The program, known as the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) program, is designed to acquire and interpret information about a variety of water-quality issues.\r\nThe Central Oklahoma aquifer project is one of three ground-water pilot projects that have been started. The NAWQA program also incudes four surface-water pilot projects. The Central Oklahoma aquifer project, as part of the pilot NAWQA program, will develop and test methods for performing assessments of ground-water quality. The objectives of the Central Oklahoma aquifer assessment are: (1) To investigate regional ground-water quality throughout the aquifer in the manner consistent with the other pilot ground-water projects, emphasizing the occurrence and distribution of potentially toxic substances in ground water, including trace elements, organic compounds, and radioactive constituents; (2) to describe relations between ground-water quality, land use, hydrogeology, and other pertinent factors; and (3) to provide a general description of the location, nature, and possible causes of selected prevalent water-quality problems within the study unit; and (4) to describe the potential for water-quality degradation of ground-water zones within the study unit.\r\n\r\nThe Central Oklahoma aquifer, which includes in descending order the Garber Sandstone and Wellington Formation, the Chase Group, the Council Grove Group, the Admire Group, and overlying alluvium and terrace deposits, underlies about 3,000 square miles of central Oklahoma and is used extensively for municipal, industrial, commercial, and domestic water supplies. The aquifer was selected for study by the NAWQA program because it is a major source for water supplies in central Oklahoma and because it has several known or suspected water-quality problems. Known problems include concentrations of arsenic, chromium, selenium, and gross-alpha activity that exceed drinking-water standards. Suspected problems include possible contamination of the aquifer by oil-field brines and drilling fluids, pesticides, industrial chemicals, septic-tank effluent, fertilizers, and leakage from sewage systems and underground tanks used for storage of hydrocarbons.\r\n\r\nThere are four major components of the Central Oklahoma aquifer project. The first component is the collection and analysis of existing information, including chemical, hydrologic, and land-use data. The second component is the geohydrologic and geochemical investigations of the aquifer flow system. The third component is the sampling for a wide variety of inorganic, organic, and radioactive constituents as part a regional survey that will produce a consistent set of data among all ground-water pilot projects. These data can be used to: (1) Define regional ground-water quality within the Central Oklahoma aquifer, and (2) compare water quality in the Central Oklahoma aquifer to the water quality in the other ground-water study units of the NAWQA program. The fourth component is topical studies that will address, in more detail, some of the major water-quality issues pertaining to the aquifer.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr87235","usgsCitation":"Christenson, S.C., and Parkhurst, D., 1987, Ground-water quality assessment of the central Oklahoma Aquifer, Oklahoma; project description: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 87-235, iv, 30 p. :maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr87235.","productDescription":"iv, 30 p. :maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":146185,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1987/0235/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":41461,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1987/0235/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a8fe4b07f02db655319","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Christenson, S. A 50% increase in specific conductance throughout Malheur Lake from 1984 to 1985 resulted from an increase in sodium and chloride concentrations, probably caused by the flow of saline water from Harvey Lake and dissolution of evaporites in flooded areas around it. Arsenic and boron concentrations increased during the two years. Algal productivity was highest towards the center of Malheur Lake. Concentrations of major ions in the Malheur River during the 1985 irrigation season were dilute in upstream reaches because of flow releases from reservoirs; increasing in a downstream direction because of irrigation-return flow. Concentrations also increased with time during irrigation season, with the highest concentrations occurring in October after most diversions for irrigation were discontinued. Mass-balance equations were used to simulate mixing of Malheur Lake with Malheur River water to estimate the water quality that would occur at different points along Malheur River. Simulations of sodium and chloride concentrations and specific conductance values based on August river-flows during irrigation season, show a gradual increase from the headwaters downstream to Hope and greater increases downstream of Hope. After irrigation ceases, the simulated water quality becomes uniform throughout the river, because proposed lake flows are then the principal source of Malheur River flows. Arsenic and boron concentrations increase much more than expected between Namorf and Little Valley; thermal springs could be the source of arsenic and boron in this reach. Groundwater coming in contact with arsenic rich soils may also contribute to the elevated arsenic levels found in the river. At the end of the irrigation season, arsenic concentrations were measured at 85 microg/L in this 12-14 mi reach. Increasing inflows from Malheur Lake Should reduce arsenic levels between Namorf and the mouth, especially after irrigation ceases.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri864202","usgsCitation":"Fuste, L.A., and McKenzie, S.W., 1987, Water quality of the Malheur Lake system and Malheur River, and simulated water-quality effects of routing Malheur Lake water into Malheur River, Oregon, 1984-85: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 86-4202, Report: viii, 74 p.; 1 Plate: 23.11 × 30.40 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri864202.","productDescription":"Report: viii, 74 p.; 1 Plate: 23.11 × 30.40 inches","costCenters":[{"id":518,"text":"Oregon Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":56091,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4202/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":56090,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4202/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":159059,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4202/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":409621,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_36623.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Oregon","otherGeospatial":"Malheur Lake system and Malheur River","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -118.91683150468646,\n 43.39656636538285\n ],\n [\n -118.91683150468646,\n 43.24957188763429\n ],\n [\n -118.58294732181278,\n 43.24957188763429\n ],\n [\n -118.58294732181278,\n 43.39656636538285\n ],\n [\n -118.91683150468646,\n 43.39656636538285\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a25e4b07f02db60ed22","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fuste, L. Vegetation types were classified, and the areas covered by each type were computed from Landsat satellite digital-image analysis. Evapotranspiration was calculated by multiplying the area of each vegetation type by a corresponding water use rate adjusted for year-to-year variations in climate. The vegetation classification slightly underestimates the total vegetated area when compared to crop reports, because not all multiple cropping could be identified. The accuracy of evapotranspiration calculated from vegetation classification depends primarily on the correct classification of alfalfa and cotton because alfalfa and cotton have larger acreages and use more water/acre than the other crops in the valley. Consumptive use was calculated using a water budget for each of the 4 years. Estimates of evapotranspiration and consumptive use by vegetation, respectively, were: (1) 439,400 and 483,500 acre-ft in 1981, (2) 430,700 and 452,700 acre-ft in 1982, (3) 402,000 and 364,400 acre-ft in 1983, and (4) 406,700 and 373,800 acre-ft in 1984. Evapotranspiration estimates were lower than consumptive use estimates in 1981 and 1982 and higher in 1983 and 1984. Both estimates were lower in 1983 and 1984 than in 1981 and 1982. Yearly differences in estimates correspond most closely to significant changes in stage of the lower Colorado River caused by flood control releases in 1983 and 1984 and to changes in cropping practices. Groundwater recharge occurs along the basin margins. Groundwater discharge occurs as evapotranspiration in the Rio Grande valley, pumpage, and groundwater flow to the Socorro basin. Open-space land use, which primarily is used for grazing livestock, occupies the majority of the basin. In the Rio Grande valley, agricultural and residential land uses are predominant; in the area near Albuquerque, the land also is used for commercial, institutional , and industrial purposes. The Albuquerque-Belen basin was divided into seven zones on the basis of water chemistry. These water-chemistry zones indicate that large variations in water chemistry exist in the basin as the result of natural processes. Groundwater in the majority of the Albuquerque-Belen basin has a relatively low susceptibility to contamination because the depth to water is > 100 ft and there is virtually no natural mechanism for recharge to the groundwater system. Groundwater in the Rio Grande valley has a relatively high susceptibility to contamination because the depth to water is generally < 30 ft and there are many types of recharge to the groundwater system. Changes in land use may cause changes in the chemical composition of recharge to the groundwater system. The relatively large concentrations of dissolved iron in the Rio Grande valley near Albuquerque may result from the change from agricultural land use to residential land use. Recharge associated with agricultural land use is relatively oxidized because the water is in equilibrium with the atmosphere, whereas recharge associated with residential land use (onsite waste-disposal effluent) is relatively reduced and has larger concentrations of organic carbon, biological oxygen demand, and chemical oxygen demand. The constituents in the onsite waste-disposal effluent could cause reducing conditions in the aquifer and the subsequent dissolution of iron and manganese oxides. Trace metals adsorbed to these iron and manganese oxides could be remobilized in groundwater after dissolution of the oxides.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri864174","usgsCitation":"Anderholm, S., 1987, Reconnaissance of hydrology, land use, ground-water chemistry, and effects of land use on ground-water chemistry in the Albuquerque-Belen basin, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 86-4174, Report: v, 37 p.; 3 Plate: 21.11 × 35.65 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri864174.","productDescription":"Report: v, 37 p.; 3 Plate: 21.11 × 35.65 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":54672,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4174/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":410581,"rank":6,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_36599.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":54671,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4174/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":54670,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4174/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":54673,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4174/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":158422,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4174/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Mexico","otherGeospatial":"Albuquerque-Belen basin","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -106.25,\n 35.75\n ],\n [\n -107.25,\n 35.75\n ],\n [\n -107.25,\n 34.25\n ],\n [\n -106.25,\n 34.25\n ],\n [\n -106.25,\n 35.75\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4ae4b07f02db624f0a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Anderholm, S. These studies have led to many publications giving basic data and interpretations; of these, a series of 18 maps at 1:250,000 and 1:500,000 scales summarizing aspects of the geology, geophysics, geochemistry, and remote sensing is designated the CUSMAP (Conterminous United States Mineral Appraisal Program) folio. This circular uses the data shown on these maps to appraise the mineral resource potential of the quadrangle. The oldest rocks exposed in the Richfield quadrangle are small patches of Early Proterozoic (1.7 billion years old) gneiss and schist on the west side of the Mineral Mountains. These rocks presumably formed the basement on which many thousands of meters of Late Proterozoic, Paleozoic, and lower Mesozoic sedimentary strata were deposited. These rocks were deformed during the Late Cretaceous Sevier orogeny when Precambrian and Paleozoic strata in the western part of the quadrangle were thrust relatively eastward across Paleozoic and Mesozoic strata in the eastern part of the quadrangle. Late Cretaceous and early Tertiary highlands above the overthrust belt were eroded and much of the debris was deposited in broad basins east of the belt. Volcanism in Oligocene and earliest Miocene time formed an east-northeast-trending belt of calcalkalic volcanoes across the southern half of the quadrangle. In early Miocene time, the composition of the volcanic rocks changed to a bimodal assemblage of mafic rocks and high-silica alkali rhyolite that has been erupted episodically ever since. Syngenetic mineral resources developed during formation of both sedimentary and volcanic rocks. These include limestone and dolomite, silica-rich sandstone, metalliferous black shale, evaporite deposits, zeolite deposits, pumice, cinders and scoria, and evaporitic or diagenetic deposits in playa environments. Most of these deposits need to have markets established, or extraction and fabrication techniques developed, for them to be utilized. Most epigenetic deposits are of volcanogenic-hydrothermal origin. Deposits associated with calc-alkalic igneous activity largely contain Cu, Pb, Zn, Au, and Ag, and occur in a variety of types zoned around core intrusions. Younger deposits are mostly associated with silicic igneous centers belonging to the bimodal mafic-silicic igneous association. Resources associated with this latter group are likely to contain one or more of the elements Mo, W, U, Sn, Be, and F, as well as Pb, Zn, Au, and Ag. Alunite and kaolinite deposits are found at many mineralized centers. Most epigenetically mineralized areas expose only the upper, near-surface parts of the different hydrothermal systems; most of whatever mineral deposits formed in these systems probably still exist at depth, awaiting discovery. Our conclusion is that many mineralized areas have excellent possibilities for the occurrence of mineral resources. Two infiltration sites near Lockeford and Linden were selected on the basis of information collected during the first two phases of the study. Data from the infiltration tests indicate that the two sites are acceptable for recharge by the basin-spreading method. Infiltration rates ranged between 6.7 and 10.5 ft/day near Lockeford and between 2.6 and 11.2 ft/day near Linden. Interpretation of these data is limited by lack of information on the response of the saturated zone during testing and by the inherent difficulty in extrapolating the results of small-scale tests to larger long-term operations. Lithology is a major factor that controls infiltration rates at the test sites. The unsaturated zone is characterized by heterogeneous layers of coarse- and fine- grained materials. Clay layers of low hydraulic conductivity commonly form discontinuous lenses that may cause a transient perched water table to develop during recharge. Water level measurements from wells screened in the unsaturated zone indicate that the perched water table could reach the land surface after 2 and 5 months of recharge near Lockeford and Linden, respectively. These figures probably represent the minimum time necessary for saturation of the land. Another major factor that affects infiltration rates is the quality of the recharge water, particularly the suspended sediment content. The clogging action of suspended sediment may be minimized by: (1) pretreatment of recharge water in a settling pond, (2) adherence to a routine program of monitoring and maintenance, and (3) proper design of the recharge facility. Other factors that affect infiltration rates include basin excavation technique, basin shape, and maintenance procedures. Efficient operation of the recharge facility requires careful attention to the relation between subsurface water levels and infiltration rates.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri874164","usgsCitation":"Hamlin, S.N., 1987, Evaluation of the potential for artificial ground-water recharge in eastern San Joaquin County, California — Phase 3: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 87-4164, iv, 17 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri874164.","productDescription":"iv, 17 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":56336,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1987/4164/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":394485,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_46823.htm"},{"id":124290,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1987/4164/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"San Joaquin County","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -121.2992,\n 37.8292\n ],\n [\n -120.933,\n 37.8292\n ],\n [\n -120.933,\n 38.25\n ],\n [\n -121.2992,\n 38.25\n ],\n [\n -121.2992,\n 37.8292\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a08e4b07f02db5fa1ac","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hamlin, S. Four sets of measurements were made from August 1985 to May 1986 at river discharges of about 2,220, 3 ,200, 9,200, and 18,000 cu ft/sec, which correspond to flow durations of 85, 70, 26, and 9%, respectively. The four sets of data were used to develop generalized procedures for estimating traveltime and peak concentrations that result from spillage of water-soluble substances at any point within the study reach. The procedure will provide the approximate traveltimes and concentrations of soluble substances during periods of relatively steady flow from 1,500 to 30,000 cu ft/sec. A sample problem and solution are presented for hypothetical situation in which 500 lbs of soluble contaminant are spilled at a highway bridge near Sandstone. The river flow was 3,000 cu ft/sec for this example. The estimated times required for the leading edge and peak concentration of the solute cloud to reach Stone Cliff (25.9 river mi) were determined to be 23 and 28.5 hours. The cloud would take about 17 hours to pass Stone Cliff and the peak concentration would be 100 micrograms/L.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri874012","usgsCitation":"Appel, D.H., and Moles, S.B., 1987, Traveltime and dispersion in the New River, Hinton to Gauley Bridge, West Virginia: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 87-4012, iv, 21 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri874012.","productDescription":"iv, 21 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":407653,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_46700.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":54707,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1987/4012/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":157554,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1987/4012/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"West Virginia","city":"Hinton","otherGeospatial":"Gauley Bridge, New River","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -81.2333,\n 37.6222\n ],\n [\n -80.8167,\n 37.6222\n ],\n [\n -80.8167,\n 38.1722\n ],\n [\n -81.2333,\n 38.1722\n ],\n [\n -81.2333,\n 37.6222\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4ce4b07f02db626a4d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Appel, David H.","contributorId":45290,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Appel","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":195545,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Moles, S. Pequea Creek drains an intensive agricultural area of 154 sq mi in southeastern Pennsylvania, and enters the Susquehanna River 30 mi north of the Chesapeake Bay. The study included measurement of streamflow and collection of water and bottom material samples from seven sites in the basin during selected base flows and storms. Water samples were collected daily at a site near the mouth of Pequea Creek, and analyzed for suspended sediment, nitrogen and phosphorus species, organic carbon, and pesticides. Some groundwater samples also were collected and analyzed for nitrate. Annual yields measured from the basin during the study period were 1,950 ton/sq mi for suspended sediment, 13.8 ton/sq mi for total nitrogen, and 1.8 ton/sq mi for phosphorus. These yields are five times higher than any previously measured in the Susquehanna River basin. The discharges of all constituents monitored increased with increasing flow, indicated that a large amount of material in the basin is available for transport to streams during storms. The large yields of nitrogen and phosphorus are probably caused by the intensive agriculture in the basin coupled with large applications of fertilizer and manure to farm fields. Chemical analyses of rainfall samples indicate that precipitation was not a significant source of nitrogen and phosphorus. Excluding nitrate, all constituents measured were transported mainly during storms. Nitrate concentrations during base flow were as high as 10 mg/L as N--the Environmental Protection Agency standard for domestic water supplies. Groundwater sampled from farm wells had nitrate concentrations up to 28 mg/L as N. The largest concentrations of herbicides detected in Pequea basin were for 2,4-D, atrazine, and simazine. The maximum concentrations observed during storms were 1.2, 24, and 5.4 micrograms/L, respectively. The insecticides chlordane and DDT had mean concentrations of 0.02 and 0.01 micrograms/L, respectively. Lindane, PCB, and heptachlor slightly exceed maximum limits during storms.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri854250","usgsCitation":"Ward, J.R., 1987, Surface-water quality in Pequea Creek basin, Pennsylvania, 1977-79: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 85-4250, v, 66 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri854250.","productDescription":"v, 66 p.","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":410320,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_36395.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":59158,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1985/4250/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":159740,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1985/4250/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Pennsylvania","otherGeospatial":"Pequea Creek basin","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -76.408,\n 40.031\n ],\n [\n -76.408,\n 39.867\n ],\n [\n -75.88,\n 39.867\n ],\n [\n -75.88,\n 40.031\n ],\n [\n -76.408,\n 40.031\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ae4b07f02db5fbca7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ward, J. The Upper Floridan aquifer is the principal source of potable water in the area. Water level measurements were made on approximately 1,000 wells and on several springs. The potentiometric surface is shown mostly by 5-ft contour intervals. In the Fernandina Beach area of Nassau County, a 30-ft interval is used to show a deep cone of depression. The potentiometric surface ranged from 129 ft above sea level in Polk County to 54 ft below sea level in Nassau County. Water levels in key wells ranged from several ft above to several ft below the May average in response to areal patterns of rainfall. Most levels in the district were above the below average levels of May 1986. Rises of about 2 ft from May 1986 levels were common in the southern half of the District, and the potentiometric surface rose as much as 6 to 8 ft in places. Maps for May and September show, respectively, the potentiometric surface of the normally expected annual low and high water level conditions. Potentiometric surface maps have been prepared for January 1964, May 1969, May 1971 to 1974, and for each May and September since 1975. The potentiometric surface of the Upper Floridan aquifer is shown for September 1987. Most of the water level data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey during the period of September 14-18. Supplemental data were collected by other agencies and companies.
