In 1976, as part of a national program, the U.S. Geological Survey began a study of the geohydrology of the waste-burial site to provide a basis for estimating the potential for radionuclide migration in the unsaturated zone beneath the waste-burial trenches. Data collected include meteorological information for calibration of a long-term water-budget analysis, soil-moisture profiles, soil-water potentials, and hydraulic properties of representative unsaturated sediment samples to a depth of about 10 meters (m).</p><p>The waste-burial facility is in the northern Amargosa Desert about 170 kilometers (km) northwest of Las Vegas, Nevo The region is arid; mean annual precipitation at Lathrop Wells, 30 km south of the site, is only 7.4 centimeters (cm). The mean daily maximum temperature at Lathrop Wells in July, the hottest month, is 37 <span class=\"_Tgc _s8w\"><strong>°</strong></span><span class=\"_Tgc _s8w\"><strong></strong></span>C. The site is underlain by poorly stratified deposits of gravelly or silty sand and sandy gravel, and thick beds of clayey sediments. The total thickness of valley-fill deposits beneath the site is about 175 m; the unsaturated zone is about 85 m thick. Volumetric soil moisture to depths of 4 m ranges from 4 to 10 percent but commonly is in the range of 6 to 8 percent. Soil-water potential, measured to depths of 3 to 10 m, ranged from -10 to -70 bars. Unsaturated hydraulic conductivity computed from laboratory analyses of representative samples ranges from 10<sup>-13</sup> to 10<sup>-14</sup> centimeters per day (cm/d).</p><p>Evaporation studies over a 2-year (yr) period were used to calibrate a numerical procedure for analyzing long-term precipitation data and estimating annual water budgets during the 15-yr period 1962-76. This analysis (1) demonstrated that a potential exists for deep percolation (greater than 2 m), despite high annual evaporation demands, and (2) provided predictions of the time of year and the antecedent conditions that enhance the probability of deep percolation. Soil-moisture profiles obtained monthly over an 18-month (mo) period demonstrate that deep percolation does occur. Soil-moisture conditions antecedent to an observed deep-percolation event, and the time of year when the percolation occurred, support the interpretations based on long-term meteorological records.</p><p>Calculation of downward moisture movement through the waste-trench backfill material, on the basis of simplified assumptions, suggests that moisture could have penetrated as much as 6 m below land surface from 1963, when the oldest trenches were closed, to 1980, but that the moisture requirement for such penetration far exceeded the amount of moisture actually available. Steady-state downward movement of moisture at depths greater than 10 m and beneath the waste-burial trenches would be on the order of 4 cm per 1,000 yr, assuming a steady flux rate of 1x10<sup>-5</sup> cm/d.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/wsp2312","usgsCitation":"Nichols, W., 1987, Geohydrology of the unsaturated zone at the burial site for low-level radioactive waste near Beatty, Nye County, Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 2312, Report: v, 57 p.; 1 Plate: 20.00 x 28.53 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp2312.","productDescription":"Report: v, 57 p.; 1 Plate: 20.00 x 28.53 inches","numberOfPages":"66","costCenters":[{"id":465,"text":"Nevada Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":139190,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2312/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":28372,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2312/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28373,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2312/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","county":"Nye County","city":"Beatty","otherGeospatial":"Amargosa Desert","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1ae4b07f02db6a87f7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nichols, William D.","contributorId":98296,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nichols","given":"William D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":145131,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Maps of the potentiometric surface of the Upper Floridan aquifer in west-central Florida are prepared semiannually by the U.S. Geological Survey. Maps for May and September show, respectively, the potentiometric surface of the normally expected annual low and high water level conditions. Potentiometric surface maps have been prepared for January 1964, May 1969, May 1971 to 1974, and for each May and September since 1975. The potentiometric surface of the Upper Floridan aquifer is shown for September 1987. Most of the water level data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey during the period of September 14-18. Supplemental data were collected by other agencies and companies. The Upper Floridan aquifer is the principal source of potable water in the area. Water level measurements were made on approximately 1,000 wells and on several springs. The potentiometric surface is shown mostly by 5-ft contour intervals. In the Fernandina Beach area of Nassau County, a 30-ft interval is used to show a deep cone of depression. The potentiometric surface ranged from 129 ft above sea level in Polk County to 54 ft below sea level in Nassau County. Water levels in key wells ranged from several ft above to several ft below the May average in response to areal patterns of rainfall. The Castle Hayne aquifer is the major source of freshwater for much of coastal North Carolina where the aquifers underlying the Castle Hayne contain saltwater. A regional study of the Castle Hayne aquifer was conducted to provide definitive information on the declines in water levels and of saltwater intrusion in the area. A series of geohydrologic maps produced from the study, show the altitude of the top of the aquifer, location of saltwater in the aquifer, aquifer thickness, aquifer transmissivity, and confining-unit thickness. The history of groundwater pumpage can be compared with historical water levels in the aquifer. These geohydrologic, pumpage, and water level data can be used to develop estimates of aquifer and confining-unit hydraulic coefficients and to develop a groundwater flow model for the Castle Hayne aquifer. The model will increase the understanding of the groundwater flow system and also can be used to assess various groundwater development scenarios for the entire Castle Hayne aquifer.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr87571","usgsCitation":"Lyke, W., and Coble, R.W., 1987, Regional study of the Castle Hayne Aquifer of eastern North Carolina: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 87-571, 2 p. :maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr87571.","productDescription":"2 p. :maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":13634,"text":"South Atlantic Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":43523,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1987/0571/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":148696,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1987/0571/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"North Carolina","otherGeospatial":"Castle Hayne Aquifer","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -79.03564453124999,\n              33.65120829920497\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.03564453124999,\n              36.633162095586556\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.66308593749999,\n              36.633162095586556\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.66308593749999,\n              33.65120829920497\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.03564453124999,\n              33.65120829920497\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c447","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lyke, W.L.","contributorId":75551,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lyke","given":"W.L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":169950,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Coble, R. Its objectives were to document the hydrologic characteristics of representative undeveloped watersheds nationwide and to provide a comparative base for studying the effects of man on the hydrologic environment. The network, which consists of 57 streamflow gaging stations and one lake-stage station in 39 States, is planned for permanent operation. \r\n\r\nThis interim report describes streamflow characteristics at each bench-mark site and identifies time trends in annual streamflow that have occurred during the data-collection period. \r\n\r\nThe streamflow characteristics presented for each streamflow station are (1) flood and low-flow frequencies, (2) flow duration, (3) annual mean flow, and (4) the serial correlation coefficient for annual mean discharge. In addition, Kendall's tau is computed as an indicator of time trend in annual discharges. The period of record for most stations was 13 to 17 years, although several stations had longer periods of record. The longest period was 65 years for Merced River near Yosemite, Calif. \r\n\r\nRecords of flow at 6 of 57 streamflow sites in the network showed a statistically significant change in annual mean discharge over the period of record, based on computations of Kendall's tau. The values of Kendall's tau ranged from -0.533 to 0.648. An examination of climatological records showed that changes in precipitation were most likely the cause for the change in annual mean discharge.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/cir941","usgsCitation":"Lawrence, C., 1987, Streamflow characteristics at hydrologic bench-mark stations: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 941, v, 123 p. :ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir941.","productDescription":"v, 123 p. :ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":124498,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1987/0941/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":30798,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1987/0941/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a4e5e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lawrence, C.L.","contributorId":58263,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lawrence","given":"C.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147507,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Groundwater recharge occurs along the basin margins. Groundwater discharge occurs as evapotranspiration in the Rio Grande valley, pumpage, and groundwater flow to the Socorro basin. Open-space land use, which primarily is used for grazing livestock, occupies the majority of the basin. In the Rio Grande valley, agricultural and residential land uses are predominant; in the area near Albuquerque, the land also is used for commercial, institutional , and industrial purposes. The Albuquerque-Belen basin was divided into seven zones on the basis of water chemistry. These water-chemistry zones indicate that large variations in water chemistry exist in the basin as the result of natural processes. Groundwater in the majority of the Albuquerque-Belen basin has a relatively low susceptibility to contamination because the depth to water is &gt; 100 ft and there is virtually no natural mechanism for recharge to the groundwater system. Groundwater in the Rio Grande valley has a relatively high susceptibility to contamination because the depth to water is generally &lt; 30 ft and there are many types of recharge to the groundwater system. Changes in land use may cause changes in the chemical composition of recharge to the groundwater system. The relatively large concentrations of dissolved iron in the Rio Grande valley near Albuquerque may result from the change from agricultural land use to residential land use. Recharge associated with agricultural land use is relatively oxidized because the water is in equilibrium with the atmosphere, whereas recharge associated with residential land use (onsite waste-disposal effluent) is relatively reduced and has larger concentrations of organic carbon, biological oxygen demand, and chemical oxygen demand. The constituents in the onsite waste-disposal effluent could cause reducing conditions in the aquifer and the subsequent dissolution of iron and manganese oxides. Trace metals adsorbed to these iron and manganese oxides could be remobilized in groundwater after dissolution of the oxides.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri864174","usgsCitation":"Anderholm, S., 1987, Reconnaissance of hydrology, land use, ground-water chemistry, and effects of land use on ground-water chemistry in the Albuquerque-Belen basin, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 86-4174, Report: v, 37 p.; 3 Plate: 21.11 × 35.65 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri864174.","productDescription":"Report: v, 37 p.; 3 Plate: 21.11 × 35.65 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":54672,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4174/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":410581,"rank":6,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_36599.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":54671,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4174/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":54670,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4174/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":54673,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4174/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":158422,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4174/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Mexico","otherGeospatial":"Albuquerque-Belen basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -106.25,\n              35.75\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.25,\n              35.75\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.25,\n              34.25\n            ],\n            [\n              -106.25,\n              34.25\n            ],\n            [\n              -106.25,\n              35.75\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4ae4b07f02db624f0a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Anderholm, S. The main purpose of the program is to increase general-purpose geologic mapping throughout the Nation. By combining State and Federal resources for geologic mapping through this cooperative program, new mapping has been started, and both geologic and geophysical maps that resulted from the program have already been published. \r\n\r\nThe program grew from mapping projects in 18 States in fiscal year 1985 to a program involving 29 States in 1986, as the combined State and Federal resources in the program grew from about $2 million to nearly $3 million. Forty-seven participants, representing many government, academic, and industrial organizations, discussed the current state of knowledge of the features of marine mass wasting and of the interrelations of factors influencing them. These factors include sediment source, composition, textures, sedimentation rates, climatic and sea-level changes, gas and gas hydrate (clathrate) contents of sediments, geotechnical characteristics, oceanographic and morphological factors, ground-water processes, and seismic events. The part played by these factors in the processes and features of mass movement and the engineering considerations imposed by the emplacement of manmade structures on the sea floor were considered vital to the evaluation of hazards involved in offshore exploration and development. The conference concluded with a call for bold programs to establish the probability of occurrence and the quantitative importance of these factors and to devise more reliable means of measurement, particularly in place, of the characteristics of the sediment and features involved.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/cir961","usgsCitation":"1987, Conference on Continental margin mass wasting and Pleistocene sea-level changes, August 13-15, 1980: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 961, iv, 133 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir961.","productDescription":"iv, 133 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":31153,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1987/0961/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":117099,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1987/0961/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b12e4b07f02db6a2fa6","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Folger, David W.","contributorId":78349,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Folger","given":"David W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":745445,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hathaway, John C.","contributorId":35755,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hathaway","given":"John C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":810370,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2}]}}

A modified NURE {National Uranium Resource Evaluation) method will be used in place of the standard NURE method of the DOE that was used for the national assessment reported in October 1980. The modified method, here named the 'deposit-size-frequency' {DSF) method, is presented for the first time, and calculations by the two methods are compared using an illustrative example based on preliminary estimates for the first area to be evaluated under the MOU. The results demonstrate that the estimate of the endowment using the DSF method is significantly larger and more uncertain than the estimate obtained by the NURE method. We believe that the DSF method produces a more realistic estimate because the principal factor estimated in the endowment equation is disaggregated into more parts and is more closely tied to specific geologic knowledge than by the NURE method. \r\n\r\nThe DSF method consists of modifying the standard NURE estimation equation, U=AxFxTxG, by replacing the factors FxT by a single factor that represents the tonnage for the total number of deposits in all size classes. Use of the DSF method requires that the size frequency of deposits in a known or control area has been established and that the relation of the size-frequency distribution of deposits to probable controlling geologic factors has been determined. Using these relations, the principal scientist {PS) first estimates the number and range of size classes and then, for each size class, estimates the lower limit, most likely value, and upper limit of the numbers of deposits in the favorable area. Once these probable estimates have been refined by elicitation of the PS, they are entered into the DSF equation, and the probability distribution of estimates of undiscovered uranium endowment is calculated using a slight modification of the program by Ford and McLaren (1980). \r\n\r\nThe EIA study of the viability of the domestic uranium industry requires an annual appraisal of the U.S. uranium resource situation. During DOE's NURE Program, which was terminated in 1983, a thorough assessment of the Nation's resources was completed. A comprehensive reevaluation of uranium resource base for the entire United States is not possible for each annual appraisal. A few areas are in need of future study, however, because of new developments in either scientific knowledge, industry exploration, or both. Four geologic environments have been selected for study by the U.S. Geological Survey in the next several years: (1) surficial uranium deposits throughout the conterminous United States, (2) uranium in collapse-breccia pipes in the Grand Canyon region of Arizona, (3) uranium in Tertiary sedimentary rocks of the Northern Great Plains, and (4) uranium in metamorphic rocks of the Piedmont province in the eastern States. \r\n\r\nIn addition to participation in the National uranium resource assessment, the U.S. Geological Survey will take part in activities of the Nuclear Energy Agency of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and those of the International Atomic Energy Agency.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir994","usgsCitation":"Finch, W.I., and McCammon, R.B., 1987, Uranium resource assessment by the Geological Survey; methodology and plan to update the national resource base: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 994, iii, 31 p. :ill., maps ;26 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir994.","productDescription":"iii, 31 p. :ill., maps ;26 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":124738,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1987/0994/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":31043,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1987/0994/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a18e4b07f02db6053d3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Finch, Warren Irvin","contributorId":55794,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Finch","given":"Warren","email":"","middleInitial":"Irvin","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147891,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"McCammon, Richard B.","contributorId":107674,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McCammon","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147892,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Four sets of measurements were made from August 1985 to May 1986 at river discharges of about 2,220, 3 ,200, 9,200, and 18,000 cu ft/sec, which correspond to flow durations of 85, 70, 26, and 9%, respectively. The four sets of data were used to develop generalized procedures for estimating traveltime and peak concentrations that result from spillage of water-soluble substances at any point within the study reach. The procedure will provide the approximate traveltimes and concentrations of soluble substances during periods of relatively steady flow from 1,500 to 30,000 cu ft/sec. A sample problem and solution are presented for hypothetical situation in which 500 lbs of soluble contaminant are spilled at a highway bridge near Sandstone. The river flow was 3,000 cu ft/sec for this example. The estimated times required for the leading edge and peak concentration of the solute cloud to reach Stone Cliff (25.9 river mi) were determined to be 23 and 28.5 hours. The cloud would take about 17 hours to pass Stone Cliff and the peak concentration would be 100 micrograms/L.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri874012","usgsCitation":"Appel, D.H., and Moles, S.B., 1987, Traveltime and dispersion in the New River, Hinton to Gauley Bridge, West Virginia: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 87-4012, iv, 21 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri874012.","productDescription":"iv, 21 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":407653,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_46700.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":54707,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1987/4012/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":157554,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1987/4012/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"West Virginia","city":"Hinton","otherGeospatial":"Gauley Bridge, New River","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -81.2333,\n 37.6222\n ],\n [\n -80.8167,\n 37.6222\n ],\n [\n -80.8167,\n 38.1722\n ],\n [\n -81.2333,\n 38.1722\n ],\n [\n -81.2333,\n 37.6222\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4ce4b07f02db626a4d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Appel, David H.","contributorId":45290,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Appel","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":195545,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Moles, S.
