According to entries in the national seismic catalog, there have been about 180 earthquakes which have caused some type of damage to the country. The most catastrophic earthquake occurred on March 26, 1812, on the Bocono fault system and caused widespread destruction in the cities of Merida and Caracas and claimed an estimated 30,000 lives.
\n
After the July 29, 1967, damaging earthquake (with a moderate magnitude of 6.3) caused widespread damage to the northern coastal area of Venezuela and to the Caracas Valley, the Venezuelan Government decided to establish a Presidential Earthquake Commission. This commission undertook the task of coordinating the efforts to study the after-effects of the earthquake. The July 1967 earthquake claimed numerous lives and caused extensive damage to the capital of Venezuela. In 1968, the U.S Geological Survey conducted a seismological field study in the northern coastal area and in the Caracas Valley of Venezuela. the objective was to study the area that sustained severe, moderate, and no damage to structures. A reported entitled Ground Amplification Studies in Earthquake Damage Areas: The Caracas Earthquake of 1967 documented, for the first time, short-period seismic wave ground-motion amplifications in the Caracas Valley. Figure 1 shows the area of severe damage in the Los Palos Grantes suburb and the correlation with depth of alluvium and the arabic numbers denote the ground amplification factor at each site in the area. the Venezuelan Government initiated many programs to study in detail the damage sustained and to investigate the ongoing construction practices. These actions motivated professionals in the academic, private, and Government sectors to develops further capabilities and self-sufficiency in the fields of engineering and seismology. Allocation of funds was made to assist in training professionals and technicians and in developing new seismological stations and new programs at the national level in earthquake engineering and seismology. A brief description of the ongoing programs in Venezuela is listed below. these programs are being performed by FUNVISIS and by other national organizations listed at the end of this article. During a 23-hour period on August 26 and 17, 1883, more than 4 cubic miles of volcanic debris exploded upward from Krakatau, resulting in the death of more than 36,000 people and producing catastrophic devastation. Kavachi is a composite stratovolcano that has been observed to erupt every year or two for at least the last 30 years (see photographs). An island formed in 1952, 1961, 1965, and 1978; but, in each case, it rapidly eroded below sea level. The latest eruption was observed by Solair pilots during the several weeks up to and including May 18, 1982.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"Taylor, B., 1983, Active submarine volcano sampled: Earthquake Information Bulletin (USGS), v. 15, no. 4, p. 148-149.","productDescription":"2 p.","startPage":"148","endPage":"149","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":316431,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Soloman Islands","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              154.62158203125,\n              -4.806364708499984\n            ],\n            [\n              154.31396484375,\n              -5.025282908609298\n            ],\n            [\n              156.81884765625,\n              -9.037002898469408\n            ],\n            [\n              159.76318359375,\n              -10.055402736564224\n            ],\n            [\n              162.79541015624997,\n              -10.984335146101955\n            ],\n            [\n              162.66357421875,\n              -10.206813072484595\n            ],\n            [\n              154.62158203125,\n              -4.806364708499984\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"15","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56b08fbbe4b010e2af2a5d2b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Taylor, B.","contributorId":36683,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Taylor","given":"B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":597097,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The furrows are 10 to 50 m apart, 4 to 13 m deep, linear, and nearly parallel in water depths of 2,000 m. They have steep walls and flat floors 3 to 5 m wide, of fine-grained sediment. Mid-range sidescan-sonar images show that similarly furrowed surfaces are found on nearby areas of the lower continental slope, not associated with canyons. The furrows are overlain in places by Pleistocene sediments. Sea-floor samples show that the sand has been derived (in situ) mainly from calcareous algae and molluscs. Zonation of the dominant sand producers is related to the present environmental setting; water depth has the greatest influence. Carbon-14 data (bulk sample) of cores indicate accumulation rates of slightly less than 1 mm/year for the last 5,000 years. Faunal studies show that the climate has remained constant over the past 5,000 years. The only changes in environmental conditions appear to have been an increase in water depth, changes in the patterns of water movement, and an increase in water temperature.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geological Institute","doi":"10.1306/212F8201-2B24-11D7-8648000102C1865D","usgsCitation":"Kindinger, J.L., Miller, R.J., and Holmes, C.W., 1983, Sedimentology of Southwestern Roads region, U.S. Virgin Islands: origin and rate of sediment accumulation: Journal of Sedimentary Research, v. 53, no. 2, p. 439-447, https://doi.org/10.1306/212F8201-2B24-11D7-8648000102C1865D.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"439","endPage":"447","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":296717,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Virgin Islands","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -65.00335693359375,\n              17.89250058043452\n            ],\n            [\n              -64.53369140625,\n              17.921249418623304\n            ],\n            [\n              -64.5172119140625,\n              17.612610761099077\n            ],\n            [\n              -65.00335693359375,\n              17.602139123350852\n            ],\n            [\n              -65.00335693359375,\n              17.89250058043452\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"53","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"549165d1e4b0d0759afaad97","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kindinger, Jack L. jkindinger@usgs.gov","contributorId":815,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kindinger","given":"Jack","email":"jkindinger@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":574,"text":"St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":536828,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Miller, Ronald J.","contributorId":42213,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miller","given":"Ronald","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":536829,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Holmes, Charles W.","contributorId":31071,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Holmes","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":218,"text":"Denver Federal Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":536830,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Because the surfaces of both organic and inorganic particles have high affinities for pollutants, such as certain trace metals, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and petroleum (Bothner et al., 1981a), suspended matter plays a major role in the transport and fate of pollutants introduced into shelf and coastal waters. Although the composition of bottom sediments on the shelf off the northeastern United States is reasonably well known, the mineralogical composition and distribution of inorganic suspended matter is less well studied.
","language":"English","publisher":"Clay Minerals Society","doi":"10.1346/CCMN.1983.0310110","usgsCitation":"Poppe, L., Hathaway, J.C., and Parmenter, C.M., 1983, Talc in the suspended matter of the northwestern Atlantic: Clays and Clay Minerals, v. 31, no. 1, p. 60-64, https://doi.org/10.1346/CCMN.1983.0310110.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"60","endPage":"64","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":296715,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Northwestern Atlantic","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -71.89453125,\n              44.15068115978091\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.837890625,\n              37.26530995561875\n            ],\n            [\n              -72.4658203125,\n              34.66935854524543\n            ],\n            [\n              -67.0166015625,\n              42.90816007196054\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.89453125,\n              44.15068115978091\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"31","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2024-04-02","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"549165d7e4b0d0759afaada2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Poppe, Lawrence J. lpoppe@usgs.gov","contributorId":2149,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Poppe","given":"Lawrence J.","email":"lpoppe@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":536812,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hathaway, John C.","contributorId":21542,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hathaway","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":536813,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Parmenter, Carol M.","contributorId":9284,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Parmenter","given":"Carol","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":536814,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

A persistent decrease of porosity with depth, similar to that of chalks of the Gulf Coast, occurs in these rocks. We make no attempt to differentiate depositional or diagenetic facies which produce scatter in the porosity-depth relationship; the dominant data trends thus are functions of carbonate rocks in general rather than of particular carbonate facies. Carbonate strata with less than 20% porosity are absent from the rocks studied here.

Aquifers and aquicludes cannot be distinguished on the basis of porosity. Although aquifers are characterized by great permeability and well-developed vuggy and even cavernous porosity in some intervals, they are not exceptionally porous when compared to other Tertiary carbonate rocks in south Florida. Permeability in these strata is governed more by the spacial distribution of pore space and matrix than by the total volume of porosity present.

Dolomite is as porous as, or slightly less porous than, limestones in these rocks. This observation places limits on any model proposed for dolomitization and suggests that dolomitization does not take place by a simple ion-for-ion replacement of magnesium for calcium. Dolomitization may be selective for less porous limestone, or it may involve the incorporation of significant amounts of carbonate as well as magnesium into the rock.

The great volume of pore space in these rocks serves to highlight the inefficiency of early diagenesis in reducing carbonate porosity and to emphasize the importance of later porosity reduction which occurs during the burial or late near-surface history of limestones and dolomites.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Association of Petroleum To construct the system, the transducers of a commercial side-scan system (frequency 105 kHz; pulse length 0.1 ms; horizontal beam width 1°; vertical beam width 20°; beam depressed 10° with respect to horizontal) were mounted 2 m above the sea floor on a vertical shaft that had a rotation speed of 0.5 rpm.
\n

\n
The radially collected sonar images are recorded linearly on a standard side-scan recorder. To convert the linear record to a radial record, the original moving record is photographed through a slit by a rotating camera, exposing a circular image on film.
\n

\n
Records that are collected with this system offer several advantages over records that are collected with towed systems. Bottom features are presented in nearly true plan geometry, and transducer yaw, pitch, and roll are eliminated. Most importantly, repeated observations can be made from a single point, and bedform movements of <50 cm can be measured. In quiet seas the maximum useful range of the system varies from 30 m (for mapping ripples) to 200 m (for mapping 10-m wavelength sand waves) to 450 m or more (for mapping gravel patches).
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0278-4343(83)90029-8","usgsCitation":"Rubin, D.M., McCulloch, D.S., and Hill, H.R., 1983, Sea-floor-mounted rotating side-scan sonar for making time-lapse sonographs: Continental Shelf Research, v. 1, no. 3, p. 295-301, https://doi.org/10.1016/0278-4343(83)90029-8.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"295","endPage":"301","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":296709,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"1","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"549165d1e4b0d0759afaad95","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rubin, David M. 0000-0003-1169-1452 drubin@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1169-1452","contributorId":3159,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rubin","given":"David","email":"drubin@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":536798,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"McCulloch, David S. dmccullo@usgs.gov","contributorId":3100,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McCulloch","given":"David","email":"dmccullo@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":536799,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Hill, Harry R.","contributorId":20745,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hill","given":"Harry","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":536800,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
