A correlation spectrometer, orCOSPEC, was used to measure sulfur dioxide in Mount St.Helens' plume. The upward-looking COSPEC was mounted in afixed-wing aircraft and flown below and at right angles to theplume. Typically, three to six traverses were made underneaththe plume to determine the SO2 burden (concentration xpathlength) within a cross-section of the plume. Knowing theburden along with the plume width and plume velocity (assumedto be the same as ambient wind speed), we could then calculatethe emission rate of SO2. The use of correlation spectroscopyfor determining the sulfur dioxide output of volcanoes is wellestablished and the technique has been discussed in detail bya number of investigators (Malinconico, 1979; Casadevall andothers, 1981; Stoiber and others, 1983).Carbon dioxide in the Mount St. Helens plume was measured byan infrared spectrometer tuned to the 4.26 um CO2 absorptionband. An external sample tube was attached to the fuselage ofa twin-engine aircraft to deliver outside air to the gas cellof the spectrometer. The aircraft was then flown at severaldifferent elevations through the plume at right angles toplume trajectory to define plume area and carbon dioxideconcentration in a vertical cross-section of the plume. Results of these evaluations are presented in tabular form. Also presented are tables and graphs summarizing the analytical data provided by each laboratory for each analyte in the eight standard reference samples. Water samples are filtered to remove suspended particulate material and passed through a polystyrene divinylbenzene-packed cartridge by a vacuum-extraction system.  The target analytes subsequently are eluted with acetonitrile.  A high-performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) equipped with a photodiode-array detector is used for sample analysis.  Analytes are separated on an octadecylsilane column using a methanol, water, and acetonitrile gradient elution.  The compounds 2,4- and 2,6-dinitrotoluene are separated through an independent, isocratic elution.  Method detection limits, on the basis of a 1-liter sample size, range from 0.11 to 0.32 microgram per liter. Recoveries averaged from 71 to 101 percent for 13 analytes in one set of HPLC-grade water fortified at about 1 microgram per liter. Most of the sites for data collection were in and around the upper and lower sump of Tule Lake, in the Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge, and along major drains in Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge. The physical and chemical data consist of particle-size determinations and concentrations of carbon, mercury, arsenic, chlorophenoxy acid, and organochlorine, organophosphate, and carbamate pesticides in bottom sediment; and concentrations of organophosphate, carbamate, and pyrethroid pesticides, major and trace inorganic constituents, nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic carbon in water. Continuous dissolved oxygen, pH, specific conduc- tance, and temperature data from selected sites in 1991 and 1992 are presented in graphical form to summarize the diel water-quality conditions. Average precipitation values ranged from 103 percent of normal in northwestern Wisconsin to 150 percent of normal in southwestern Wisconsin (Pamela Naber Knox, UW-Extension, Geological and Natural History Survey, written commun., 1993).</p>\n<p>Runoff was variable for rivers throughout the State ranging from 99 percent in northcentral Wisconsin to 278 percent in southwestern Wisconsin. Departure of runoff in the 1993 water year from long-term average runoff is shown in figure 4, along with long-term average runoff for the period 1951-80. Runoff was lowest (99 percent of the average annual runoff from 1936-93) for the Wisconsin River at Rainbow Lake near Lake Tomahawk. Runoff was highest (278 percent of the average annual runoff from 1939-93) for the Pecatonica River at Darlington. The average annual runoff for the 1993 water year was the maximum for the period of record at 33 long-term stations (more than 10 years of record) in the southern half of Wisconsin.</p>\n<p>A comparison of the annual discharge for the individual water years (1916-93) at the Oconto River near Gillett, Jump River at Sheldon, and Sugar River near Brodhead is shown figure 5, The comparisons of monthly and annual discharges for the 1993 water year to discharge for a 78-year base period at the same three gaging stations are shown in figure 6.</p>\n<p>Spring runoff from snowmelt and major storms, in the period March through September 1993, caused floods with discharges that equalled or exceeded those with a recurrence interval of 10 years (Krug and others, 1991) at a number of The Master Water Data Index (MWDI) of NAWDEX currently indexes the data collected by 423 organizations from nearly 500,000 sites throughout the United Stales. The utilization of new computer technologies permit the distribution of the MWDI to the public on compact disc. In addition, geographic information systems (GIS) are now available that can store and analyze these data in a spatial format. These recent innovations could increase access and add new capabilities to the MWDI. Before either of these technologies could be employed, however, a quality-assurance check of the MWDI needed to be performed. The MWDI resides on a mainframe computer in a tabular format. It was copied onto a workstation and converted to a GIS format. The GIS was used to identify errors in the MWDI and produce reports that summarized these errors. The summary reports were sent to the responsible contributing agencies along with instructions for submitting their corrections to the NAWDEX Program Office. The MWDI administrator received reports that summarized all of the errors identified. The basins included two adjacent basins in row-crop fields, a mixed land-use basin, and a forested basin. One of the row-crop fields was farmed using conservation land-management practices, including strip cropping, contour plowing, field borders, and grassed waterways. The other field was farmed using standard land- management practices, including continuous cropping, straight-row plowing, and ungrassed waterways. The sediment yield for the standard land-management basin was 2.3 times that for the conservation land-management basin, 14.1 times that for the mixed land-use basin, and 19.5 times that for the forested basin. Nutrient concentrations in surface water from the row-crop and mixed land-use basins were higher than those in surface water for the forested basin. Nutrient concentrations in soil water and ground water beneath the row-crop basins were lower than those in surface- water runoff for these basins. The lowest nutrient concentrations measured in the row-crop basins generally were in soil-water samples collected just below the root zone (3-foot depth) and in ground water. No significant differences in pesticide concentrations were identified between the surface-water runoff from the standard land-management basin and that from the conservation land-management basin. Results from the prototype project provide information needed to operate a net- work of intensive fixed station stream-monitoring sites. This report evaluates operating procedures for two NAWQA prototype sites at Maple Creek near Nickerson and the Platte River at Louisville, eastern Nebraska. Each site was sampled intensively in the spring and late summer 1992, with less intensive sampling in midsummer. In addition, multiple samples were collected during two high- flow periods at the Maple Creek site--one early and the other late in the growing season. Water-samples analyses included determination of pesticides, nutrients, major ions, suspended sediment, and measurements of physical properties. Equipment and protocols for the water-quality sampling procedures were evaluated. Operation of the prototype stream- monitoring sites included development and comparison of onsite and laboratory sample-processing proce- dures. Onsite processing was labor intensive but allowed for immediate preservation of all sampled constituents. Measurements taken at 15-minute intervals included near-surface and near-bottom specific conductance; near-surface water temperature; and near-surface, mid-depth, and near-bottom dissolved-oxygen concentrations.\r\n\r\nIn the Pamlico River estuary, salinities generally ranged from less than 0.1 to 20 parts per thousand during the period October 1991 through September 1992. Recorded water temperatures in the Pamlico River were between 3.5 and 33 degrees Celsius during the measurement period. Dissolved-oxygen concentrations ranged from less than 1 to 23 milligrams per liter.\r\n\r\nIn the Neuse River estuary, salinities ranged from 0.3 to 27 parts per thousand between October 1991 and September 1992. During the same period, recorded water temperatures in this estuary were between 4 and 34 degrees Celsius. Dissolved-oxygen concentrations ranged from less than 1 to greater than 22 milligrams per liter.\r\n\r\nDaily mean values of salinity; water temperature; dissolved-oxygen concentrations; and dissolved oxygen, percent saturation, are presented in tables and graphs. Five-day mean values of water temperature and dissolved-oxygen concentrations for day and night conditions also are presented in tables. This approach also provides a plan to determine if the abnormally high rainfall and flooding in 1993 has an effect on nitrate concentrations in 1994 in streams that flooded in 1993. The approach involves sampling 53 stream sites, 50 of which were sampled in 1989 and 1990 as part of a reconnaissance to determine the geographic and seasonal distribution of herbicides in 10 Midwestern States. Sites will be sampled twice, once prior to application of herbicides, in March or early April, and once during the first runoff event after application of herbicides. Samples will be analyzed for 11 herbicide and 2 atrazine metabolites by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Samples will also be analyzed for ESA (an alachlor metabolite), two cyanazine metabolites, and nutrients.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Changes to the manufacturers' label have decreased the maximum recommended \napplication rate for atrazine on com and sorghum by about 50 percent since the 1989-90 study. Conversely, the use of other herbicides, such as cyanazine, has increased by more than 25 percent since 1989. The data, from 73 counties in Ohio and Indiana, were entered into a computerized data base in a spreadsheet format and subsequently into a geographic information system (GIS).\r\n\r\nAquifer-characteristics data from this compilation include the results of 105 pumped-well tests and 39 slug tests in wells completed in glacial deposits, 174 pumped-well tests in wells completed in the carbonate-rock aquifer, and 4 slug tests in wells completed in limestones and shales of Ordovician age. Transmissivities from the pumped-well tests in wells completed in glacial till and glacial-deposit aquifers (sands and gravels) range from 1.54 to 69,700 feet squared per day. Storage coefficients or specific yields range from 0.00002 to 0.38 at these wells. Horizontal-hydraulic conductivities from the slug tests in wells completed in glacial-deposit aquifers range from 0.33 to 1,000 feet per day. Transmissivities from the pumped-well tests in wells completed in the carbonate-rock aquifer range from 70 to 52,000 feet squared per day. Storage coefficient or specific yields at these wells range from 0.00001 to 0.05. Horizontal hydraulic conductivities from the slug tests in wells completed in limestones and shales of Ordovician age range from 0.0016 to 12 feet per day. These data are summarized in tables and figures within this report.\r\n\r\nThe collection and compilation of selected aquifer-characteristic data for the glacial-deposit and carbonate-rock aquifers within the Midwestern Basin and Arches Region of Shaver (1985) are an essential part of the Midwestern Basins and Arches Regional Aquifer-Systems Analysis (Midwestern Basins and Arches RASA) project of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Specifically, the data are needed to help describe ground-water flow in the regional aquifer system, which isone of the objectives of the Midwestern Basins and Arches RASA project (Bugliosi, 1990). To meet this objective, the Midwestern Basins and Arches RASA began subprojects in the Ohio and Indiana offices of the USGS to collect and compile available aquifer-characteristics data from aquifer tests of the glacial-deposit and carbonate-rock aquifers.
