Annual rainfall varied markedly during the study: 1976 and 1977 water years had less than one half the normal rainfall; 1978 and 1980 water years had greater than normal rainfall; and 1975 and 1979 water years had nearly normal rainfall. The direction ground-water movement in the valley was found to be generally that of surface water. Dissolved nitrate concentrations were generally much less in areas not receiving wastewater applications than in areas that do. Specific conductance, dissolved solids, dissolved chloride, and dissolved nitrate were substantially less in the lower aquifers than in the upper aquifer in the Livermore wastewater application areas. In the Castlewood, Pleasanton, Veterans Administration Hospital, and Livermore wastewater applications areas ground-water quality was similar to the quality of effluent from wastewater treatment plants in the valley. Rainfall, soil, and geology appeared to be the main determinants of ground-water quality in the Castlewood and Dublin-San Ramon and Camp Parks Military Reservation areas. Wastewater application appeared to be the main determinant of ground-water quality in Pleasanton, Veterans Administration Hospital, and Livermore Municipal Airport areas. Comparison of ground-water quality in wastewater application areas with proposed State water-quality objectives for ground water in the Livermore-Amador Valley showed impaired water quality in all areas.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri824100","usgsCitation":"Sylvester, M.A., 1983, Land application of wastewater and its effect on ground-water quality in the Livermore-Amador Valley, Alameda County, California: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 82-4100, Report: vi, 53 p.; 2 Plates: 41.37 x 40.76 inches and 42.24 x 40.61 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri824100.","productDescription":"Report: vi, 53 p.; 2 Plates: 41.37 x 40.76 inches and 42.24 x 40.61 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":110155,"rank":5,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35608.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"35608"},{"id":58861,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1982/4100/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":58860,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1982/4100/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":58859,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1982/4100/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":124278,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1982/4100/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Alameda County","otherGeospatial":"Livermore-Amador Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122,\n              37.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.625,\n              37.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.625,\n              37.8333\n            ],\n            [\n              -122,\n              37.8333\n            ],\n            [\n              -122,\n              37.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b25e4b07f02db6aeeaa","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sylvester, M. Agar plugs containing fungal hyphae, removed from the edge of actively growing colonies, were placed in the depressions of spot plates containing 1.0, 10.0 and 100 mg/l of the candidate compounds for 15 or 60 min. After exposure, the plugs were transferred on to filter papers (0.45-μm pore) in a holder, rinsed, and then placed on cornmeal agar medium in tri-petri dishes. The plates were checked for mycelial growth after 48, 96 and 168 h of incubation in a lighted (400–800 μm) environmental control chamber at 20±2°C. Criteria for the acceptance or rejection of candidate aquatic fungicides for further study were based on the antifungal spectrum index (ASI) comparisons between respective compounds and malachite green after 48 h and the concentration level producing complete growth inhibition. Candidate compounds whose ASI was Jess than 50% that of malachite green after 48 h or did not inhibit growth at levels less than 100 mg/l were rejected. Fish samples from this site have consistently contained elevated levels of DDE since 1968. Surveys were made in 1976, 1978, and 1979 to determine the extent of organochlorine pesticide contamination in fishes and birds of the area. Freshwater fishes of Arroyo Colorado, a major waterway traversing the lower Rio Grande Valley, were highly contaminated with DDE and toxaphene residues compared to samples from other areas in the Valley; both DDE and toxaphene ranged up to 31.5 ppm wet wt in whole-fish composite samples. Median DDE residues in fish-eating bird carcasses from this area ranged up to 34 ppm wet wt, and 81 ppm in individual specimens. The levels of contaminants detected in fishes and birds were within, or above, the range producing adverse effects in certain species. The major sources of contamination to the Arroyo Colorado system likely stem from past and present use of persistent pesticides on surrounding croplands, and possibly from an abandoned pesticide plant at Mission, Texas.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Southwestern Naturalist","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","usgsCitation":"White, D.H., Mitchell, C.A., Kennedy, H., Krynitsky, A.J., and Ribick, M.A., 1983, Elevated DDE and toxaphene residues in fishes and birds reflect local contamination in the lower Rio Grande valley Texas USA: Southwestern Naturalist, v. 28, no. 3, p. 325-334.","productDescription":"pp. 325-334","startPage":"325","endPage":"334","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":173240,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"28","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a1be4b07f02db606ea2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"White, Donald H.","contributorId":97868,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"White","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":312971,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Mitchell, C. Achlya flagellata and Saprolegnia hypogyna were exposed to 1, 10, and 100 mg/L of malachite green to test each method. The cellophane transfer and agar plug transfer techniques had similar reliability and reproducibility in rating fungicidal activity, and were both superior to the agar dilution technique. The agar plug transfer and agar dilution techniques adequately projected in vivo activity of malachite green, but the cellophane transfer technique overestimated its activity. Overall, the agar plug transfer technique most accurately rated the activity of malachite green and was the easiest test to perform. It therefore appears to be the method of choice for testing aquatic fungicides.","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford Academic","doi":"10.1577/1548-8659(1983)45[24:SFFUIF]2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Bailey, T.A., 1983, Screening fungicides for use in fish culture: Evaluation of the agar plug transfer, cellophane transfer, and agar dilution methods: Progressive Fish-Culturist, v. 45, no. 1, p. 24-27, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1983)45[24:SFFUIF]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"24","endPage":"27","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":135846,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"45","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ce4b07f02db5fce7c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bailey, Tom A.","contributorId":90281,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bailey","given":"Tom","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":313108,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

In offshore Louisiana and Texas, most oil and gas is associated with structurally controlled traps on the crest or flanks of domes created by the diapiric movement of salt. These structures can be detected and mapped by seismic techniques that directly indicate favorable prospective areas. The characteristics of seismically defined structures provide information in advance of drilling about the probable size of reservoirs contained within these structures. Simple statistical relationships can be determined between the size, shape, and other attributes of structures detected by seismic mapping and the presence and size of petroleum and natural gas reservoirs. Gulf Coast OCS lease tracts presently are evaluated by the U.S. government using a Monte Carlo simulation procedure adapted from reservoir analysis. Specification of the parameters of the Monte Carlo model are obtained subjectively in advance of drilling and thus are highly uncertain. Comparisons of predrill predictions with postdiscovery reservoir evaluations show very low correlations. In contrast, predrill predictions based on regressions between seismic structural properties and reservoir volumes show highly significant correlations. In addition, statistical analysis of seismic structure is much simpler than the Monte Carlo procedure, and can be applied rapidly and inexpensively. A statistical analysis of the \"Pleistocene Trend\" of offshore Louisiana and Texas, an area of about 3 million acres, yielded results that are sufficiently encouraging to suggest that similar evaluations be made of the remaining Gulf Coast OCS and of OCS regions off of other coasts of the United States. ?? 1983 Plenum Publishing Corporation.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of the International Association for Mathematical Geology","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisherLocation":"Kluwer Academic Publishers-Plenum Publishers","doi":"10.1007/BF01030086","issn":"00205958","usgsCitation":"Davis, J., and Harbaugh, J., 1983, Statistical evaluation of oil and gas prospects in the outer continental shelf of the U.S. Gulf Coast: Journal of the International Association for Mathematical Geology, v. 15, no. 1, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF01030086.","startPage":"217","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":205058,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1007/BF01030086"},{"id":220713,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"15","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b972be4b08c986b31b911","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Davis, J.C.","contributorId":72121,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Davis","given":"J.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":361518,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Harbaugh, J.W.","contributorId":43912,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Harbaugh","given":"J.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":361517,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The northern part of the axial region of the CRST is complicated by structures that include reverse faults and associated folds, a large-amplitude mushroom fold, and belts of sharply flexed to overturned strata some of which are fault bounded. These structures, which also predate the Oligocene rocks, formed in a compressional regime that has been interpreted as resulting from thin-skinned gravitational gliding toward the axis of the CRST. \r\n\r\nStudy of the sparse Tertiary rocks that are scattered along the axial region of the CRST reveals abundant evidence of Oligocene and younger deformation. The chief evidence includes (1) widespread Oligocene and Miocene coarse clastic rocks, many of which are conglomerates, that attest to local and distant tectonism, (2) faults that range from high-angle structures generally with less than 100 m of normal displacement to low-angle attenuation faults some of which may have large displacements, and (3) open asymmetric folds. Together with the distribution of sheet-form bodies of ash-flow tuffs, the Oligocene stratigraphic record allows for paleogeographic reconstruction of a lacustrine basin across what is now the northern Confusion Range and one or more basins in the southern part of the CRST. The basins are inferred to have been fault controlled by reactivation of previously formed faults or steep fold flanks. They may have been localized by differential vertical movements similar to those that produced the older systems of folds and faults. Parts of early formed basins were cannibalized as local syndepositional deformation took place in the axial region of the CRST. \r\n\r\nBoth limbs of the CRST have been modified by folds that involve Oligocene rocks. Some of these folds appear to be genetically related to displacements on faults that bound them. They may record thin-skinned Neogene tectonic displacements toward the axis of the CRST. \r\n\r\nThe most intensely faulted and tilted rocks along the axis of the CRST are located in the Tunnel Spring Mountains where Miocene(?) extension on closely spaced listric faults produced as much as 70 percent extension locally. Three episodes of Oligocene-Miocene deformation, all interpreted to have formed in an extensional environment, are recognized in the Tunnel Spring Mountains. The nearby Burbank Hills area may have been involved in the same deformational episodes, though there the relationships are not as clear-cut nor does evidence occur of extreme extension. Tight asymmetric folds in the Burbank Hills are interpreted as drape structures formed over buried normal faults. Other structures along the southern CRST have fold-like forms, but they result from cross-strike alternations in fault-related tilt directions, and they formed in an extensional stress regime. Least-principal stress directions inferred from orientations of extensional structures vary from ENE-WSW in the southern Tunnel Spring Mountains to approximately E-W in the Disappointment Hills and NW-SE in selected areas east of the axis of the CRST. The size, geographic distribution, and new data on the age of areas of major extensional faulting preclude previously published interpretations that the extension is related to major east-directed overthrusting of the Sevier orogeny in areas east of the hinterland of west-central Utah.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr83504","usgsCitation":"Anderson, R.E., 1983, Cenozoic structural history of selected areas in the eastern Great Basin, Nevada-Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-504, Report: i, 47 p.; 2 Plates: 19.14 x 10.65 inches and 18.40 x 15.48 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83504.","productDescription":"Report: i, 47 p.; 2 Plates: 19.14 x 10.65 inches and 18.40 x 15.48 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":108459,"rank":5,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_14070.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"14070"},{"id":47206,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0504/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":47205,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0504/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":47204,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0504/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":151228,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0504/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada, Utah","otherGeospatial":"eastern Great Basin","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -114.708,\n 39.833\n ],\n [\n -114.708,\n 38.75\n ],\n [\n -113.647,\n 38.75\n ],\n [\n -113.647,\n 39.833\n ],\n [\n -114.708,\n 39.833\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e5e4b07f02db5e6ef3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Anderson, R.
