Description of net circulation and mixing over a few days to a few months illustrates best the interactions of major components. The discharge of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta into Suisun Bay is approximately 90% of the freshwater inflow to San Francisco Bay. Annual delta discharge is characterized by a winter season of high runoff and a summer season of low runoff. For the period 1956 to 1985 the mean of monthly discharges exceeded 1,000 cu m/s (35,000 cu ft/s) for the months of December through April, whereas for July through October, it was < 400 cu m/s (14,000 cu ft/s). The months of November, May, and June commonly were transition months between these seasons. Large year-to-year deviations from this annual pattern have occurred frequently. Much less is known about the ocean-bay exchange process. Net exchanges depend on net seaward flow in the bay, tidal amplitude , and longshore coastal currents, but exchanges have not yet been measured successfully. The bay is composed of a northern reach, which is strongly influenced by delta discharge, and South Bay, a tributary estuary which responds to conditions in Central Bay. In the northern reach net circulation is characterized by the river-induced seaward flow and a resulting gravitational circulation in the channels, and by a tide and wind-induced net horizontal circulation. During low delta discharges South Bay has nearly the same salinity as Central Bay and is characterized by tide and wind-induced net horizontal circulation. In the northern reach a nontidal current null zone moves rapidly seaward in response to increases in delta discharge, and after runoff events returns landward over a few months. During the low-discharge period the northern reach achieves an approximate salt balance in two to three months. When gravitational circulation penetrates these zones during high discharges, the mean residence time probably is reduced to less than a month. The data for southwest Florida include continuous or daily discharge for 85 streams, periodic discharge for 21 streams, miscellaneous discharge for 7 streams, continuous or daily stage for 26 streams, periodic stage for 10 streams, peak discharge for 20 streams, and peak stage for 1 stream; continuous elevations for 30 lakes and periodic elevations for 28 lakes; continuous ground-water levels for 25 wells, periodic ground-water levels for 146 wells, and miscellaneous water-level measurements for 722 wells; quality-of-water for 106 surface-water sites and 265 wells.

This report reviews the occurrence and distribution of manmade organic compounds in the surface waters of the United States. On the basis of their aqueous solubilities, nonionic organic compounds partition themselves between water, dissolved organic matter, particulate organic matter, and the lipid reservoirs of aquatic organisms. Ionized organic compounds can be absorbed to sediments, thereby reducing their aqueous concentrations. Transformation processes of photolysis, hydrolysis, biodegradation, and volatilization can attenuate organic compounds, and attenuation rate commonly follow a first-order kinetic process.

Eight groups of manmade organic compounds are discussed:

For each compound group, data pertaining to use, production, and properties are presented and discussed. Processes that influence that the environmental fate of each group, as determined primarily through laboratory studies, are reviewed, and important fate processes are identified. Environmental concentrations of compounds from each group in water, biota, and sediment are given to demonstrate representative values for comparison to concentrations determined during ongoing research. Finally, where sufficient data exist, regional and temporal contamination trends in the United States are discussed.

The Lower Cretaceous J sandstone of the Dakota Group is present in the Denver basin in eastern Colorado, southeastern Wyoming, and southwestern Nebraska. Deposited during a regression of the Cretaceous epicontinental sea, this informally named unit is composed primarily of sandstone and shale of deltaic and near shore-marine origin. The J sandstone can be divided into an upper transgressive sand, a middle marginal-marine and deltaic facies, and a lower prodelta sequence (Clark, 1978). The depth from the surface to the top of the J sandstone increases from about 4,000 ft on the gently-dipping eastern flank of the basin to more than 8,000 ft at the basin ax is near the steeply-dipping western flank.

Porosity data compiled in this study were determined from J sandstone cores from 134 widely spaced boreholes. Porosity in areas of poor core coverage was determined from neutron density logs from an additional 20 boreholes ( corrected to core average grain density). Median, rather than average, porosity was used in order to minimize the statistical effect of anomalously high and low porosity values. Thirty-five oil companies and independent operators supplied core porosity data. Core porosities were determined by means of helium porosimetry, primarily by Core Laboratories of Denver, Colo.

Maps of the potentiometric surface of the Upper Floridan aquifer in west-central Florida are prepared semiannually by the U.S. Geological Survey. Maps for May and September show, respectively, the potentiometric surface of the normally expected annual low and high water level conditions. Potentiometric surface maps have been prepared for January 1964, May 1969, May 1971 to 1974, and for each May and September since 1975. The potentiometric surface of the Upper Floridan aquifer is shown for September 1987. Most of the water level data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey during the period of September 14-18. Supplemental data were collected by other agencies and companies. This map represents water level conditions near the end of the summer rainy season when groundwater withdrawals for agricultural use are low and therefore, when the potentiometric surface is near its highest level for the year.
