The saturated thickness of the aquifer in most of the area, but not including the alluvium ranges from 500 to 3000 ft. The maximum saturated thickness of the alluvium penetrated by test holes was 63 ft. The water-table contours and depths to water are based primarily on groundwater-level measurements made during 1982 in 104 wells, most of which are located south of the Sweetwater River. Land-surface altitudes of springs and water-surface altitudes along the Sweetwater River and perennial reaches of creeks flowing northward from the Green and Ferris Mountains also were used as control for mapping the water table. The perennial reaches shown on the map are assumed hydraulically connected with the water table. They were identified from streamflow gain-and-loss measurements made during April and May 1982. It is based on measurements of water level or artesian pressure made in about 2 ,500 wells during the period May 13 to 24, 1985. Only measurements from tightly cased wells open exclusively to the Upper Floridan aquifer were used to make the map. These included 1,425 wells in Florida, 924 in Georgia, 133 in South Carolina, and 21 in Alabama. The potentiometric surface of the Upper Floridan aquifer changed little between 1980 and 1985. Significant water level declines were observed only in southwest Georgia and west-central Florida. Low rainfall during early 1985 and associated pumping for irrigation caused the declines in both areas. Aquifer delineation is necessary as an initial phase in the effective management of the State 's groundwater resources. Many of New York 's productive aquifers consist of unconsolidated deposits. In an effort to obtain complete coverage of all the significant unconsolidated aquifers in New York, the U.S. Geological Survey and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation began a cooperative study in 1985 to compile groundwater availability maps of each major river basin. This map delineates the unconsolidated aquifers that underlie the State 's northernmost eight counties and gives the estimated potential yield of properly constructed wells completed in these aquifers. In this report the studied area is called the 'wilderness study area', or simply the 'study area.' No identified mineral or energy resources occur within the study area. The southern part of the area has moderate mineral resource potential for undiscovered gold and silver, and the Woodruff Formation in the southern part of the area has high resource potential for undiscovered vanadium, zinc, selenium, molybdenum, and silver (fig. 1). This assessment is based on field geochemical studies in 1984 and 1985 by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and field geochemical studies and geologic mapping by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1984 and 1985. The remainder of the study area has low resource potential for undiscovered gold, silver, lead, zinc, manganese, tin, and molybdenum. The study area also has low resource potential for undiscovered oil and gas resources.\r\n\r\nThe Antelope Wilderness Study Area is about midway between Tonopah and Eureka, Nev., in the northern Hot Creek Range and southern Antelope Range of central Nevada. It is accessible by unimproved dirt roads extending 20 mi (miles) north from U.S. Highway 6 and 40 mi south from U.S. Highway 50 (fig. 2). Most of the study area consists of rugged mountainous terrain having approximately 2,600 ft (feet) of relief. The mountain range is a block tilted gently to the east and bounded on both sides by normal faults that dip steeply to moderately west and have major displacements. Most of the study area is underlain by a thick sequence of Tertiary volcanic rocks that predominantly consist of silicic ash-flow tuff, the Windous Butte Formation. Paleozoic and lower Mesozoic (see geologic time chart in appendix) marine sediments occur along the southern margin of the study area, and lower Paleozoic rocks are exposed in the northeast corner.\r\n\r\nThe areas of exposed Paleozoic-Mesozoic rocks along the southern margin of the study area have moderate mineral resource potential for gold and silver in sediment-hosted, disseminated, epithermal (low-temperature) gold-silver deposits (fig. 1). These rocks consist of folded and thrust-faulted, fine-grained clastic sediments and limestone and dolomite that locally have been brecciated and hydrothermally altered. The alteration (locally, strong silicification) and geochemical associations of these rocks indicate a favorable environment for such deposits. Exploration for disseminated gold deposits in the same geologic environment is currently being conducted just south of the study area. Sensitivities were derived by direct differentiation of closed form solutions for each of the odel, and by a time integral method for two of the models. Models are based on the advection-dispersion equation and include adsorption and first-order chemical decay. Boundary conditions considered are: a constant step input of solute, constant flux input of solute, and exponentially decaying input of solute at the upstream boundary. A zero flux is assumed at the downstream boundary. Initial conditions include a constant and spatially varying distribution of solute. One model simulates the mixing of solute in an observation well from individual layers in a multilayer aquifer system. Computer programs produce output files compatible with graphics software in which sensitivities are plotted as a function of either time or space. On each of four subreaches, dye-tracer measurements were made at approximately 50- and 85% flow duration in 1978, 1979, and 1985. The dye-tracer data were used to develop a method for estimating the traveltime and peak concentration of a solute spilled into the Illinois River. The estimates can apply to spills at any point within the study reach during a period of relatively steady discharge of from low to medium streamflow. A sample problem to demonstrate the estimating method is solved for a hypothetical situation in which 100,000 pounds of contaminant is spilled at a railroad crossing between Spring Valley and Hennepin, Illinois. Sediment and hydraulic data obtained from October 1984 to September 1985 (water year 1985) at selected sites on the Susitna, Chulitna, Talkectna and Yentna Rivers are summarized. Sediment data include measurements of suspended sediment and bedload discharge, and analyses of particle size distribution of suspended sediment, bedload, and bed material; hydraulic data include measurements of channel width, average depth and velocity of water, and water surface slope. Relations between water and sediment discharge are developed for each site. Sediment loads for water year 1985 were estimated for the Yentna , Chulitna, and Talkectna Rivers and for three sites on the Susitna River. About 31 million tons of sediment were transported to the Susitna River at Susitna Station during the year. The Yentna and Chulitna Rivers contributed about 21 million tons of sediment to the Susitna River.
