Access is provided by secondary roads and trails from Interstate Highway 5, which passes through Mount Shasta City and Dunsmuir. The areas are located in rugged terrane in the easternmost part of the Klamath Mountains where altitudes range from about 2,500 ft (7.62 m) in the southern Castle Crags area to 9,025 ft (2,751 m) on Mount Eddy. The wilderness lies across the Bitterroot Range, which forms the boundary between Idaho and Montana, and includes large portions of the drainages of the Selway, Lochsa, and Bitterroot Rivers. Elevations range from 1,800 ft on the Selway River near the wilderness boundary to 10,157 ft at Trapper Peak in the Bitterroot Mountains. Cities within 50 min of the wilderness include Missoula, Hamilton, and Salmon on the east, and Orofino and Grangeville on the west. The study covered most of the area between the Fall Line (northwest margin of the Coastal Plain) and the Orangeburg (Citronelle) escarpment (fig. 1).</p>\n<p>Fieldwork was done principally by vehicle along roads, but also included railroad cuts and excavation sites, such as quarries and landfills. Natural exposures are rare and provided no examples of deformation structures for this study. The geologic units exposed in the area are chiefly clastic sediments deposited in nearshore marine to continental environments. They include semi-consolidated sand, silt, clay, and rare thin impure limestone beds of Late Cretaceous to Eocene age (fig. 2). Areas officially designated as \"wilderness,\" \"wild,\" or \"canoe\" when the act was passed were incorporated into the National Wilderness Preservation System, and some of them are presently being studied. The act provided that areas under consideration for wilderness designation should be studied for suitability for incorporation into the Wilderness System. The mineral surveys constitute one aspect of the suitability studies. The act directs that the results of such surveys are to be made available to the public and be submitted to the President and the Congress. This report discusses the results of a mineral survey of the Buffalo Peaks Wilderness Study Area, Pike and San Isabel National Forests, Lake, Park, and Chaffee Counties, Colo. This stratigraphic interval has been called the Burro Canyon Formation by several workers (Craig and others, 1959; Smith and others, 1961; Saucier, 1974). Although similarities in lithology and stratigraphic position exist between this unit and the Burro Canyon Formation in Colorado, no direct correlation has been made between the two. For this reason the unit in the Chama Basin is called the Burro Canyon(?) Other reports in the series describe the geology (Epstein, 1983a), geochemistry (Epstein, 1983b), and a summary interpretive report (Epstein, Gazdik, and Behum, 1983).&nbsp;</p>\n<p>During the recent U.S. Bureau of Mines field investigation, 21 samples were collected (fig. 2) and were submitted to the Bureau's Reno Metallurgy Research Center, Reno, Nev., for analysis. All samples were tested for 40 elements by semiquantitative spectrographic analyses. Additional testing by atomic absorption, neutron activation, and wet chemical techniques was performed for selected elements on some samples.
