It presents 18 charts giving newly developed relations for acceleration, velocity, and duration versus site earthquake intensity for near- and far-field hard and soft sites and earthquakes having magnitudes above and below 7. The material for this report is based on procedures developed at the Waterways Experiment Station. Although these procedures are suggested primarily for large dams, they may also be applicable for other facilities. \r\n\r\nBecause no standard procedure exists for selecting earthquake motions in engineering design of large dams, a number of precautions are presented to guide users. The selection of earthquake motions is dependent on which one of two types of engineering analyses are performed. A pseudostatic analysis uses a coefficient usually obtained from an appropriate contour map; whereas, a dynamic analysis uses either accelerograms assigned to a site or specified respunse spectra. Each type of analysis requires significantly different input motions. All selections of design motions must allow for the lack of representative strong motion records, especially near-field motions from earthquakes of magnitude 7 and greater, as well as an enormous spread in the available data. Limited data must be projected and its spread bracketed in order to fill in the gaps and to assure that there will be no surprises. Because each site may have differing special characteristics in its geology, seismic history, attenuation, recurrence, interpreted maximum events, etc., as integrated approach gives best results. Each part of the site investigation requires a number of decisions. In some cases, the decision to use a 'least ork' approach may be suitable, simply assuming the worst of several possibilities and testing for it. Because there are no standard procedures to follow, multiple approaches are useful. For example, peak motions at a site may be obtained from several methods that involve magnitude of earthquake, distance from source, and corresponding motions; or, alternately, peak motions may be assigned from other correlations based on earthquake intensity. Various interpretations exist to account for duration, recurrence, effects of site conditions, etc. Comparison of the various interpretations can be very useful. Probabilities can be assigned; however, they can present very serious problems unless appropriate care is taken when data are extrapolated beyond their data base. In making deterministic judgments, probabilistic data can provide useful guidance in estimating the uncertainties of the decision. \r\n\r\nThe selection of a design ground motion for large dams is based in the end on subjective judgments which should depend, to an important extent, on the consequences of failure. Usually, use of a design value of ground motion representing a mean plus one standard deviation of possible variation in the mean of the data puts one in a conservative position. If failure presents no hazard to life, lower values of design ground motion may be justified, providing there are cost benefits and the risk is acceptable to the owner. Where a large hazard to life exists (i.e., a dam above an urbanized area) one may wish to use values of design ground motion that approximate the very worst case. The selection of a design ground motion must be appropriate for its particular set of circumstances.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83636","usgsCitation":"Krinitzsky, E., and Marcuson, W.F., 1983, Principles for selecting earthquake motions in engineering design of large dams: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-636, 54 p. ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83636.","productDescription":"54 p. ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141195,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0636/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37688,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0636/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa7e4b07f02db666fe9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Krinitzsky, E.L.","contributorId":58269,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Krinitzsky","given":"E.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160476,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Marcuson, William F.","contributorId":21547,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Marcuson","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160475,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The purpose of the study was to determine differences in nutrient-loading characteristics for lakes with and without wetlands and settling ponds. The study also quantified nutrient loading to lakes on a storm, seasonal, and annual basis, complementing an inlake water-quality study of these lakes done by the Metropolitan Council.</p>\n<p>Discharge and water-quality data were collected periodically during 1981 and continuously during 1982 at 22 sites located in seven lake watersheds Bryant Lake, Lake Elmo, Fish Lake, Lake George, Lake Riley, Spring Lake, and Square Lake. Basin characteristics and land use were determined for each watershed. Recording instruments provided continuous discharge records at 14 sites and continuous rainfall records at six sites. Automatic water-quality samplers were used at lake inlets. The automatic samplers collected samples at 1- to 2-hour intervals during storms. Lake-outlet samples were collected manually on a weekly basis during flow. Samples were analyzed for suspended solids and nutrients. Atmospheric-input data were collected at eight sites from September 23 to November 1, 1982. This report describes </span><span>the availability and chemical quality of ground water, which might provide a </span><span>source or supplement of water supply for an oil-shale industry. </span></p><p><span>Ground water in the southeastern Uinta Basin occurs in three major aquifers. Alluvial aquifers of small areal extent are present in valley-fill deposits of six major drainages. Consolidated-rock aquifers include the bird's-nest aquifer in the Parachute Creek Member of the Green River Formation, which is limited to the central part of the study area; and the Douglas Creek aquifer, which includes parts of the Douglas Creek Member of the Green River Formation and parts of the intertonguing Renegade Tongue of the Wasatch Formation; this aquifer underlies most of the study area. </span></p><p><span>The alluvial aquifers are recharged by infiltration of streamflow and leakage from consolidated-rock aquifers. Recharge is estimated to average about 32,000 acre-feet per year. Discharge from alluvial aquifers, primarily by evapotranspiration, also averages about 32,000 acre-feet per year. The estimated volume of recoverable water in storage in alluvial aquifers is about 200,000 acre-feet. Maximum yields to individual wells are less than 1,000 gallons per minute. </span></p><p><span>Recharge to the bird's-nest aquifer, primarily from stream infiltration and downward leakage from the overlying Uinta Formation, is estimated to average 670 acre-feet per year. Discharge from the bird's-nest aquifer, which is primarily by seepage to Bitter Creek and the White River, is estimated to be 670 acre-feet per year. The estimated volume of recoverable water in storage in the bird's-nest aquifer is 1.9 million acre-feet. Maximum yields to individual wells in some areas may be as much as 5,000 gallons per minute. </span></p><p><span>A digital-computer model of the flow system was used to evaluate the effects of oil-shale development on the bird's-nest aquifer at the Federal lease tracts Ua and Ub. Results of model simulations indicate that during construction of a vertical access shaft, a pumping rate of about 900 gallons per minute would be required to dewater the aquifer. The model also indicates that the construction of a proposed reservoir on the White River may raise water levels in the bird's-nest aquifer near the reservoir site by as much as 45 feet. </span></p><p><span>The flow model was used to evaluate the potential ground-water supply available for oil-shale development in the vicinity of the Federal lease tracts Ua and Ub. The results of the simulation indicate that the bird's-nest aquifer could supply about 10,000 acre-feet of water per year at that site, for a period of 20 years. Drawdown after 20 years of pumping would exceed 250 feet near the simulated well field. Based on the results of the model simulation, it is estimated that the aquifer could simultaneously supply another 10,000 acre-feet of water per year in the northern part of the study area, but some interference between well fields could be expected. </span></p><p><span>The Douglas Creek aquifer is recharged by precipitation and stream infiltration at an average rate of about 20,000 acre-feet per year. Discharge is estimated to be about the same and is primarily through springs and diffuse seepage. The estimated volume of recoverable water in storage is 16 million acre-feet. Water from alluvial wells </span><span>generally is a sodium sulfate type, whereas water in both the consolidated-</span><span>rock aquifers generally changes from a sodium sulfate type to a sodium </span><span>bicarbonate type. The mass-transfer </span><span>model of the Bitter Creek alluvial aquifer shows that evaporative </span><span>concentration, combined with precipitation of calcite, dolomite, gypsum, and </span><span>release of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere results in the documented changes </span><span>in pH and dissolved solids in the water. The region is composed of tectonic slices of magnetic ultramafic, gabboric, and other ophiolitic rocks faulted against &nbsp;the realitively nonmagnetic Dothan Formation, the equivalent of the Franciscan Complex of Western California. The sharp contacts between these rocks are manifested in the data by abrupt contrases in the nature of the magnetic anomalies which provide insights into the structural relations of major geologic elements.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Most individual anomalies in this area are caused by known geologic boundaries or topographic features; those that are not are of particular interest because they may reflect areas of increased or decreased magnetization associated with zones of minerlization.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U. Dye-cloud centroid traveltimes ranged from approximately 120 hours at high discharge to 410 hours at flows approaching 95 percentile duration. Longitudinal dispersion coeficients ranged from 21.3 to 76.7 square meters per second. In the 37.2 kilometer unsteady flow reach from Gulf Island Dam to Prejepscot Dam, the concept of mass flow versus time was applied to relate centroid traveltime to average discharge at five sites. This information was used to develop traveltime versus discharge relationships, traveltime versus distance relationships, and longitudinal dispersion coefficients. In Gulf Island Pond, a 70.4 million cubic meter impoundment, three complete dye clouds were traced. The range of observed centroid traveltime through the pound was 110 hours at a mean discharge of 84 cubic meters per second to 260 hours at 59 cubic meters per second. Traveltimes are dependent upon reservoir stratification and mixing as well as discharge. During 1981, inflowing dye-tagged water at 19.0 and 19.5 degrees Celsius was observed to seek its own temperature density level during movement along the thalweg. On several occasions their instability has resulted in serious damage. For example, the 1868 earthquake (m=7+), following a prolonged rainy period, caused a debris flow of hillside ash deposits that killed 31 people in Wood Valley (Bringham, 1869). The 1973 Honomu earthquake (m=6.2) resulted in more damage from shaking to areas underlain by ash deposits in the older part of Hilo than in other areas, and soil slips in ash, as well as rockfalls, were common along the roads north of town (Nielsen and others, 1977).&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Three geologic units are represented on the accompanying map: the ash deposits, a clay bed that locally underlies the ash, and the bedrock material.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1499","usgsCitation":"Buchanan-Banks, J.M., 1983, Reconnaissance map showing thickness of volcanic ash deposits in the greater Hilo area, Hawaii: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1499, 28.40 x 28.25 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1499.","productDescription":"28.40 x 28.25 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":183148,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1499.PNG"},{"id":327165,"rank":1,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1499/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"24000","country":"United States","state":"Hawai'i","city":"Hilo","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -155.16666666666666,19.700833333333332 ], [ -155.16666666666666,19.784166666666668 ], [ -155.08333333333334,19.784166666666668 ], [ -155.08333333333334,19.700833333333332 ], [ -155.16666666666666,19.700833333333332 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a6ce4b07f02db63e88d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Buchanan-Banks, Jane M.","contributorId":29421,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Buchanan-Banks","given":"Jane","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":261304,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
