In April 1985, sand samples were collected from many of the beaches on Tutuila Island, American Samoa, and in July 1985, three bays were surveyed using side-scan sonar and shallow seismic profiling. During that second trip, scuba divers collected sand samples from the surveyed areas. Dingler and others (1986) describes the study; this report presents the grain-size and composition data for the onshore and offshore sand samples. Locations of the onshore samples are plotted on the map of the island, which is reproduced from Normark and others (1985); locations of most of the offshore samples and side-scan sonar interpretations made during the study are plotted on enlargements (A and B, respectively) of Fagaitua and Nua-seetaga Bays. Lam Yuen (1981), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (1980), and Sea Engineering Services Inc. (1980) provide additional information pertaining to the island's beaches.

The wells were installed to supplement an existing water level network and to provide additional data on the hydraulic characteristics and vertical hydraulic gradients in the alluvial aquifer near Reelfoot Lake. Well yields ranged from less than 20 gallons per minute to about 140 gallons per minute. The specific capacities of the wells ranged from less than 1 to 17.1 gallons per minute per foot of drawdown. Dissolved-solids concentrations ranged from 153 to 475 milligrams per liter at six wells. Three lithological sequences were encountered during drilling. Deep clay and silty clay occurred near the southwest corner of Reelfoot Lake. Predominantly medium- to coarse-grained sand occurred below about 15 feet of silt and clay near the west and northwest sides of the Lake. Along the western limit of the study area, near Lake No. 9 and the Mississippi River, at least about 50 feet of silt and silty sand occurred below land surface. On the basis of their aqueous solubilities, nonionic organic compounds partition themselves between water, dissolved organic matter, particulate organic matter, and the lipid reservoirs of aquatic organisms. Ionized organic compounds can be absorbed to sediments, thereby reducing their aqueous concentrations. Transformation processes of photolysis, hydrolysis, biodegradation, and volatilization can attenuate organic compounds, and attenuation rate commonly follow a first-order kinetic process.
\nEight groups of manmade organic compounds are discussed:
\n1. Polychlorinated biphenyls and organochlorine insecticides,
\n2. Carbamate and organophosphorus insecticides,
\n3. Herbicides,
\n4. Phenols,
\n5. Halogenated aliphatic and monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons,
\n6. Phthalate esters,
\n7. Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, and
\n8. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
\nFor each compound group, data pertaining to use, production, and properties are presented and discussed. Processes that influence that the environmental fate of each group, as determined primarily through laboratory studies, are reviewed, and important fate processes are identified. Environmental concentrations of compounds from each group in water, biota, and sediment are given to demonstrate representative values for comparison to concentrations determined during ongoing research. Finally, where sufficient data exist, regional and temporal contamination trends in the United States are discussed.

The quadrangle encompasses an area of about 19,500 km2 along and to the east of the east flank of the Sierra Nevada (fig. 1).
The Bouguer gravity anomaly map of the Walker Lake quadrangle was prepared by interpolating gravity values among 3,447 gravity stations established in the quadrangle and additional stations from adjacent quadrangles. An isostatic residual gravity map was prepared in order to reduce the effect; of interfering gravity gradients associated with the isostatic root of the Sierra Nevada. Methods of data reduction and factors that limit the accuracy of the gravity values are discussed in the following sections of this report.
The geologic interpretation of the gravity maps is based on previous studies, sample measurements, and correlation with other maps of the folio including a geologic map (Stewart and others, 1982) and a map showing Mesozoic plutonic rocks (John, 1983). The purpose of the interpretative part of this report is to demonstrate the correlation between gravity anomalies and the mapped geology, to assess the continuation of exposed geologic units beneath the surface, and to suggest the location of concealed subsurface bodies with mineral resource potential. A three-dimensional model of the Little Walker caldera (fig. 6) is used to illustrate a possible quantitative interpretation of a gravity anomaly. A concealed 25 by 75-km Cenozoic batholith along the east flank of the Sierra Nevada with possible lateral extensions is suggested in this report. A possible magmatic mechanism is discussed to augment contemporary explanations for the extensional origin of valleys. The possibility of lower gravity anomalies indicating thinner roof rocks in the basement beneath mountain ranges also is discussed. Furthermore, interpretation of gravity anomalies was applied in discussions with W.D. Menzie (oral commun. , 1982) as one of the criteria used to identify and to delineate areas of mineral resource potential.
