Locally, red garnet, in part in euhedral crystals as large as 10 cm, as well as strongly pleochroic hyperstnene, characterize these rocks. These hornblende-rich rocks dominate the north slopes of the southern tail of the Sierra Nevada, but are also present as inclusion masses of various sizes in the dominantly granitic terrane to She northeast. \r\n\r\nThe mafic, hornblende-rich rocks reflect a deeper crustal level than the dominantly granitic terrane to the northeast based on: 1) 'index' minerals (presence of hypersthene, coarse garnet, and brown hornblende; 2) textures (considerable ambivalence of whether individual samples are metamorphic or magmatic, 3) metamorphic grade (at least local granulite facies); and 4) the presence of migmatite, and the eviaence of local melting and mobilization. These rocks may be exposures of the upper part of the root zone and metamorphic substrate of the Sierra Nevada batholith. Xenoliths of gneiss, amphibolite, and granulite from sub-batholithic levels, that have been transported upward and preserved in volcanic rocks in the central Sierra Nevada, are similar to some exposed rocks of the southernmost Sierra Nevada. \r\n\r\nHypersthene-bearing granulite and tonalite, as well as distinctive granofels of mid-Cretaceous age, are exposed in the western part of the Santa Lucia Range (some 300 km to the northwest across the San Andreas fault). These rocks have much in common with some of the metamorphic and magmatic rocks in the southernmost Sierra Nevada, suggesting that the two areas record similar metamorphic conditions and crustal depth. Mid-Cretaceous hypersthene granulite is rare, which makes correlation of the Santa Lucia Range and the southernmost Sierra Nevada seem attractive. Nevertheless, possibly significant petrographic anm rock distribution differences between the two areas (particularly the relative abundances of carbonate rocks and amphibolite) dictate caution in suggesting the two terranes were once contiguous.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83465","usgsCitation":"Ross, D., 1983, Hornblende-rich, high grade metamorphic terranes in the southernmost Sierra Nevada, California, and implications for crustal depths and batholith roots: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-465, 56 p. maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83465.","productDescription":"56 p. maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142457,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0465/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38687,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0465/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae0e4b07f02db688147","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ross, Donald Clarence","contributorId":49768,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ross","given":"Donald Clarence","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162209,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The measurements were made in mid-winter when pumping was minimal and water levels had recovered, for the most part, from the effects of pumping during the previous irrigation season. Annual hydrologic data are provided for relating water-level changes from a ' base-reference year ' (predevelopment year), a year of abnormally high rainfall and minimum pumpage (1966 or 1974) and each of seen consecutive years of measurement (1977-83). The ' base-reference year ' is designated as 1940 for the southwestern area, 1944 for the south-central area, and 1950 for the northwestern and west-central areas. Water levels for the ' base-reference year ' are established by measurements made during that year and by interpretation of maps showing water-level altitudes. One modification, the Santee-Cooper diversion project, caused a twentyfold increase in freshwater inflow to the harbor. The other modification was deepening of the navigation channels in the harbor from 30 to 35 feet below mean low water. After field and model studies indicated that the diversion was the major cause of the increase in the sedimentation rate, plans were made to redivert most of the Santee River water back to its former channel. This report documents a review of existing data and literature that was made to evaluate rediversion as a means of reducing the rate of maintenance dredging. The postrediversion decrease in the rate of maintenance dredging can be estimated only within broad limits because some important questions lack reliable answers. Analysis of available information indicates that rediversion will eventually reduce the rate of maintenance dredging by about 40 to 75 percent. The reduction in the rate of maintenance dredging may be delayed for a decade or more by the gradual removal of accumulated sediment and may be partially offset by the effects of future channel deepening.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri834198","usgsCitation":"Patterson, G.G., 1983, Effect of the proposed Cooper River rediversion on sedimentation in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 83-4198, vi, 65 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri834198.","productDescription":"vi, 65 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":413781,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_49178.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":57927,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4198/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":119735,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4198/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"South Carolina","otherGeospatial":"Charleston Harbor, Cooper River","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -80.1667,\n 33.5\n ],\n [\n -80.1667,\n 32.6667\n ],\n [\n -79.75,\n 32.6667\n ],\n [\n -79.75,\n 33.5\n ],\n [\n -80.1667,\n 33.5\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adce4b07f02db6866ea","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Patterson, G. The scarcity of current-meter measurements, coupled with backwater conditions, makes definition of a single stage-discharge relation impossible. However, limit curves can be defined that \r\n\r\nwould encompass such a relation. Backwater is defined as water backed up or retarded in its course as compared with water flowing under normal or natural conditions. This results in a rise in stage above normal water level while the discharge remains unaffected. Backwater is usually caused by temporary obstruction(s) to flow downstream. Backwater at Aliceville Dam results from a variety of river conditions. Some of these conditions are large tributary inflow, return of flood plain flows to the main channel during recessions, and operations at Gainesville Dam during low flows. The discharges obtained from 26 current-meter measurements, along with computed discharges through the dam, are plotted versus stage. The plot illustrates, by the scatter of data points, the variations in backwater. Curves are drawn to envelope the extreme plot patterns showing possible ranges of several feet in stage for any given discharge. The upper end of the curves were extrapolated based on the results of a step-backwater analysis.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr83752","usgsCitation":"Nelson, G.H., and Ming, C.O., 1983, Preliminary stage-discharge relations for Tombigbee River at Aliceville lock and dam, near Pickensville, Alabama: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-752, Report: iv, 11 p.; 3 Plates: 17.51 × 10.68 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83752.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 11 p.; 3 Plates: 17.51 × 10.68 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":38356,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0752/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38355,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0752/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38358,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0752/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38357,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0752/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":110629,"rank":700,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_75703.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"75703"},{"id":144636,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0752/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alabama","city":"Pickensville","otherGeospatial":"Tombigbee River at Aliceville lock and dam","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -88.3,\n 32.8222\n ],\n [\n -88.1472,\n 32.8222\n ],\n [\n -88.1472,\n 33.25\n ],\n [\n -88.3,\n 33.25\n ],\n [\n -88.3,\n 32.8222\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b32e4b07f02db6b48ed","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nelson, G. Reservoir-surface areas ranged from 0.2 to 146 hectares and depths ranged from 0.01 to 6.0 meters. Of the reservoirs studied, six generally had water quality that would not be detrimental to fish propagation. Most of the reservoirs were enriched with nutrients and supported large concentrations of phytoplankton and dense growth of aquatic plants. In late winter and late summer, enrichment of shallow reservoirs often resulted in dissolved-oxygen concentrations less than 5.0 milligrams per liter, which is detrimental to fish. Three reservoirs lacked aquatic plants for water fowl habitat. Four reservoirs had small dissolved-oxygen concentration in the bottom water that might be critical to the protection of waterfowl if botulism were to occur. Specific conductance of water samples from three reservoirs was sufficiently close to the criterion of 4,800 microsiemens per centimeter at 25 degrees celsius to be regarded as potentially hazardous to livestock. However, most of the reservoirs generally would not be conducive to recreational swimming. Visibility was limited in most of the reservoirs. Analysis of the field situation at specific problem sites quickly suggested that conventional stream gaging techniques should be supplanted by new instruments, designed to measure key hydraulic data at the nearest stream control structures. The key data were found universally to include some combination of a length measurement to specify the vertical height of a gate opening in a dam; measurement of pressure head differential in a turbine; a count of lockages; and precise measurement of time, to give one master reference scale to which all measurements could be keyed. The instruments designed to collect such key data are the shaft position digitizer, the shaft output follower, the STACOM manometer, the lock pressure switch, and the digital data collection console. Although their design was prompted by the need to collect data at river control structures their potential for field use is not that restrictive. Several of these instruments have already found widespread use in the hydrologic data collection program at large. In the 12-1/2 yr period from June 1968 to December 1980 nineteen different river control structures were instrumented. The general experience to date has been a marked improvement in completeness of record, with the average performance somewhere in the 80 percentile range. Performance percentiles at individual sites have ranged from the mid 90 's to about 70. Maintenance records show the instruments to be virtually trouble free, except for the unpredictable acts of nature and man. Most of the rocks come from drill core in the Ranger No. 1 and Ranger No. 3 deposits, but 20 samples are from unmineralized drill core more than 1 km from ore. Statistical tests show that the elements Mg, Fe, F, Be, Co, Li, Ni, Pb, Sc, Th, Ti, V, CI, As, Br, Au, Ce, Dy, La Sc, Eu, Tb, Yb, and Tb have positive association with uranium, and Si, Ca, Na, K, Sr, Ba, Ce, and Cs have negative association. For most lithologic subsets Mg, Fe, Li, Cr, Ni, Pb, V, Y, Sm, Sc, Eu, and Yb are significantly enriched in ore-bearing rocks, whereas Ca, Na, K, Sr, Ba, Mn, Ce, and Cs are significantly depleted. These results are consistent with petrographic observations on altered rocks. Some features of their base reflect structural deformation during Quaternary time. Many freshwater fossils occur in the Tulare Formation itself, including the largest fossil assemblage of clams and snails known on the Pacific Coast.
