Several types of habitat i nformat i on are provided. The Habitat Use Information Section is largely constrained to those data that can be used to derive quantitative relationships between key environmental variables and habitat suitability. The habitat use information provides the foundation for HSI models that follow. This report is designed to be useful to the mine owners, operators, and others by presenting information about the existing hydrologic conditions and by identifying sources of hydrologic information. General hydrologic information is presented using a brief text with an accompanying map, chart, graph, or other illustration for each of a series of water-resources-related topics. The summation of the topical discussions provides a description of the hydrology of the area.</p>\n<p>Coal has been mined for 130 years in Area 38, but large reserves remain. Production peaked in 1917 when Iowa produced 9 million tons and Missouri produced 6 million tons. Underground mining has been replaced by surface mining in Area 38. Not all past surface-mined lands are subject to reclamation under recently enacted reclamation laws.</p>\n<p>The surface-water monitoring network in Area 38 consists of 183 stations. Streamflow varies seasonally and from year to year. Water-quality data are available for 49 stations in the study area. Measurements of specific conductance, dissolved solids, pH, alkalinity, sulfate, iron, manganese, trace metals and other constituents are available for 36 stations operated between 1978 and 1981 expressly for the collection of water-quality data within basins containing coal mines.</p>\n<p>A cumulative impact of coal mining on the mineralization of surface water is evident from specific-conductance data for stations downstream from mining activities. Alkalinity in streams in Area 38 averaged greater than 118 milligrams per liter, providing the capability to neutralize acid-mine drainage to some extent. Sulfate concentrations in streamflow averaged 88 milligrams per liter at stations upstream from coal mines and 269 milligrams per liter at stations downstream from coal mines. Significant relationships exist between totalrecoverable-iron concentrations and suspendedsediment concentrations. Manganese concentrations are larger in streams draining mined areas. Streamflow at 5 of the 36 coal-hydrology stations in Area 38, all located downstream from coal mines, exceeded acid-mine-drainage criteria at one time or another.</p>\n<p>In Area 38 dissolved-solids concentrations in water from the Cambrian-Ordovician aquifer range from 300 to 15,000 milligrams per liter; in southcentral Iowa and where the aquifer underlies the Missouri River alluvium, as in Boone County, Missouri, dissolved-solids concentrations are less than 1,000 milligrams per liter. In these areas the Cambrian-Ordovician aquifer is suitable for domestic and other uses. Chemical quality of water from Quaternary aquifers generally is suitable for domestic uses and other uses, dissolved-solids concentrations averaged less than 1,000 milligrams per liter. Iron, manganese and nitrate are excessive in some instances. Chemical quality of water from Mississippian and Pennsylvanian aquifers is unsuitable for domestic use and may be unsuitable for other uses. The Pennsylvanian and Misissippian aquifers have average sulfate concentrations in excess of 1,000 milligrams per liter.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological This study led to investigations of geopressured-geothermal resources in this basin (Papadopulos and others, 1975; Wallace and others, 1979) and of the waste storage capabilities of the Wilcox Group in Texas (Jones and others, 1976). Techniques for delineating pressure, temperature, and salinity variations within the geologic framework were developed in conjunction with these and related studies. The purpose of this hydrologic atlas is to delineate the hydrogeology of the onshore Cenozoic aquifers of south Texas, using these techniques.</p>\n<p><span>The location of the study area in Texas is shown in figure 1. Hydrogeologic cross section A-A' is shown in figure 2. The surface geology of the area and the line of section A&ndash;A' are shown in figure 3. Geophysical logs of oil tests provided the framework for this section. Chromite is not evenly disseminated throughout the dunite, however. For the most part the deposit consists of many chromite-rich bands in sharp contact with, and separated by, common dunite containing 1 to 2 percent accessory chromite. Electron microprobe and petrographic analysis of accessory chromite shows that it is fine grained (average grain size 0.14 mm), generally lower in Cr<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, and has a lower Cr/Fe ratio than segregated chromite. In addition, unusual patchy zoning is exhibited by some accessory chromite. These patchy zones are extremely rich in iron (&gt;60 percent total iron oxide). Surveyed-in lines will measure amounts of surface movement and tilt, borings that produced exploratory cores now serve as slip-surface detectors and open-pipe piezometers, and rain gages will record rainfall at both sites. \r\n\r\nExploratory cores and field observations located upper slip surfaces ranging in depth between 4 and 14 m. Rises of borehole-water levels of as much as 63 cm during drilling suggest that pore pressures exist at the inferred-slip surfaces. The majority of these plutons are highly evolved, granitophile-element-enriched muscovite-bearing granites that are weakly peraluminous.</p>\n<p>A followup study of the mineral potential of these plutons included detailed geologic mapping, extensive geochemical sampling, ground traverses, and petrographic and petrologic studies. A total of 212 samples were collected for geochemical analysis, and a lesser number were collected for petrographic studies.</p>\n<p>Most of the plutons studied are similar to metallogenically specialized granites described elsewhere in the world and found associated with deposits of tin, tungsten, or molybdenum and other rare metals. Only four of the plutons, the Sitarah, Tarban, and Gaharra monzogranites and the Bwana granite, contained highly anomalous amounts of tin, tungsten, or molybdenum and altered zones- and (or) numerous quartz veins and otherwise appeared to have noteworthy mineral potential. These geologic factors are principally crustal extension and crustal thinning during the last 17 million years. Basalts as young as 10,000 years have been mapped in the area. High-silica volcanic and intru­sive rocks of Quaternary age can be used to locate hydrothermal convection systems. Drilling for hot, high-silica, buried rock bodies is most promising in the areas of recent volcanic activity. Southwestern Utah has more geothermal potential than other parts of the Basin and Range province in Utah. The Roosevelt Hot Springs area, the Cove Fort-Sulphurdale area, and the area to the north as far as 60 kilome­ters from them probably have the best potential for geothermal devel­opment for generation of electricity. Other areas with estimated res­ervoir temperatures greater than 150°C are Thermo, Monroe, Red Hill (in the Monroe-Joseph Known Geothermal Resource Area), Joseph Hot Springs, and the Newcastle area. The rates of heat and water discharge are high at Crater, Meadow, and Hatton Hot Springs, but estimated reservoir temperatures there are less than 150°C. Ad­ditional exploration is needed to define the potential in three ad­ditional areas in the Escalante Desert.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological
