The National Geographic Names Data Base, a component of the Geographic Names Information System, currently contains most names and associated information recorded on the 1:24,000-scale (or largest scale available) topographic maps of the U.S. Geological Survey. The work involved in this initial compilation of names shown on the topographic-map series, and the development and editing of the National Geographic Names Data Base, is referred to as Phase I. Optimal use and effectiveness of an automated names system require that the names of features\nnot recorded on topographic maps be added. The systematic collection of names from other sources, including maps, charts, and texts, is termed Phase II. In addition, specific types of features not compiled during Phase I are encoded and added to the data base. Other names of importance to researchers and users, such as historical and variant names, are also included. Groundwater contamination, particularly from point sources, has been growing in importance in recent years. This report examines the physical mechanisms of solute transport, advection and dispersion, and explains how they relate to one another and the scale of study. The approach uses a preliminary analysis prior to collection of new data to focus on the technical problems to be addressed and to direct the initial collection of new data if warranted. The field investigation (collection of new data) progresses in stages that use the new knowledge and understanding gained from the preceding data collection to aid in further data collection as the study proceeds. A major premise of the approach is that the foundation of any analysis is a detailed quantitative definition of: (1) the groundwater flow field in three dimensions, and (2) the distribution of solutes in the contaminant plume in three dimensions at one point in time, or preferably at more than features of the groundwater flow field, and is an important tool for analysis. However, the scale of analysis for solute transport studies is usually much finer than the scale of analysis for groundwater flow alone. Therefore, an increase in detail of the velocity field is needed to provide for accurate calculations of pathlines in three-dimensional heterogeneous groundwater systems. Most of the area is underlain by a Mississippian carbonate sequence that includes two major aquifers, the Tuscumbia-Fort Payne aquifer and the Bangor aquifer. A third major aquifer, the Tuscaloosa aquifer of Cretaceous age, occurs in the southwest part of the area. The Mississippi carbonate aquifers are the Tuscumbia-Fort Payne aquifer which includes most Tuscumbia Limestone and the Fort Payne Chert, and a small area of the Monteagle Limestone, and the Bangor aquifer which includes the Bangor Limestone and Hartselle Sandstone. Both of these aquifers possess highly-variable secondary porosity and permeability related to fractures that have been enlarged, sometimes to cavernous proportions, due to solution processes. The Tuscaloosa aquifer consists of the Tuscaloosa Group, an unconsolidated clastic deposit that has relatively uniform primary porosity and permeability. Significant quantities of groundwater are available from each of the aquifers. Water levels at nearly 2 ,000 wells indicate that, for each aquifer, general groundwater movement is from topographically high to low areas. Each of the aquifers is recharged throughout its outcrop in the study area and is susceptible to contamination within the outcrop. Generalized topographic settings such as closed-contour depressions are identified as areas that are highly susceptible to contamination. Specific features such as sinkholes also are identified as extremely susceptible to contamination.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri874068","usgsCitation":"Bossong, C., and Harris, W.F., 1987, Geohydrology and susceptibility of major aquifers to surface contamination in Alabama; area 1: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 87-4068, Report: v, 34 p.; 1 Plate: 19.00 × 16.39 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri874068.","productDescription":"Report: v, 34 p.; 1 Plate: 19.00 × 16.39 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":395231,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_46744.htm"},{"id":55084,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1987/4068/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":55083,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1987/4068/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":126666,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1987/4068/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alabama","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -88.2267,\n 34.0444\n ],\n [\n -86.2833,\n 34.0444\n ],\n [\n -86.2833,\n 35\n ],\n [\n -88.2267,\n 35\n ],\n [\n -88.2267,\n 34.0444\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1be4b07f02db6a8c18","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bossong, C. The monitoring included the collection of the following types of data: chemical and isotopic composition of water and gases from springs, wells, and steam vents; temperatures in wells, springs, and steam vents; flow rates of springs and streams; water levels in wells; and barometric pressure and precipitation at several sites. In addition, reservoir temperatures for the geothermal system were estimated from computations based on chemical geothermometers applied to fluid samples from wells and springs. Estimates of thermal water discharged from springs were made on the basis of boron and chloride fluxes in surface waters for selected sites in the Casa Diablo area and along the Mammoth-Hot Creek drainage. These data are presented in tables and graphs. The Long Valley area was relatively quiescent throughout 1985 in terms of geodetic changes and seismic activity. As a consequence , the hydrologic system varied mainly in response to seasonal influences of temperature, atmospheric pressure, and precipitation. However, spring flows near Casa Diablo were influenced by pumping at the geothermal production well field nearby. Peak flows are higher in the urban rather than rural parts of the basin, and the percent of effective impervious area has a significant effect on storm runoff volumes and peaks. Water quality in the Chester Creek basin varies according to season and flow conditions. During low or base-flow conditions, concentrations of most water quality constituents measured are within State of Alaska drinking water standards, except for fecal coliform bacteria. During periods of high flow due to snowmelt or rainfall, concentrations of trace metal lead usually exceed recommended maximum levels. The primary sources of trace metal lead and suspended sediments are commercial areas , while the primary source of nutrients and fecal coliform bacteria is residential areas. Streamflow and water quality data collected at five sites representing different land-use categories were used to calibrate and verify three U.S. Geological Survey computer-based models: the Distributed Routing Rainfall-Runoff Model-Version II (DR3M-II), the Multi-Event Urban Runoff Quality Model (DR3M-QUAL), and the Precipitation Runoff Modeling Systems (PRMS). The PRMS can be used to simulate the effects of increased urbanization on daily flows. The DR3M-II can be used to simulate storm effects on small basins of < 40 acres. The DR3M-QUAL can be used to estimate seasonal loads of suspended sediment from basins of < 40 acres. Data were collected at five sites in Arvada Reservoir, one site in Ralston Creek, and two sites in Croke Canal. The study began in June 1983 (just before filling in May 1984) and continued through September 1985. The reservoir was thermally stratified on most sampling dates from April through September. Dissolved-oxygen concentrations ranged from 0 to 12.0 milligrams per liter, and the reservoir was anaerobic below the 10-meter depth during most of the summer. Secchi-disk-depth measurements ranged from 0.9 to 5.5 meters and generally increased during the study period, possibly because of decreases in nonalgal turbidity after the reservoir was filled. Water from the reservoir generally is of suitable quality for a raw-water-supply source and for maintenance of aquatic life. Total-nitrogen and total-phosphorus concentrations were small, and both were growth-limiting factors in the reservoir. The phytoplankton community was diverse, and the most dominant taxa were diatoms. Phytoplankton densities ranged from 1,400 to 29,000 cells per millimeter, and chlorophyll alpha concentrations ranged from 0.0 to 20.4 micrograms per liter. About 7 years after the upgrading of the treatment plant, traveltime, reaeration, and water quality characteristics were determined in Wilsons Creek and the James River. Traveltime was measured once in Wilsons Creek and twice in the James River during low-flow conditions. Traveltimes in the James River were estimated for discharge between 55 and 200 cu ft/sec at a site near Boaz. Reaeration coefficients were calculated for five reaches in Wilsons Creek and the James River using the modified-tracer technique. Calculated reaeration coefficients were compared with coefficients predicted by twelve empirical equations and one equation was chosen that best fit the data. Water quality data were collected during two 44-hr periods, August 14 to 16, 1984, and July 23 to 25, 1985. Samples were collected at the outflow of the Southwest Wastewater Treatment Plant at seven sites along Wilsons Creek and the James River. Dissolved-oxygen concentrations in Wilsons Creek and the James River were all larger than Missouri 's water quality standard of 5.0 mg/l. Ammonia concentrations and 5-day carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demands were small, which indicated that the oxygen consumption by oxidizing ammonia and carbonaceous organic materials would be insignificant. Measured streambed oxygen demand in the James River was largest directly downstream from Wilsons Creek. The sampling network was evaluated for variations in hydrogeology. Well depths, pumping rates, and the number of wells in the confined and unconfined parts of the aquifer system did not differ among land-use groups. The influences of hydrogeologic factors on water quality were evaluated without considering land use. Shallow wells had the highest specific conductance and major ion concentrations. Water from wells in the unconfined part of the aquifer system had the highest dissolved organic carbon concentration. Dissolved oxygen and nitrate concentrations were lowest, trace metals concentrations were highest, and phenols were detected most frequently in groundwater from undeveloped land. Major ions and trace metals concentrations were lowest, dissolved oxygen and copper concentrations were highest, and pesticides were most frequently detected in groundwater from agricultural land. Nitrate concentrations were highest and orthophosphate, nitrite, and purgeable organics were detected most frequently in groundwater from urban land. These water quality data were compared to data from the same aquifer system in southern New Jersey. Frequencies of detection of purgeable organics among land-use groups were similar in the northern and southern areas.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri874023","usgsCitation":"Barton, C., Vowinkel, E., and Nawyn, J., 1987, Preliminary assessment of water quality and its relation to hydrogeology and land use: Potomac-Raritan-Magothy aquifer system, New Jersey: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 87-4023, vi, 79 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri874023.","productDescription":"vi, 79 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":393165,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_46709.htm"},{"id":54873,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1987/4023/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":158426,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1987/4023/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Jersey","otherGeospatial":"Potomac-Raritan-Magothy aquifer","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -74.875,\n 40.125\n ],\n [\n -74.125,\n 40.125\n ],\n [\n -74.125,\n 40.625\n ],\n [\n -74.875,\n 40.625\n ],\n [\n -74.875,\n 40.125\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aaae4b07f02db66957c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Barton, Cynthia 0000-0001-8505-4347 cbarton@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8505-4347","contributorId":3675,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Barton","given":"Cynthia","email":"cbarton@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":622,"text":"Washington Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":195790,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Vowinkel, E. S. Geological Survey that show earthquake data of individual states or groups of states at the scale of 1:1,000,000. This map shows only those earthquakes with epicenters located within the boundaries of Ohio, even though earthquakes in nearby states or countries may have been felt or may have caused damage in Ohio.
\n
The data in table 1 were used to compile the seismicity map; these data are a corrected, expanded, and updated (through 1983) version of the data used by Algermissen (1969) for a study of seismic risk in the United States. The locations and intensities of some earthquakes were revised and intensities were assigned where none had been before. Many earthquakes were added to the original list from new data sources as well as from some old data sources that had not been previously used. The data in table 1 represent best estimates of the location of the epicenter, magnitude, and intensity of each earthquake on the basis of historical and current information. Some of the aftershocks from large earthquakes are listed, but not all, especially for earthquakes that occurred before seismic instruments were universally used.
\n
The latitude and longitude coordinates of each epicenter were rounded to the nearest tenth of a degree and sorted so that all identical locations were grouped and counted . These locations are represented on the map by a triangle. The number of earthquakes at each location is shown on the map by the arabic number to the right of the triangle. A Roman numeral to the left of a triangle is the maximum Modified Mercalli intensity (Wood and Neumann, 1931) of all earthquakes at that geographic location. The absence of an intensity value indicates that no intensities have been assigned to earthquakes at that location. The year shown below each triangle is the latest year for which the maximum intensity was recorded.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, Results of the appraisal provided an overview of water resources in Owens Valley; a better understanding of the groundwater system; and a framework for additional studies. Owens Valley is in east-central California and is the major source of water supply for the city of Los Angeles, located 233 mi to the south. Since 1913, with the completion of the first aqueduct, surface water has been diverted from the Owens River to Los Angeles. In 1970, a second Aqueduct was completed. Groundwater pumping was increased to supplement the water needed for the increasing population in Los Angeles. Most of the outflow of water from Owens Valley is from exports via the aqueduct system and by evapotranspiration loss; principal sources of water are runoff, inflow from Pleasant Valley Reservoir, and precipitation. Streamflow from the Sierra Nevada is a source of tremendous quantities of water to the valley. Pumping from more than 90 pump-equipped wells averaged about 98,000 acre-ft/yr from 1971 to 1983, but it was generally < 10,000 acre-ft/yr from 1932 to 1970, except during dry years. Groundwater pumping is primarily from deep wells adjacent to the volcanic rocks near Big Pine. Wells completed in the volcanic rocks yield large quantities of groundwater. Water level fluctuations in deep wells indicate a direct correlation with groundwater pumpage. Fluctuations in shallow wells are affected not only by pumping, but also by evapotranspiration and precipitation. The cause-and-effect relation of water level fluctuations in deep and shallow wells is not well understood and is partly the subject of a 5-yr study currently being conducted by Inyo County, the city of Los Angeles, and the U.S. Geological Survey, which emphasizes: (1) vegetation, (2) plant survivability, and (3) groundwater. It is hoped that this study will better define the quantity and availability of groundwater in the valley, as well as determine the effects of groundwater withdrawals on native vegetation. The principal aquifer system in the Socorro and La Jencia Basins consists of, in descending order, the shallow aquifer, the Popotosa confining bed, and the Popotosa aquifer. The minor aquifer systems, which are dominant along the basin margins, are the Socorro volcanics aquifer system and the Mesozoic-Paleozoic aquifer system. On the east side of the Socorro Basin, water enters the principal aquifer system from the Mesozoic-Paleozoic aquifer system. On the west side of the Socorro Basin, groundwater flows from the principal aquifer system in La Jencia Basin eastward to the principal aquifer system in the Socorro Basin. The volume of this flow is limited by the permeability of the minor aquifer systems and the Popotosa confining bed. A water budget indicates that if no change in groundwater storage occurs in the Socorro Basin, groundwater inflow to the basin is about 53,000 acre-feet per year greater than groundwater outflow. Dissolution of gypsum, calcite, and dolomite seems to control water quality in the Mesozoic-Paleozoic aquifer. Water with a chloride concentration of as much as 1,000 milligrams per liter and a specific conductance of as much as 6,700 microsiemens per centimeter at 25 C is present in the northern and southern parts of the Socorro Basin. These large chloride concentrations may indicate upward movement of water from deeper in the basin in these areas. The water with the large chloride concentration in the southern part of the basin also may be caused by leakage of geothermal waters along the Capitan Lineament. In the central part of the Socorro Basin, infiltration of excess irrigation water and inflow of groundwater from the basin margins control water quality. In this area, specific conductance generally is less than 1,000 microsiemens per centimeter. Water in La Jencia Basin generally is of the calcium sodium bicarbonate type with specific conductance less than 500 microsiemens per centimeter. Geologic data from more than 500 water supply and test wells were analyzed to define characteristics of the basin sediments that may affect the potential for land subsidence induced by groundwater withdrawal. The Tucson basin is a structural depression within the Basin and Range physiographic province. The basin is 1,000 sq mi in units area and trends north to northwest. Three Cenozoic stratigraphic unit--the Pantano Formation of Oligocene age, the Tinaja beds (informal usage) of Miocene and Pliocene age, and the Fort Lowell Formation of Pleistocene age--fill the basin. The Tinaja beds include lower, middle, and upper unconformable units. A thin veneer of stream alluvium of late Quaternary age overlies the Fort Lowell Formation. The Pantano Formation and the lower Tinaja beds accumulated during a time of widespread continental sedimentation, volcanism, plutonism, uplift, and complex faulting and tilting of rock units that began during the Oligocene and continued until the middle Miocene. Overlying sediments of the middle and upper Tinaja beds were deposited in response to two subsequent episodes of post-12-million-year block faulting, the latter of which was accompanied by renewed uplift. The Fort Lowell Formation accumulated during the Quaternary development of modern through-flowing the maturation of the drainage. The composite Cenozoic stratigraphic section of the Tucson basin is at least 20,000 ft thick. The steeply tilted to flat-lying section is composed of indurated to unconsolidated clastic sediments, evaporites, and volcanic rocks that are lithologically and structurally complex. The lithology and structures of the section was greatly affected by the uplift and exhumation of adjacent metamorphic core-complex rocks. Similar Cenozoic geologic relations have been identified in other parts of southern Arizona. The facilities are underlain by glacial and postglacial deposits that fill an ancestrial bedrock valley. The main plant facilities are on an elevated plateau referred to as the north plateau. Groundwater on the north plateau moves laterally within a surficial sand and gravel from the main plant building to areas northeast, east, and southeast of the facilities. The sand and gravel ranges from 1 to 10 m thick and has a hydraulic conductivity ranging from 0.1 to 7.9 m/day. Two separate burial grounds, a 4-ha area for low-level radioactive waste disposal and a 2.9-ha area for disposal of higher-level waste are excavated into a clay-rich till that ranges from 22 to 28 m thick. Migration of an organic solvent from the area of higher level waste at shallow depth in the till suggests that a shallow, fractured, oxidized, and weathered till is a significant pathway for lateral movement of groundwater. Below this zone, groundwater moves vertically downward through the till to recharge a lacustrine silt and fine sand. Within the saturated parts of the lacustrine unit, groundwater moves laterally to the northeast toward Buttermilk Creek.
