This project was a cooperative effort between the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Earth Resources Observation Systems (EROS) Data Center. The objective of the accuracy assessment was to estimate (with a precision of ?10 percent at the 90 percent confidence level) the comission error in each of the eight level II hierarchical vegetation cover types. A stratified two-phase (double) cluster sample was used. Phase I consisted of 160 photointerpreted plots representing clusters of Landsat pixels, and phase II consisted of ground data collection at 80 of the phase I cluster sites. Ground data were used to refine the phase I error estimates by means of a linear regression model. The classified image was stratified by assigning each 15-pixel cluster to the stratum corresponding to the dominant cover type within each cluster. This method is known as stratified plurality sampling. \r\n\r\nOverall error was estimated to be 36 percent with a standard error of 2 percent. Estimated error for individual vegetation classes ranged from a low of 10 percent ?6 percent for evergreen woodland to 81 percent ?7 percent for cropland and pasture. Total cost of the accuracy assessment was $106,950 for the one-million-hectare study area. \r\n\r\nThe combination of the stratified plurality sampling (SPS) method of sample allocation with double sampling provided the desired estimates within the required precision levels. The overall accuracy results confirmed that highly accurate digital classification of vegetation is difficult to perform in semiarid environments, due largely to the sparse vegetation cover. Nevertheless, these techniques show promise for providing more accurate information than is presently available for many BLM-administered lands.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82814","usgsCitation":"Szajgin, J., Pettinger, L.R., Linden, D., and Ohlen, D., 1982, Arizona Vegetation Resource Inventory (AVRI) accuracy assessment: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-814, iii, 40 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82814.","productDescription":"iii, 40 p.","costCenters":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":34304,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0814/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":139506,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0814/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abce4b07f02db672ffa","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Szajgin, John","contributorId":60203,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Szajgin","given":"John","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153903,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Pettinger, L. The specific conductance, 5-day biochemical oxygen demand, nutrient concentrations, and bacteria densities in Bakers Creek decreased downstream through the study reach. The mean specific conductance decreased from 670 micromhos per centimeter to 306 micromhos per centimeter. The 5-day biochemical oxygen demand decreased from 19 milligrams per liter to 2.8 milligrams per liter. The mean total nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations decreased from 10 and 7.1 milligrams per liter to 1.0 and 0.87 milligram per liter, respectively. The maximum fecal bacteria decreased from 7,200 colonies per 100 milliliter to 400 colonies per 100 milliliter.

The concentrations of mercury (0.4 micrograms per liter), iron (3,400 micrograms per liter), and manganese (1,100 micrograms per liter) in a sample collected at the downstream site exceeded recommended limits. Diazinon (0.01 micrograms per liter) and 2,4-D (0.02 micrograms per liter) were also present in the water. A bottom material sample contained DDD (2.5 micrograms per kilogram), DDE (2.7 micrograms per kilogram), and DDT (.3 micrograms per kilogram).

The tributary inflow from Lindsey Creek did not improve the water quality at downstream sites on Bakers Creek. The dissolved oxygen concentrations were generally less than 5.0 milligrams per liter at the sampling site on Lindsey Creek. The 5-day biochemical oxygen demand, the mean specific conductance, and fecal coliform densities were greater in the tributary than at the downstream site on Bakers Creek.

The average rate of travel through a 1.8 -mile reach of Bakers Creek was 0.06 foot per second or 0.04 miles per hour.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82427","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Mississippi Department of Natural Resources Bureau of Pollution Control","usgsCitation":"Kalkhoff, S.J., 1982, Quality of water and time of travel in Bakers Creek near Clinton, Mississippi: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-427, v, 37 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82427.","productDescription":"v, 37 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":405487,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0427/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":141479,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0427/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Mississippi","city":"Clinton","otherGeospatial":"Bakers Creek","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -90.35293579101562,\n              32.32659651806086\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.28839111328125,\n              32.32659651806086\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.28839111328125,\n              32.35212281198644\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.35293579101562,\n              32.35212281198644\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.35293579101562,\n              32.32659651806086\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a8be4b07f02db651737","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kalkhoff, Stephen J. 0000-0003-4110-1716 sjkalkho@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4110-1716","contributorId":1731,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kalkhoff","given":"Stephen","email":"sjkalkho@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":351,"text":"Iowa Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":35680,"text":"Illinois-Iowa-Missouri Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":36532,"text":"Central Midwest Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":155731,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The most widespread and widely used aquifer lies near sea level. Locally, available data also indicate that one or more water-bearing zones lie above the sea-level aquifer. Pumpage in 1979 totaled about 1.67 billion gallons; about 90% was pumped from the sea-level aquifer. Most large producing wells in the county have pumping water levels near or below sea level, so that if pumping continued for a long enough time, seawater intrusion would result. Sampling of chloride concentrations in July 1978, April 1980, and August 1980 indicated problem areas mainly in northeastern and southern Camano Island and in central Whidbey Island. The drilling was undertaken to obtain information on the geotechnical characteristics of a part of the coal-bearing Tyonek Formation and overlying surficial deposits. The preliminary results of a previous drill hole (1C-79), located 1.3 km (0.8 mi) northeast of drill hole 2C-80, were reported by Chleborad and others (1980).

The Tyonek Formation is early Oligocene to middle Miocene in age (Wolfe and Tanai, 1980). At the drill site it is overlain by a thin colluvial deposit of Quaternary age.

The drilling and continuous core sampling penetrated 19.5 m (63.9 ft) of overburden, a major coal bed (Waterfall bed), and approximately 29 m (95.1 ft) of underlying material, to a total depth of 61 m (200 ft). Drill hole 2C-80 stratigraphically overlaps drill hole 1C-79 and continues down section approximately 33 m (108 ft).

A proposed open pit coal-mining plan (Placer Amex, Inc., 1977, status report of December 1977) outlines a sequential mining and reclamation scheme for five areas in the Capps Coal Field. Figure 2 shows the location of drill holes 2C-80 and 1C-79 with respect to the proposed mining areas as well as selected surface features. A general description of the geology and natural hazards of the region are given by Schmoll and others (1981).

The generalized lithology interpreted from core obtained from drilling and supplemented by outcrop mapping accomplished during the 1979 and 1980 field seasons is presented in figure 3. A more detailed lithologic log is presented as part of the geotechnical log.

The geotechnical and geophysical logs presented herein (pls. 1 and 2) provide basic physical-property and engineering data useful in predicting the response of geologic materials to proposed large-scale coal mining and related development, and in identifying and assessing potential geologic hazards.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82884","usgsCitation":"Chleborad, A.F., Yehle, L.A., Schmoll, H.R., Gardner, C.A., and Dearborn, L.L., 1982, Preliminary geotechnical and geophysical logs from drill hole 2C-80 in the Capps coal field, Cook Inlet region, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-884, Report: i, 9 p.; 2 Plates: 24.10 x 39.76  inches and 38.76 x 30.15 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82884.","productDescription":"Report: i, 9 p.; 2 Plates: 24.10 x 39.76  inches and 38.76 x 30.15 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140372,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0884/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":419626,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0884/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":419625,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0884/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":419624,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0884/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Capps coal field, Cook Inlet region","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -152.76239838016622,\n              60.08744633316809\n            ],\n            [\n              -152.76239838016622,\n              59.16858664727599\n            ],\n            [\n              -151.57638556145136,\n              59.16858664727599\n            ],\n            [\n              -151.57638556145136,\n              60.08744633316809\n            ],\n            [\n              -152.76239838016622,\n              60.08744633316809\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abce4b07f02db6734c4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Chleborad, Alan F.","contributorId":87578,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Chleborad","given":"Alan","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":155605,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Yehle, Lynn A. yehle@usgs.gov","contributorId":3794,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Yehle","given":"Lynn","email":"yehle@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":155606,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Schmoll, Henry R. schmoll@usgs.gov","contributorId":3793,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schmoll","given":"Henry","email":"schmoll@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":155608,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Gardner, Cynthia A. 0000-0002-6214-6182 cgardner@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6214-6182","contributorId":1959,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gardner","given":"Cynthia","email":"cgardner@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":155609,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Dearborn, Larry L.","contributorId":66687,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dearborn","given":"Larry","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":155607,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

In the northern and the extreme southern parts of the county, most wells are completed in bedrock at depths less than 100 feet. In the central part, most wells are completed in glacial deposits; some of these wells are as deep as 200 feet. Yields, in some places as high as 300 gallons per minute, are generally greatest from wells completed in glacial deposits. Most well water is hard and has iron concentrations ranging from <0.1 mg/L to about 5.0 mg/L. Chemical fertilizer was applied periodically to the test site and adjacent areas. Periodic mounding of the water table occurred due to effluent irrigation, inducing radial flow from the test site. Physical, geochemical, biochemical processes effectively reduced total nitrogen concentration 90% and total phosphorous concentration more than 95% in the ground water of the surficial aquifer about 300 feet downgradient from the test site from that of the applied effluent. Downgradient, total nitrogen averaged 2.4 milligrams per liter and total phosphorus averaged 0.17 milligrams per liter. Substantial increases in total phosphorus were observed when the pH of the ground water increased. Total coliform bacteria in the ground water of the surficial aquifer were generally less than 100 colonies per 100 milliliters. Fecal coliform bacteria were generally less than 25 colonies per 100 milliliters at the test site and were not detected downgradient or near the test site. Fecal streptococcal bacteria were generally less than 100 colonies per 100 milliliters at the test site, but were detected on three occasions near the test site. The Honeybrook subbasin could not be calibrated because of nonrepresentative rainfall data. The Coatesville subbasin was calibrated, but not verified; the average standard error of estimate is 34 percent for peak discharge. The Modena subbasin was calibrated and verified. Average error for peak discharge is 38 percent for calibration and 24 percent for verification.
\n
Predictive simulations using selected storms were made to determine the effects of projected population and four proposed flood-control structures in the Coatesville and Modena subbasins. Simulation of projected population growth in both subbasins showed that runoff volumes would generally have a greater percentage increase for low-magnitude floods than for high-magnitude floods. Proposed flood-control structure PA-436D had the greatest reduction in peak discharge at West Branch Brandywine Creek at Coatesville when a large quantity of runoff entered the Coatesville subbasin from upstream. WA-2 had the greatest reduction in peak discharge when most of the runoff came from within the Coatesville subbasin. Although WA-2 and PA-430 will control about the same drainage area, WA-2 causes a greater reduction in peak discharge at Coatesville because PA-430 is to be located upstream from Rock Run Reservoir, which provides some flood- water storage. In the Modena subbasin, the simulated effect of proposed flood-control structure PA-428 showed that it would lower the peak discharge of Sucker Run at State Route 82 and either raise or have no effect on peak discharges at West Branch Brandywine Creek at Modena. Most simulations of the effects of proposed flood-control structures in the Coatesville subbasin on peak discharge at Modena showed a reduction in peak discharge.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri8173","usgsCitation":"Sloto, R.A., 1982, A stormwater management model for the West Branch Brandywine Creek, SEISRISK II employs a model that allows earthquakes to occur as points within source zones and as finite-length ruptures along faults. It assumes that earthquake occurrences have a Poisson distribution, that occurrence rates remain constant during the time period considered, that ground motion resulting from an earthquake is a known function of magnitude and distance, that seismically homogeneous source zones are defined, that fault locations are known, that fault rupture lengths depend on magnitude, and that earthquake rates as a function of magnitude are specified for each source. \r\n\r\nSEISRISK II calculates for each site on a grid of sites the level of ground motion that has a specified probability of being exceeded during a given time period. The program was designed to process a large (essentially unlimited) number of sites and sources efficiently and has been used to produce regional and national maps of seismic hazard.}t is a substantial revision of an earlier program SEISRISK I, which has never been documented. SEISRISK II runs considerably [aster and gives more accurate results than the earlier program and in addition includes rupture length and acceleration variability which were not contained in the original version. We describe the model and how it is implemented in the computer program and provide a flowchart and listing of the code.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82293","usgsCitation":"Bender, B., and Perkins, D.M., 1982, SEISRISK II; a computer program for seismic hazard estimation: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-293, 104 p., ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82293.","productDescription":"104 p., ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140456,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0293/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35377,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0293/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49d5e4b07f02db5ddabd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bender, Bernice","contributorId":38986,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bender","given":"Bernice","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156747,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Perkins, D. In 1977 and 1978, the highest TCE concentration was found surrounding the most productive well, Haven well. Large quantities of TCE were used for degreasing between 1955 and 1965 and, so far as is known, TCE was used extensively up until 1973. Data on how, where, and when TCE got into the aquifer are lacking, but geochemical evidence and TCE analyses show a strong relation between the high TCE concentrations near Haven well and the extensive storm-drain system that underlies the parking apron and runway. The drains help recycle some of the TCE-contaminated ground water from the Haven well area.

Sources of TCE-free ground water on PAFB may exist in the northern parts and do exist in the southern parts of the main aquifer; however, in the southern part, either the ground water is probably already being used nearly to capacity (Smith and Harrison production wells) or further development might adversely affect off-base ground-water use. In the northern part, available subsurface data indicate that only relatively small yields are likely at any one site; thus, to get sustained yields comparable to that of the Haven well would probably require an unreasonable number of wells.

This study locates TCE contamination in the main PAFB aquifer and discusses three possible water-use alternatives: (I) Abandonment of Haven well, (2) treatment of Haven well water to remove TCE, and (3) treatment of a portion of Haven well water for domestic consumption and use of the remainder for nondomestic uses. Continued use of the Haven well, with treatment of all or part of its yield for TCE removal, is advantageous, both because the Haven well is a high-yield source of water and because cessation of pumping from it might allow TCE-contaminated ground water to move downgradient (southward), endangering the Smith and Harrison production wells. Continued study and monitoring of the TCE contamination would help in predicting when the contamination problem will no longer be threatening.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr80557","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Air Force","usgsCitation":"Bradley, E., 1982, Trichloroethylene in the ground-water supply of Pease Air Force Base, Portsmouth, New Hampshire: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-557, Report: iv, 22 p.; 8 Plates: 12.40 x 10.18 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr80557.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 22 p.; 8 Plates: 12.40 x 10.18 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":427001,"rank":10,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0557/figure-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":427000,"rank":9,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0557/figure-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":426999,"rank":8,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0557/figure-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":426998,"rank":7,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0557/figure-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":426997,"rank":6,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0557/figure-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":426996,"rank":5,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0557/figure-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":426995,"rank":4,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0557/figure-7.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":426994,"rank":3,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0557/figure-8.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":426993,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0557/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":141499,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0557/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Hampshire","city":"Portsmouth","otherGeospatial":"Pease Air Force Base","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -70.82239490389902,\n              43.10272920652986\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.82239490389902,\n              43.015435633341184\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.69191552120652,\n              43.015435633341184\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.69191552120652,\n              43.10272920652986\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.82239490389902,\n              43.10272920652986\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a49e4b07f02db6247d5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bradley, Edward","contributorId":67071,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bradley","given":"Edward","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157011,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
