Reservoir-surface areas ranged from 0.2 to 146 hectares and depths ranged from 0.01 to 6.0 meters. Of the reservoirs studied, six generally had water quality that would not be detrimental to fish propagation. Most of the reservoirs were enriched with nutrients and supported large concentrations of phytoplankton and dense growth of aquatic plants. In late winter and late summer, enrichment of shallow reservoirs often resulted in dissolved-oxygen concentrations less than 5.0 milligrams per liter, which is detrimental to fish. Three reservoirs lacked aquatic plants for water fowl habitat. Four reservoirs had small dissolved-oxygen concentration in the bottom water that might be critical to the protection of waterfowl if botulism were to occur. Specific conductance of water samples from three reservoirs was sufficiently close to the criterion of 4,800 microsiemens per centimeter at 25 degrees celsius to be regarded as potentially hazardous to livestock. However, most of the reservoirs generally would not be conducive to recreational swimming. Visibility was limited in most of the reservoirs. In addition, leech populations and growth of submersed aquatic plants in most of the reservoirs would be a nuisance to swimmers.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri834008","usgsCitation":"Ferreira, R.F., 1983, Significance of water quality to fish propagation, waterfowl habitat, livestock watering, and recreation use for 24 lakes and reservoirs in Valley and Phillips Counties, Montana: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 83-4008, v, 58 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri834008.","productDescription":"v, 58 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":410318,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35654.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":55938,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4008/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":158672,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4008/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Montana","county":"Phillips County, Valley County","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -106.458,\n              47.817\n            ],\n            [\n              -106.458,\n              49\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.281,\n              49\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.281,\n              47.817\n            ],\n            [\n              -106.458,\n              47.817\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49d4e4b07f02db5dd03a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ferreira, R. The deposits range in thickness from 0 to more than 4,000 feet and overlie the upper Mya zone of the San Joaquin Formation of Pliocene age. Some features of their base reflect structural deformation during Quaternary time. Many freshwater fossils occur in the Tulare Formation itself, including the largest fossil assemblage of clams and snails known on the Pacific Coast. Sediments in the Tulare Formation and other continental deposits consist mainly of unconsolidated deposits of clay, silt, sand, and gravel. Texture maps of the Tulare Formation and other continental deposits show the distribution, both laterally and vertically, of the coarse- and fine-grained sediment in the area. Such maps can be used by water managers for selecting areas for recharge and discharge operations and by ground-water modelers for assigning relative values of hydraulic conductivity and storage coefficient.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri834000","usgsCitation":"Page, R.W., 1983, Geology of the Tulare Formation and other continental deposits, Kettleman City area, San Joaquin Valley, California, with a section on ground-water management considerations and use of texture maps: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 83-4000, Report: iv, 24 p.; 2 Plates: 21.67 x 24.81 inches and 18.84 x 19.65 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri834000.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 24 p.; 2 Plates: 21.67 x 24.81 inches and 18.84 x 19.65 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":411591,"rank":5,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35648.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":57860,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4000/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":57859,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4000/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":57858,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4000/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":118805,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4000/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Kettleman City area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -120.098,\n              36.158\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.25,\n              36.158\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.25,\n              35.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.098,\n              35.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.098,\n              36.158\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acce4b07f02db67e40f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Page, R. These metamorphic rocks are largely amphibolite, mafic and felsic gneiss, granofels, and hypersthene granulite The mineral assemblages suggest that these rocks are at least in part of granulite grade, represent relatively deep crustal levels, and may be exposed parts of the root zone of the Sierra Nevada batholith. Access to the largest area of these rocks is relatively limited and for this reason petrographic data (textures and mineral content based on thin section study) are summarized here. Directions to readily accessible localities are presented, however, where the major metamorphic rock types can be examined and sampled.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83587","usgsCitation":"Ross, D., 1983, Petrographic (thin section) notes on selected samples from hornblende-rich metamorphic terranes in the southernmost Sierra Nevada, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-587, 35 p.  ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83587.","productDescription":"35 p.  ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142458,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0587/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38688,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0587/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adee4b07f02db68756d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ross, Donald Clarence","contributorId":49768,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ross","given":"Donald Clarence","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162210,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Locally, red garnet, in part in euhedral crystals as large as 10 cm, as well as strongly pleochroic hyperstnene, characterize these rocks. These hornblende-rich rocks dominate the north slopes of the southern tail of the Sierra Nevada, but are also present as inclusion masses of various sizes in the dominantly granitic terrane to She northeast. \r\n\r\nThe mafic, hornblende-rich rocks reflect a deeper crustal level than the dominantly granitic terrane to the northeast based on: 1) 'index' minerals (presence of hypersthene, coarse garnet, and brown hornblende; 2) textures (considerable ambivalence of whether individual samples are metamorphic or magmatic, 3) metamorphic grade (at least local granulite facies); and 4) the presence of migmatite, and the eviaence of local melting and mobilization. These rocks may be exposures of the upper part of the root zone and metamorphic substrate of the Sierra Nevada batholith. Xenoliths of gneiss, amphibolite, and granulite from sub-batholithic levels, that have been transported upward and preserved in volcanic rocks in the central Sierra Nevada, are similar to some exposed rocks of the southernmost Sierra Nevada. \r\n\r\nHypersthene-bearing granulite and tonalite, as well as distinctive granofels of mid-Cretaceous age, are exposed in the western part of the Santa Lucia Range (some 300 km to the northwest across the San Andreas fault). These rocks have much in common with some of the metamorphic and magmatic rocks in the southernmost Sierra Nevada, suggesting that the two areas record similar metamorphic conditions and crustal depth. Mid-Cretaceous hypersthene granulite is rare, which makes correlation of the Santa Lucia Range and the southernmost Sierra Nevada seem attractive. Nevertheless, possibly significant petrographic anm rock distribution differences between the two areas (particularly the relative abundances of carbonate rocks and amphibolite) dictate caution in suggesting the two terranes were once contiguous.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83465","usgsCitation":"Ross, D., 1983, Hornblende-rich, high grade metamorphic terranes in the southernmost Sierra Nevada, California, and implications for crustal depths and batholith roots: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-465, 56 p. maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83465.","productDescription":"56 p. maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142457,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0465/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38687,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0465/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae0e4b07f02db688147","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ross, Donald Clarence","contributorId":49768,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ross","given":"Donald Clarence","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162209,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The area is underlain by two lithologically distinct, Precambrian volcanosedimentary units and a wide range of dioritoid and granitoid plutonic intrusive rocks. The only Phanerozoic rocks consist of one outcrop of Tertiary(?) basalt and widespread but thin deposits of Quaternary detritus. \r\n\r\nThe Banana greenstone, the oldest rock in the quadrangle, consists of intermediate volcanic and subvolcanic rocks and minor interbedded marble, which have been metamorphosed to greenschist-facies assemblages. Volcanic rocks mainly range in composition from basalt to andesite, and subvolcanic rocks consist of diorite and diabase. \r\n\r\nThe Banana greenstone is unconformably overlain by silicic volcanic rocks and minor arkosic sandstone and breccia of the Hadn formation. Preservation of delicate volcanic textures suggests that the rocks have been only incipiently metamorphosed. Unpublished rubidium/strontium isotopic data for the Hadn formation suggest an age of 620 to 610 Ma. \r\n\r\nIntrusive rocks are separable according to their ages relative to the Hadn formation. Those that are unconformably overlain by the Hadn formation consist of hornblende quartz diorite and gabbro, which may be consanguineous with the Banana greenstone, and younger tonalite, biotite-hornblende granodiorite, syenogranite, and monzogranite. Plutons of monzogranite, alkali-feldspar g,ranite, syenbgranite, peralkaline granite, and hypabyssal intrusions of granophyre were probably emplaced during a period coincident with and (or) following Hadn volcanism. Uranium-lead and rubidium/strontium isotopic data for two plutons in the adjacent Al Qasr quadrangle suggest that plutonic activity persisted in the region until about 580 to 570 Ma. \r\n\r\nFaulting appears to postdate all of the plutonic rocks. The dominant faults belong to a northeast-trending system of right-lateral shears; a subordinant system consists of mainly north- to northwest-trending faults.\r\n\r\nThe peralkaline-granite plutons underlying Jibal Ba'gham and Jibal ar Rumman have the most economic potential. Wadi samples from these areas show an anomalous concentrations of tin, lead, niobium, and yttrium. Localized, intense radiometric anomalies in the Ba'gham intrusive complex are associated with high concentrations )f thorium, uranium, andrare-earth elements.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83331","usgsCitation":"Quick, J.E., 1983, Reconnaissance geology of the Ghazzalah Quadrangle, sheet 26/41 A, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-331, 48 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83331.","productDescription":"48 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143383,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0331/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38563,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0331/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38564,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0331/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38565,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0331/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38566,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0331/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a17e4b07f02db60422c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Quick, James E.","contributorId":21552,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Quick","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161913,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The freshwater part of the aquifer is underlain by saltwater in lower formations and is bounded on the west by saltwater in the coastal parts of the aquifer. A zone of mixing lies between the saltwater and freshwater. The saltwater and freshwater boundaries are defined by chloride concentrations of 19,000 milligrams per liter on the coastward side and 250 milligrams per liter on the landward side. Lateral intrusion of saltwater can occur along the coast in areas where the hydraulic gradient declines and upconing can occur in inland areas of heavy ground-water withdrawals. Safeguards against saltwater intrusion in these areas are necessary because flushing of the aquifer is a very slow process. A network of chloride monitor wells is proposed for the zone of mixing in the upper producing zone of the floridan aquifer. Seventy wells were selected at 54 sites to monitor chloride concentrations along the 250-milligram-per-liter line of equal chloride concentration. One-fourth of the wells are located in areas of increasing chloride concentrations or heavy ground-water withdrawals and the remaining wells are intended to improve delineation of the interface and to monitor long-term changes in chloride concentrations.
