The quadrangle encompasses an area of about 19,500 km<sup>2</sup> along and to the east of the east flank of the Sierra Nevada (fig. 1).</p><p>The Bouguer gravity anomaly map of the Walker Lake quadrangle was prepared by interpolating gravity values among 3,447 gravity stations established in the quadrangle and additional stations from adjacent quadrangles. An isostatic residual gravity map was prepared in order to reduce the effect; of interfering gravity gradients associated with the isostatic root of the Sierra Nevada. Methods of data reduction and factors that limit the accuracy of the gravity values are discussed in the following sections of this report.</p><p>The geologic interpretation of the gravity maps is based on previous studies, sample measurements, and correlation with other maps of the folio including a geologic map (Stewart and others, 1982) and a map showing Mesozoic plutonic rocks (John, 1983). The purpose of the interpretative part of this report is to demonstrate the correlation between gravity anomalies and the mapped geology, to assess the continuation of exposed geologic units beneath the surface, and to suggest the location of concealed subsurface bodies with mineral resource potential. A three-dimensional model of the Little Walker caldera (fig. 6) is used to illustrate a possible quantitative interpretation of a gravity anomaly. A concealed 25 by 75-km Cenozoic batholith along the east flank of the Sierra Nevada with possible lateral extensions is suggested in this report. A possible magmatic mechanism is discussed to augment contemporary explanations for the extensional origin of valleys. The possibility of lower gravity anomalies indicating thinner roof rocks in the basement beneath mountain ranges also is discussed. Furthermore, interpretation of gravity anomalies was applied in discussions with W.D. The curves are often used with the Habitat Evaluation Procedures (HEP) and are necessary components of the Instream Flow Incremental Methodology (IFIM) (Armour et al. 1984). Bovee (1986) described three categories of SI curves or habitat suitability criteria based on the procedures and data used to develop the criteria. Category I curves are based on professional judgment, with 1ittle or no empirical data. Both Category II (utilization criteria) and Category III (preference criteria) curves have as their source data collected at locations where target species are observed or collected. Having Category II and Category III curves for all species of concern would be ideal. In reality, no SI curves are available for many species, and SI curves that require intensive field sampling often cannot be developed under prevailing constraints on time and costs. One alternative under these circumstances is the development and interim use of SI curves based on expert opinion. The Delphi technique (Pill 1971; Delbecq et al. 1975; Linstone and Turoff 1975) is one method used for combining the knowledge and opinions of a group of experts. It lies beneath the Mogollon Rim between the communities of Payson and Young. The area is roughly a 4 by 15 mi strip along the deeply incised segment of Tonto Creek and along a 2 mi segment of Haigler Creek at its intersection with Tonto Creek. Elevations range from 2,960 ft in the lower Tonto Creek gorge near Gisela, in the southeastern part of the area, to 6,200 ft in the Green Valley Hills, in the northern part of the area. Local relief in the deep canyon of Tonto Creek is commonly greater than 1,000 ft. Hells Gate is the geographic name for the canyon at the confluence of Tonto Creek and Haigler Creek. Foot trails cross Tonto Creek at Hells Gate and between Houston Pocket and McDonald Pocket. Descent into Tonto Creek elsewhere is extremely difficult.</p>\n<p>The Hells Gate area lies in the central part of the Tonto Basin, which consists of Tonto Creek and tributaries draining the Mogollon escarpment and the northern Sierra Ancha. These streams dissect a table land which is the unconformable surface at the base of the Paleozoic section and the Mogollon Rim. This tableland is a part of the Colorado Plateau margin, which has been slightly structurally disrupted by late Cenozoic faulting and from which most of the Middle Proterozoic and</p>\n<p>Paleozoic strata have been stripped by subsequent erosion.
