This study investigates coupling national scale airborne laser scanning (ALS) and acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) bathymetric survey data for generating stream rating curves. A digital terrain model was defined from these data and applied in a physically based 1-D hydraulic model to generate rating curves for a regularly monitored location in northern Sweden. Analysis of the ALS data showed that overestimation of the streambank elevation could be adjusted with a root mean square error (RMSE) block adjustment using a higher accuracy manual topographic survey. The results of our study demonstrate that the rating curve generated from the vertically corrected ALS data combined with ADCP data had lower errors (RMSE = 0.79 m3/s) than the empirical rating curve (RMSE = 1.13 m3/s) when compared to streamflow measurements. We consider these findings encouraging as hydrometric agencies can potentially leverage national-scale ALS and ADCP instrumentation to reduce the cost and effort required for maintaining and establishing rating curves at gauging station sites similar to the Röån River.
","language":"English","publisher":"IWA","doi":"10.2166/nh.2016.257","usgsCitation":"Norris, L., Kean, J.W., and Lyon, S., 2016, Modeling streamflow from coupled airborne laser scanning and acoustic Doppler current profiler data: Hydrology Research, v. 48, no. 4, p. 981-996, https://doi.org/10.2166/nh.2016.257.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"981","endPage":"996","ipdsId":"IP-075690","costCenters":[{"id":300,"text":"Geologic Hazards Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470677,"rank":0,"type":{"id":41,"text":"Open Access External Repository Page"},"url":"http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-135572","text":"External Repository"},{"id":342555,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"48","issue":"4","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":2,"text":"Denver PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2016-08-08","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"59439c94e4b062508e31a9b8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Norris, Lam","contributorId":192981,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Norris","given":"Lam","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":698369,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kean, Jason W. 0000-0003-3089-0369 jwkean@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3089-0369","contributorId":1654,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kean","given":"Jason","email":"jwkean@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":300,"text":"Geologic Hazards Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":698370,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Lyon, Steve","contributorId":192971,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Lyon","given":"Steve","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":698371,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Neglecting increased juvenile vulnerability will positively bias the mean productivity estimate, and neglecting increased vulnerability and estimation uncertainty will positively bias the year-to-year variance in productivity because raw age ratios are the product of sampling variation, the year-specific vulnerability, and year-specific reproductive success. Therefore, we estimated the effects of cumulative winter precipitation in the California Central Valley and the Mississippi Alluvial Valley on pintail (Anas acuta) and mallard (Anas platyrhnchos) reproduction, respectively, using hierarchical Bayesian methods to correct for sampling bias in productivity estimates and observation error in covariates. We applied the model to a hunter-collected parts survey implemented by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and band recoveries reported to the United States Geological Survey Bird Banding Laboratory using data from 1961 to 2013. We compared our results to previous estimates that used simple linear regression on uncorrected age ratios from a smaller subset of years in pintail (1961–1985). Like previous analyses, we found large and consistent effects of population size and wetland conditions in prairie Canada on mallard productivity, and large effects of population size and mean latitude of the observed breeding population on pintail productivity. Unlike previous analyses, we report a large amount of uncertainty in the estimated effects of wintering-ground precipitation on pintail and mallard productivity, with considerable uncertainty in the sign of the estimated main effect, although the posterior medians of precipitation effects were consistent with past studies. We found more consistent estimates in the sign of an interaction effect between population size and precipitation, suggesting that wintering-ground precipitation has a larger effect in years of high population size, especially for pintail. When we used the estimated effects in a population model to derive a sustainable harvest and population size projection (i.e., a yield curve), there was considerable uncertainty in the effect of increased or decreased wintering-ground precipitation on sustainable harvest potential and population size. These results suggest that the mechanism of cross-seasonal effects between winter habitat and reproduction in ducks occurs through a reduction in the strength of density dependence in years of above-average wintering-ground precipitation. We suggest additional investigation of the underlying mechanisms and that habitat managers and decision-makers consider the level of uncertainty in these estimates when attempting to integrate habitat management and harvest management decisions. Collection of annual data on the status of wintering-ground habitat in a rigorous sampling framework would likely be the most direct way to improve understanding of mechanisms and inform management.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wildlife Society","doi":"10.1002/jwmg.21124","usgsCitation":"Osnas, E.E., Zhao, Q., Runge, M.C., and Boomer, G., 2016, Cross-seasonal effects on waterfowl productivity: Implications under climate change: Journal of Wildlife Management, v. 80, no. 7, p. 1227-1241, https://doi.org/10.1002/jwmg.21124.","productDescription":"15 p.","startPage":"1227","endPage":"1241","ipdsId":"IP-070276","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":328312,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"80","issue":"7","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":10,"text":"Baltimore PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2016-08-05","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"57d13a39e4b0571647cf8db5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Osnas, Erik E. 0000-0001-9528-0866 eosnas@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9528-0866","contributorId":5586,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Osnas","given":"Erik","email":"eosnas@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":648120,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Zhao, Qing","contributorId":174370,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Zhao","given":"Qing","affiliations":[{"id":6621,"text":"Colorado State University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":648121,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Runge, Michael C. 0000-0002-8081-536X mrunge@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8081-536X","contributorId":3358,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Runge","given":"Michael","email":"mrunge@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":648119,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Boomer, G Scott","contributorId":172150,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Boomer","given":"G Scott","affiliations":[{"id":26994,"text":"Div. of Migratory Bird Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, MD","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":648122,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

Reconstruction quality is enhanced by incorporating tree-ring chronologies where high snowpack limits growth, which better represent the contribution of cool-season precipitation to flow than chronologies from trees positively sensitive to hydroclimate alone. The best performing reconstruction (back to 1609 CE) explains 59% of the historical variability and the longest reconstruction (back to 1502 CE) explains 52% of the variability. Droughts similar to the high-intensity, long-duration low flows observed during the 1920s and 1940s are rare, but occurred in the early 1500s and 1630s-1640s. The lowest Columbia flow events appear to be reflected in chronologies both positively and negatively related to streamflow, implying low snowpack and possibly low warm-season precipitation. High flows of magnitudes observed in the instrumental record appear to have been relatively common, and high flows from the 1680s to 1740s exceeded the magnitude and duration of observed wet periods in the late-19th and 20th Century. Comparisons between the Columbia River reconstructions and future projections of streamflow derived from global climate and hydrologic models show the potential for increased hydrologic variability, An analysis of regional skew using Bayesian weighted least-squares/Bayesian generalized-least squares regression was performed for Arkansas, Louisiana, and parts of Missouri and Oklahoma. The newly developed constant regional skew of -0.17 was used in the computation of annual exceedance probability discharges for 281 streamgages used in the regional regression analysis. Based on analysis of covariance, four flood regions were identified for use in the generation of regional regression models. Thirty-nine basin characteristics were considered as potential explanatory variables, and ordinary least-squares regression techniques were used to determine the optimum combinations of basin characteristics for each of the four regions. Basin characteristics in candidate models were evaluated based on multicollinearity with other basin characteristics (variance inflation factor < 2.5) and statistical significance at the 95-percent confidence level (p ≤ 0.05). Generalized least-squares regression was used to develop the final regression models for each flood region. Average standard errors of prediction of the generalized least-squares models ranged from 32.76 to 59.53 percent, with the largest range in flood region D. Pseudo coefficients of determination of the generalized least-squares models ranged from 90.29 to 97.28 percent, with the largest range also in flood region D. The regional regression equations apply only to locations on streams in Arkansas where annual peak discharges are not substantially affected by regulation, diversion, channelization, backwater, or urbanization. The applicability and accuracy of the regional regression equations depend on the basin characteristics measured for an ungaged location on a stream being within range of those used to develop the Management decisions in this context must be made in the face of uncertainty, often with limited capacity to collect information. Adaptive management (AM) combines management and monitoring, with the aim of updating knowledge and improving decision-making over time. We provide a guide for managers who may realize the potential of AM, but are unsure where to start. The urgent need for iterative management decisions, the existence of uncertainty, and the opportunity for learning offered by often highly-controlled captive environments create favorable conditions for AM. However, experiments and monitoring may be complicated by small sample sizes, and the ability to control the system, including stochasticity and observability, may be limited toward the wild end of the spectrum. We illustrate the key steps to implementing AM in threatened species management using four case studies, including the management of captive programs for cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) and whooping cranes (Grus americana), of a translocation protocol for Arizona cliffroses Purshia subintegra and of ongoing supplementary feeding of reintroduced hihi (Notiomystis cincta) populations. For each case study, we explain (1) how to clarify whether the decision can be improved by learning (i.e. it is iterative and complicated by uncertainty) and what the management objectives are; (2) how to articulate uncertainty via alternative, testable hypotheses such as competing models or parameter distributions; (3) how to formally define how additional information can be collected and incorporated in future management decisions.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","publisherLocation":"Kidlington, Oxford","doi":"10.1016/j.biocon.2016.04.026","usgsCitation":"Canessa, S., Guillera-Arroita, G., Lahoz-Monfort, J.J., Southwell, D.M., Armstrong, D., Chades, I., Lacy, R., and Converse, S.J., 2016, Adaptive management for improving species conservation across the captive-wild spectrum: Biological Conservation, v. 199, p. 123-131, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.biocon.2016.04.026.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"123","endPage":"131","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","ipdsId":"IP-073244","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":488512,"rank":0,"type":{"id":41,"text":"Open Access External Repository Page"},"url":"http://gateway.webofknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi?GWVersion=2&SrcApp=PARTNER_APP&SrcAuth=LinksAMR&KeyUT=WOS:000379559600017&DestLinkType=FullRecord&DestApp=ALL_WOS&UsrCustomerID=d4d813f4571fa7d6246bdc0dfeca3a1c","text":"External Repository"},{"id":326093,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"199","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":10,"text":"Baltimore PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"57a4591be4b0c4d7d8467438","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Canessa, Stefano","contributorId":149295,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Canessa","given":"Stefano","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":13336,"text":"University of Melbourne","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":644700,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Guillera-Arroita, Gurutzeta","contributorId":149296,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Guillera-Arroita","given":"Gurutzeta","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":13336,"text":"University of Melbourne","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":644701,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Lahoz-Monfort, Jose J.","contributorId":139965,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Lahoz-Monfort","given":"Jose","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":644702,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Southwell, Darren M","contributorId":149297,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Southwell","given":"Darren","email":"","middleInitial":"M","affiliations":[{"id":13336,"text":"University of Melbourne","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":644703,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Armstrong, Doug P.","contributorId":24675,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Armstrong","given":"Doug P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":644704,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Chades, Iadine","contributorId":149298,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Chades","given":"Iadine","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":12494,"text":"CSIRO Land and Water, Australia","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":644705,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Lacy, Robert C","contributorId":149299,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Lacy","given":"Robert C","affiliations":[{"id":12658,"text":"Chicago Zoological Society","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":644706,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7},{"text":"Converse, Sarah J. 0000-0002-3719-5441 sconverse@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3719-5441","contributorId":3513,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Converse","given":"Sarah","email":"sconverse@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":644699,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":8}]}}

The study provides detailed evaluation of porous intervals within these reservoirs and utilizes GIS to evaluate the potential spatial distribution of reservoir parameters and volume of CO2 that can be stored. This study also shows that incorporating spatial variation of parameters using detailed and robust datasets may improve estimates of storage resources when compared to applying uniform values across the study area derived from small datasets, like many assessment methodologies. Geospatially derived estimates of storage resources presented here (Pre-Punta Gorda Composite = 105,570 MtCO2; Dollar Bay = 24,760 MtCO2) were greater than previous assessments, which was largely attributed to the fact that detailed evaluation of these reservoirs resulted in higher estimates of porosity and net-porous thickness, and areas of high porosity and thick net-porous intervals were incorporated into the model, likely increasing the calculated volume of storage space available for CO2 sequestration. The geospatial method for evaluating CO2 storage resources also provides the ability to identify areas that potentially contain higher volumes of storage resources, as well as areas that might be less favorable.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/j.marpetgeo.2016.06.010","usgsCitation":"Roberts-Ashby, T., and Ashby, B.N., 2016, A method for examining the geospatial distribution of CO2 storage resources applied to the Pre-Punta Gorda Composite and Dollar Bay reservoirs of the South Florida Basin, U.S.A: Marine and Petroleum Geology, v. 77, p. 141-159, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.marpetgeo.2016.06.010.","productDescription":"18 p.","startPage":"141","endPage":"159","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","ipdsId":"IP-073465","costCenters":[{"id":241,"text":"Eastern Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470683,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.marpetgeo.2016.06.010","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":326136,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"South Florida Basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -82.94677734375,\n              28.17855984939698\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.419921875,\n              28.430052892335723\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.70581054687499,\n              26.990618722964737\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.617919921875,\n              25.21488107113259\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.4853515625,\n              24.156778233303413\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.99072265625,\n              24.87646991083154\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.803955078125,\n              25.96792222903405\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.94677734375,\n              28.17855984939698\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"77","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":9,"text":"Reston PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"57a5b8b0e4b0ebae89b7881b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Roberts-Ashby, Tina 0000-0003-2940-1740 troberts-ashby@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2940-1740","contributorId":173458,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Roberts-Ashby","given":"Tina","email":"troberts-ashby@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":241,"text":"Eastern Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":644776,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ashby, Brandon N.","contributorId":173459,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Ashby","given":"Brandon","email":"","middleInitial":"N.","affiliations":[{"id":27233,"text":"Washington Gas / WGL Holdings, Inc., Springfield, VA 22151","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":644777,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Streamflow statistics used to describe the low-flow characteristics are flow-duration discharges that are equaled or exceeded between 50 and 95 percent of the time during the 30-year base period 1984–2013. Record-augmentation techniques were applied to develop statistical models relating concurrent streamflow data at the measurement sites and long-term data from nearby continuous-record streamflow-gaging stations that were in operation during the base period and were selected as index stations. Existing data and subsequent low-flow analyses of the available data help to identify streams in under-represented geographic areas and hydrogeologic settings where additional data collection is suggested.

Low-flow duration discharges were estimated for 107 measurement sites (including long-term and short-term continuous-record streamflow-gaging stations, and partial-record stations) and 27 index stations. The adequacy of statistical models was evaluated with correlation coefficients and modified Nash-Sutcliff coefficients of efficiency, and a majority of the low-flow duration-discharge estimates are satisfactory based on these regression statistics.

Molokaʻi and Hawaiʻi have the fewest number of measurement sites (that are not located on ephemeral stream reaches) at which flow-duration discharges were estimated, which can be partially explained by the limited number of index stations available on these islands that could be used for record augmentation. At measurement sites on some tributary streams, low-flow duration discharges could not be estimated because no adequate correlations could be developed with the index stations. These measurement sites are located on streams where duration-discharge estimates are available at long-term stations at other locations on the main stream channel to provide at least some definition of low-flow characteristics on that stream. In terms of general natural streamflow data availability, data are scarce in the leeward areas for all five islands as many leeward streams are dry or have minimal flow. Other under-represented areas include central Oʻahu, central Maui, and southeastern Maui.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, This study quantifies projected changes in upper Colorado River basin (UCRB) groundwater recharge from recent historical (1950–2015) through future (2016–2099) time periods, using a distributed-parameter groundwater recharge model with downscaled climate data from 97 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 climate projections. Simulated future groundwater recharge in the UCRB is generally expected to be greater than the historical average in most decades. Increases in groundwater recharge in the UCRB are a consequence of projected increases in precipitation, offsetting reductions in recharge that would result from projected increased temperatures.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1002/2016GL069714","usgsCitation":"Tillman, F.D., Gangopadhyay, S., and Pruitt, T., 2016, Changes in groundwater recharge under projected climate in the upper Colorado River basin: Geophysical Research Letters, v. 43, no. 13, p. 6968-6974, https://doi.org/10.1002/2016GL069714.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"6968","endPage":"6974","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","ipdsId":"IP-075002","costCenters":[{"id":128,"text":"Arizona Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":326086,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Upper Colorado River Basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -111.95068359374999,\n              36.527294814546245\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.95068359374999,\n              42.032974332441405\n            ],\n            [\n              -106.3916015625,\n              42.032974332441405\n            ],\n            [\n              -106.3916015625,\n              36.527294814546245\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.95068359374999,\n              36.527294814546245\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"43","issue":"13","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":14,"text":"Menlo Park PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2016-07-08","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"57a307a7e4b006cb455561ad","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tillman, Fred D. 0000-0002-2922-402X ftillman@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2922-402X","contributorId":147809,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tillman","given":"Fred","email":"ftillman@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":128,"text":"Arizona Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":644665,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gangopadhyay, Subhrendu 0000-0003-3864-8251","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3864-8251","contributorId":173439,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Gangopadhyay","given":"Subhrendu","affiliations":[{"id":7183,"text":"U.S. Bureau of Reclamation","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":644666,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Pruitt, Tom 0000-0002-3543-1324","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3543-1324","contributorId":173440,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Pruitt","given":"Tom","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":27228,"text":"Reclamation","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":644667,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The U.S. Geological Survey is involved in a post-Hurricane Sandy effort to map and monitor the morphologic evolution of the shoreface along Fire Island and model the evolution of the wilderness breach as a part of the Hurricane Sandy Supplemental Project GS2-2B. During this study, bathymetry was collected with single-beam echo sounders and global positioning systems, mounted to personal watercraft, along the Fire Island shoreface and within the wilderness breach. Additional bathymetry was collected using backpack global positioning systems along the flood shoals and shallow channels within the wilderness breach.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. In order to confidently link stratigraphic signals to insolation periodicities, a description of the stratigraphy is required based on quantities that directly relate to intrinsic properties of the layers. We use stereo Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) from the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) to derive a characteristic of North Polar Layered Deposits (NPLD) strata that can be correlated over large distances: the topographic protrusion of layers exposed in troughs, which is a proxy for the layers’ resistance to erosion. Using a combination of image analysis and a signal-matching algorithm to correlate continuous depth-protrusion signals taken from DTMs at different locations, we construct a stratigraphic column that describes the upper ~500 m of at least 7% of the area of the NPLD, and find accumulation rates that vary by factors of up to two. We find that, when coupled with observations of exposed layers in orbital images, the topographic expression of the strata is consistently continuous through large distances in the top 300 – 500 m of the NPLD, suggesting it is better related to intrinsic layer properties than brightness alone.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","publisherLocation":"Hoboken, NJ","doi":"10.1002/2015JE004992","usgsCitation":"Becerra, P., Byrne, S., Sori, M.M., Sutton, S., and Herkenhoff, K.E., 2016, Stratigraphy of the north polar layered deposits of Mars from high-resolution topography: Journal of Geophysical Research E: Planets, v. 121, no. 8, p. 1445-1471, https://doi.org/10.1002/2015JE004992.","productDescription":"27 p.","startPage":"1445","endPage":"1471","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","ipdsId":"IP-070689","costCenters":[{"id":131,"text":"Astrogeology Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470692,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1002/2015je004992","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":325939,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"otherGeospatial":"Mars","volume":"121","issue":"8","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":14,"text":"Menlo Park PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2016-08-25","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"57a1c433e4b006cb45552c4a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Becerra, Patricio","contributorId":173341,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Becerra","given":"Patricio","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":644322,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Byrne, Shane","contributorId":53513,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Byrne","given":"Shane","affiliations":[{"id":7042,"text":"University of Arizona","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":644323,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Sori, Michael M.","contributorId":173342,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Sori","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":644324,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Sutton, Sarah","contributorId":173271,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Sutton","given":"Sarah","affiliations":[{"id":27205,"text":"U. Bathymetric change is a function of the regional sediment budget, long-term wave and current patterns, and episodic impact from high-energy events such as storms. Human modifications may also cause changes in seafloor elevation. This study, conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey in collaboration with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, evaluates bathymetric and volumetric change and sediment characteristics around Breton Island and Gosier Shoals located offshore of the Mississippi River Delta in Louisiana. This area has been affected by significant storm events such as Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Sedimentation patterns at Breton Island and offshore have also been modified by the excavation of a shipping channel north of the island. Four time periods are considered that encompass these episodes and include long-term change and short-term storm recovery: 1869–2014, 1869–1920, 1920–2014, and 2007–2014. Finally, sediment characteristics are reported in the context of seafloor elevation.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr20161069","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","usgsCitation":"Flocks, J.G., and Terrano, J.F., 2016, Analysis of seafloor change at Breton Island, Gosier Shoals, and surrounding waters, 1869–2014, Breton National Wildlife Refuge, Louisiana: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2016–1069, 27 p., https://dx.doi.org/10.3133/ofr20161069.","productDescription":"Report: vi, 27 p.; The interface is named after the International River Interface Cooperative (iRIC), the group that constructed the interface and many of the current solvers included in iRIC. The interface is entirely free to any user and currently houses thirteen models ranging from simple one-dimensional models through three-dimensional large-eddy simulation models. Solvers are only loosely coupled to the interface so it is straightforward to modify existing solvers or to introduce other solvers into the system. Six of the most widely-used solvers are described in detail including example calculations to serve as an aid for users choosing what approach might be most appropriate for their own applications. The example calculations range from practical computations of bed evolution in natural rivers to highly detailed predictions of the development of small-scale bedforms on an initially flat bed. The remaining solvers are also briefly described. Although the focus of most solvers is coupled flow and morphodynamics, several of the solvers are also specifically aimed at providing flood inundation predictions over large spatial domains. We used aerial and on-the-ground telemetry tracking, a digital landscape model, and resource selection functions to characterize seasonal movements and habitat use of 232 adult (>400 mm FL) Rainbow Trout across the complex, large (31,221 km2) Susitna River basin of south-central Alaska during 2003–2004 and 2013–2014. We found that fish overwintered in main-stem habitats near tributary mouths from November to April. After ice-out in May, fish ascended tributaries up to 51 km to spawn and afterward moved downstream to lower tributary reaches, assumedly to intercept egg and flesh subsidies provided by spawning salmonids in July and August. Fish transitioned back to main-stem overwintering habitats at the onset of autumn when salmonid spawning waned. Fidelity to tributaries where fish were initially tagged varied across seasons but was high (>0.75) in three out of four drainages. Model-averaged resource selection functions suggested that Rainbow Trout habitat use varied seasonally; fish selected low-gradient, sinuous, main-stem stream reaches in the winter, reaches with suitably sized substrate during spawning, larger reaches during the feeding season prior to the arrival of spawning salmonids, and reaches with high Chinook Salmon spawning habitat potential following the arrival of adult fish. We found little difference in movement patterns between males and females among a subset of fish for which sex was determined using genetic analysis. As most Rainbow Trout undertake extensive movements within and among tributaries and make use of a variety of seasonal habitats to complete their life histories, it will be critical to take a basinwide approach to their management (i.e., habitat protection and angling bag limits) in light of anticipated land-use changes.
","language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","doi":"10.1080/00028487.2016.1202320","usgsCitation":"Fraley, K.M., Falke, J.A., Yanusz, R., and Ivey, S.S., 2016, Seasonal movements and habitat use of Potamodromous Rainbow Trout across a complex Alaska riverscape: Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, v. 145, no. 5, p. 1077-1092, https://doi.org/10.1080/00028487.2016.1202320.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"1077","endPage":"1092","ipdsId":"IP-071545","costCenters":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":337502,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","volume":"145","issue":"5","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":12,"text":"Tacoma PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2016-08-12","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58c90126e4b0849ce97abce1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fraley, Kevin M.","contributorId":189243,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Fraley","given":"Kevin","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":684211,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Falke, Jeffrey A. 0000-0002-6670-8250 jfalke@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6670-8250","contributorId":5195,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Falke","given":"Jeffrey","email":"jfalke@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":684009,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Yanusz, Richard","contributorId":189244,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Yanusz","given":"Richard","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":684212,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Ivey, Sam S.","contributorId":105190,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ivey","given":"Sam","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":684213,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

We evaluated and compared net ecosystem exchange (NEE), latent heat flux (LE), and sensible heat flux (H) simulated by a suite of ecosystem models at five agricultural eddy covariance flux tower sites in the central United States as part of the North American Carbon Program Site Synthesis project. Most of the models overestimated H and underestimated LE during the growing season, leading to overall higher Bowen ratios compared to the observations. Most models systematically under predicted NEE, especially at rain-fed sites. Certain crop-specific models that were developed considering the high productivity and associated physiological changes in specific crops better predicted the NEE and LE at both rain-fed and irrigated sites. Models with specific parameterization for different crops better simulated the inter-annual variability of NEE for maize-soybean rotation compared to those models with a single generic crop type. Stratification according to basic model formulation and phenological methodology did not explain significant variation in model performance across these sites and crops. The under prediction of NEE and LE and over prediction of H by most of the models suggests that models developed and parameterized for natural ecosystems cannot accurately predict the more robust physiology of highly bred and intensively managed crop ecosystems. When coupled in Earth System Models, it is likely that the excessive physiological stress simulated in many land surface component models leads to overestimation of temperature and atmospheric boundary layer depth, and underestimation of humidity and CO2 seasonal uptake over agricultural regions.
","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/s10533-016-0219-3","usgsCitation":"Lokupitiya, E., Denning, A.S., Schaefer, K., Ricciuto, D., Anderson, R., Arain, M.A., Baker, I., Barr, A.G., Chen, G., Chen, J., Ciais, P., Cook, D., Dietze, M., El Maayar, M., Fischer, M., Grant, R., Hollinger, D., Izaurralde, C., Jain, A., Kucharik, C., Li, Z., Liu, S., Li, L., Matamala, R., Peylin, P., Price, D., Running, S., Sahoo, A., Sprintsin, M., Suyker, A., Tian, H., Tonitto, C., Torn, M., Verbeeck, H., Verma, S., and Xue, Y., 2016, Carbon and energy fluxes in cropland ecosystems: a model-data comparison: Biogeochemistry, v. 128, no. 1, p. 53-76, https://doi.org/10.1007/s10533-016-0219-3.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"53","endPage":"76","ipdsId":"IP-075638","costCenters":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470700,"rank":0,"type":{"id":41,"text":"Open Access External Repository Page"},"url":"https://www.osti.gov/biblio/1379544","text":"External Repository"},{"id":341422,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"128","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2016-06-03","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"593e25a3e4b0764e6c61b738","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lokupitiya, E.","contributorId":192091,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Lokupitiya","given":"E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":695469,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Denning, A. Mangrove areas were mapped prior to Haiyan using 30 m Landsat imagery and a supervised decision-tree classification. A time sequence of 250 m eMODIS data was used to monitor mangrove condition prior to, and following, Haiyan. Based on differences in eMODIS NDVI observations before and after the storm, we classified mangrove into three damage level categories: minimal, moderate, or severe. Mangrove damage in terms of extent and severity was greatest where Haiyan first made landfall on Eastern Samar and Western Samar provinces and lessened westward corresponding with decreasing storm intensity as Haiyan tracked from east to west across the Visayas region of the Philippines. However, within 18 months following Haiyan, mangrove areas classified as severely, moderately, and minimally damaged decreased by 90%, 81%, and 57%, respectively, indicating mangroves resilience to powerful typhoons.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/j.marpolbul.2016.06.080","usgsCitation":"Long, J., Giri, C., Primavera, J., and Trivedi, M., 2016, Damage and recovery assessment of the Philippines' mangroves following Super Typhoon Haiyan: Marine Pollution Bulletin, v. 109, no. 2, p. 734-743, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.marpolbul.2016.06.080.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"734","endPage":"743","ipdsId":"IP-059352","costCenters":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":337442,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Philippines","volume":"109","issue":"2","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":4,"text":"Rolla PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58c7afa2e4b0849ce9795eaa","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Long, Jordan 0000-0002-4814-464X jlong@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4814-464X","contributorId":3609,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Long","given":"Jordan","email":"jlong@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":223,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center (Geography)","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":683914,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Giri, Chandra cgiri@usgs.gov","contributorId":189128,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Giri","given":"Chandra","email":"cgiri@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":223,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center (Geography)","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":683915,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Primavera, Jurgene H.","contributorId":56151,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Primavera","given":"Jurgene H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":683916,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Trivedi, Mandar","contributorId":189130,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Trivedi","given":"Mandar","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":683917,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

There is a growing need to understand the effects of fire on the spatial distribution of permafrost and its associated ecological consequences. We focus on the effects of fire a decade after disturbance in a rocky upland landscape in the interior Alaskan boreal forest. Our main objectives were to (1) map near-surface permafrost distribution and drainage classes and (2) analyze the controls over landscape-scale patterns of post-fire permafrost degradation. Relationships among remote sensing variables and field-based data on soil properties (temperature, moisture, organic layer thickness) and vegetation (plant community composition) were analyzed using correlation, regression, and ordination analyses. The remote sensing data we considered included spectral indices from optical datasets (Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) and Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI)), the principal components of a time series of radar backscatter (Advanced Land Observing Satellite—Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (ALOS-PALSAR)), and topographic variables from a Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR)-derived digital elevation model (DEM). We found strong empirical relationships between the normalized difference infrared index (NDII) and post-fire vegetation, soil moisture, and soil temperature, enabling us to indirectly map permafrost status and drainage class using regression-based models. The thickness of the insulating surface organic layer after fire, a measure of burn severity, was an important control over the extent of permafrost degradation. According to our classifications, 90% of the area considered to have experienced high severity burn (using the difference normalized burn ratio (dNBR)) lacked permafrost after fire. Permafrost thaw, in turn, likely increased drainage and resulted in drier surface soils. Burn severity also influenced plant community composition, which was tightly linked to soil temperature and moisture. Overall, interactions between burn severity, topography, and vegetation appear to control the distribution of near-surface permafrost and associated drainage conditions after disturbance.
","language":"English","publisher":"MDPI","doi":"10.3390/rs8080654","usgsCitation":"Brown, D.R., Jorgenson, M., Kielland, K., Verbyla, D.L., Prakash, A., and Koch, J.C., 2016, Landscape effects of wildfire on permafrost distribution in interior Alaska derived from remote sensing: Remote Sensing, v. 8, no. 8, p. 1-22, https://doi.org/10.3390/rs8080654.","productDescription":"Article 654; 22 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"22","ipdsId":"IP-077121","costCenters":[{"id":120,"text":"Alaska Science Center Water","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470694,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.3390/rs8080654","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":337471,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","volume":"8","issue":"8","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":12,"text":"Tacoma PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2016-08-12","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58c7afa1e4b0849ce9795ea2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Brown, Dana R. However, recent investigations using dual water stable isotopes have shown an apparent ecohydrological separation between tree-transpired water and stream water. Here we present evidence for such ecohydrological separation in two tropical environments in Puerto Rico where precipitation seasonality is relatively low and where precipitation is positively correlated with primary productivity. We determined the stable isotope signature of xylem water of 30 mahogany (Swietenia spp.) trees sampled during two periods with contrasting moisture status. Our results suggest that the separation between transpiration water and groundwater recharge/streamflow water might be related less to the temporal phasing of hydrologic inputs and primary productivity, and more to the fundamental processes that drive evaporative isotopic enrichment of residual soil water within the soil matrix. The lack of an evaporative signature of both groundwater and streams in the study area suggests that these water balance components have a water source that is transported quickly to deeper subsurface storage compared to waters that trees use. A Bayesian mixing model used to partition source water proportions of xylem water showed that groundwater contribution was greater for valley-bottom, riparian trees than for ridge-top trees. Groundwater contribution was also greater at the xeric site than at the mesic–hydric site. These model results (1) underline the utility of a simple linear mixing model, implemented in a Bayesian inference framework, in quantifying source water contributions at sites with contrasting physiographic characteristics, and (2) highlight the informed judgement that should be made in interpreting mixing model results, of import particularly in surveying groundwater use patterns by vegetation from regional to global scales.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1002/hyp.10841","usgsCitation":"Evaristo, J., McDonnell, J.J., Scholl, M.A., Bruijnzeel, L., and Chun, K.P., 2016, Insights into plant water uptake from xylem-water isotope measurements in two tropical catchments with contrasting moisture conditions: Hydrological Processes, v. 30, no. 18, p. 3210-3227, https://doi.org/10.1002/hyp.10841.","productDescription":"18 p.","startPage":"3210","endPage":"3227","ipdsId":"IP-069760","costCenters":[{"id":436,"text":"National Research Program - Eastern Branch","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":352261,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"30","issue":"18","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":9,"text":"Reston PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2016-04-27","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5afee9ade4b0da30c1bfc57c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Evaristo, Jaivime","contributorId":202933,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Evaristo","given":"Jaivime","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":13248,"text":"University of Saskatchewan","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":730230,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"McDonnell, Jeffrey J.","contributorId":202934,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"McDonnell","given":"Jeffrey","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":36551,"text":"University of Saskatchewan, Canada, and University of Aberdeen, Scotland","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":730231,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Scholl, Martha A. 0000-0001-6994-4614 mascholl@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6994-4614","contributorId":1920,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Scholl","given":"Martha","email":"mascholl@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":37277,"text":"WMA - Earth System Processes Division","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":730229,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Bruijnzeel, L. Although there may be multiple ways to address a problem, perfect solutions rarely exist. Managers are therefore tasked with identifying decisions that will best achieve desired outcomes. Structured decision making (SDM) is a method of decision analysis used to identify the most effective, efficient, and realistic decisions while accounting for values and priorities of the decision maker. The stepwise process includes identifying the management problem, defining objectives for solving the problem, developing alternative approaches to achieve the objectives, and formally evaluating which alternative is most likely to accomplish the objectives. The SDM process can be more effective than informal decision-making because it provides a transparent way to quantitatively evaluate decisions for addressing multiple management objectives while incorporating science, uncertainty, and risk tolerance. To illustrate the application of this process to a management need, we present an SDM-based decision tool developed to identify optimal decisions for proactively managing risk of pneumonia epizootics in bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) in Montana. Pneumonia epizootics are a major challenge for managers due to long-term impacts to herds, epistemic uncertainty in timing and location of future epizootics, and consequent difficulty knowing how or when to manage risk. The decision tool facilitates analysis of alternative decisions for how to manage herds based on predictions from a risk model, herd-specific objectives, and predicted costs and benefits of each alternative. Decision analyses for 2 example herds revealed that meeting management objectives necessitates specific approaches unique to each herd. The analyses showed how and under what circumstances the alternatives are optimal compared to other approaches and current management. Managers can be confident that these decisions are effective, efficient, and realistic because they explicitly account for important considerations managers implicitly weigh when making decisions, including competing management objectives, uncertainty in potential outcomes, and risk tolerance.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1002/jwmg.21088","usgsCitation":"Sells, S.N., Mitchell, M.S., Edwards, V.L., Gude, J., and Anderson, N.J., 2016, Structured decision making for managing pneumonia epizootics in bighorn sheep: Journal of Wildlife Management, v. 80, no. 6, p. 957-969, https://doi.org/10.1002/jwmg.21088.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"957","endPage":"969","ipdsId":"IP-064077","costCenters":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":336971,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"80","issue":"6","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":12,"text":"Tacoma PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2016-05-18","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58bfd4f3e4b014cc3a3ba4af","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sells, Sarah N.","contributorId":171706,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Sells","given":"Sarah","email":"","middleInitial":"N.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":681074,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Mitchell, Michael S. 0000-0002-0773-6905 mmitchel@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0773-6905","contributorId":3716,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mitchell","given":"Michael","email":"mmitchel@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":681010,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Edwards, Victoria L.","contributorId":90149,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Edwards","given":"Victoria","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":681075,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Gude, Justin A.","contributorId":95780,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gude","given":"Justin A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":681076,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Anderson, Neil J.","contributorId":85870,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Anderson","given":"Neil","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":681077,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

To examine this question in absence of relevant strong‐motion records, we use a range of different methods to measure the shear‐wave velocity profiles and the resulting theoretical site amplification factors (AFs) for 30 sites in the Newcastle area, Australia, in a series of blind comparison studies. The multimethod approach used here combines past seismic cone penetrometer and spectral analysis of surface‐wave data, with newly acquired horizontal‐to‐vertical spectral ratio, passive‐source surface‐wave spatial autocorrelation (SPAC), refraction microtremor (ReMi), and multichannel analysis of surface‐wave data. The various measurement techniques predicted a range of different AFs. The SPAC and ReMi techniques have the smallest overall deviation from the median AF for the majority of sites. At 0.2<T<0.4  s, the AFs are largely controlled by the surficial geology of a particular site. Our objectives were to evaluate how spatial resolution of the flow field observation influenced: (1) the velocities considered to be representative of habitat units; (2) patterns of use of the hydraulic environment by fish; and (3) estimates of energy expenditure. We addressed these objectives using observations within a 1:1 scale physical model of a full-channel log jam in an outdoor experimental stream. Velocities were measured with Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry at a 10 cm grid spacing, whereas fish locations and tailbeat frequencies were documented over time using underwater videogrammetry. Results highlighted that resolution of observation did impact perceived habitat use and energy expenditure, as did the location of measurement within habitat units and the use of averaging to summarize velocities within a habitat unit. In this experiment, the range of velocities and energy expenditure estimates increased with coarsening resolution (grid spacing from 10 to 100 cm), reducing the likelihood of measuring the velocities locally experienced by fish. In addition, the coarser resolutions contributed to fish appearing to select velocities that were higher than what was measured at finer resolutions. These findings indicate the need for careful attention to and communication of resolution of observation in investigating the hydraulic environment and in determining the habitat needs and bioenergetics of aquatic biota.
","language":"English","publisher":"AGU Publications","doi":"10.1002/2015WR018501","usgsCitation":"Tullos, D.D., Walter, C., and Dunham, J.B., 2016, Does resolution of flow field observation influence apparent habitat use and energy expenditure in juvenile coho salmon?: Water Resources Research, v. 52, no. 8, p. 5938-5950, https://doi.org/10.1002/2015WR018501.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"5938","endPage":"5950","ipdsId":"IP-075959","costCenters":[{"id":290,"text":"Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":337462,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"52","issue":"8","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":12,"text":"Tacoma PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2016-08-08","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58c7afa1e4b0849ce9795ea4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tullos, Desiree D.","contributorId":176667,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Tullos","given":"Desiree","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":684082,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Walter, Cara","contributorId":189188,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Walter","given":"Cara","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":684083,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Dunham, Jason B. 0000-0002-6268-0633 jdunham@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6268-0633","contributorId":147808,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dunham","given":"Jason","email":"jdunham@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":289,"text":"Forest and Rangeland Ecosys Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":365,"text":"Leetown Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":290,"text":"Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":684081,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

LFE rate is highest during the waxing fortnightly tide, with LFEs most strongly promoted when the daily stress exceeds the previous peak stress by the widest margin. Our goal was to evaluate annual variation in abundance of 14 grassland bird species breeding in the northern mixed-grass prairie in relation to annual variation in precipitation and temperature. We modeled avian abundance during the breeding season using North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) data for the U.S. Badlands and Prairies Bird Conservation Region (BCR 17) from 1980 to 2012. We used hierarchical Bayesian methods to fit models and estimate the candidate weather parameters standardized precipitation index (SPI) and standardized temperature index (STI) for the same year and the previous year. Upland Sandpiper (Bartramia longicauda) responded positively to within-year STI (β = 0.101), and Baird's Sparrow (Ammodramus bairdii) responded negatively to within-year STI (β = −0.161) and positively to within-year SPI (β = 0.195). The parameter estimates were superficially similar (STI β = −0.075, SPI β = 0.11) for Grasshopper Sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum), but the best-selected model included an interaction between SPI and STI. The best model for both Eastern Kingbird (Tyrannus tyrannus) and Vesper Sparrow (Pooecetes gramineus) included the additive effects of within-year SPI (β = −0.032 and β = −0.054, respectively) and the previous-year's SPI (β = −0.057 and −0.02, respectively), although for Vesper Sparrow the lag effect was insignificant. Digital stream networks with associated catchments provide a geospatial framework for linking and integrating water-related data. Advancements in the development of NHDPlus are expected to continue to improve the capabilities of this national geospatial hydrologic framework. NHDPlus is built upon the medium-resolution NHD and, like NHD, was developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Geological Survey to support the estimation of streamflow and stream velocity used in fate-and-transport modeling. Catchments included with NHDPlus were created by integrating vector information from the NHD and from the Watershed Boundary Dataset with the gridded land surface elevation as represented by the National Elevation Dataset. This report provides an assessment of the most recent monitoring information (1991-2015) and its implications for the harvest management strategy. By combining varying hypotheses about survival and reproduction, a suite of nine models have been developed that represent a wide range of possibilities concerning the extent to which demographic rates are density\r\ndependent or independent. These results suggest that the pink‐footed goose\r\npopulation may have recently experienced a release from density‐dependent\r\nmechanisms, corresponding to the period of most rapid growth in population size. Beginning with the 2016 hunting season, harvest quotas will be prescribed on an annual basis rather than every three years because of the potential to better meet population management objectives. Based on updated model weights, the recent observations of population size (74,800), the proportion of the population comprised of one-year-old birds (0.138), and temperature days in Svalbard (20), the optimal harvest quota for the 2016 hunting season is 25,000. The large increase in quota compared to that during first three years of AHM reflects stakeholders’ desire to reduce population size to the goal of 60,000, recognizing that population size remains relatively high and above-average production is expected in 2016 due to a warm spring.","language":"English","publisher":"Danish Centre for Environment and Energy","usgsCitation":"Johnson, F.A., and Madsen, J., 2016, Adaptive harvest management for the Svalbard population of pink‐footed geese: 2016 progress summary: Technical Report from DCE – Danish Centre for Environment and Energy, No. 86, v. 86, 24 p.","productDescription":"24 p.","ipdsId":"IP-076495","costCenters":[{"id":17705,"text":"Wetland and Aquatic Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":328126,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":326644,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://dce2.au.dk/pub/TR86.pdf"}],"volume":"86","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":5,"text":"Lafayette PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"57c7ffade4b0f2f0cebfc216","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Johnson, Fred A. 0000-0002-5854-3695 fjohnson@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5854-3695","contributorId":2773,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Johnson","given":"Fred","email":"fjohnson@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":566,"text":"Southeast Ecological Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":455,"text":"National Wetlands Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":17705,"text":"Wetland and Aquatic Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":645741,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Madsen, Jesper","contributorId":9950,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Madsen","given":"Jesper","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":645742,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The performance of these simulations are often validated against measurements from laboratory studies. Collecting channel change information in natural settings for \r\nmodel validation is difficult because it can be expensive and under most channel forming flows the resulting channel change is generally small. Several channel restoration projects designed in part to armor large \r\nmeanders with several large spurs constructed of wooden piles on the Kootenai River, ID, have resulted in rapid bed elevation change following construction. Monitoring of these restoration projects includes post- restoration (as-built) Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) as well as additional channel surveys following high channel forming flows post-construction. The resulting sequence of measured bathymetry provides excellent validation data for morphodynamic simulations at the reach scale of a real river. In this paper we test the performance a quasi-three-dimensional morphodynamic simulation against the measured elevation change. The resulting simulations predict the pattern of channel change reasonably well but many of the details such as the maximum scour are under predicted.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"RiverFlow 2016","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"language":"English","publisher":"CRC Press","isbn":"9781138029132","usgsCitation":"McDonald, R.R., Nelson, J.M., Fosness, R.L., and Nelson, P.O., 2016, Field scale test of multi-dimensional flow and morphodynamic simulations used for restoration design analysis, in RiverFlow 2016, p. 1390-1398.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"1390","endPage":"1398","ipdsId":"IP-073664","costCenters":[{"id":5044,"text":"National Research Program - Central Branch","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":328124,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":328123,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.crcpress.com/River-Flow-2016-Iowa-City-USA-July-11-14-2016/Constantinescu-Garcia-Hanes/p/book/9781138029132"}],"publishingServiceCenter":{"id":2,"text":"Denver PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"57c7ffb3e4b0f2f0cebfc262","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Constantinescu, George","contributorId":174167,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Constantinescu","given":"George","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":7241,"text":"IIHR-Hydroscience and Engineering, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, The University of Iowa","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":647622,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Garcia, Marcelo H.","contributorId":74236,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Garcia","given":"Marcelo H.","affiliations":[{"id":33106,"text":"University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":647623,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Hanes, Dan","contributorId":174168,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Hanes","given":"Dan","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":12995,"text":"Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Saint Louis University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":647624,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":3}],"authors":[{"text":"McDonald, Richard R. 0000-0002-0703-0638 rmcd@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0703-0638","contributorId":2428,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McDonald","given":"Richard","email":"rmcd@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":37778,"text":"WMA - Integrated Modeling and Prediction Division","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":5044,"text":"National Research Program - Central Branch","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":645853,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Nelson, Jonathan M. 0000-0002-7632-8526 jmn@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7632-8526","contributorId":2812,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nelson","given":"Jonathan","email":"jmn@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":37778,"text":"WMA - Integrated Modeling and Prediction Division","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":5044,"text":"National Research Program - Central Branch","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":645854,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Fosness, Ryan L. 0000-0003-4089-2704 rfosness@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4089-2704","contributorId":2703,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fosness","given":"Ryan","email":"rfosness@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":343,"text":"Idaho Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":645855,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Nelson, Peter O.","contributorId":15981,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nelson","given":"Peter","email":"","middleInitial":"O.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":645856,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}
