The model treats oil shale as a dual-porosity medium by simulating flow and transport within fractures using the finite-element method. Diffusion of solute between fractures and the essentially static water of the shale matrix is simulated by including an analytical solution that acts as a source-sink term to the differential equation of solute transport. While knowledge of fracture orientation and spacing is needed to effectively use the model, it is not necessary to map the locations of individual fractures. The computer program listed in the report incorporates many of the features of previous dual-porosity models while retaining a practical approach to solving field problems. As a result the theory of solute transport is not extended in any appreciable way. The emphasis is on bringing together various aspects of solute transport theory in a manner that is particularly suited to the unusual groundwater flow and solute transport characteristics of oil shale systems. A total of nine samplers were used. Samples were collected weekly and analyzed for pH, specific conductance, common chemical constituents, and sample volume. Additionally, data on the duration of each sampler opening were recorded using a microdatalogger. These data disprove the common perception that samplers remain open throughout a precipitation event. The sensitivity of sampler sensors within the range tested did not have a defineable impact on sample collection. The nonnormal distribution within the data set necessitated application of the nonparametric Friedman Test to assess comparability of sample chemical composition and volume between and within sampler brands. Statistically significant differences existed for most comparisons, however the test did not permit quantification of their magnitudes. Differences in analyte concentrations between samplers were small. Major municipal well fields in the basin are Morris Bridge and Cypress Creek where an averages of 15.3 and 30.0 million gal/day (mgd), respectively, were pumped in 1980. Mean annual rainfall for the study area is 53.7 inches. Average rainfall for 1980, determined from eight rainfall stations, was 49.7 inches. Evapotranspiration, corrected for the 5% of the basin that is standing water, was 35.7 in/year. The principal geohydrologic units in the basin are the surficial aquifer, the intermediate aquifer and confining beds, the Upper Floridan aquifer, the middle confining unit, and the Lower Floridan aquifer. Total pumpage of groundwater in 1980 was 98.18 mgd. The surficial aquifer and the intermediate aquifer are not used for major groundwater supply in the basin. Continuous marine seismic-reflection data collected along selected reaches of the Hillsborough River were interpreted to define the riverbed profile, the thickness of surficial deposits, and the top of persistent limestone. Major areas of groundwater discharge near the Hillsborough River and its tributaries are the wetlands adjacent to the river between the Zephyrhills gaging stations and Fletcher Avenue and the wetlands adjacent to Cypress Creek. An estimated 20 mgd seeps upward from the Upper Floridan aquifer within those wetland areas. The runoff/sq mi is greater at the Zephyrhills station than at Morris Bridge. However, results of groundwater flow models and potentiometric-surface maps indicate that groundwater is flowing upward along the Hillsborough River between the Zephyrhills gage and the Morris Bridge gage. This upward leakage is lost to evapotranspiration. An aquifer test conducted in 1978 at the Morris Bridge well field was evaluated by using an anisotropic method. Analytical results matched observed water levels within 0.1 ft. Analysis of aquifer test results indicates that withdrawals of up to 28 mgd would have a negligible effect on the river stage or flow. The major aquifers in the study area are the Tuscaloosa, Eutaw, and Providence-Ripley aquifers of Cretaceous age; and the Nanafalia-Clayton aquifer of Tertiary age. The five counties constitute the primary recharge area for the aquifers which are the source of public supplies in the study area. The total withdrawals of groundwater for all uses in 1986 were estimated to be about 14 million gallons per day. Areas of water level declines in the Tuscaloosa aquifer have developed near Eufaula and Union Springs. Water levels in the Eutaw aquifer have declined at Union Springs. All recharge areas for the major aquifers are susceptible to contamination from the surface. Shallow wells in the outcrop area are most susceptible.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri874187","usgsCitation":"Kidd, R.E., 1987, Geohydrology and susceptibility of major aquifers to surface contamination in Alabama; area 9: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 87-4187, Report: v, 32 p.; 1 Plate: 15.51 × 18.17 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri874187.","productDescription":"Report: v, 32 p.; 1 Plate: 15.51 × 18.17 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":56839,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1987/4187/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":56838,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1987/4187/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":126807,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1987/4187/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":110248,"rank":700,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_46845.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"46845"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alabama","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -86.1889,\n 31.625\n ],\n [\n -84.8958,\n 31.625\n ],\n [\n -84.8958,\n 32.5833\n ],\n [\n -86.1889,\n 32.5833\n ],\n [\n -86.1889,\n 31.625\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1be4b07f02db6a8c25","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kidd, R. Much of the work was done in cooperation with State and local agencies. Additional supporting funds were transferred from other Federal agencies or appropriated directly to the Geological Survey. The water resources program in California consisted of 42 projects. Each project is briefly described. Brief descriptions are given of the origin of the U.S. Geological Survey and the Water Resources Division 's basic mission. An abbreviated organizational structure of the California District, sources of funding, a summary of water conditions, and a listing of reports published during fiscal year 1986 are also included. Various combinations of Ag, As, Bi, Cu, Mo, Pb, Sb, and W in stream sediments and concentrates provide guides to five general types of deposits and their geologic environments. Multi-element suites that recur in stream-sediment media resemble those observed in mineralized rock samples, and the distribution of the suites corresponds to the distribution of known types of deposits and to the general geology of the region.

Multi-element geochemical anomalies are prominent in the Pilot Mountains, Monte Cristo Range, Paradise Range, Lone Mountain, northeastern Toiyabe Range, Cedar Mountains, and Toquima Range. Strongest multi-element anomalies are associated with plutonic rocks in the western part of the quadrangle. Two base-metal suites are enriched in and around plutons: (1) Bi + W + Pb + Mo ± As, Cu, Sb, a suite that resembles metals enriched in rocks samples from skarn deposits; and (2) Pb + Mo ± As,Cu,Sb, which resembles base-metal enrichments in sulfide vein and replacement deposits, generally associated with intrusions. A third variety of base-metal enrichment that contains Ag is distinguished for its possible economic importance. This Ag-Pb-rich suite occurs both near plutons and in volcanic terrane and generally is near areas of known Ag-rich polymetallic deposits.

Many sites are characterized by modest enrichments of two to five elements in the suite As-Mo-Sb-Zn-Ag that resemble enrichments in epithermal ore deposits. Many anomalies of this type are from drainages underlain by Tertiary welded tuff, commonly lacking alteration and mineral prospects. Some of these anomalous sites correlate with areas of known epithermal deposits or siliceous alteration of calcareous rocks, thus this suite may be a guide to precious-metal deposits if there is supporting geologic evidence.

The results from regional sampling of stream sediments, utilizing the <0.25-mm fraction and nonmagnetic heavy-mineral-concentrate media, effectively outline most areas of known deposits or alteration in the Tonopah quadrangle.
