This report, prepared by the U.S&gt; Geological Survey in cooperation with the Western Kansas Groundwater Management District No. 1,&nbsp; presents the results of the seventh in a series of studies that uses a statistical technique, called kriging, to produce hydrologic maps. </p><p>The kriging technique interpolates water-level altitudes at the center of each 1-square-mile section in the study area on the basis of water-level measurements from 164 observation wells.&nbsp; For this study, measurements made at each site during the winter months of 1985, 1986, and 1987 were averaged. These interpolated altitudes (1859 in all), along with bedrock-surface and base-year water-level altitudes were used to prepare a hydrologic map that illustrates percentage change in saturated thickness. </p><p>Saturated thickness, as used in this report, is the thickness of the High Plains Aquifer between the groundwater surface, as indicated by water-level altitudes, and the bedrock surface. Because irrigation development in west-central Kansas was minimal prior to 1950, the saturated thickness during 1950 represented a nearly static condition in the aquifer. The maps show locations of wells and test holes, surficial geology and geologic sections, water-table surface, soil permeability, and land use. The valley-fill aquifer in the Salamanca area serves approximately 7,000 people through two major distribution systems with an average daily pumpage of 1.2 million gal/day. The aquifer, composed of outwash sand and gravel, averages 60 ft in thickness and overlies as much as 200 ft of lacustrine silt and clay. The aquifer is recharged directly from precipitation and through seepage from streams. Average annual recharge to the aquifer from direct precipitation and infiltration of runoff from adjacent hillsides is estimated to be 13 inches or 0.6 million gal/day/sq mi. The glacial features in the Allegheny valley near Salamanca are associated with Illinoian and Wisconsin glaciations. Illinoian features consist of small, isolated exposures of outwash and till emplaced against the valley walls. Wisconsin features deposited during Altonian and Woodfordian Times of the Wisconsin consist mainly of end moraines and valley-train outwash. This is the primary process by which a stream replenishes the oxygen consumed in the biodegradation of organic wastes.</p><p>Prior to 1965, reaeration rate coefficients could be estimated only by indirect methods. In 1965, a direct method of measuring stream reaeration coefficients was developed in which a radioactive tracer gas was injected into a stream--the tracer gas being <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" data-mce-style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">desorbed</span> from the stream inversely to how oxygen would be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" data-mce-style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">absorbed</span>. The technique has since been modified by substituting hydrocarbon gases for the radioactive tracer gas.</p><p>This manual describes the slug-injection and constant-rate injection methods of performing gas-tracer desorption measurements. The Skedaddle study area encompasses 39,420 acres and the Dry Valley Rim study area encompasses 54,480 acres of Bureau of Land Management administered public land about 25 mi east of Susanville, California. The Skedaddle study area is bounded on the east by the Skedaddle road, on the north by the Smoke Creek Road, on the south by the Wendel road, and on the west by the rim west of Wendel Canyon. The Dry Valley Rim study area is bounded on the east by the lower Smoke Creek road, the Dry Valley road, and the Pipe Springs Road. The northern boundary is the Smoke Creek Ranch road, the southern boundary the Wendel road, and the western boundary the east-side Skedaddle road. Access to the study areas is provided by several light-duty dirt roads and ways that join the boundary roads. Elevations range from 3,800 (1158 m) to 7,552 ft (2302 m). Steep rim rock walls and talus-covered canyons are common in the eastern third of the Dry Valley Rim study area, and the western third of the Skedaddle study area, while the majority of both study areas is gradually sloping, covered only by sparse sagebrush. Existing geologic maps that cover the two study areas consist of Lydon and others (I960), Bonham (1969), and Diggles and others (1986).</p><p>The Skedaddle Wilderness Study Area consists of two parallel ridges, the Skedaddle Mountains and the Amedee Mountains. The ridges bound the Wendel and Spencer basins, an area of bleached and silicified rocks. Dry Valley Rim is a 17-mi (5.2 m)-long north-south-trending fault block that is situated 1,500 ft (457 m) above the Smoke Creek Desert to the east. The rim provides good exposure of the thick sequences of volcanic rocks that underlie the wilderness study area.</p><p>The rocks of the study areas consist mostly of Tertiary basalt, andesite, and lahar with minor amounts of rhyolitic ash-flow tuff, rhyolite, and dacite.
