During 1980, 98 teleseismic events were recorded at as many as 53 sites in this area. P-wave residuals were calculated relative to a network-wide average residual for each event and are displayed on maps of the stations for each of four event-azimuth quadrants. Fluctuations in these map-patterns of residuals with approach azimuth combined with results of linear, three-dimensional inversions of some 2887 residuals indicate the following characteristics of the velocity structure of the southern Nevada region: 1) a low-velocity body exists in the upper crust 50 km northeast of Beatty, Nevada, near the Miocene Timber Mountain-Silent Canyon caldera complex. Another highly-localized low-velocity anomaly occurs near the southwest corner of the Nevada Test Site (NTS). These two anomalies seem to be part of a low-velocity trough extending from Death Valley, California, to about 50 km north of NTS. 2) There is a high-velocity body in the mantle between 81 and 131 km deep centered about i0 km north of the edge of the Timber Mountain caldera, 3) a broad low-velocity body is delineated between 81 and 131 km deep centered about 30 km north of Las Vegas, 4) there is a monotonic increase in travel-time delays from west to east across the region, probably indicating an eastward decrease in velocity, and lower than average velocities in southeastern Nevada below 31 km, and 5) considerable complexity in three-dimensional velocity structure exists in this part of the southern Great Basin. \r\n\r\nInversions of teleseismic P-wave travel-time residuals were also performed on data from 12 seismometers in the immediate vicinity of the Nevada Test Site to make good use of the closer station spacing i in that area. Results of these inversions show more details of the velocity structure but generally the same features as those found in the regional study.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82409","usgsCitation":"Monfort, M.E., and Evans, J.R., 1982, Three-dimensional modeling of the Nevada Test Site and vicinity from teleseismic P-wave residuals: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-409, 70 p. :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82409.","productDescription":"70 p. :ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142336,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0409/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38215,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0409/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a53e4b07f02db62b857","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Monfort, Mary E.","contributorId":93491,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Monfort","given":"Mary","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161296,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Evans, John R. jrevans@usgs.gov","contributorId":529,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Evans","given":"John","email":"jrevans@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":161295,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The analyses of samples collected routinely included: nutrients, total organic carbon, and 5-day biochemical oxygen demand, bimonthly; and trace metals, annually. The array of constituents sampled was expanded in October 1978 at three of the original nine stations to provide quality-of-water information for streams draining an industrial area: Rocky Creek near Belmont, Hunter Creek near Belmont, and Swift Creek at Facil. Data collected at these three sites now include: major chemical constituents, six times per year: radium-226, two times per year; and trace metals, one time per year. These constituents are determined in addition to nutrients, total organic carbon, and bio-chemical oxygen demand which continue to be analyzed six times per year. All results of analyses of the water-quality samples collected from January through December 1980 remained within, or near, previously measured ranges and water-quality fluctuations were similar to those noted from data collected since 1971. S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the San Joaquin County Flood Control and Water Conservation District, is evaluating the potential for artificially recharging the aquifer system in eastern San Joaquin County, California. Through a well canvass and analyses of existing data on geology, soils, and drillers logs, this study (phase one of three phases) resulted in identification of 20 sites for exploratory test drilling in areas potentially favorable for artificial recharge. Ten of the sites are in areas adjacent to the Mokelumne River, six are in areas adjacent to the Calaveras River and Mormon Slough, and four are north of Littlejohns Creek. Discharge from the aquifer, as base flow of the Pelican River, averaged 2.0 inches during 1979-80. Evapotranspiration is 22.4 inches per year. The chemical quality of ground water is suitable for irrigation, as measured by sodium-adsorption ratios, but locally high concentrations of calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate may cause clogging of well screens.</p>\n<p>Mathematical models of parts of the ground-water-flow system indicate that lake levels and streamflow may decline because of pumping wells. The exact water-level decline depends on the total number of wells, pumping rates, location of pumping wells with respect to one another and to surface-water bodies, duration of pumping, and the quantity of ground-water recharge. Sensitivity analyses of the models indicates that additional data on hydraulic conductivity, evapotranspiration, and recharge may increase the reliability of model results.</p>\n<p>Buried aquifers are known to be present in the area. The program's main purpose is to perform spectral analyses on digitized time-domain data. In addition, band-pass filtering of the data can be performed in the time domain. Various other processes such as autocorrelation can be performed to the time domain data in order to precondition them for spectral analyses. The frequency domain data can also be transformed back into the time domain if desired. Any data can be displayed on the CRT in graphic form using a variety of plot routines. A hard copy can be obtained immediately using the internal thermal printer. This study was undertaken to determine if any changes in flood response of the Red River basin can be documented. A review of the hydrologic setting, previous floods, flood-control measures, and probable effects of land-use changes shows that the flooding problem of the Red River basin is complex hydrologically, highly variable historically, and follows a regional pattern. Therefore, a change in flood response of the basin is difficult to identify. The discussion is somewhat hypothetical in that it is restricted to the physical occurrence of water with emphasis on water resources in each basin. Of course, the many potential constraints on water use (including economics, water quality, legal and other institutional factors) are necessarily secondary to the ultimate constraint, its physical occurrence. Perhaps the most obvious constraint is that of water rights and water laws. For example, \"mining\" of some of the ground water is herein assumed to be necessary for technically sound management and utilization of the water resource, but the hydrologic effects of such \"mining\" would require accommodation under water laws and agreements.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr8231","usgsCitation":"Miller, G., 1982, Water for western oil shale development: Potential local supplies: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-31, 6 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8231.","productDescription":"6 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143503,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0031/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":407297,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0031/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado, Utah","otherGeospatial":"Piceance Creek Basin, Uinta Basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -110.9893798828125,\n              40.17047886718109\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.2537841796875,\n              40.17047886718109\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.2537841796875,\n              40.925964939514294\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.9893798828125,\n              40.925964939514294\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.9893798828125,\n              40.17047886718109\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a08e4b07f02db5fa1f2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Miller, G.A.","contributorId":107671,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miller","given":"G.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161215,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Five regions of shallow magnetic source bottom depths were detected: 1) Secret Spring Mountain and National Lava Beds Monument area, 2) the Mount Shasta area, 3) the Eddys Mountain area, 4) the Big Valley Mountains area, and 5) an area northeast of Lassen Peak. Except for the Eddys Mountain area, all regions exhibiting shallow depths are suggested to be due to elevated Curie-point isotherms. \r\n\r\nThe elevated Curie-point depth beneath Secret Spring Mountain and the National Lava Beds Monument area was found to be 4-7 km BSL (Below Sea Level) and is an extension of a zone mapped beneath an area immediately to the north in Oregon. A similar depth was detected for the Mount Shasta area and the area northeast of Lassen Peak. A depth of 4-6 km BSL was detected beneath the Big Valley Mountains area. The shallow Curie-point depths beneath Secret Spring Mountain, Mount Shasta, Big Valley Mountains, and the area northeast of Lassen Peak appear to form a segmented Zone of elevated Curie-point isotherm depths which underlies the High Cascade Mountains and Modoc Plateau in north-central California. A small area of shallow depths to magnetic-source bottoms, 4-5 km BSL, beneath the Eddys Mountain area is attributed to a lithologic boundary rather than an elevated Curie-point isotherm. \r\n\r\nDeeper magnetic source bottom depths were mapped throughout the remainder of the study area, with depths greater than 9 km BSL indicated beneath Lassen Peak and greater than ii km BSL indicated beneath the Western Cascades, Eastern Klamath Mountains, and Great Valley.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82933","usgsCitation":"Couch, R.W., and Gemperle, M., 1982, Aeromagnetic measurements in the Cascade Range and Modoc Plateau of northern California; report on work done from December 1, 1980, to May 31, 1981: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-933, 34 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82933.","productDescription":"34 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141583,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0933/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36001,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0933/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae4e4b07f02db689ba4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Couch, Richard W.","contributorId":22351,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Couch","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157708,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gemperle, Michael","contributorId":47786,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gemperle","given":"Michael","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157709,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

During the 1980 summer season, approximately 1600 km of multisensored, high-resolution geophysical profile data were collected along a rectangular grid with 4.8 km line spacing. Interpretation of these data is presented on five maps showing bathymetry, sea-floor microrelief, ice-gouge characteristics, Holocene sediment thickness, and geologic structure to depths of approximately 1000 m. \r\n\r\nOn a broad scale, the seafloor is shallow and almost flat, although microrelief features produced by sediment transport and ice-gouge processes typically vary up to several meters in amplitude. Microrelief bedforms related to hydraulic processes are predominant in water depths less than 12 m. Microrelief caused by ice gouging generally increases with water depth, reaching a maximum of 2 m or more in water depths beyond the 20 m isobath. This intensely gouged area lies beneath the shear zone between the seasonal landfast ice and the mobile polar ice pack. \r\n\r\nThe thickness of recent (Holocene) sediment increases offshore, from 2 m near the Colville River delta to 30 m or more on the outer shelf. The thin Holocene layer is underlain by a complex horizon interpreted to be the upper surface of a Pleistocene deposit similar in composition to the present Arctic Coastal Plain. The base of the inferred Pleistocene section is interpreted to be a low-angle unconformity 100 m below sea level. Beneath this Tertiary-Quaternary unconformity, strata are interpreted to be alluvial fan-delta plain deposits corresponding to the Colville Group and younger formations of Late Cretaceous to Tertiary age. Numerous high-angle faults downthrown to the north trend across the survey area. With few exceptions, these faults terminate at or below the 100 m unconformity, suggesting that most tectonism occurred before Quaternary time. Acoustic anomalies suggesting gas accumulation are rare, and where identified typically occur adjacent to faults. A laterally continuous zone of poor seismic data occurs in the nearshore area and is interpreted to be caused by subsea permafrost. It consists mainly of alternating beds of fluvial sandstone and overbank mudstone with sandstone dominating in the lower part of the formation and mudstone in the upper part. At the outcrop, the sandstones in the formation exhibit almost all the characteristics that are considered favorable for the occurrence of sandstone-type uranium deposits, but only a few small deposits have been discovered in the Colorado-Utah area. The major deficiency of the Burro Canyon in these outcrop areas is the absence of a reductant such as carbonaceous debris, humic or humate materials, or pyrite. Reductants were probably removed during a period of extensive oxidation at the time of deposition and during a subsequent erosional episode prior to deposition of the Dakota Sandstone. \r\n\r\nThe formation reaches a lobate, inexactly located eastern margin that extends from near Meeker, Colorado, southward through the Piceance basin to near Aztec, New Mexico, in the northwestern part of the San Juan Basin. Along much of this distance, the formation is in the subsurface and has been penetrated by only a few drill holes. Along this eastern margin, the lobes project eastward where fluvial distributary streams built minor alluvial fans of relatively high-energy deposits out from the main axis of Burro Canyon stream deposition. The lower and distal reaches of these lobes may have survived the period of post depositional erosion and oxidation in a reduced condition because of low relief and the protection of a high water table. If so, the peripheral and distal parts of these lobes may have retained the precipitants necessary to form a uranium deposit. Two of the lobes extend into the southwest margin of the Piceance Basin and are considered the possible location of uranium deposits. Two additional lobes extend into the northwestern part of the San Juan Basin but have not been evaluated in this study.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82222","usgsCitation":"Craig, L., 1982, Uranium potential of the Burro Canyon Formation in western Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-222, 27 p., 4 over-size sheets, maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82222.","productDescription":"27 p., 4 over-size sheets, maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140506,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0222/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36016,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0222/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36017,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0222/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36018,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0222/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36019,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0222/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36020,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0222/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae0e4b07f02db688016","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Craig, L.C.","contributorId":61419,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Craig","given":"L.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157731,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The water is hard or very hard, averaging 170 milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate. The average concentrations of these constituents and hardness are least during late summer and early fall after periods of sustained high inflow.</p>\n<p>Thermal stratification begins to develop in Belton Lake in late February or early March. The water usually is stratified into three fairly distinct layers by early June, and stratification usually persists until September or October. Thermal stratification and seasonal variations in the concentrations of dissolved constituents in inflow result in stratification of the principal dissolved constituents. Dissolved solids in water at the surface of deep sites during summer differ from those at the bottom by about 40 milligrams per liter. Thermal stratification also results in significant seasonal and areal variations in dissolved oxygen, dissolved iron, dissolved manganese, total inorganic nitrogen, and total phosphorus.</p>\n<p>Oxygen used in the oxidation of dead organisms and other organic material near the bottom of the lake is not replaced during periods of summer stagnation. Consequently, water below depths of 35 to 40 feet (10.7 to 12.2 meters) usually contains less than 1.0 milligram per liter of dissolved oxygen during these periods.</p>\n<p>Water near the surface at most sites in the lake throughout the year usually contains less than 30 micrograms per liter of dissolved iron and 20 micrograms per liter of dissolved manganese. Reducing conditions during periods of summer stagnation result in tile dissolution of iron and manganese from the sediments in deep areas of the lake. The concentrations of both constituents are greatest near the bottom at site Ac, a deep site near Belton Dam. Iron concentrations at this site during the summer have ranged from 0 to 600 micrograms per liter and have averaged about 290 micrograms per liter; manganese concentrations have ranged from 0 to 540 micrograms per liter and have averaged about 320 micrograms per liter.</p>\n<p>Concentrations of total inorganic nitrogen and total phosphorus are greatest at deep sites during periods of summer stagnation when decay of aquatic organisms and chemical reduction of bottom sediments release the constituents to the water. The concentrations of total inorganic nitrogen and total phosphorus in the bottom stratum of water at site A c during the summer average about 0.75 milligram per liter of nitrogen and 0.10 milligram per liter of phosphorus. The concentrations of these constituents in the surface stratum at site A C during the summer average about 0.02 milligram per liter of nitrogen and 0.01 milligram per liter of phosphorus.</p>\n<p>The maximum concentrations of chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides or their degradation products detected in bottom sediments collected from the lake during four lake surveys included 1.1 micrograms per kilogram of DDT, 3.0 micrograms per kilogram of DDD, 11 micrograms per kilogram of DDE, and 2 micrograms per kilogram of chlordane.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Austin, TX","doi":"10.3133/ofr82650","usgsCitation":"Mendieta, H., and Pate, D.L., 1982, Water quality of Belton Lake, central Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-650, Report: vi, 70 p.; Plate: 10.52 x 16.63 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82650.","productDescription":"Report: vi, 70 p.; Plate: 10.52 x 16.63 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":38160,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0650/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38161,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0650/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":144093,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0650/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e478fe4b07f02db48a09f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mendieta, H.B.","contributorId":38965,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mendieta","given":"H.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161164,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Pate, Dale L.","contributorId":55007,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pate","given":"Dale","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161165,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The purpose of the reconnaissance was to determine selected quality characteristics of the surface- and ground-water of the landfill and contiguous area; and to assess, generally, if leachate produced by the decomposition of landfill wastes was adversely impacting the downgradient water quality. Sampling results indicated that several water-quality characteristics were present in landfill ground water at significantly higher levels than in ground water upgradient or downgradient from the landfill. Moreover, many of these water-quality characteristics were found at slightly higher levels at down gradient site 5 than at upgradient site 1 which suggested that some downgradient movement of landfill leachate had occurred. For example, chloride and alkalinity in ground water had average concentrations of 20 and 290 mg/L at background wells (site 1), 144 and 610 mg/L at landfill wells (sites 2 and 4), and 29 and 338 mg/L at downgradient wells (site 5). A comparison of the 1977-78 sampling results with the National Primary and Secondary Drinking Water Regulations indicated that levels of iron and color in ground water of the study area frequently exceeded national maximum contaminant levels, dissolved solids, turbidity, lead, and manganese occasionally exceeded regulations. Concentrations of iron and levels of color and turbidity in some surface water samples also exceeded National maximum contaminant levels.
