical characteristics of the Church Rock 1 and 1 East uranium deposits, Grants uranium region, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-194, 28 p. ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83194.","productDescription":"28 p. ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141607,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0194/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36404,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0194/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae5bf","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fishman, Neil S.","contributorId":106464,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fishman","given":"Neil","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158402,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Reynolds, Richard L. 0000-0002-4572-2942 rreynolds@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4572-2942","contributorId":441,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reynolds","given":"Richard","email":"rreynolds@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":271,"text":"Federal Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":158401,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
