Major ions, macronutrients, trace elements, and pesticides are the primary chemical groups analyzed. The period of record and frequency of sampling vary for each chemical group, with the longest record for the major ions and the shortest for the macronutrients. Within the park there are three major drainageways: Big Cypress Swamp, Shark River Slough, and Taylor Slough. Each drainageway exhibits unique hydrologic conditions, yet there is a high degree of homogeneity in water-quality characteristics among these areas. Seasonal changes in major-ion, trace-element, and macronutrient concentrations are marked in the shallow marsh. Concentrations generally increase in the dry season due to evapotranspiration, changes in chemical equilibria, and precipitation. Water-management practices in south Florida have changed the water quality in the Shark River Slough. Most major-ion, dissolved-solid, and iron concentrations and color levels have steadily increased since 1963. The water quality in the other two drainageways has not changed since sampling began. Chlorinated-hydrocarbon insecticide residues in bottom material were found in low concentration at every sampling station in the park. Concentrations exceeding 10 milligrams per liter occurred generally in wells less than 100 feet in depth, indicating that nitrate-nitrogen concentrations in ground water greater than 10 milligrams per liter commonly are derived from nitrogen sources at or near the land surface, although soluble nitrogen may be derived from fine-grained sediments in some aquifers.</p><p>Water from shales in central and eastern Kansas and from limestone in eastern Kansas exhibited the highest median concentrations and highest incidence of concentrations above 10 milligrams per liter. Water from 10 percent of the wells in unconsolidated Quaternary deposits in western Kansas and almost 30 percent of the wells in eastern Kansas had nitrate-nitrogen concentrations that exceeded 10 milligrams per liter. Shallow wells in shales, limestones, and unconsolidated Quaternary deposits are highly susceptible to nitrate contamination. Water from unconsolidated Tertiary deposits produced a low incidence of nitrate-nitrogen concentrations greater than 10 milligrams per liter, indicating minimal nitrate contamination from sources at or near the land surface. Sandstones in all areas exhibited the lowest median and lowest incidence of nitratenitrogen concentrations above 10 milligrams per liter.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Geologic hazards identified in the study area for which stipulations are recommended are active faults, mass transport, steep slopes (>10?), and steep-walled submarine canyons. Geologic hazards whose effects can be mitigated through existing technology and design and are not considered cause for stipulation are shallow faults, buried and filled channels, shallow gas, gas-charged sediments, hydrocarbon seeps, and unstable fan deposits. The Minerals Management Service has recommended that a stipulation be applied to 83 tracts where there is evidence of existing or potential sea-floor instability over a significant portion of the tract. One of the hotel 's supply wells delivers water to a reverse-osmosis treatment plant that produces the area 's potable water supply. Should water with increased dissolved solids reach the supply well, the costs of production of potable water will increase. The reverse-osmosis plant supply well is located about 0.4 mile south of one of the wells where increases have been monitored, and 0.8 mile southwest of the well where the most significant increases have been monitored. The direction of local ground-water movement is eastward, which reduces the probability of the supply well being affected. Honey mesquite, a phreatophyte located about 1.5 miles downgradient from the well where the most significant increases have been monitored, might be adversely affected should water with increased dissolved solids extend that far. Available data and data collected during this investigation do not indicate the source of the dissolved-solids increases. Continued ground-water-quality monitoring of existing wells and the installation of additional wells for water-quality monitoring would be necessary before the area affected by the increases, and the source and direction of movement of the water with increased dissolved solids, can be determined. A hydrologic study has been conducted in the potential lease area to describe existing hydrologic systems and to assess potential impacts of surface coal mining on local water resources. Hydrogeologic data collected from wells, springs, and drill holes indicate that shallow aquifers exist within the Tongue River Member of the Fort Union Formation (Paleocene age) and within valley alluvium (Pleistocene and Holocene age). Shallow aquifers within the Tonge River Member include coal beds, clinker, and lenses of sandstone and siltstone. The Knobloch coal bed, a principal shallow aquifer used for livestock watering in the area, averages about 55 feet in thickness and is completely saturated throughout most of its extent. Coarse alluvial deposits are the most productive aquifers and are a major source of stock water in the Cook Creek basin. Surface-water resources are limited to the upstream reach part of Cook Creek, which flows intermittently. The downstream reach part of Cook Creek, plus all other small drainages that originate in the study area, are ephemeral. Mining of the Knoblock and Sawyer coal beds would remove two alluvial springs, one bedrock spring, and two wells, which are all used for watering of livestock. The potentiometric surface within the Knobloch coal aquifer and the alluvial aquifer in the downstream part of the Cook Creek basin would be lowered during mining. Lowered water levels in these aquifers might substantially affect water levels in five wells outside the mine boundary. After mining, the alluvial aquifer downgradient from the mine area might show a long-term degradation in water quality as a result of leaching of soluble salts from overburden materials used to backfill mine pits. Although mining would alter the existing hydrologic systems and remove several springs and shallow wells, alternative ground-water supplies are available that could be developed to replace those lost by mining. Geological Survey","docAbstract":"<p>The U.S. Geological Survey has developed an oilspill risk analysis model to aid in estimating the environmental hazards of developing oil resources in Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) lease areas. The large, computerized model analyzes the probability of spill occurrence, as well as the likely paths or trajectories of spills in relation to the locations of recreational and biological resources which may be vulnerable. The analytical methodology can easily incorporate estimates of weathering rates , slick dispersion, and possible mitigating effects of cleanup. The probability of spill occurrence is estimated from information on the anticipated level of oil production and method of route of transport. Spill movement is modeled in Monte Carlo fashion with a sample of 500 spills per season, each transported by monthly surface current vectors and wind velocities sampled from 3-hour wind transition matrices. Transition matrices are based on historic wind records grouped in 41 wind velocity classes, and are constructed seasonally for up to six wind stations. Locations and monthly vulnerabilities of up to 31 categories of environmental resources are digitized within an 800,000 square kilometer study area. Model output includes tables of conditional impact probabilities (that is, the probability of hitting a target, given that a spill has occurred), as well as probability distributions for oilspills occurring and contacting environmental resources within preselected vulnerability time horizons.
