Since the fry of certain species of fish cannot tolerate even slight amounts of supersaturation, their water supplies must be degassed. Gas content can be reduced to subsaturated, sublethal levels by passing it through the vacuum degasser described here. The system includes a low-cost, flow-through unit easily capable of degassing (to less than saturated conditions) water flowing at 190 liters min−1. In tests completed to date, dissolved oxygen content was never reduced below 7 ppm.

Using the double diffusion precipitin test, a single band was observed when antigen from a sonicated virulent strain was reacted with antiserum against a sonicated, virulent strain absorbed with homologous, avirulent strain. The presence of the single band was eliminated by excess sonication.

Test diets containing either hydrolyzed or intact casein were fed with graded levels of added L-tryptophan (0.0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.0 g/100 g protein). Maximum growth occurred at 0.75 and 0.50 g tryptophan in fish fed hydrolyzed and intact casein, respectively. Changes in mineral and amino acid mixtures in the intact casein diet yielded a cation-anion (Na + K - Cl) balance of + 15.3 meq/100 g diet and pH of 6.44, compared with a balance of -21.3 and -25 meq, and pH 5.8 and 4.4 for unmodified hydrolyzed and intact casein diets, respectively. Analysis of growth by the polynomial regression function; Y = 0.16 + 0.429X - 0.26X2, where Y = mean daily gain in grams, and X = grams of added tryptophan/100 g protein, predicted that at least 0.58 g of tryptophan was needed for maximum weight gain. Analysis of apparent pathology-free fish by the function; Y = 34.33 + 147.33X = 83.87X2, where Y = percentage with no signs of deficiency, and X = grams of added tryptophan, predicted that 0.63 g tryptophan/100 g protein was needed for optimum health scores. Deletion of supplemental niacin did not affect fish response to tryptophan.

Growth of fry fed BioDiet for 2, 3, 4, or 6 weeks from first feeding and then fed diet 406 for the rest of the 14‐week study was also examined. Growth was fastest in fish fed exclusively diets 398 or 406 for 14 weeks, or BioDiet for 2 weeks followed by diet 406 for 12 weeks; survival was about 68, 82, and 92% respectively, for these three groups. These results indicate that in Atlantic salmon fry growth was most rapid and survival highest among fish fed BioDiet for the first 2 or 3 weeks followed by diet 406.

Measures of effective foraging activity, dietary niche breadth and dietary niche overlaps were obtained each month and were tested for correlation with estimates of the available seed resource.
Seeds were the only numerically important type of food in the diets of all species.
The ants partitioned the resource according to both seed species and seed size, although there was considerable overlap.
Pheidole xerophila had the smallest forager body size and is a specialist on small seeds because it harvested them in greater proportion than their rank in the soils and expanded its diet to larger seeds only when the abundance of small seeds declined.
When the abundance of the small seeds of Bouteloua barbata decreased, the middle-sized ant, Veromessor pergandei, showed a decrease in foraging activity, increase in niche breadth, and a decrease in overlap with P.xerophila.
Seed size preferences of V.pergandei did not vary seasonally, except that during the month of highest seed abundance, V.pergandei showed no size preference.
Pogonomyrmex rugosus was the largest ant; it preferred larger seeds and was inactive when small seeds were most abundant. Seasonal foraging activity and niche parameters were random in relation to seed abundance.
We suggest that nocturnal foraging by P.rugosus during the summer months was a response to interference with diurnal foraging by either predation frorn horned lizards or competition from V.pergandei.
Seasonal abundance of small seeds explains most of the seasonal foraging patterns of P.xerophila and V.pergandei. The summertime abundance of larger seeds during years of adequate precipitation may account for the seasonal activity patterns of P.rugosus.
This is the 3rd edition of the classic work \"The Ducks, Geese and Swans of North America,\" which was first published in December 1942. The original edition was authored by Francis C. Kortright with color plates by T. M. Shortt. An authoritative reference on North American waterfowl for many years, the book had become outdated as a result of major advances in the field of waterfowl biology. The need to update the 1st edition culminated in the publication in 1976 of a 2nd edition authored by Frank Bellrose. Readers interested in comparing features of the 1976 edition with other major recent works on North American waterfowl by P. A. Johnsgard and R. S. Palmer should read Weller (1977, Auk 94: 173).

The major lesion is unique because it closely resembles a lesion referred to as an aspergilloma. An aspergilloma is a single large granulomatous lesion that resembles a tumor and is caused by fungi of the genus Aspergillus.

The disease was detected in weekly surveillance transects and was responsible to the loss of about 850 geese during the winter of 1978–1979 at localized areas in southern Illinois. Necropsies performed on 480 geese that died at Union County Conservation Area and on 133 birds at Horseshoe Lake Conservation Area during January and February 1979 revealed that the majority of losses (649%) were caused by avian cholera. Lead poisoning was responsible for the death of 14% of the geese analyzed and the remaining 22%, most of which were decomposed, were undiagnosed. Lethal lead levels and Pasteurella multocida occurred concomitantly in a few instances.

Natural ingestion of food containing type E toxin by Ring-billed Gulls (Larus delawarensis) and the presence of type E toxin in blood from moribund gulls were demonstrated. Concurrent presence of type C and type E botulinal toxins was found in a die-off of Common Loons (Gavia immer). In combination with previous reported outbreaks, these incidents suggest that this disease is geographically widespread in Lake Michigan, and that environmental conditions conducive to type E botulinal toxin production and consumption occur in both summer and autumn.

Neutralizing antibody to this virus was detected in this captive population as early as 1975 and consistently thereafter through 1979. Exposure to the virus evidently occurred at least 2 1/2 years before the die-off, without causing any mortality diagnosed as being caused by inclusion body disease of cranes (IBDC). Overcrowding and environmental conditions in 1978 may have contributed to the deaths of certain species of cranes in one area and not in another. Mortality ratios and serological data suggest that crane species vary in their response to IBDC virus.

A virus isolated from one of these samples had a lipid coat and contained DNA. Electron microscopy confirmed that it was a herpesvirus. This appears to be the first report of a herpesvirus isolation from a wild bald eagle.

The course of the disease in birds ranges from acute to chronic. Affected birds may recover, become carriers of the organism and periodically shed it into the environment. This paper reports a case of chronic, fatal salmonellosis in an eared grebe.

The sample is digested with nitric and hydrochloric acids in a boiling water-bath. The solution is made ammoniacal and potassium iodide and silver nitrate are added. The mercury is extracted into isobutyl methyl ketone as the tetraiodomercurate(ll). Added silver is co-extracted with mercury and serves as a matrix modifier in the carbon-rod atomiser. The mercury in the isobutyl methyl ketone extract may be determined by either the flame- or the carbon-rod atomisation method, depending on the concentration level. The limits of determination are 0.05-10 p.p.m. of mercury for the carbon-rod atomisation and 1 -200 p.p.m. of mercury for the flame atomisation. Mercury values for reference samples obtained by replicate analyses are in good agreement with those reported by other workers, with relative standard deviations ranging from 2.3 to 0.9%. Recoveries of mercury spiked at two levels were 93-106%.
