The model was calibrated by matching observed and simulated water-level changes for December 1977 through March 1980. Drawdowns for three different hypothetical pumping rates are simulated with the calibrated flow model. An increase in the pumping rate from the steady-state rate of 10 cubic feet per second to 48 cubic feet per second results in water-level declines of 10 to 20 feet near the area of the pumping wells. Declines of 20 to 40 feet result when the pumping rate is increased to 70 cubic feet per second, and a simulated pumping well goes dry when the combined pumping is increased to 94 cubic feet per second. For the first two cases, steady-flow conditions are reached after 12 years of pumping; infiltration through riverbeds accounts for 28 to 33% of the pumpage.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/wri834022","usgsCitation":"Razem, A., 1983, Simulations of non-steady flow in a glacial outwash aquifer, southern Franklin County, Ohio: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 83-4022, iv, 21 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri834022.","productDescription":"iv, 21 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":158906,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4022/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":58133,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4022/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f6e4b07f02db5f1a6d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Razem, A. These constituents (as well as dissolved solids, hardness, and magnesium) each correlate well with specific conductance, whereas chloride, sodium, and nitrate each do not. Specific conductance ranges from 73 to 820 micromhos per centimeter throughout the study area. Short-term variations in water quality in the Spokane aquifer are generally greater than long-term variations. \r\n\r\nVertical variations in concentration of chemical constituents occurred in four of 15 wells used to sample the upper 50 feet of the aquifer along several cross sections. Changes in water quality from one cross section to another could not be directly related to land-use activities. \r\n\r\nA digital model was developed and used to simulate solute transport of conservative ions in the Spokane aquifer. Specifically, the model was used to estimate the impact of the chloride ion from recharge through septic tanks and from irrigation on the water quality of the aquifer. Analysis shows that the estimated impact on the aquifer from these two source loadings was less than a 1-milligram-per-liter increase throughout approximately 80 percent of the aquifer, but increases averaging about 3 milligrams per liter occurred in some peripheral areas. Various water-quality-management schemes based on manmade or natural stresses can be tested with the model.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82769","usgsCitation":"Vaccaro, J.J., and Bolke, E., 1983, Evaluation of water-quality characteristics of part of the Spokane Aquifer, Washington and Idaho, using a solute-transport digital model: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-769, vi, 75 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82769.","productDescription":"vi, 75 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":145736,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0769/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39368,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0769/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f7e4b07f02db5f1cce","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Vaccaro, J. Sand-wave amplitudes in the survey area ranged from 1-11 m although most were 5-7 m. Wavelengths were not constant as the crests were sinuous and in places, even bifurcated. The sand waves are asymmetrical with their steepest sides facing northwest; however, gradients of their steep sides mostly are 4?-10? which is well below the angle of repose for sand in water. Sand waves tended to have greater relief and a sharper asymmetry during the survey in September than during those in June or April. \r\n\r\nDuring the survey period the sand waves moved but the direction and rate of motion was variable. Even along an individual sand wave some parts moved as much as 60 m between surveys while other parts apparently remained stationary. The sand waves were asymmetrical, but movement was not consistently in the direction that the steep sides faced. Along the same sand wave, parts moved to the northwest while other parts moved to the southeast. Despite the complex pattern of sand motion, the mean displacement of the sand waves was below the resolution of the survey technique; to resolve it, a longer survey is needed.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83746","usgsCitation":"Twichell, D.C., 1983, Sand-wave movement on Little Georges Bank: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-746, ii, 22 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83746.","productDescription":"ii, 22 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":146581,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0746/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39361,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0746/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ee4b07f02db5fdae2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Twichell, David C.","contributorId":37730,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Twichell","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":163234,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Thermal waters at Drakesbad and in Little Hot Springs Valley, hot spring localities characterized by neutral pH and low Cl containing water, may have equilibrated in shallow aquifers so that temperatures estimated by both the Na-K-Ca and Na-Li geothermometers approach the measured spring temperatures of 65? to 95?C. Waters rich in chloride (>2000 mg/L), such as those at Growler Hot Spring and Morgan Hot Springs, situated south of LVNP, are the most appropriate springs for liquid chemical geothermometry and indicate subsurface temperatures between 220? and 230?C. The chemical and thermal characteristics of these springs may result either from boiling at depth and subsequent mixing with meteoric water or from conductive cooling during lateral flow. In either case ~220? to 230?C thermal water probably originates inside LVNP and flows south to Morgan Hot Springs.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83311","usgsCitation":"Thompson, J., 1983, Chemical analyses of thermal and nonthermal springs in Lassen Volcanic National Park and vicinity, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-311, 27 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83311.","productDescription":"27 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144142,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0311/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39277,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0311/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e1e4b07f02db5e496d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Thompson, J. In marine, estuarine, and riverine food webs, they occupy a level between zooplankton, their principal food, and piscivores.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","usgsCitation":"Pardue, G.B., 1983, Habitat Suitability Index Models: Alewife and blueback herring: FWS/OBS 82/10.58, vi, 22 p.","productDescription":"vi, 22 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":181766,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a81e4b07f02db649e1f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pardue, Garland B.","contributorId":53014,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pardue","given":"Garland","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":255600,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

It presents 18 charts giving newly developed relations for acceleration, velocity, and duration versus site earthquake intensity for near- and far-field hard and soft sites and earthquakes having magnitudes above and below 7. The material for this report is based on procedures developed at the Waterways Experiment Station. Although these procedures are suggested primarily for large dams, they may also be applicable for other facilities. \r\n\r\nBecause no standard procedure exists for selecting earthquake motions in engineering design of large dams, a number of precautions are presented to guide users. The selection of earthquake motions is dependent on which one of two types of engineering analyses are performed. A pseudostatic analysis uses a coefficient usually obtained from an appropriate contour map; whereas, a dynamic analysis uses either accelerograms assigned to a site or specified respunse spectra. Each type of analysis requires significantly different input motions. All selections of design motions must allow for the lack of representative strong motion records, especially near-field motions from earthquakes of magnitude 7 and greater, as well as an enormous spread in the available data. Limited data must be projected and its spread bracketed in order to fill in the gaps and to assure that there will be no surprises. Because each site may have differing special characteristics in its geology, seismic history, attenuation, recurrence, interpreted maximum events, etc., as integrated approach gives best results. Each part of the site investigation requires a number of decisions. In some cases, the decision to use a 'least ork' approach may be suitable, simply assuming the worst of several possibilities and testing for it. Because there are no standard procedures to follow, multiple approaches are useful. For example, peak motions at a site may be obtained from several methods that involve magnitude of earthquake, distance from source, and corresponding motions; or, alternately, peak motions may be assigned from other correlations based on earthquake intensity. Various interpretations exist to account for duration, recurrence, effects of site conditions, etc. Comparison of the various interpretations can be very useful. Probabilities can be assigned; however, they can present very serious problems unless appropriate care is taken when data are extrapolated beyond their data base. In making deterministic judgments, probabilistic data can provide useful guidance in estimating the uncertainties of the decision. \r\n\r\nThe selection of a design ground motion for large dams is based in the end on subjective judgments which should depend, to an important extent, on the consequences of failure. Usually, use of a design value of ground motion representing a mean plus one standard deviation of possible variation in the mean of the data puts one in a conservative position. If failure presents no hazard to life, lower values of design ground motion may be justified, providing there are cost benefits and the risk is acceptable to the owner. Where a large hazard to life exists (i.e., a dam above an urbanized area) one may wish to use values of design ground motion that approximate the very worst case. The selection of a design ground motion must be appropriate for its particular set of circumstances.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83636","usgsCitation":"Krinitzsky, E., and Marcuson, W.F., 1983, Principles for selecting earthquake motions in engineering design of large dams: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-636, 54 p. ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83636.","productDescription":"54 p. ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141195,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0636/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37688,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0636/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa7e4b07f02db666fe9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Krinitzsky, E.L.","contributorId":58269,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Krinitzsky","given":"E.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160476,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Marcuson, William F.","contributorId":21547,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Marcuson","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160475,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
