The study is being conducted at Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey, where metal plating and metal etching wastes have contaminated part of the glacial stratified drift aquifers. Major areas of research at the site are described, including: (1) distribution and movement of chlorinated solvents in groundwater, (2) behavior of chlorinated solvents in the unsaturated zone, (3) geochemistry of the contaminated groundwater, and (4) microbial transformations of chlorinated solvents. Soil samples were collected in three fields with drainage systems of different ages (6, 15, 1.5 yr) and different Se concentrations in drain water (58, 430, 3700 micrograms/L respectively). Preliminary methods to determine total Se and estimate adsorbed Se were developed. Of the three fields, concentrations of soluble Se and salinity were highest in soils from the field drained for 1.5 yr and lowest in the field drained for 6 yr. The field drained for 1.5 yr also had the highest concentration of total Se in soil; a median of 1.2 microgram/gm. Of the total concentration of Se in soil from all three fields, the proportion of adsorbed Se and soluble Se ranged from 1 to 11% and &lt; 1 to 63%, respectively. Most of the variance in soluble Se is explained by salinity ( r sq &gt; 0.68) in saturation extracts of soils sampled from below the water table, reflecting evaporative concentration of Se and salinity. In contrast, most soluble salts and Se apparently have been leached from the unsaturated soils in the fields drained for 6 and 15 yr; therefore, the correlation was lower between Se and salinity in saturation extracts of those soils (r sq &lt; 0.33). Among soils from all three fields, the ratio of Se to salinity in saturation extracts increased with increasing salinity. The island is located about 60 miles east-southeast of Puerto Rico and about 40 miles south of St. Thomas and St. John (fig. 1). St. Croix has experienced a dramatic increase in its population over the last 25 years, growing from about 15,000 inhabitants in 1960 to about 54,000 in 1985 (personal communication, U.S. Virgin Islands Planning Office). Tourism development has also resulted in a large transient population with demands for services and facilities. The States affected most by these floods were Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. The flooding was the result of two distinct storms-one that brought heavy rains to the area from March 30 to April 2 and the other that brought additional precipitation from April 4 through April 8. Fortunately for the residents of Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, the two storms developed their greatest intensity and dropped the most precipitation over different parts of the three-State area. The first storm combined with meltwater from the snowpack to produce major flooding primarily in the western and south-central parts of Maine. The second storm produced flooding primarily in southern New Hampshire and northeastern and northwestern Massachusetts. Many streams in the affected area produced peaks that exceeded previously known flood heights and discharges, and the recurrence interval of many peak discharges exceeded 100 years. For larger scale maps, including topographic quadrangles and the State Base Map Series, conformal projections such as the Transverse Mercator and the Lambert Conformal Conic are used. Equal-area and equidistant projections appear in the National Atlas. Other projections, such as the Miller Cylindrical and the Van der Grinten, are chosen occasionally for convenience, sometimes making use of existing base maps prepared by others. Some projections treat the Earth only as a sphere, others as either ellipsoid or sphere.</p>\n<p>The USGS has also conceived and designed several new projections, including the Space Oblique Mercator, the first map projection designed to permit mapping of the Earth continuously from a satellite with low distortion. The mapping of extraterrestrial bodies has resulted in the use of standard projections in completely new settings. Several other projections which have not been used by the USGS are frequently of interest to the cartographic public.</p>\n<p>With increased computerization, it is important to realize that rectangular coordinates for all these projections may be mathematically calculated with formulas which would have seemed too complicated in the past, but which now may be programmed routinely, especially if aided by numerical examples.
