The geohydrologic data include log, water quality, water level, hydraulics, and water use information. The log data consist of depths to the top of selected geologic formations determined from about 275 sites with geophysical logs and formation lithologies from about 190 sites with lithologic logs. The water quality data consist of about 10,800 analyses, of which about 1 ,200 are proprietary. The water level data consist of about 4 ,480 measured water levels and about 4,175 equivalent freshwater hydraulic heads, of which about 3,745 are proprietary. The hydraulics data consist of results from about 30 specific capacity tests and about 20 aquifer tests, and interpretations of about 285 drill stem tests (of which about 60 are proprietary) and about 75 core-sample analyses. The water use data consist of estimates of freshwater withdrawals from Precambrian through Cretaceous geohydrologic units for each of the 105 counties in Kansas. Average yearly withdrawals were estimated for each decade from 1940 to 1980. All the log and water use data and the nonproprietary parts of the water quality , water level, and hydraulics data are available on magnetic tape from the USGS office in Lawrence, Kansas. A total of about 33 million gal/day (mgd) recharges the upper part of the aquifer system at Haile Sink, Alachua Sink, and drainage wells near Lake Alice. At the Kanapaha Wastewater Treatment Plant, injection wells recharge an average of 6.1 mgd into the lower zone of the system. The samples of water entering the aquifer system collected at the four sites generally conformed to the drinking water standards recommended by the EPA in 1983. Bacteria and nutrient concentrations were more variable in the recharge water than were other constituents. Organic compounds such as diazinon, lindane, and malathion were occasionally detected in all recharge water, but concentrations never exceeded recommended limits. Bacteria were detected in most wells sampled near the Gainesville recharge sites. The highest counts were from wells near Alachua Sink. At only one site was there a significant difference between the quality of the recharge water and water from the wells sampled, although the recharge water tended to be lower in calcium and iron than water from the Floridan aquifer system. A sample from a well about 150 ft down-gradient of a drainage well near Lake Alice consisted of turbid water with a total phosphorus concentration of 75 mg/l and total nitrogen concentration of 57 ml/l. Water flowing into the drainage well from the lake had a total nitrogen concentration of 1.6 mg/l. Apparently, nutrient rich suspended sediment in inflow to the drainage well settles out of the water and accumulates in cavities in the limestone. Estimated loads entering the aquifer include 3,500 kg/d of chloride, &lt; 0.4 kg/day of lead, 310 kg/day of nitrogen, and 150 kg/day of phosphorus. The effects of the loads were not detected in most monitor wells. Apparently, some of the constituents may settle out, some may be adsorbed by aquifer materials, and the remainder diluted and dispersed by the extremely large volume of water in the aquifer. According to flow-duration analyses, daily mean outflow/unit area from the neutral lake (Panther Lake, pH 5-7) was more sustained and contained a higher percentage of groundwater than that of the acidic lake (Woods Lake, pH 4-5). Outflow recession rates and maximum base-flow rates, derived from individual recession curves, were 3.9 times and 1.5 times greater, respectively, in the neutral-lake basin than in the acidic-lake basin. Groundwater contribution to lake outflow was also calculated from a lake-water budget; the groundwater contribution to the neutral lake was about 10 times greater than that to the acidic lake. Thick sandy till forms the groundwater reservoir and the major recharge area in both basins but covers 8.5 times more area in the neutral-lake basin than in the acidic-lake basin. More groundwater storage within the neutral basin provides longer contact time with neutralizing minerals and more groundwater discharge. As a result, the neutral lake has relatively high pH and alkalinity, and more net cation transport. The report summarizes data from a network of observation wells, throughout the State, at which water levels are either recorded continuously or measured intermittently. For wells at which water levels are measured semi-annually, 10-yr summaries are presented. Water levels for 222 observation wells are shown on graphs, and locations for the wells are shown on accompanying maps. The following information is given for each well: location , owner, type of aquifer, depth and casing information, type of measurement, altitude datum, period of record, and extremes for the period of record. The data consist of chemical analyses of water samples collected from wells that are completed in formations of Mesozoic and Paleozoic age. The data base includes data from the National Water Data Storage and Retrieval System, the Petroleum Data System, the National Uranium Resource Evaluation, and selected publications. Chemical analyses were selected for inclusion within the hydrochemical data base if the total concentration of the cations differed from the total 10 percent or less of the total concentration of all ions. Those analyses which lacked the necessary data for an ionic balance were included if the ratios of dissolved-solids concentration to specific conductance were between 0.55 and 0.75. Brillouin's diversity index was calculated and plotted against time for each site. The diversity index at 7 sites had upward trends significant at the 99-percent confidence level, the index at 9 sites had upward trends significant at the 95 to 98 percent confidence level, and the index at 11 sites had upward trends significant at the 90 to 94 percent con- fidence level. Although the trends were not statistically significant, 17 of the remaining sites had upward trends and 2 had downward trends.\r\n\r\n      The seasonal Kendall test was used to test the chemical data for temporal trends at eight sites having stream discharge data. Significant trends were found at one or more sites for flow-adjusted values of specific conductance, pH, total nitrate, total phosphorus, dissolved chloride, and dissolved sulfate. The chemical data for 11 sites, which were not flow adjusted, were tested for trends by plotting against time and determining a correlation coefficient. Significant trends were found at one or more sites in nitrate and chloride. Selected chemical constituents were tested by regression analysis for correlation with the diversity index. Only total dissolved solids correlated significantly with diversity index. Several suggestions are made to improve the monitoring program.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri854177","usgsCitation":"Moore, C., 1987, Determination of benthic-invertebrate indices and water-quality trends of selected streams in Chester County, Pennsylvania, 1969-80: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 85-4177, v, 62 p. :ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri854177.","productDescription":"v, 62 p. :ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":124177,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1985/4177/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":57603,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1985/4177/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa8e4b07f02db66788b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moore, C.R.","contributorId":46962,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moore","given":"C.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":200339,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This map is a revision of an earlier one (Moore and Wolfe, 1976). Detail of pyroclastic and alluvial deposits has been reduced for clarity on this uncolored version, and eolian deposits, represented by numerous active dunes of basaltic ash, have been completely omitted. Small cinder cones developed over rootless vents on the basalt flow (Qbb) of = vent 2019 have also been omitted. In addition, a few changes have been made in correlations of flows and vents. The stratigraphic classification has been modified because magnetic-polarity determinations and new K-Ar ages indicate that the physiographically defined Tappan and Woodhouse age groups (Moore and others, 1976) overlap significantly in age, and the rocks of those age groups are now assigned to the Brunhes or Matuyama Polarity Chronozones (Mankinen and Dalrymple, 1979).</p><p>The San Francisco field, which is largely Pliocene and Pleistocene in age, is in northern Arizona, just north of the broad transition zone between the Colorado Plateau and the Basin and Range province. It is one of several dominantly basaltic volcanic fields of late Cenozoic age situated near the southern margin of the Colorado Plateau. The East map area encompasses approximately 1,220 km<sup>2</sup>.</p><p>The volcanic field contains rocks ranging in composition from basalt to rhyolite--the products of eruption through Precambrian basement rocks and approximately a kilometer of overlying, nearly horizontal, Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks. About 500 km<sup>3</sup> of erupted rocks cover about 5,000 km<sup>2</sup> of predominantly Permian and locally preserved Triassic sedimentary rocks that form the erosionally stripped surface of the Colorado Plateau in northern Arizona.</p><p>In the East map area, basalt, basaltic andesite and locally associated small dacite&nbsp;domes, and, in a few cases, andesite were extruded from numerous individual vents, each of which presumably erupted briefly and then became inactive. Such short-lived vents, represented mainly by cinder cones or tuff rings, are widely distributed over the map area, and their flows cover much of its surface. However, repeated eruption of andesite, dacite, and rhyolite domes and flows formed the O'Leary Peak eruptive center in the northwest part of the map area, and flows of andesite (Qa<sub>1</sub> and Qa<sub>2</sub>) from the San Francisco Mountain stratovolcano entered the East map area from the west.</p><p>A northeastward progression of volcanism during the past 15 m.y., from central Arizona into the San Francisco volcanic field, is shown by the compilation of Luedke and Smith (1978). Although complicated in detail, a general northeastward to eastward progression of volcanic activity is also apparent within the San Francisco volcanic field. Thus, much of the eruptive activity of the East map area occurred late in the development of the San Francisco field, and the East map area includes the youngest volcanic rocks of the field. These youngest rocks were formed during the Sunset Crater eruption, which occurred within the past 1,000 years (Smiley, 1958).</p><p>A northeast-trending, faulted monocline occurs near Doney Mountain in the north-central part of the East map area, and a broad north- to northwest-trending anticline occurs at the east edge of the map area. Nearby volcanic rocks are not folded or faulted by either structure.</p><p>Northwest-trending normal faults of small throw occur in the southern and northwestern parts of the map area. The faults in the northwestern part transect basalt flows of Matuyama and Brunhes ages (Tmb, Qmb, and Qbb). The volcanic rocks are not faulted elsewhere in the East map area. However, local northwestward elongation and alignment of vent deposits, as shown for example by the fissure deposits of the Sunset Crater eruption (Qbsbf), indicate the presence of a northwest-trending fracture system that apparently localized some of the eruptive feeders. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/mf1960","usgsCitation":"Moore, R.B., and Wolfe, E.W., 1987, Geologic map of the east part of the San Francisco Volcanic Field, north-central Arizona: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1960, Report: 46 p.; 2 Plates: 38.07 x 58.09 inches and 38.52 x 50.01 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1960.","productDescription":"Report: 46 p.; 2 Plates: 38.07 x 58.09 inches and 38.52 x 50.01 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":180464,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1960/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":105137,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_5529.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"5529"},{"id":361001,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1960/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":361002,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1960/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":361003,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1960/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"50000","datum":"National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929","country":"United States","state":"Arizona","otherGeospatial":"San Francisco volcanic field","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -111.61749999999999,35.134166666666665 ], [ -111.61749999999999,35.6175 ], [ -111.11749999999999,35.6175 ], [ -111.11749999999999,35.134166666666665 ], [ -111.61749999999999,35.134166666666665 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae3e4b07f02db689190","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moore, Richard B. rmoore@usgs.gov","contributorId":1464,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moore","given":"Richard","email":"rmoore@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":405,"text":"NH/VT office of New England Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":263640,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wolfe, Edward W.","contributorId":79878,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wolfe","given":"Edward","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":263639,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
