Primary activities include the systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of hydrologic data, evaluation of water demands, and water-resources research. Hydrologic investigations are conducted through four basic types of projects: (1) data-collection programs, (2) local or areal investigations, (3) statewide or regional investigations, and (4) research projects. These projects are funded through cooperative agreements with State and local agencies, transfer of funds from other Federal agencies, and direct Federal funds. Forty-two water-related projects were funded during fiscal years 1981 and 1982 in Kansas. This report describes for each of these water-resources investigations the problem that initiated the study, the objectives of the project, and the approach designed to achieve this objective. Information on data-collection stations in Kansas is presented in maps and tables. A list of reports approved for publication by the U.S. Geological Survey, its cooperators, or technical and scientific organizations during fiscal years 1981 and 1982 is also provided. This study led to investigations of geopressured-geothermal resources in this basin (Papadopulos and others, 1975; Wallace and others, 1979) and of the waste storage capabilities of the Wilcox Group in Texas (Jones and others, 1976). Techniques for delineating pressure, temperature, and salinity variations within the geologic framework were developed in conjunction with these and related studies. The purpose of this hydrologic atlas is to delineate the hydrogeology of the onshore Cenozoic aquifers of south Texas, using these techniques.</p>\n<p><span>The location of the study area in Texas is shown in figure 1. Hydrogeologic cross section A-A' is shown in figure 2. The surface geology of the area and the line of section A&ndash;A' are shown in figure 3. Geophysical logs of oil tests provided the framework for this section. Surveyed-in lines will measure amounts of surface movement and tilt, borings that produced exploratory cores now serve as slip-surface detectors and open-pipe piezometers, and rain gages will record rainfall at both sites. \r\n\r\nExploratory cores and field observations located upper slip surfaces ranging in depth between 4 and 14 m. Rises of borehole-water levels of as much as 63 cm during drilling suggest that pore pressures exist at the inferred-slip surfaces. Principal purposes of the program are to provide a means for participating water laboratories to: (1) identify analytical problem areas; (2) ascertain the accuracy and precision of common water analyses and analytical methods and; (3) provide reference samples for continuing quality assurance testing. Participation in this continuing quality assurance program is mandatory for all domestic laboratories providing water analysis data for Survey use. Analytical data submitted by the participating laboratories that analyzed the respective reference samples distributed in October 1982 are presented. Relative performance ratings achieved by the laboratories for each determination and statistical evaluation of the data are given in 14 tables. A hydrologic study was conducted in the potential lease area in 1981 to describe the existing hydrologic system and to assess potential impacts of surface coal mining on local water resources. The hydrologic data collected from wells, test holes, and springs were used to identify aquifers in the alluvium (Pleistocene and Holocene age) and the Tongue River member of the Fort Union Formation (Paleocene age). Coal, clinker, and sandstone beds comprise the aquifers in the Tongue River Member. Most streams are ephemeral and flow only as a result of precipitation. The only perennial surface-water flow in the study area is along short reaches downstream from springs. A mine plan for the area is not available; thus, the location of mine cuts, direction and rate of the mine expansion, and duration of mining are unknown. The mining of the Sawyer and Knoblock coal beds in the Tonge River Member would effect ground-water flow in the area. Declines in the potentiometric surface would be caused by dewatering where the mine pits intersect the water table. Wells and springs would be removed in the mine area; however, deeper aquifers are available as replacement sources of water. The chemical quality of the ground water would change after moving through the spoils. The change would be an increase in the concentration of dissolved solids. It shows that the Hazard Number 9 coal seam produces the largest quantities of acid and sulfate. The study also shows that most of the acid mine drainage is neutralized by carbonate minerals or is replaced by exchangeable bases from the aquifer materials before it reaches the streams. The generation of sediment is probably the most damaging effect of strip mining on water quality in the basin.
