A nearly equal amount of water leaves the lake and of this, 130 acre-feet is by evaporation, 659 acre-feet is by surface runoff, and less than one acre-foot is by ground-water seepage. Based on these amounts of inflow and outflow, the theoretical water-renewal time of the lake is calculated to be 2.2 years. The contributions of inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus to the lake in a typical year from precipitation, surface inflow, and ground-water inflow is about 2,500 pounds of nitrogen and 49 pounds of phosphorus. The ability of a source rock to generate oil and gas is directly related to its kerogen content and thermal maturity; hence, thermal maturity is commonly used as an exploration tool. This publication consists of two parts: a coal rank map for the basinwide Cameo and Fairfield or equivalent coal zone and three cross sections showing the variation in a coal rank for the entire Mesaverde. Structure contours on the map show the top of the Rollins Sandstone Member of the Mesaverde Formation and its equivalent the Trout Creek Sandstone Member of the Iles Formation of the Mesaverde Group, which immediately underlie the Cameo and Fairfield zone. The structure contours show the fairly strong correlation between structure and coal rank in the basin, suggesting that maximum overburden was the key factor in determining the coal ranks. Even in the southern part of the basin where extensive plutonism occurred during the Oligocene, coal ranks still generally follow structure; indicating that the plutons had little affect on the coals. On the cross sections both the top of the Rollins and Trout Creek, and the top of the Mesaverde Formation/Group are shown.&nbsp;A complete analysis of the entire Mesaverde in the basin would require more information than is presently available.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/mf1575","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy","usgsCitation":"Nuccio, V.F., and Johnson, R.C., 1983, Preliminary thermal-maturity map of the Cameo and Fairfield or equivalent coal zone in the Piceance Creek Basin, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1575, 2 sheets: 53.70 x 37.38 inches and 36.69 x 30.43 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1575.","productDescription":"2 sheets: 53.70 x 37.38 inches and 36.69 x 30.43 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":182473,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1575.PNG"},{"id":327608,"rank":1,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1575/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":327609,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1575/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"257500","country":"United States","state":"Colorado","otherGeospatial":"Piceance Creek Basin","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -108.5,38.75 ], [ -108.5,40.5 ], [ -107.25,40.5 ], [ -107.25,38.75 ], [ -108.5,38.75 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aaae4b07f02db6697a7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nuccio, Vito F. vnuccio@usgs.gov","contributorId":853,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nuccio","given":"Vito","email":"vnuccio@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":265859,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Johnson, Ronald C. 0000-0002-6197-5165 rcjohnson@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6197-5165","contributorId":1550,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Johnson","given":"Ronald","email":"rcjohnson@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":164,"text":"Central Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":265860,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Model computations showed that irrigation of new lands in the Satus uplands would raise ground-water levels in lower Satus Creek basin and thereby increase the size of the waterlogged areas. The model also demonstrated that pumping water from wells, reducing the amount of irrigation water used in the lowlands, and stopping leakage from Satus No. 2 and 3 Pump Canals were all effective methods to alleviate present waterlogging in some parts of the basin and to counteract some of the anticipated ground-water-level rises that would be caused by irrigating the uplands. The proposed changes in water use affected model-computed ground-water levels most in the eastern part of the basin between Satus No. 2 and No. 3 Pump Canals. The effects on ground-water levels in the western part of the basin between Satus Creek and Satus No. 2 Pump Canal were smaller. Systematic Crone electromagnetic and self-potential surveys indicate that weakly conductive tabular bodies having a weak to moderate self-potential effect extend downdip from two discontinuously exposed, parallel ridges of mineralized quartzite. Crone electromagnetic data were quantitatively interpreted using characteristic parameter lines adapted for use at 1830 and 5010 Hz, the frequencies employed at Umm ar Rummf. Depths to the top of the conductors were computed to be from 20 to 40 m or about the thickness of the oxidized zone, which behaves as a variably conductive overburden. Both tabular conductors can also be traced geophysically to the north and south of the copper-bearing outcrops. The association of the geophysical anomalies with copper-mineralized rocks has been proved by drilling. \r\n\r\nReconnaissance MAXMIN electromagnetic profiles across the target using a wide coil separation show broad, low-amplitude anomalies that may indicate mineralized rocks at depth, and reconnaissance ground-magnetic profiles show strong total-field intensity anomalies associated with basaltic dikes of probable Tertiary age. In the central part of the area of investigation, these dikes produce large disturbances of the electrical fields.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83298","usgsCitation":"Sadek, H.S., and Blank, H.R., 1983, Geophysical investigations of the Umm ar Rummf copper prospect, Al Qunfudhah Quadrangle, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-298, iii, 37 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83298.","productDescription":"iii, 37 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144187,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0298/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38723,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0298/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38724,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0298/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38725,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0298/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38726,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0298/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38727,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0298/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38728,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0298/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38729,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0298/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac8e4b07f02db67c0c3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sadek, Hamdy S.","contributorId":19158,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sadek","given":"Hamdy","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162262,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Blank, H. It has been prepared to aid and encourage the field-oriented coal scientist to participate directly in petrographic coal-description activities. The objectives and past and current practices of coal description vary widely. These are briefly reviewed and illustrated with examples. Sampling approaches and techniques for collecting columnar samples of fresh coal are also discussed. The recommended procedures and methodology emphasize the fact that obtaining a good megascopic description of a coal bed is much better done in the laboratory with a binocular microscope and under good lighting conditions after the samples have been cut and quickly prepared. For better observation and cross-checking using a petrographic microscope for identification purposes, an in-place polishing procedure (requiring less than 2 min) is routinely used. Methods for using both the petrographic microscope and an automated image analysis system are also included for geologists who have access to such instruments. To describe the material characteristics of a coal bed in terms of microlithotypes or lithotypes, a new nomenclature of (V), (E), (1), (M). (S). (X<sub>1</sub>). (X<sub>2</sub>) and so on is used. The microscopic description of the modal composition of a megascopically observed lithologic type is expressed in terms of (VEIM); subscripts are used to denote the volume percentage of each constituent present. To describe a coal-bed profile, semiquantitative data (without microscopic study) and quantitative data (with microscopic study) are presented in ready-to-understand form. The average total composition of any thickness interval or of the entire coal bed can be plotted on a triangular diagram having V, E, and I+ M +S as the apices. The modal composition of any mixed lithologies such as (X<sub>1</sub>), (X<sub>2</sub>), and so on can also be plotted on such a triangular ternary diagram. Such diagrams can be used either for tracing compositional variations throughout a single coal-bed profile or for comparing variations between different coal beds.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir894","usgsCitation":"Chao, E., Minkin, J., and Thompson, C., 1983, Recommended procedures and methodology of coal description: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 894, iv, 31 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir894.","productDescription":"iv, 31 p.","numberOfPages":"36","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":139148,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/0894/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":271070,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/0894/report.pdf"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a74e4b07f02db644603","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Chao, E.C.","contributorId":47358,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Chao","given":"E.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148153,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Minkin, J.A.","contributorId":38588,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Minkin","given":"J.A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148152,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Thompson, C.L.","contributorId":12189,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Thompson","given":"C.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148151,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The estimates are based on the distributions of intensities associated with the earthquakes of 1811-12, 1843 and 1895 although the effects of other historical shocks are also considered. The resulting composite type intensity map for a maximum intensity XI is believed to represent the upper level of shaking likely to occur. Specific intensity maps have been developed for six cities near the epicentral region taking into account the most likely distribution of site response in each city. Intensities found are: IX for Carbondale, IL; VIII and IX for Evansville, IN; VI and VIII for Little Rock, AR; IX and X for Memphis, TN; VIII, IX, and X for Paducah, KY; and VIII and X for Poplar Bluff, MO. On a regional scale, intensities are found to attenuate from the New Madrid seismic zone most rapidly to the west and southwest sides of the zone, most slowly to the northwest along the Mississippi River, on the northeast along the Ohio River, and on the southeast toward Georgia and South Carolina. Intensities attenuate toward the north, east, and south in a more normal fashion. Known liquefaction effects are documented but much more research is needed to define the liquefaction potential.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83179","usgsCitation":"Hopper, M.G., Algermissen, S.T., and Dobrovolny, E.E., 1983, Estimation of earthquake effects associated with a great earthquake in the New Madrid seismic zone: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-179, 101 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83179.","productDescription":"101 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142903,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0179/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37302,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0179/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ae4b07f02db5fb8ec","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hopper, Margaret G. hopper@usgs.gov","contributorId":2227,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hopper","given":"Margaret","email":"hopper@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":159938,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Algermissen, Sylvester Theodore","contributorId":94300,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Algermissen","given":"Sylvester","email":"","middleInitial":"Theodore","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159940,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Dobrovolny, Ernest E.","contributorId":71980,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dobrovolny","given":"Ernest","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159939,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

To test the effects of additional irrigation development on water levels and streamflow , computer programs were developed that represent the surface-water system, soil zone, and saturated zone. A two-dimensional, finite-difference ground-water flow model of the 3,374 square-mile study area was developed and calibrated using steady-state and transient conditions. Three management alternatives were examined. First, 125,000 acre-feet of water would be diverted annually from the Platte River. During a water year in which flows are similar to those in 1957, months of zero streamflow at Grand Island increased from the historical 2, to 7. After 5 years of such low flows, in 36 nodes (997.4 acres per node) water levels declined more than 5 feet, with a maximum decline of 10.7 feet. A second alternative would allow no new ground-water development after 1980. The third alternative would allow irrigable but unirrigated land to be developed at an annual rate of 2, 5, and 8 percent and to apply irrigation water at 80, 100, and 120 percent of consumptive irrigation requirements. The maximum projected declines by 2020 are 119 and 139 feet, respectively, for the second and third alternatives. Copper-rich shale beds in the north part of the quadrangle contain 12.2 billion pounds (5.5 billion kilograms) of copper in well-studied deposits including 9.2 billion pounds (4.2 billion kilograms) that are economically minable by 1980 standards. At least several billion pounds of copper probably exist in other parts of the same shale beds, but not enough data are available to measure the amount. \r\n\r\nA small amount, about 250 million pounds (113 million kilograms), of native copper is known to remain in one abandoned mine, and additional but unknown amounts remain in other abandoned mines. About 13.25 billion tons (12.02 billion metric tons) of banded iron-formation averaging roughly 30 percent iron are known within 500 feet (152.4 meters) of the surface in the Gogebic, Marquette, and Iron River-Crystal Falls districts. A small percentage of that might someday be minable as taconite, but none is now believed to be economic. Some higher grade iron concentrations exist in the same iron-formations. Such material was the basis of former mining of iron in the region, but a poor market for such ore and depletion of many deposits have led to the decline of iron mining in the quadrangle. Iron mines of the quadrangle were not being worked in 1980. \r\n\r\nMany parts of the quadrangle contain belts of favorable host rocks for mineral deposits. Although deposits are not known in these belts, undiscovered deposits of copper, zinc, lead, silver, uranium, phosphate, nickel, chromium, platinum, gold, and diamonds could exist.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir887","usgsCitation":"Cannon, W.F., 1983, Mineral resource assessment of the Iron River 1° x 2° quadrangle, Michigan and Wisconsin: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 887, iii, 21 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir887.","productDescription":"iii, 21 p.","numberOfPages":"24","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":390061,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_23959.htm"},{"id":31201,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1983/0887/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":124548,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1983/0887/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Michigan, Wisconsin","otherGeospatial":"Iron River 1° x 2° quadrangle","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -90,\n              46\n            ],\n            [\n              -88,\n              46\n            ],\n            [\n              -88,\n              47\n            ],\n            [\n              -90,\n              47\n            ],\n            [\n              -90,\n              46\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac8e4b07f02db67c213","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cannon, William F. 0000-0002-2699-8118 wcannon@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2699-8118","contributorId":1883,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cannon","given":"William","email":"wcannon@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[{"id":245,"text":"Eastern Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":148183,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Petrographic relationships as well as the chemistry and U distribution of the titanomagnetite grains and organic matter imply that the U was introduced to the sediments after the organic matter was emplaced and before the sediments were compacted.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr838","usgsCitation":"Webster, J., 1983, Petrography of some Ambrosia Lake, New Mexico prefault uranium ores, and implications for their genesis: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-8, ii, 75 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr838.","productDescription":"ii, 75 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":146099,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0008/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39463,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0008/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae0e4b07f02db687eba","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Webster, James D.","contributorId":100859,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Webster","given":"James D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163427,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The stratification patterns in this 70 million cubic-meter impoundment were due to a temperature differences between inflowing water and reservoir water. Separation was observed at temperature differences of 0.5 degrees C in May 1980 and 1.0 degrees C in August 1980. The pathway taken by inflowing water through the reservoir was governed by the temperature-related density forces acting between the two water masses. Data collected during August 1980 to define differences in dye concentrations with depth at two fixed profile points in Gulf Island Pond showed average water velocity to be seven times faster near the bottom than near the surface. A concept of mass flow was used to analyze data collected at sites downstream from Gulf Island Dam where flow varied rapidly with time. This report presents the mathematical derivation of controid traveltime, skewness, and percentage recovery of dye mass as determined from mass versus time curves.
