The saturated thickness of the aquifer in most of the area, but not including the alluvium ranges from 500 to 3000 ft. The maximum saturated thickness of the alluvium penetrated by test holes was 63 ft. The water-table contours and depths to water are based primarily on groundwater-level measurements made during 1982 in 104 wells, most of which are located south of the Sweetwater River. Land-surface altitudes of springs and water-surface altitudes along the Sweetwater River and perennial reaches of creeks flowing northward from the Green and Ferris Mountains also were used as control for mapping the water table. The perennial reaches shown on the map are assumed hydraulically connected with the water table. They were identified from streamflow gain-and-loss measurements made during April and May 1982. ILWAS was established in 1977 to determine why these lakes differ in pH when all receive equal amounts of acidic atmospheric deposition. Woods Lake is acidic (pH ranges from 4 to 5), Panther Lake is neutral (pH ranges from 5 to 7.5), and Sagamore Lake is intermediate (pH ranges from 5 to 6). The data tabulated herein include discharge at the three lake outlets and in a tributary to each lake; lake-water stage at each lake; chemical quality of lake water, including total concentrations of zinc, iron, manganese, and lead, at each lake outlet and at Lost Brook (a tributary to Sagamore Lake); groundwater stage from 29 wells; major ion concentrations of groundwater from 22 of these wells; temperature of soil from three depths at one site in each watershed; soil-moisture tension at three depths at eight sites - four in the neutral-lake basin, three in the acidic-lake basin , and one in the intermediate-lake basin; and average snowpack depths and water equivalents at approximately 20 snow-course sites in each basin for three sampling periods during the 1979-80 winter. Concentrations ranging from 200 to 300 micrograms per liter in the Madison River near the park boundary are diluted downstream by tributary inflows to the Madison and Missouri Rivers. However, significant amount of arsenic are present in the water of the Missouri River as it enter Fort Peck Lake. A monitoring network of 24 stations was operated during 1985 and 1986 in the upper Missouri River basin to measure arsenic concentrations and arsenic discharges. Additional monitoring at nine stations was conducted during March to July 1987 to supplement the data base. This report presents data acquired from the 1987 monitoring period. Tyler Bend is on the Buffalo River about 1.5 miles upstream from U.S. Highway 65. The National Park Service is developing several recreational park sites along this scenic river. The magnitude, frequency, duration and velocities of floods are primary factors needed for establishing guidelines for developing facilities and managing park sites. The Park Service plans to develop park facilities at Tyler Bend and needs flood information at this site. This report provides information on the 100-, 75-, 50-, 30-, 20-, 10-, and 5-year floods on the Buffalo River at Tyler Bend. It was prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the National Park Service and is based on data collected during the December 1982 flood, gaging station data for the Buffalo River near St. Joe, Arkansas and a Statewide flood-frequency report. Sensitivities were derived by direct differentiation of closed form solutions for each of the odel, and by a time integral method for two of the models. Models are based on the advection-dispersion equation and include adsorption and first-order chemical decay. Boundary conditions considered are: a constant step input of solute, constant flux input of solute, and exponentially decaying input of solute at the upstream boundary. A zero flux is assumed at the downstream boundary. Initial conditions include a constant and spatially varying distribution of solute. One model simulates the mixing of solute in an observation well from individual layers in a multilayer aquifer system. Computer programs produce output files compatible with graphics software in which sensitivities are plotted as a function of either time or space. Sediment and hydraulic data obtained from October 1984 to September 1985 (water year 1985) at selected sites on the Susitna, Chulitna, Talkectna and Yentna Rivers are summarized. Sediment data include measurements of suspended sediment and bedload discharge, and analyses of particle size distribution of suspended sediment, bedload, and bed material; hydraulic data include measurements of channel width, average depth and velocity of water, and water surface slope. Relations between water and sediment discharge are developed for each site. Sediment loads for water year 1985 were estimated for the Yentna , Chulitna, and Talkectna Rivers and for three sites on the Susitna River. About 31 million tons of sediment were transported to the Susitna River at Susitna Station during the year. The Yentna and Chulitna Rivers contributed about 21 million tons of sediment to the Susitna River. This is underlain by less permeable crystalline rock that limits the downward movement of water. Up to 5 feet of Holocene (or perhaps Pleistocene) alluvium consisting of clay and silt was deposited above the Trenton gravel, but much of the surficial material is dredge spoil, mostly sand and silt from the Delaware River.</p>\n<p>Normally, ground water discharges to the Delaware River and Neshaminy Creek. However, because the Trenton gravel is confined by the alluvium and is hydraulically connected to the Delaware River throughout its entire thickness due to channel dredging, hydraulic-head variations in the river are readily transmitted to wells. Thus, flow is toward the Delaware River and Neshaminy Creek at low tide, but the river and and creek recharge the aquifer as the tide rises.</p>\n<p>In September 1981 and October 1983, infertile dredge spoil from the Delaware River at Neshaminy State Park was mixed with composted sewage sludge and seeded to grasses to produce a soil product that has not adversely affected ground-water quality as of March 1985. Analyses for pH, specific conductance, nutrients, and heavy metals in ground water at the beginning of the study indicate that the chemistry of the ground water in the dredge spoil at the site differs from that in the Trenton gravel.</p>\n<p>Analyses of ground-water samples collected after the first two sludge applications (120 tons per acre and 450 tons per acre), indicate that no significant change occurred in the chemistry of the samples from the Trenton gravel, whereas organic nitrogen increased temporarily in ground water from the dredge spoil 6 months after the larger of the two sludge applications, but quickly returned to background levels.
