Deposited during a regression of the Cretaceous epicontinental sea, this informally named unit is composed primarily of sandstone and shale of deltaic and near shore-marine origin. The J sandstone can be divided into an upper transgressive sand, a middle marginal-marine and deltaic facies, and a lower prodelta sequence (Clark, 1978). The depth from the surface to the top of the J sandstone increases from about 4,000 ft on the gently-dipping eastern flank of the basin to more than 8,000 ft at the basin ax is near the steeply-dipping western flank.</p>\n<p>Porosity data compiled in this study were determined from J sandstone cores from 134 widely spaced boreholes. Porosity in areas of poor core coverage was determined from neutron density logs from an additional 20 boreholes ( corrected to core average grain density). Median, rather than average, porosity was used in order to minimize the statistical effect of anomalously high and low porosity values. Thirty-five oil companies and independent operators supplied core porosity data. As part of this extension, the Highway Division plans construction of a bridge crossing Nancy Creek near Atlanta, Georgia. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Highway Division, determined the flood flow characteristics of Nancy Creek near the bridge crossing. The flood frequency, elevation discharge relation, flood profiles, floodway, and flood flow effects were determined. The maximum backwater effect for the proposed bridge and relocated channel was 0.2 ft for the 100-yr flood. The relocated channel will drastically shorten flow length near the proposed State Highway 400 extension and reduce the 100-yr flood elevation between one and two ft from existing conditions between the proposed site and Windsor Parkway. Rift-related extensional deformation is confined to a zone 150 km wide inland of the present coastline at 17 to 18&deg; N and its intensity increases gradually from east to west. Extension is negligible near the crest of the Arabian escarpment, but it reaches a value of 8 to 10 percent in the western Asir, a highly dissected mountainous region west of the escarpment. There is an abrupt increase in extensional deformation in the foothills and pediment west of the Asir (about 40 km inland of the shoreline) where rocks in the upper plate of a system of low-angle normal faults with west dips are extended by 60 to 110 percent. The faults were active 23 to 29 Ma and the uplift occurred after 25 Ma. Tertiary mafic dike swarms and plutons of gabbro and granophyre 20 to 23 m.y. old are concentrated in the foothills and pediment as well. The chemistry of the dikes suggests 1) fractionation at 10 to 20 kbar, 2) a rapid rise through the upper mantle and lower crust, and 3) differentiation and cooling at 1 Atm to 5 kbar. Structural relations between dikes, faults and dipping beds indicate that the mechanical extension and intrusional expansion were partly coeval, but that most of the extension preceded the expansion.</p>\n<p>A tectonic reconstruction of pre-Red Sea Afro/Arabia suggests that the early rift was narrow with intense extension confined to an axial belt 20 to 40 km wide. S. Geological Survey that show earthquake data of individual states or groups of states at the scale of 1:1,000,000. This map shows only those earthquakes with epicenters located within the boundaries of Indiana, even though earthquakes in nearby states may have been felt or may have caused damage in Indiana.</p>\n<p>The data in table 1 were used to compile the seismicity map; these data are a corrected, expanded, and updated (through 1983) version of the data used by Algermissen (1969) for a study of seismic risk in the United States. The locations and intensities of some earthquakes were revised and intensities were assigned where none had been before. Many earthquakes were added to the original list from new data sources as well as from some old data sources that had not been previously used. The data in table 1 represent best estimates of the location of the epicenter, magnitude, and intensity of each earthquake on the basis of historical and current information. Some of the aftershocks from large earthquakes are listed, but not all, especially for earthquakes that occurred before seismic instruments were universally used.</p>\n<p>The latitude and longitude coordinates of each epicenter were rounded to the nearest tenth of a degree and sorted so that all identical locations were grouped and counted. These locations are represented on the map by a triangle. The number of earthquakes at each location is shown on the map by the arabic number to the right of the triangle. A Roman numeral to the left of a triangle is the maximum Modified Mercalli intensity (Wood and Neumann, 1931) of all earthquakes at that geographic location. The absence of an intensity value indicates that no intensities have been assigned to earthquakes at that location. Much of the work is a cooperative effort in which planning and financial support are shared by state and local governments and other federal agencies. This report contains a brief description of the water-resources investigations in Georgia in which the Geological Survey participates, and a list of selected references. Water-resources data for the 1985 water year for Georgia consists of records of stage, discharge, and water quality of streams; stage and contents of lakes and reservoirs; and groundwater levels. These data include discharge records for 108 gaging stations; water quality for 43 continuous stations, 109 periodic stations, and miscellaneous sites; peak stage and discharge only for 130 crest-stage partial-record stations and 44 miscellaneous sites; and water levels of 27 observation wells. Nineteen Georgia District projects are summarized. This is the primary process by which a stream replenishes the oxygen consumed in the biodegradation of organic wastes.</p><p>Prior to 1965, reaeration rate coefficients could be estimated only by indirect methods. In 1965, a direct method of measuring stream reaeration coefficients was developed in which a radioactive tracer gas was injected into a stream--the tracer gas being <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" data-mce-style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">desorbed</span> from the stream inversely to how oxygen would be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" data-mce-style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">absorbed</span>. The technique has since been modified by substituting hydrocarbon gases for the radioactive tracer gas.</p><p>This manual describes the slug-injection and constant-rate injection methods of performing gas-tracer desorption measurements.
